Columbiana Will Be Legendary.

Seriously. Kicks. A$$. Really. I don't understand what all the fuss isabout - I walked into the theater expecting to see a poorly made, crappy movie where all the actors are uttering cheesy one-liners anddoing unbelievably stupid stunts that did not add to the plot of themovie - this is what I was led to believe by all of the negativereviews. In fact, I almost did NOT see this movie in the theater atall. Boy, are all of the critics who posted horrible reviews of thismovie WRONG, WRONG, WRONG.Columbiana, starring Zoe Saldana as the titular character, is a hotbedof action which steam-rolls through from beginning to end. Incredibly, the killing and other violent activities which form the basis of themovie do not bump the flick up from a PG-13 rating - how they did this,I will never know, because the movie is very, very violent. People talkabout the lack of character development in this movie - that is just abig, steaming pile of horse manure. Here's why: As most of you must know by now, the main character andprotagonist, Cataleya Restrepo (Amandla Stenberg & Zoe Saldana), is thedaughter of a kingpin in the drug trade. When Fabio (Jesse Borrego),Cataleya's father, decides to leave the particular drug cartel he isassociated with, the cartel's Don or father, named Don Luis (BetoBenites) orders Fabio and his entire family killed. Fabio discovers thekill-order, and attempts to flee with his wife Alicia (CynthiaAddai-Robinson) and daughter, 10 year old Cataleya - but they are toolate. Unfortunately, the parents are killed in an off-screenstandoff-cum gun-battle inside their home while Cataleya sits terrifiedat the kitchen table. She does not see her parents killed, but sheknows what has happened. THIS IS ALL THE CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT THISTYPE OF MOVIE NEEDS. The violent murders of Cataleya's parents createsa thirst for vengeance which will not be sated until all partiesinvolved suffer a similar fate. This is the movie's moment of truth: Itdefines the way the story is treated from that moment forward.Critics have complained that the audience was not shown HOW Cataleyadeveloped her childhood "parkour" or speedy obstacle navigation escapeskills. That's just silly - first, the child of a drug kingpin inBogota, Columbia would most likely be taught by her gun-wieldingparents SOME type of self defense - which NEED NOT be part of thefilm's scope - second, any child who plays with other children knowshow to run, jump and hide - and third, a terrified child is usuallyuniquely capable of eluding pursuers for a short period of time ifgiven enough of a head-start.I have also read complaints regarding Cataleya's lack of a personality- that's ridiculous. She is simply a vengeful bitch who does not losefocus - ever since escaping, her ultimate goal has been killing thoseresponsible for murdering her family. We even get to see her interactlovingly with her uncle, Emilio Restrepo (Cliff Curtis), hergrandmother, Mama (Ofelia Medina), her boyfriend, Danny Delanay(Michael Vartan), her adopted family, and her dogs. The movie iscareful to show that while these parts of her personality are importantto her, Cataleya cannot truly move forward with her emotionaldevelopment until she has exacted her revenge.Critics of the movie have complained about silly little cosmetictouches like Zoe wearing a black leotard, Zoe dancing in front of thecamera, and Zoe sucking a lollipop. REALLY? Are these the things thatmake a movie BAD? Get real. The most important aspect of the movie forme is that Cataleya is forced to see that her single-minded focus onvengeance directly causes the remaining members of her family to bemurdered. She is also forced to see what she has become when she facesFBI agent Ross (Lennie James) and threatens the lives of his family inorder to assure his cooperation. Once this happens, and once Cataleyafinally kills the man who ordered her family murdered, she is able tomove forward with her development - and her life. The story has a neat, tidy ending, perhaps leaving the audience with a feeling asanticlimactic as Columbiana herself must have felt. Do yourself a favor- do not listen to the critics - see this movie and judge for yourself.Columbiana is a legendary piece of action filmmaking.- Chipper F. It's a hit with me!

