Plot Summary:
Fan-favorite filmmaker Kevin Smith (Clerks, Chasing Amy) directs the first movie he didnt write himself Cop Out, starring Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan (30 Rock) as mismatched cops. When a bust goes wrong, they get suspended, forcing Willis to sell a treasured baseball card in order to pay for his daughters wedding. But while selling the card, it gets stolen, sending the pair on a wild chase featuring a parkour-loving housebreaker, a hot Latina trapped in the trunk of a Mercedes-Benz, a 10-year-old car thief, and a lot of other goofiness. Its hard to believe that Smith didnt have a hand in the writing, as the comedy has all of his loose, ramshackle habits (and his reliance on jokes about poop and male genitalia)--though much of it also has the feel of being improvised by Willis and Morgan. Cop Out wants to mock buddy-cop movies, but it also wants to be a buddy-cop movie these conflicting impulses are never harmonized, so the whole movie feels out of tune. The star-studded supporting cast includes Jason Lee, Michelle Trachtenberg, Seann William Scott, Fred Armisen, Kevin Pollak, Adam Brody, Rashida Jones, and Susie Essman.

Really, really bad.Hmm, where to begin? Can we all agree that Kevin Smith's strongesttrait has always been his dialog? I'm not exactly his biggest fan, but I appreciate his distinct style.Smith's direction has never been his strong point, but he knows how towrite clever, post-Tarantino, crude dialog. It almost always works(let's forget Jersey Girl per his own instructions). The biggest problem with "Cop Out" is that it's the first time Smithhas directed someone else's script, and the script is *awful*. It'ssome of the worst dialog I've heard in a film through the past decade(and I watched all those terrible "Not Another..." movies).Smith's strength has never been directing, and I think even he wouldagree with that statement. His pacing is slack and indecisive; "CopOut" is almost two hours long and should have been about thirty minutesshorter.I'm a big fan of both Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan, but both areunderplayed here. Willis, frankly, has never looked more stiff orbored; once in a while he turns in a gem of an actor's performance(think "Unbreakable"), but I've never seen him strain so hard to remaincredible as he did here.Tracy Morgan is terrifically funny in "30 Rock," but he's better insmaller doses. Smith gives him too much free reign here, and he justbecomes obnoxious. That really pains me to say, because I'm a fan ofhis and I've been waiting a while for him to achieve mainstreamsuccess, but this film plays to all his worst traits. It's a bummer towatch.Smith has absolutely no sense of direction whatsoever. When the badreviews began pouring in, he took to his Twitter to attempt to refutethem; he claimed that the critics didn't "understand" what he wastrying do.Hey, Kevin? Critics aren't that dumb, believe it or not. Right down tothe Harold Faltermeyer score, it's painfully obvious that he'sattempting to pay homage to the mixed-race buddy-comedies of the 1980s;problem is, "Cop Out" just plain sucks. It tries to parody the genrewhile simultaneously playing to it; imagine someone trying to mockLethal Weapon while, at the same time, creating a legitimate sequel. It's bad.Guillermo DÃÂaz is probably a really nice guy, but he's a terribleover-actor (and ruined every scene he appeared in for the last seasonof "Weeds"), and he only increased the distance from the film to itsaudience. Kevin Pollak and Adam Brody are given painfully awkward andunfunny sub-plots that amount to nothing.Want a good Tracy Morgan movie? Keep holding on and go watch repeats of"30 Rock" in the meanwhile. Want a good Bruce WIllis movie? Re-watchthe "Die Hard series." Want a good Kevin Pollak movie? Well...He's been in a lot of bad movies, hasn't he.The best element of the film is Sean William Scott's limited role. Andyou know what? The script lethargically discards him towards the end.His death isn't even funny -- it's just lazy.I've seen a lot of movies during my lifetime. Probably too many. (Youcan witness my IMDb commenting history for proof of that sad fact.) Ifound this film to be one of the most absolutely, awkwardly directedand edited mainstream films of all time. I don't even know how todescribe it...it's like the editor had no clue where to cut scenes. It's just bizarre to watch. It's amusing that, as of today, it's KevinSmith's most profitable domestic film ($36 mil and counting) -- butmoney has never been indicative of quality. Go watch "Clerks" or"Chasing Amy" again and if you feel an urge to watch a funnybuddy-comedy, watch "Midnight Run." And if you want to see Bruce Willisin one of his rare recently cool roles, go watch the music video forGorillaz' "Stylo." His performance there is roughly 96.7% better thanin "Cop Out," which is -- no pun intended, I guess? -- a total cop out. |

