"I'm Talkin' To You, Furhead!"

An American Tail: Fievel Goes West is truly one of the greatest non-Disney animated films I've ever seen! Directed by Steven Spielberg, the story is simple: Fievel, the curious, adorable little mouse from An American Tail, now heads out west with his family to escape the constant violence of New York City. Everything about this film shines from start to finish, including James Horner's soundtrack, which is every bit as good as in the original film. The songs are nothing less than outstanding, especially Dreams to Dream, sung by Fievel's golden-voiced sister, Tanya, who is voiced by Cathy Cavadini.Fans of the original An American Tail are bound to enjoy Fievel Goes West as well. It's a great movie for kids, or for anyone who enjoys a great animated flick! Highly recommended! (Oh, and be sure to check out the original An American Tail movie as well, if you haven't already. It's just as good!)

As good as the first

The people are merely feet ignoring fully-clothed mice making the same journey across a much, much larger country. I love the voices and the music is terrific. A kid's film I still enjoy.

Dancing Buffalo Bones???

It's not as sentimental as the first, nor is the music as good (on mypersonal scale, it's a 3/10), but the fact that there are morecharacters that are present for the whole movie, I feel that it is farmore engaging for an audience of all ages. Even the villain is alovable character. PUSSY-POOOOOO!!!The animation is also much more unique in this movie. It does its jobengaging the viewer to not only pay attention to the characters, but tothe scenery as well. Something I felt was lacking in the first. The character animation and voice syncing is far better in the firstand the lack of painted background in this one just make it feel on thelow quality side, but the presence of shadow and malleability ofcharacters in this one make it a completely different movie. The story is fast-paced and the humor is timed very well. StevenSpielberg brought us a story not like the original... So... you can'treally say which is better. ^__^;;And since when did Tanya grow hair?Ms. Kitty =

A top movie of all time

Defiantly one of my favorite 10 animated movies, probably in my top 10movies period. I've loved it since I first saw it when it was a newreleaseon video. It gives me a a great feeling to watch it, maybe it's nostalgiabut it's a great movies even apart from that.

A good sequel

I absolutely loved the original film, and I was glad when this movie cameout. It's got a lot of heart like the original does, yet it's a slightstepbelow it. One of the problems with this film is Fievel's voice. His voiceinthe original was like a cute innocent little kid. In this one, it'sdramatically different. And that sorta ruined it. Despite that flaw, thisfilm is fun. Though it isn't nearly as kind and good hearted as theoriginal, it's still got heart. And some nice humor by Dom Deluise aswell. All in all, a great sequel that's worth watching again and again like theoriginal

had to comment on the (tail)? thingy

what?. . . isn't it obvious?sure its a mouse sure it got a tail but from Russia? or lets say at itstime both 1st and 2nd part Russia(USSR)for me its pure subliminal propaganda not even subliminal as its themain title but that area the USA did a lot to put the soviets(Russia)in a dark corner and plant them selfs as the almighty freedom loverwhen most people don't even know what freedom means i find itdisturbing to see the title saying "an American Tail" as if Russia isthe tail of America (main char of this film is a USSR(Russian)citizenin a mouse suit) historically USA don't even reach the toes of Russiavery insulting title and so obvious (an American TAIL)

Better than the original

This movie used to make me laugh myself into a frenzy. Good story, good animation, great comedy. It's intended for kids, of course, but this movie had me cracking up when I was a teenager.

Uh, Fievel...come back east.

For those of you who loved the original, skip this one and move to the third one. Why? To avoid the dissapointment and the fact that this sequel doesn't live up to the original. Don Bluth should've watched who he gave the American Tail rights to.To get away from the violence of New York, the Mousekewitzes take a train out west to a town called Green River. Fievel falls off the train and - look,I'm not going to go on and on, this is exactly what it appears to be - a bad western movie.I just don't see what everyone sees in this. The story never really gets off the ground, the animation is decent, but nothing outstanding compared to other films of the early 90s. The music isn't bad, but it isn't good either. There arevery few songs and while 'Dreams to Dream' is nice, it doesn't compare to 'Somewhere Out There'. By the way, nothing in this film happened. This is all Fievel's dream, as revealed in the third film. Don't get me wrong, its a good movie, it just doesn't live up to the original, and it should.

Fun, But Not Up to the Standard of the Original Story

This is not as good as the original American Tail, but it is fun. Two or three elements make the whole thing fun, but there are some parts that drag a bit. An important element is that the characters are cute: they are cleverly drawn, especially the mice, and most especially Fievel and his stage-struck sister. Another element that gets me is the voices. Dom DeLuise is back as the vegetarian cat Tiger, only this time there's no mistaking him for being gay: he's in love with an extremely female female. In fact, she is so seductive she goes west and becomes a dance hall girl. With a heart of gold, of course. The other voice that really got to me was Sheriff Wylie Burp, an old bloodhound. The voice is James Stewart, one of my all-time favorites. He does the washed up old sheriff to perfection, and it's hilarious to watch him make a dog out of Tiger.OK, it's funny, it really is. It does not have the class of the original, but I liked it. So I guess what I have to do is go back and see how many stars I gave "An American Tail," and give this one less. *Checks back.* No, I can't do that. If I knew how to give half stars, I'd give the original 3 1/2, and this one three. So what the heck, I'll give this one three.

An American Tail: Fievel Goes West

When I was a kid I used to like the original first American Tail film, but then they started making straight-to-video sequels. This sequel isthe only one I have seen, why did they have to make s sequel, at leastas rubbish as this. Young Fievel Mousekevitz the mouse gets lost again(for a little while) and then decides to try and get rid of all thecats from the West part of America, where the story left off. The onlyparts I can remember of this film were the parts with Tiger the cat andJohn Cleese as the voice of the villain. Apparently there was also thevoices of Jon Lovitz, and, in his last film before his death, RearWindow and It's a Wonderful star James Stewart. They are meant to bethe reason for the film earning a second star. Pretty poor!