COLUMBIANA by Director Oliver Megaton (Transporter 3) tells the storyof a young girl, who after witnessing the cold-blooded murder of herparents by a rival drug cartel boss vows to reap revenge on theirkillers. In a brisk, but action-packed opening to the film, 9 year old Cataleyaescapes the fatal mob hit on her family – and takes refuge with heruncle in California. Here she makes plain her desire for revenge andasks her Uncle (also a mob boss) to "educate" her in the ways of themob. As Cataleya gets more adept, and skillful in her trade, she (inaddition to working for her uncle as a hit-woman by day), then alsostarts to take out members of the mob that murdered her parents in herpart time.Cataleya soon becomes so successful at her "trade" that she has takenout 22 gang members in 4 years – which raises alarm bells – and soonshe is on the radar of the police, the FBI, SWAT, and the various mobs.Zoe Saldana (Avatar, Star Trek XI, Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse ofthe Black Pearl) excels in the lead role, she is very sexy, is a veryable actress, and plays Cataleya so adeptly, that you would havethought that this was a role specifically written for her. She commandsevery scene she is in, with grace, style and vigour – to make the partone of the strongest women's lead roles I've seen for ages. This is anactress that will go far.Credit should also go to Amandla Stenberg who plays an excellent rolein the portrayal of the young Cataleya.COLUMBIANA is 107mins long, is a PG-13 certificate and will be ongeneral release from Friday, 9th Sept 2011, and is well recommended asa good action thriller with a twist.

Dead Voices

The movie had nice potential to be a good and entertaining actionflick. Story line was decent and writing well done. BUT, here it comes, all, and I mean all, the actors had dead voices. Everyone in this moviesounded bored or retarded...I doubt the actors are to blame, because Ihave seen some of them in other movies. And using the word retarded isno rhetoric on my part, a few of them actually sounded very dim whiledelivering their lines.Summary; A good action movie which was run down by "dead voices". Ifyou like actors who know how to portray little emotion (in fact havelittle) it's your kind of movie.OR.Maybe it was done on purpose. Maybe the director thought that killers, gangsters, federal agents and the like talked in dead boring voices allthe time, because of the terrible hardships of their profession. I amcertainly not an expert on that subject.

A Review of Colombiana from a Colombian

Colombiana stars Zoe Saldana as a girl from Bogota, Colombia whobecomes an assassin after witnessing her parents' murder. That's prettymuch it. There's really no more, no less. The plot is something you'veseen a million times before and the ending is pretty predictable. Thecharacters are not developed very much but that doesn't matter, muchlike my quibbles with the completely inaccurate shooting locations thatpose as Colombia at the beginning of the movie. This is an actionmovie, first and foremost and the movie moves quick enough not to wasteany chance at seeing a good action sequence. Saldana is good in therole and she does a good enough job anchoring the film. The rest can'tbe said about the rest of the movie. I can't to say it was bad. Butsome of the acting range was wildly uneven. Plus some of the film wasdownright laughable. One scene that really stood out to me was thescene where Saldana's character tells her uncle that she wants to be akiller. He tries to convince her to change her mind by taking out a gunand shooting a moving car in broad daylight! In front of other people! That scene alone should make it a eligible candidate to be included onthe podcast "How Did This Get Made". Now despite my reservations withthe lack of character development and the weak plot, I thought it waspretty entertaining trash. It's the type of movie where you leave yourbrain at the door and have a good time.