Is this a joke? This is supposed to be a comedy, allegedly. I only know that becauseit's advertised as a comedy, though - you certainly wouldn't knowbecause of any funny moments in the film. It's a buddy cop movie, whereBruce Willis looks as though he's overdosed on Valium and Tracy Morganmakes up for that by doing what I can only describe as a minstrel showroutine.I don't want to get on my high horse about what's supposed to be alight-hearted action cop movie, but then again I didn't want to getangry after a light-hearted action cop movie, either. Angry aboutMorgan's performance, a gibbering, cavorting, screeching act thatwouldn't have been out of place in the days of Stepin Fetchit. Angryabout the fact that no one involved seemed to give a toss - in factthey might as well have spent the whole movie just standing there, holding up two middle fingers at the audience. But I'm angry most of all at Kevin Smith, the director of this piece ofutter garbage. He used to be talented. He used to make great movieslike Clerks, Dogma, even Mallrats. Yeah, that's right, I'm the guy wholiked Mallrats. These days he churns out lazy rubbish and then goes onTwitter and whines at anyone who dares to criticise it. He's thrown histalent away, and he's so wrapped up in the bubble of his ownself-importance that he doesn't seem to realise it. By making a filmlike this, and clearly not caring at all about how it turned out, he'sshown his complete contempt for movie-goers, fans and the smokingwreckage of his own career. Well done, Kevin. Well done. |

While this mash-up doesn't produce results on par with the best of the genres it draws on, it still provides plenty of laughs. |

What was Willis thinking?A very disappointing Bruce Willis picture, half comedy half policethriller, but really neither nor. The black actor who plays Willis'partner thinks he is so funny but most of the time he so isn't. I thinkit is probably the weakest ever film with Willis in it, and it issaying a lot. The young white dude who plays the "parkour" guy looksbloated and tired, and his role is very poorly written. Mexicans areshown in a rather racist, negative manner, as brutal but stupidcriminals. All in all a waste of time and effort. And once again: therule here to have a minimum length of 10 lines of review isridiculous!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is possible to say more in 10 words than in10 lines. |

A Fun MovieThis is a fun movie with a few scenes that will make you laugh hard. I think people started watching this movie with some high expectations. Just start watching it without judging it first and you will enjoy. Not a 5-star, but definately not a 1-star either. |

Surprisingly funnyPlot: A pair of cops try to hunt down the criminals who stole the rareand expensive baseball card that one of them needs to pay for hisdaughter's dream wedding. On the face of it this ought to be a terrible film. Astonishingly thisis actually really very funny - in places. The result is a patchwork:at times the jokes just fall flat whilst at others you'll laughing likea maniac. The plot is a formality that only serves as a basic quest(get the card back). The Mexican villain, a baseball memorabiliaobsessed gangster, is remarkably dull. The soundtrack, bar Cypress Hillin Spanish, is so terrible that you wonder if it isn't a joke too. Thelong running joke that Tracey Morgan's wife is being unfaithful isexcellent - no doubt helped by Director Kevin Smith's own massivemarital insecurity (he's a fat, neck-bearded nerd). Bruce Willis isclearly just making cash but who cares, he makes a good straight guy toMorgan's silly man. Star of the show is Sean William Scott as ascat-obsessed burglar who gets all the best lines (such as persuading afellow prisoner to admit that he knits sweaters). The humour throughoutis thoroughly vulgar, obsessed with the usual bodily functions, but thesheer childishness of it works in its favour as it never takes itselfseriously enough for it to really become offensive, although this isdefinitely not one for your maiden aunt (probably). Overall, goodstupid fun. |

I was really hoping that Kevin Smith would mix all his 80's inspirations together and come up with something new - kind of like Quentin Tarantino does with his influences. That doesn't happen. |

