A Magic Paintbrush That Can Defeat a WitchThis film, as advertised, had excellent visual scenes. The forest moves in a rapid blur. Purple-colored dragons fly naturally through the air. When Rapunzel touches her magic paintbrush to a canvas, live scenes appear magically and vividly. When Gothel the witch uses her evil powers, a tornado of destructive activity makes this obvious. Rapunzel had been kidnapped, and her father, a king, mistakenly blamed another king for it. This led to a long spell of enmity between the two kings, one of whom was named King Wilhelm. No one suspected that it was the witch Gothel who had kidnapped Rapunzel long ago. Gothel treats Rapunzel like a slave, making her do one chore after another. Gothel makes Rapunzel feel that the witch has done her a big favor by raising her. Rapunzel loves to paint, but Gothel disparages her for this, accusing her of wasting her time. At one point, Gothel uses her magic powers to rip Rapunzel's paintings to shreds. Rapunzel discovers a magic paintbrush. It makes scenes happen the moment that she thinks of them and touches the canvas. She uses her magic paintbrush to leave the castle, and she meets Prince Stefan. He develops an immediate liking for her. At one point, when wanting a beautiful dress to wear to the ball, she imagines the dress, touches the magic paintbrush to the canvas, and not only sees the dress but also can wear it.In time, Gothel learns that Rapunzel has a suitor, and is furious about it. As in other fairy tales, the protagonist wants to go to a ball. Prince Stefan, the son of the king falsely accused of having kidnapped Rapunzel, goes there to meet Rapunzel. He encounters Gothel instead. She uses her powers to sting him. Meanwhile, Rapunzel is trapped in a castle tower, forever held in bondage by Gothel's spell. However, there is a way to break the spell, as it does not work on those who are free from dishonesty. Will Rapunzel be able to break the spell and to meet Prince Stefan at the ball? Will the kings learn who actually had kidnapped Rapunzel long ago? Will wicked witch Gothel become trapped as a result of her own dishonesty? I will not spoil the ending by revealing it. |

Another Beautiful Barbie TaleThis review is from: Barbie as Rapunzel (DVD) The animation is beautiful, the music pretty. My girls, ages 6 and 4, adore this movie - they especially like the 'dressup Rapunzel' game on the DVD. The extra's are interesting, too and worth watching. This is one movie that any young (or old)barbie fan will enjoy many times over. |

Barbie as Rapunzel DVDThis review is from: Barbie as Rapunzel (DVD) So far all the Barbie DVD's we have gotten have been wonderful. My daughter enjoys them, but surprisingly the entire family does too. The best thing is that you NEVER have to worry about inappropriate language with these movies. |

Beautiful animation of a classic fairy tale. They've done it again! Now along with the enchanting Barbie Nutcracker, we have Barbie as Rapunzel. As with the former, this movie is a computer animated glory of a movie. Rapunzel is kept captive in the witch Gothel's castle which is beyond a magical wall that no one can see past. With the help of her friends, Hobie the rabbit, and Penelope the dragon (whose father is Hugo, guardian of the castle), she finds her way to the outside world and meets Prince Stefan in a palace garden. When Gothel learns of her misdeed, Rapunzel is trapped in a tower with no hope of escape. Her silver hairbrush is touched by magic and becomes a paintbrush that forms paintings that can take one anywhere so of course, Rapuzel goes back to the garden in the hopes of finding Prince Stefan. He invites her to a masked ball and while dressing in the tower, she is found out by Gothel. What happens from there is, believe it or not, a story of love, betrayal, and redemption. I enjoyed it just as much as my 3-year old! There were just a couple of scenes where she was frightened by Gothel (one in particular during the dream sequence where the Prince asks Rapunzel to let down her hair and a giant Gothel captures her in her hand). All in all, this is another awesome Barbie DVD and like I said in my Barbie Nutcracker (also very worth watching)review, I hope there are many more Barbie movies to come! |

Rapunzel Lets Down Her Audience After Sparkling NutcrackerBarbie in The Nutcracker quickly became a favorite with our family when it was released last year. So we were psyched to see the new video featuring the animated doll as Rapunzel. Alas, like the princess's glorious golden hair, we were let down. As in The Nutcraker, Rapunzel features wonderful classical music (Dvorak's New World Symphony), dazzling animation, and a touching story. But the layers of meaning, adult-level jokes, and high diction of Nutcracker were missing here. Barbie was dumbed down. Remember the "insolent mice" and "cheeky blighter" of The Nutcracker? Those challenging and delightful phrases have been replaced by lame, contemporary dialogue such as, "I call 'em like I see 'em" in what may be an attempt to make the old fairy tale new, fresh, and relevent. Alas, poor Barbie, we liked you better when you used bigger words. Our children - ages six, four, and two - liked it well enough. But we adults hope the Barbie writers pick up Rapunzel's magic paintbrush and use it to paint the next script with the sparkling and intelligent colors we loved in Barbie's debut. |

SerendipityWhen you hear, "Barbie as Rapunzel", I know what you're thinking: "It's a Barbie movie! It CAN'T be good! It just going to be some big marketing scam!" Yes, this truly has all the earmarks of an hour-long advertisement. But guess what? It's not only a coherent, functioning movie--it's actually VERY entertaining. I am not a big Barbie fan, but my family rented this movie at my little sister's behest. I'm interested in animation, so I decided to at least see what the first five minutes were like, planning to leave as soon as the opening credits were through rolling. But do you know what? Something strange happened to me. I suddenly started to sit forward in my seat. I was drawn into the story, forgetting the fact that it was Barbie, forgetting everything except the story unfolding before me. As unlikely as it may seem, this movie actually excels in music, script, characters, and even acting! Considering the budget that this movie must have had, it's a truly great piece of craftsmanship. Everything has a class to it and a finesse that is rarely seen even in the big studio features nowadays. If you have a little girl, I highly recommend this movie. The way the characters interact--especially Rapunzel and Gothel & Rapunzel and the Prince--is a really great role model. This is a story about truth and love. Rent it! Buy it! Wear it out! You won't be sorry! |

a disgrace to the original fairy taleThis movie has nothing to do with the original brothers grimm fairy tale. Although the animation is all pretty and pink, the movie doesn't even come close to the rapunzel story. It was slamming the tale so much, I'm sure the brothers grimm would be turning in their graves by now. If your looking for the real fairy tale try the shelley duvall fairy tale theatres they at least stay true to the original. |

Great Learning- Imagination movieThis review is from: Barbie as Rapunzel (DVD) I originally rented this movie for my 3.5 yr old. We watched the special features too & she loved it so much that she told me she wants to grow up to be an artist & go to art school like in the move/special feature! SOO I bought the movie. The movie shows you that you can do anything you want /imagine anything w/a paintbrush. My daughter actually started running around with a dry paintbrush pretending to "go somewhere"....she does a lot of water color pictures now too. The special features are great too- it follows a young artist to art school & then another feature my daughter loves is you get to "dress" Rapunzel in different hair/crowns/gowns! Great imagination, friendship kind of movie. Highly recommend it. |

Best Barbie Movie yetThis review is from: Barbie as Rapunzel (DVD) Both my kids love these Barbie movies! So far we have The Princess and the Pauper, the Magic of Pegasus, and Barbie as Rapunzel. Now they are all highly cheesy animation and slightly cheesy however very good morals and stories. I will say so far the Rapunzel movie is my favorite as well as my kids. There's creativity, courage, and best of all not as cheesy as the others I've seen! My son loves the movie for the dragons. It's also very interesting. I'd definitely recommend this for anyone with kids who love the Barbie movies! |