Colombiana

By the numbers (…but fast pace and adrenaline-rush camera-work help)vigilante actioner with Colombian born Cataleya (Zoe Saldana, intense, athletic, and sexy), transporting herself to Chicago after seeing hermother and father killed in front of her by a drug-lord, trained tokill by Uncle Emilio (Cliff Curtis, reliable as always, in a complexrole which doesn't categorize him as a hero, but has a certain bit ofintegrity and honor about him), becoming a precise hitwoman as anadult. Cataleya is what the FBI call a "tag killer", she leaves a "callingcard" on her victims, an artistic image of a cataleya flower that growsin Colombia. Although the FBI know about the tags, they have kept thisquiet from the media, but in an act of desperation, decide to releasethis information to all news outlets hoping the message reaches itstarget. Jordi Mollà has the heavy part as Marco, the lieutenant for DonLuis (Beto Benites), a drug lord taken out of Colombia and placed in asafe house by the CIA for his connections in the drug trade. Luis knowsthat she is alive and wants Marco to find her before Cataleya findsthem. Easier said than done. Meanwhile, FBI agent, Ross (Lennie James, not bad) is out to catch Cataleya, soon inadvertently helping theexpert assassin get to Luis. Good action scene at the opening with young Amandla Stenberg, asCataleya at age 10, stabbing Marco and successfully fleeing from hismen within the Colombia city (I think Mexico City is a substitute forColombia, but it is a believable replacement), having to evade certaindanger around every street corner, actually leaping through windows ofpeople's houses sometimes. Like all vigilante films, Saldana has asimple goal, despite the hitwoman baggage, and that is to eliminate theman and his posse for taking her family. Also predictable is thecertain outcome that harm will befall her remaining family membersleft. The film does a surprisingly successful job of dodging any bloodshed, the editing style cleverly avoiding explicit gore. This left medisappointed as I like red meat, but to accommodate those wanting alarge audience release, the filmmakers make concessions and the resultis very much a PG-13 action film. The creeps she is paid tocontract-kill are pretty loathsome, even after briefly described to us,so their demises leave little grief, but her challenge to Ross to helpfind Luis' hideout, by threatening his family is certainly in bad tasteand casts a sour stench over her character's heroism. Certainly, thisfilm wants us to sympathize with her situation, but to threaten Ross'family is one step too far. The love interest of artist Danny Delanay(Michael Vartan) is one of the film's weaker aspects as it seems as ifthis is used only as a tool for the FBI to get closer to nabbing her,in essence giving away her location. It does provide a nifty escape forCataleya who much torch her place, but in another storage area, she hasan arsenal similar to watch you see on an army base; it's really funnyall the machine guns she has to her disposal, including an armored vanto carry them. Oh, and Cataleya has two pet bulldogs she feeds red meatto, with a special command to "Eat" which they do immediately upon hersaying so…yep, you can imagine this is a set up for a big scene later. The fight scene between Cataleya and Marco is right out of a Bournefilm, but her jailhouse sequence, where she gets in through a cleverdisguise, uses her ingenuity and small frame to get to a well-guardedmark, executes him, frames a US Marshall who is supposed to be keepingan eye on him, and flees, safely returning to her prison cell, israther awesome. The plot isn't exactly noteworthy, and everything goesthe way you expect.

Good Action scenes makes it watchable !!!

Colombiana was a decent entertainer with stylish action sequences whichis watchable at least once. Cateleye runs for her life after herparents are killed by local mafia. She takes refuge at her father'sfriend and vows to avenge her parent's killings Columbiana is directedby oliver and produced by Luc Besson. Generally , Luc Besson's filmsare more of style and less of substance and this is no different.Director has taken a simple story of blood and revenge. The film startsoff well with few scenes but looses out the steam afterward. But thanksto the nice climax , the movie becomes watchable. Screenplay is loosealong with the story which we've seen so many times in previous flicks.Action scenes are well executed but some of them are not easy todigest. Zoe Saldana is effective in her role as Cateleye. Rest of thestar cast are just about OK Overall , an average flick with good oldaction parts. Watch it if you love stylish action movies. Average 2.5/5

Original Action Sequences and A New Action Hero

I'm glad some of the other reviewers on this site have acknowledgedthat Columbiana is a French film. Having the dialogue in English, pandering to the English speaking market does not detract from thefreshness of what is on the screen. Rather than a Hollywoodpaint-by-numbers exercise in boredom, we are given a wonderfullyempathetic lead character played by Zoe Saldana with completebelievability. Olivier Megaton directs the Luc Besson script with aneye to original twists to clichéd action sequences. I went in expectingless than what I got, and came out wanting to buy the DVD when it isreleased, hoping for a sequel. Far better than most American madesummer fare. Congrats to all.

A movie full of fakes

Since I've been in Colombia lots of times, I was interested in watchingthis movie. Well I was very disappointed, first of all the Colombianspresumably in Bogota are speaking English, ?? and with a bad accent. You would think the film crew would know that Spanish is the languagespoken there, it get even sillier when they greet one another with theword "hola" and then says the rest in English. This is just as silly asin the movie Valkyrie where all the Germans speak English.I don't know where they shot the Bogota scenes, but it's certainly notin Bogota, anyone who lives there, or has visited Bogota will seestraightaway that this is not the correct place. It turns even moresilly, when the scenes changes to Chicago, when they start to speakSpanish, as if it's the custom there. When they screw up in these basicand logical elements, it does not matter how cute and elegant ZoeSaladana is. By the way she's from New Jersey USA.