Complete waste of time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm shouting by the wayLet me start by saying I actually walked out of the theater this moviewas so bad! I love Bruce Willis (Tracy Morgan has his moments)and wasexpecting a lot from this film. The plot was interesting and had a lotof promise to be a very entertaining film. That didn't happen. TracyMorgan was a complete joke(NOT THE FUNNY KIND). He wasn't funny andreally took away from Bruce Willis in a comedy role, which Bruce hasdone before and done well. Tracys antics came off has just plainannoying and way over the top. I spent half the film just waiting onhim to stop talking long enough for Bruce to step up as the true bad*** that he his. Neither ever happened. It didn't help that these two"cops", I use the term loosely, were completely incompetent. They havebeen partners for 9 years!! Are you kidding me! The writing didn't helpsell this partnership either. This should go down as the worst crimefighting duo in history. I actually read where some one compared themto Lethal Weapon. WOW! Not even close! Lets set aside the fact that Meland Danny actually knew how to be cops but guess what! They were funnytoo! "COP OUT" is 0-2 for that. If Danny had been that distracted bythese ridiculous antics, a lousy cell phone call or a silly teddy bear,It's certain they wouldn't have made it past Lethal Weapon 1... Saveyour money |

A very sad attemptOk, so this is a cop movie, 2 cops, serious white guy (Bruce Willis) and stereotypical bumbling black guy. So lets consider the primary aspects of the movie:1) Story line: An extremely weak plot. A snitch tells 2 bumbling cops about a narcotics drop off. The cops have a stake out (with just 2 guys), it goes foul, snitch dies. In comes a drug baron, a very very cheesy mexican dude with equally cheesy Mexican actors as side kicks. I live in LA, and I know mexican tough guys, these guys are the kinder garden variety. Seems the drug baron has lost a car. White guy (Bruce) has daughter's wedding, needs 50g's, decides to sell a rare baseball card. Card gets stolen by Stifler (from American pie... of Stifler's Mom fame). Stifler is in to parcour (Street jumping) and steals the baseball card, which he sells to the drug lord. Then comes the worst ever street jumping clip ever filmed. I mean if I had a retarded little brother, who had polio... probably he could jump better. Drug lord strikes a deal with the cops, get the car... get the baseball card back. Hmmm.. didnt know any NY cops who were soft enough to let a street hood call the shots. Anyway, these 2 evidently allow it. They trace the car.. By interrogating a 11 year old car jacker! JESUS! Car has been sold to a russian attorney. Honestly... NY lawyers make enough money to buy new cars (especially if living in a mansion with a swimming pool and detached garage as shown here), and any lawyer knows better than to deal in stolen goods and have his license revoked. /facepalm!The cops get the car, and surprisingly, there is a girl in the trunk, thumping away. Evidently she has been there 2 days. And no one noticed it, with all the dealings with the car...while stealing the car, changing the number plates (as you would expect car thieves to do) or while the car was being sold to the lawyer.Well, the cops find the girl. She is the ex-mistress of a Mexican drug baron, who our NY drug baron killed. She has a flash drive with the mexican baron's bank information. Passwords and cash amounts. (How convinient). She gives the 2 cops the slip, and leaves the flash drive (her only bargaining chip) behind. She is eventually caught by the NY drug baron.Insane twist : Stifler is being held for felony robbery, assault with a deadly weapon, Assault on a police officer. I believe that the bail for that would be around a couple of million dollars, but ... guess what... Bruce willis, who doesnt have 50 g's for his kid's wedding, has dough enough to bail him. BIG hole in the plot!Plan: stifler is going to go in to the NY drug baron's house (which everyone seems to know where it is...) and its a condemned house (by the looks of it). Stifler falls off the roof and dies (Lol). the cops are in a shoot out. The bad guys die. Black dude finds out from nanny cam his wife isnt cheating on him. Bruce's wife's 2nd husband pays for the wedding. The flash drive is forgotten. You are left with a wtf feeling.Take "Shutter Island" for example. It had one story to tell, which it did solidly. Genius, Scorsese style. Take "Cop Out", mindless plot made up by a writer who is obviously on some serious drugs. There is NOTHING which ties up. The story line is absolutely nonsense. There is some lame attempts at slapstick humor, but it is horribly presented.Acting: Bruce willis is a respected actor. He must have been seriously compromised (wine or women?) to take up this pathetic role. His team up with the black dude is really really ill matched. There is absolutely no on screen chemistry. There is a scene, where the black guy literally pouts and says "PUH LEEEEAAASSE... look at the nanny cam I put in my wife's bedroom to find out if she is cheating on me. I am too gutless to look, please look and tell me what happens." How lame is that.... The acting makes you disrespect Bruce Willis. Everyone else is pretty bad as well. Well, you get it, with such a plot, and such direction, no one can really look good.It is an utter waste of time. It is so much fail.. let alone paying to see it on a theatre, or paying to rent the DVD or pay per view.. Dont even download it for free. LAWL. Its total fail!Kaz, LA April 2010. |