A worthy sequel to a great classic

Fievel, the cute little mouse from An American Tail, is going west forFievel Goes West. This is one of very few sequels that really deserve thetitle of the original classics. Fievel Goes West may not have as manytouching moments as the original, but that's because it's more of afast-paced western comedy rather than a heartwarming, sometimes tragic tale(tail?) as An American Tail was. A by-product of the comedic approach is the look of the movie. Instead ofthe dark, dull, forbidding color scheme of the first movie, the sequel issupposed to be bright, funny, and altogether welcoming. Thus, you get brightsunshine (sometimes a bit too bright from the characters' point of view) andvaried color. The animation hasn't changed all too much, unlike The LandBefore Time's sequels for video. The animation retains a bit of Don Bluth'stouch, though still a bit different. Altogether, the animation is just aboutas good as it could be in 1991. The film as a whole is a gem, but the one thing truly, wonderfully beautifulthing about Fievel Goes West is James Horner's immortal soundtrack. Thesongs are just as good as An American Tail, which is saying a lot; besides, you have a brutally edited reprise of "Somewhere Out There" from the firstfilm, sung by Tanya. Speaking of Tanya, she's voiced by someone different, presumably to allow for her great singing. For proof, all you need to do islisten to "Dreams To Dream". Great though the aspiring singer is, the endcredits rendition of the song by the crazy Lindstradt lady is beautiful. In Fievel Goes West, our title protagonist is lost on the way to GreenRiver, where he will supposedly find a new lease on life with his family andlots of other hopeful mice. But the dream is shattered when Fievel exploresthe train, and finds a bunch of cats and a huge spider, led by the smoothtalking Cat R. Waul, plotting to befriend the mice before turning them intomouse-burgers by means of a mysterious "better mousetrap"! But Fievel isfound out, and the spider knocks him off the train, leaving him hopelesslylost in the desert. I thought they might have made up something different, not the whole mouse-gets-lost-must-return-to-family routine. I couldn't helpfeeling they'd done that before. However, Dom DeLuise returns for a biggerpart alongside the legendary canine sheriff Wylie Burp. So, overall, what of this sequel? Well, it certainly does the originaljustice. Yes, it does lack the heart of the original, but having less heartthan An American Tail does in no way mean being heartless. Don Bluth mightnot have had a hand in this, but Fievel Goes West lives up to Bluth'sclassic story of a little mouse called Fievel.Animation-9/10; Story-7/10; Plot-7/10; Comedy-8.5/10 = Overall-8/10

Way Out West

This used to be one of my favorite movies as a kid. I used to love the song"Way Out West," which was sung when the mice were traveling on the train. We have the same Mouskewitz family as in the first film, except that theirbaby is now a toddler. Children will love this film, but adults may not betoo interested in it, although there are many things that adults willunderstand like the westward expansion and the closing of the Frontier. Also, they may recognize a familiar voice. The elderly canine sheriff,Whylie Burp (obviously a parody of Wyatt Earp), is voiced by James Stewart. I don't really care for this film or the first one anymore, but I dorecommend it to kids of all ages.

Fie upon thee, Fievel

I cannot see anything depicting Jews as mice, and their antagonists as cats, especially in a cartoon, without thinking of Art Spiegelman's incomparable "Maus." Other than that, the two have nothing in common.First of all, by the time most Ashkenazi Jews started migrating from Eastern Europe to the U.S., the Old West of lore and legend was finished. Once you've accepted that, however, it's only a small stretch to imagine them relocating from the Bronx to Wyoming. As far as Hollywood is concerned, the "Old West" could have been any time from "Tippecanoe and Tyler, Too" until "A River Runs Through It."Secondly, it's "Feivel," not "Fievel." It can even be spelled "Feivl." It's a Yiddish name, and the Mousekewitz family would have written it using Hebrew letters, but there's a standard transliteration. In "The Joys of Yiddish," Leo Rosten recommended dropping the letter "c" whenever possible; thus, we write "shlep," not "schlep," and "shlemiel," not "schlemiel" or "schlemiehl." See how it works? It's pronounced "shle-MEE-ull," not "shle-MY-ull," so if you spell it "Fievel," it would be pronounced "FEE-vul," not "FYE-vul," which is the correct way. With a name like "Phil Nibbelink," the director should have been more sensitive to the correct spelling of unusual names. Don Bluth, of course, was not involved in this one.Reportedly, the sequel where they make a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, "A Mouse of Emmaus," died in development hell.

Perfect for the kids...

When I look back on my childhood, I think of fond, fuzzy memories, often linked with good movies. The Jungle Book, Peter Pan, really anyanimated movie will do, especially Disney. For some reason, thesemovies capture what it means to be a kid, to have fun. What we havehear is one of those funny, heartwarming treasures that will light up achild's face when he or she sees it.In An American Tail: Fievel Goes West, Fievel Mousekewitz and hisfamily are tricked into leaving the big city in the hopes of findingfreedom "way out west". Little do they know that the evil feline Cat R.Waul (John Cleese) is behind this. With the help of his friend Tiger(Dom DeLuise) and sheriff Wiley Burp (Jimmy Stewart), this trio willtry and take down Cat R. Waul and his gang of villainous cats. This well animated sequel to An American Tail is one that will bring asmile to anyones face. Clever humor that appeals to little kids isfound throughout. This movie is one that will become an instant classicin your collection. It can be passed down from generation togeneration. Granted, this isn't a movie that will be watched late atnight by you and your buddies. This movie does what it's supposed todo, entertain the little ones. Your children will have you rewindingover and over again (thank God for DVD's!).