Lots of potential.

I was excited to see this movie. The cast seemed strong, the premisehad a lot of potential, and I love Colombia. At best, I thought, itcould be entertaining.Unfortunately, this film had a lot of holes in it, and didn't feeldeveloped at all. Cataleya was mysterious enough, but to a fault. Wherewas the transition from child to assassin? Characters were introducedand disappeared without any introduction. Also as a side issue, though the title was "Colombiana" and started offin Colombia, there wasn't much other thought given to the country orculture. They could have at least taken the time to use some Colombianmusic throughout the film. I was especially disappointed that thecharacters didn't speak any substantial amount of Spanish in the film, and instead all spoke with a generic "foreign" accent in English. Thismade the film very inauthentic. For the most part, this film was mildly entertaining. It had a lot ofpotential, and delivered in some small ways, but not enough. It neverreally had me at the edge of my seat, which I think is important for anaction film, and I never felt that Cataleya was put into any reallytough situations.

Zoe Saldana deserves better.

Luc Besson is a well-known writer of several cult classics, and actionfilms including Taken, The Transporter (all films), Unleashed, La FemmeNikita, The Big Blue and The Fifth Element. There's little doubt thatBesson's best work both as director and writer is Leon: TheProfessional, or as it's become known, The Professional. TheProfessional helped launch the careers of Jean Reno, Natalie Portmanand Gary Oldman and is an IMDb top 300 film. Colombiana is in many wayssimilar to The Professional. Colombiana has a young Cataleya (AmandlaStenberg) witness her parents' deaths. The Professional has a younggirl named Mathilda (Natalie Portman in her first feature film) comehome from grocery shopping -for her dysfunctional family- and findeveryone, including her 4-year old brother, dead. Mathilda walks rightby her apartment, to the apartment of Leon, who happens to be ahit-man. Cataleya makes her way to Chicago (from South America) and heruncle Emilio's home, he happens to set up hits for a living. Both menare eventually persuaded to teach the young girls the ways of anassassin. This is pretty much where the similarities end however, whichis unfortunate for Colombiana.Olivier Megaton directs Colombiana. His name is appropriate; there is amega-ton of action (with little flare) and a mega-ton of scantily cladZoe Saldana (with little reason.) Saldana deserves better than thisfilm. She had a strong performance as Uhura in Star Trek and backed itup with a terrific performance as Princess Neytiri in Avatar. She ismore than capable of being the action star this film needed her to be,unfortunately it squandered her abilities by leaving scenes on thetable. There were scenes in which we simply cut out large portions ofaction to instead focus on ludicrous stealth sequences. For instance, there is a scene where Cataleya must infiltrate a mansion, in which shewinds up in a (somewhat unconventional) pool. The scene would have hadgreat promise with stronger writing, but there are too many questionsabout the scene. For one, unless she somehow drilled into the pool frombeyond the fat-cat's property, how did she get in it? Second, did shereally gain anything by being in the pool? It's not like the poolextended into the mansion. It really seemed like the movie equivalentof Shaggy and Scooby Doo leaping in the window to unlock the door, thenleaping back out the window to enter via the door. It didn't makesense. I don't mind movies pushing the envelope or stretching theimagination. The problem with Colombiana is it's not bold enough to beconsidered true b-movie fare, but too cheesy and focused on anever-ending striptease to be considered much else. Cataleya'sboyfriend (Michael Vartan) tries to add a sense of normalcy to the filmbut their interactions actually tended to add to the awkwardness, atone point I wondered if they had ever spoken to one another. The filmitself isn't entirely terrible, but the story lags and the actionsequences just aren't up to par for a film whose main concern is theaction. If all you're going to do is shoot stuff up, at least shoot itup real good.

The positive reviews were written by children !!!!