AmateurishIt's easy to define the problems with Cop Out: story and dialogue. The dialogue is so immature you'd think your twelve-year oldmasturbating, video-playing, teenager wrote it. And the story? Come on Mark and Robb Cullen, this was the creativestory pushing at you? These were the characters begging you to bringthem to life? Two bunglers – not one - wrote this awkward mess starring Bruce Willis(Jimmy Monroe) and Tracy Morgan (Paul Hodges) as suspended NY cops whoget caught up with Mexican drug dealers in Brooklyn. At the same time,Willis is after his rare baseball card and Morgan the truth about hiswife's supposed infidelities. I have three questions: 1. How do pitches like this make it into a Warner Brothers' boardroom?2. Why do amateurish movies like this one get produced? 3. Does Mr.Willis actually read a screenplay before committing? It used to be that bad movies were shelved. Now they get put on DVD. Shame on you Bruce Willis! |

Best buddy cop action/comedy since Lethal WeaponI knew this movie hadn't rocked the box office, but I love BruceWillis, Tracy Morgan, Seann William Scott and Kevin Smith, so I had towatch it.Of course the plot is pretty weak, but action is sufficiently highenergy for most males and the Willis/Morgan chemistry is great and theyare excellent straight/funny men. Scott added into the mix doing somereally annoying, but funny, ad libbing meant that I thoroughly enjoyedthis film. I must have had a good out-loud laugh every couple ofminutes. If you liked Lethal Weapon, Beverly Hills Cop, or watch 30 Rock, thisis worth your time. |

I lasted 29 minutes...Tracey Morgan is not an actor, Bruce Willis slept through this one, I can't say it is the worst movie ever because I turned it off after 29 minutes. If someone gave me this movie for free I would pay them $5 to take it back. |

The Title of the Movie Says It AllKevin Smith is one of my favorite modern filmmakers, but everyone makesmistakes and Smith's latest is COP OUT. I really wanted to enjoy thismovie. Unfortunately, the movie was so mediocre that I found myattention wandering through most of it. The film, Smith's attempt atrecreating the fun of 80's buddy cop films, stars Bruce Willis andTracey Morgan as two disgraced cops who are suspended after a botchedstake-out. The timing couldn't be worse, as Jimmy (Willis) is trying topay for his daughter's wedding. He decides to sell off a rare baseballcard to raise the funds, but a robbery relieves him of the card beforehe can. Jimmy and his long-time partner Paul (Morgan) set out to trackdown the baseball card and find themselves in the middle of a case tobring down a local drug lord who hopes to expand his business.See, it even sounds like an 80s buddy cop movie!! The problem here isthat the film isn't funny enough to be a full comedy, and the actionisn't strong enough to be a decent action film. So it just sits in themiddle, failing to appease people who watched it for either reason.Smith has created some of my favorite comedies (DOGMA was awesome, andJAY & SILENT BOB STRIKE BACK is one of my guilty pleasures), but thosewere films he'd written and directed. Here, the writing duties had beengiven to Robb and Mark Cullen. I've never seen anything written by theCullens and, thanks to COP OUT, I'm not in any real rush to do so.Smith's trademark borderline-juvenile comedy that usually has melaughing so hard I can't breathe is pretty much gone (though he doesmanage to toss in his obligatory STAR WARS reference) and replaced bycringe-worthy low(er) brow toilet humor. The problem isn't just with the writing and weak action sequences, it'swith the casting. I love Willis but he doesn't really seem to get muchto work with, and for most of the movie he comes off as bored. Morganwas all right back in the day on SNL and he's pretty good on 30 ROCK,but he grinds on my nerves here. He has a few funny moments, but youneed more than a few when you're helping carry an entire feature. Theworst bit of casting came in the form of Guillermo Diaz as Poh Boy, thedrug lord villain. Maybe it's because I can only remember him asScarface from HALF-BAKED but I couldn't take any of his bad guy schtickseriously. Sean William Scott has the only real funny role in the movieas the S**t Bandit (so named because the cops spy him using thebathroom in the middle of a burglary). Scott earns the most laughs withhis eccentric, childish games eating away at Paul's nerves.I don't consider COP OUT a bad movie, because it's not so terribly donethat I can't watch it. It has a couple fun moments but they're notenough to save the movie. The film never rises above mediocre and Ihope this serves as a lesson to Smith that he should continue to writehis own movies. I'm sure if he had put this together himself, itwould've been light years better and we'd be applauding Smith fortrying a new genre instead of wishing he hadn't. |