My wife and I had the misfortune of stumbling into this (the world'sworst movie) this evening. I can't recall the last time I saw a moviethis horrible......EVER. I should have known that we were in troublewhen I realized we were the only people in the theater over the age of17. This was actually the only time I was not annoyed by kidsconstantly texting during the movie.....it was a welcome distractionfrom the torture of having to watch this trainwreck. The plot pointswere sensational and ridiculous, the story was absolutely stupid, andthe script was obviously written by a 14 year old. I found myselfgiggling at the stupidity from about the 5 minute mark on. It was areal challenge to stay for the entire movie hoping it would somehow getbetter but it did not. When the credits started rolling, the theaterfilled with snickers and phrases such as "worst movie ever" and "thatwas really stupid". I heard one guy say "I wonder if we could get ourmoney back". Do yourself a favor and avoid this piece of garbage at allcosts!!!!

Zoe Saldana does a wonderful job!

Zoe Saldana does a wonderful job in Colombiana! It was a great movie -exactly what I expected plus more. The movie had the requisite action, strong female character, plus believable emotion. The story was tightand the director did a terrific job of pacing, editing and visualstorytelling. The young child actor was so wonderful: expressive andemotive with a great physicality. I was really looking forward to thismovie and it surpassed my expectations - unlike another Cowboy movie Iwon't name.I hope to see more movies with Zoe in the lead - hopefully, she canfind a franchise.

High scale crap

I saw exactly what I was afraid of. A pure Luc Besson very entertainingand sleepless crap product. Even filled wit pills, you stay awake allalong this high power movie absolutely full of emptiness. No sense atall in this story of vengeance, where the characterization is reallyawful, terrible and every sequence incredible at possible. You couldfill a library only in describing all the unbelievable situations ofthis film. You also may recognize a Luc Besson's piece of work at firstsight. As some decades ago, with Cannon Group - Golan Globus -'s crap.Such a shame that Olivier Megaton - the director of LA SIRENE ROUGE -chose to make films with Besson. He made the wrong choice, see forinstance LE TRANSPORTEUR 3. He penetrates in his own doom.

Not a Good Movie

If I could have thought of anything else to do I would have left! The heroine looking for revenge forgot that her parents put themselvesAND her in the position she was in - Not to mention her uncle, also amurderer! So we are to sympathize with her as she threatens law enforcement toaccomplish her revenge - Not for me! Basically "Hannah" with darker skin and from a much more evil family. Here is an idea, tell a story of the daughter rising above the evilnessthat was her life and maybe only becoming violent to protect herself -If you need the violence. Don't go see this!

It wasn't awful, nor was it good. It's exactly what you'll expect. A cheesy action movie.Don't expect any Oscar worthy performances, character development, amazing storyline or VFX.I went to watch this after a hard week at work, and I'm glad I did..Ididn't have to think to much or try to take it in.Go watch this with a group of friends and enjoy some cheesy fun!

You get what you expect no more no less

Generally you know what to expect when Luc Besson takes a skinny prettyactress and makes her a ruthless killer. Lots of "fun" action. We'veseen it before in the Bridget Fonda movie. There are lots of inventiveand slightly comical ways to perish here. And that is fun to watch. ZoeSaldana is rail thin there and acts alright. I was worried she'd breakin two sometimes. Her also thin beau played by Michael Vartan has asmall role. The cast of criminals is typical drug lord type and is abit stereotypical as in all of Luc Besson's movies. The locations are abit ugly - well it is called Colombiana so what do you expect. Theviolence is not too gruesome more just amusing. Didn't like it as muchas Taken. The plot here has some good points in the almost Bond likeway she handles her tasks. But is a bit less feel good and it leaves abit of a not so nice feeling in the end. The whole revenge for killingfamily thing has been done a few too many times. A couple of biggername supporting cast might have helped. Overall go see it if you are aBesson fan otherwise it isn't a must see.