I've Seen Worse Buddy-Cop FilmsWhen I think of laugh-out-loud buddy-cop films, flicks such as RushHour, Lethal Weapon, Running Scared, Beverly Hills Cop, and 48 Hours, come to mind. Heck, Clint Eastwood's Dirty Harry movies are funnierthan most films in this sub-genre, despite the fact that Dirty Harrywasn't exactly a buddy to his cop partners and considering these filmsare supposed to be action-thrillers. Enough beating around thebush--what I'm trying to say is Tracy Morgan is no Eddie Murphy--oreven Jackie Chan for that matter. That said, I still felt this moviewasn't a complete waste of time. I would recommend this film to thosewho have a stomach for off-color jokes and foul-mouthed dialog. Yes,this movie did have its moments, even though these were few and farbetween. Tracy Morgan's on screen character Paul hit below the beltfiguratively with his crude word choice and literally, when he punchedan 11-year-old carjacker in the groin. They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. So I'm guessingKevin Smith was sincere in his parodies, satires, and outright ripoffsof buddy-cop films which preceded this one. So perhaps this may be thereason why in the opening scene, Detective Paul calls his reciting ofmovie lines an homage, as he impersonates Al Pacino's character fromScarface and Denzel Washington's character from Training Day. And Ishould add that this is the first film that he has directed in which hehas not written the screenplay for, so realistically he shouldn'tshoulder all the blame for the movie coming across as cliché.I've got to admit that I have a difficult time empathizing withcharacters who are depicted as shameless buffoons. So during the scenewhere Paul was getting teary eyed when he imagined his wife wascheating on him and when he discovered his partner Jimmy was lying tohim about what was contained on the video, I didn't feel an inkling ofsorrow for Paul. While growing up, I had a younger brother who used torepeat what I said in a sarcastic manner, and it was a bit irritating. So I got a kick out of Sean William Scott, who played the role of Dave, who in a couple of scenes recited verbatim what Detective Paul, andlater a prison inmate, said, driving them bonkers. In my opinion, thosewere the funniest scenes in the film. This comedy didn't have much of a story. The major plot elementsrevolved around the recovering of Jimmy's 1952 Andy Pafkomint-condition baseball card which was supposedly worth eighty-thousanddollars, in order to pay for his daughters fifty-thousand dollarwedding reception. If Jimmy were to have sold it at a collectiblesshop, he wouldn't have to have gone on a wild-goose chase. But thenthat would have made for an even more boring story. So just when Jimmyis about to sell the card, a pair of thieves come into the store andtaser him, while running off with it. What are the odds of somethinglike this happening in real life? From here on out, Jimmy's primaryfocus is on recovering his stolen property. Jimmy uses his detectiveskills to track down Dave. To complicate matters, Dave had already soldthe card to Mexican drug kingpin Poh Boy, a baseball memorabiliaaficionado. And all hell breaks loose, in the form of shootouts, carchases, and more shootouts with gangbangers, which ends in the killingof Poh Boy. Unfortunately, while Jimmy shoots Poh Boy right smack dabin the middle of his forehead, Paul's bullet hits him in the chest, butnot before piercing a hole in Jimmy's baseball card which Poh Boy wascarrying in his inside coat pocket. Roy, who is married to Jimmy'sex-wife, ends up paying for the wedding. As anyone with half a braincan understand, all of this senseless violence could have been avoidedif Jimmy allowed Roy to cover the reception tab in the first place. Here's just another example of a film where the performances weredecent but the film script was severely lacking in the creativitydepartment. Bruce Willis, Tracy Morgan and Sean William Scott all havecomedic talent, but they still need something to work with in order tocreate movie magic. Have we reached the point where every film worthmaking has already been made, so all movie producers and directors cando is release films based on derivatives of previously releasedmaterial? Of course, year after year, Hollywood continues to churn out,at the minimum, a handful of films which can be considered Oscar baitworthy. But what about the hundreds of other films which struggle toentertain critics and moviegoers alike? Cop Out would definitelybelongs in that category. |

The movie wants to send up hoary action- and buddy-movie clichés, including the tinge of gay attraction that passes between the stars. But it's too fuzzily executed to pass muster as satire. Plus, it loves the clichés too much to subvert them. |