Zoe is Colombiana

¨Never forget where you came from.¨Zoe Saldana is this year's Angelina Jolie, although instead of playingAgent Salt, she is a Colombian assassin who is set at avenging herparent's killers. The movie is action packed and Saldana shines in herrole proving she can be a lead action star. The plot is simple andwe've seen thousands of these revenge movies, but that doesn't mean wecan't be entertained with the premise. Colombiana isn't a memorablefilm and it doesn't add anything to the existing girl power slashrevenge genre, but it is entertaining nonetheless. It is verypredictable, we've seen the action scenes before hundreds of times, butSaldana makes the movie worth watching. She is great in her role andlooks better than ever. As for the rest of the cast they were allpretty much forgettable. There weren't any interesting villains either, everything centered towards Saldana. Director Olivier Megaton(Transporter 3) may perhaps have made his best film to date, althoughit won't be very memorable. His movies are simplistic action centeredfilms with little character development and several plot holes. Thisfilm was written by Luc Besson who in my opinion directed one of thebest action films of the 90's: Leon the Professional, but he hasfocused on writing now and he has had his shares of hits and misses. This is probably not one of his best efforts, but I still had a goodtime in the theater nonetheless thanks in most part to Zoe Saldana whowas very entertaining in her Nikita-like role. The movie begins in 1992 in a small city of Colombia where a mobsternamed Don Luis (Beto Benites) orders his bodyguard Marco (Jordi Molla)to kill a family because he has been betrayed by the father. Ten yearold Cataleya (Amandla Stenberg) sees how these mobsters murder herparents, but somehow eludes the mobsters after her dad gives her anescape plan. She manages to arrive in Chicago where her uncle Emilio(Cliff Curtis) raises her. Emilio is a hit-man, and young Cataleya askshim to teach her how to be an assassin. She wants to avenge herparents' death. The film then jumps to the present where we see an allgrown up Cataleya (Zoe Saldana) doing what she does best: killing. Shehas become a cold blooded assassin, but what Emilio doesn't know isthat while she is murdering her targets she is also leaving her mark inorder to get the mobs attention back home. Her mark is a Cataleyaorchid which is only grown in the Colombian town where she grew up. TheFBI agent in charge of tracking her down is Ross (Lennie James) who hasno clue as to who he is supposed to be looking for. When he finallydecides to release the details of the murders to the media, the mobfinally receives the message and decide it's time to search forCataleya. The only problem is that she has kept secluded to herself, her only contact being Emilio himself and a boyfriend with whom shebarely communicates: Danny (Michael Vartan). The movie opens with a very interesting action scene, probably the bestin the film where we see the mobsters chasing the young Cataleyathrough the Colombian streets. Amandla Stenberg plays her characterreally well although she is only in the first 15 minutes, and thenSaldana takes over from then. The rest of the characters are prettymuch all forgettable and so are most of the action scenes. I did enjoythe movie although I know there is nothing new or original about it.Colombiana only serves to prove that Saldana can be a lead actress andthat she can be great in better scripts. I enjoyed the film in the sameway I enjoyed Salt, so if you didn't like that movie than you probablywon't enjoy this one. The editing action scenes are very similar tothose of The Transporter so you have a lot of cuts and sometimes theaction is hard to follow. Colombiana is still an enjoyable film if youdon't go into it with much expectation.http://estebueno10.blogspot.com/

Need to add a kilo of salt

OK, we all know this is an action film, so story-line or minor detailcan be ignored. But this film made me very tired while watching it because of themassive illogical details. The actions are normal, full of guns and explode and that's all. Actorsact very cursory like "Okey, we just do it and let's think about thenext film." Anyway, if you watching it while eating dinner, it is fine, but if youseriously turn off the light, make sure popcorn is ready, you will bedisappointed.

Suspension of disbelief is not enough...

Firstly, though this film may, MAY, rate a four, I'm rating lower toeven the field.I'm amazed at all the positive reviews. Acting is hardly mediocre, mostespecially the lead. Flat even for a cliché role. And the plot isatrociously contrived and ends up with more holes than the bad guys.Foremost: Cataleya is not searched after being arrested. You can't plowinto a police car, drunk, and expect to see daylight until a verysubstantial bail is payed in cash AFTER an arraignment. Ohhh, and ajail that has pop-open ventilation grills? Fed Cops put a high riskinmate in a cell without inspecting it first? The list goes on.Why did the CIA sit idly after letting the Colombian dogs out and notalert the Feds? Did they not think to follow the hounds they set free?Surely at least to have the Feds watch the safehouse as the CIA isjurisdiction bound to operate only off US soil. How and why did theFeds suddenly go from a precinct full of suspects to a drunk womanwhose cell picture suddenly becomes a 3D image to verify a match thatwarrants a swat assault without further surveillance? And does ourHeroine get a van inside a CIA safe-house unnoticed by either CIA orthe Cartel after poking her hottest buttons?
