Down hill.Desperate Housewives began with a bang in season 1 but with a revolvingdoor of cast changes starting in season 2 and the 5 year time jump,Marc Cherry might as well drive a nail through the series coffin. Forthe past 2 seasons, the series has had a number of recycled stories. The latest falls on Susan Mayer who is once again unlucky in love andhaving issues with her love life. Tom, Lynnette's husband is once againfinding ways to liven up his miserable existence to his miserable hagof a wife. The show needs to end this season or next at the most.Further delays would severely cripple what remains of this one timehit. |

Desperate for ratingsDesperate Housewives is one of those shows that starts out with so muchpromise, only to then fall flat on its face. I had just finishedwatching the entire Showtime series The L Word -- which followed asimilar course -- and at first I thought that Desperate Housewives waseverything that The L Word was not -- well written, well directed, andwell acted. However, by the end of the first season, it became clearthat, like The L Word, DH suffers from insatiablematerialism/consumerism/narcissism, annoying over the top acting, andunbelievable/unsympathetic characters. Fresh, engaging writing quicklydevolved into tired, trite, predictable silliness. These people makeabsolute messes out of their lives by lying and conniving, then donothing but whine about their predicaments. And we're supposed to feelsorry for them? Identify with them? Be entertained by them? I don'tthink so. If DH had ended after season 1, it might have become aclassic one hit wonder. As it turns out...it's just anotherinsufferable series portraying women as bad and men as worse, all thewhile attempting to glorify that most lamentable desperation. |

Oh, come on, people, it's LETTER TO THREE WIVESWhich is not an altogether bad thing. The 'burbs deserve a roasting asbadly these days as a different kind of suburb warranted satirizing 55years ago. It's flawed, and it's a hell of a lot of fun, and we may never knowabout the body in the chest, but it's got a cross-demographic appealthat scripted television hasn't pulled off in years. What I find baffling is this lazy journalism (or maybepseudo-journalism) wherein we are repeatedly told we are watching thenew "PASSIONS,'" the new "DYNASTY," the new whatever. There's no need to legitimize your enthusiasm for something bycomparing it to programs past. It's been a long time since a scripted, evening show actually hadpeople talking. And the very fact that people aren't even sure whythey're talking, is probably the best part. |

It's Sex in the Suburbs, or is it?Unfortunately in the land of Oz, it can take us ages before we see thelatest hit television shows from the US; and before I had seenDesperate Housewives, I thought it may be along the lines of Sex andthe City, except it was set in the suburbs. However I was wrong, andDesperate Housewives is 100 times better than Sex and the City. Still Ido like watch Sex and the City.Oh yeah back to Desperate Housewives. From the first episode, you cansee that Desperate Housewives was destined to become cult TV. With mosttelevision shows, I tend to become quite bored, quite early. Yetthrough out the years; the script writers of Desperate Housewives havemanaged to maintain my interest in this fantastic show. With Desperate Housewives, they try to unmask the mysteries ofconservative suburbia. The show examines the issues of relationships, homosexuality, pedophilia; all the things that are not meant to happenon our local streets. Yet the reality is, no place within the westernworld is shielded from these issues. The success of DH is also based on the characters of the show; andthose fine ladies who are honest to their characters. The way MarciaGross has managed to capture the essence of Bree Van Der Kamp isabsolutely brilliant. The problem with Bree's Conservative facade, herson is gay, and the daughter is the girl of the town, and lets notforget how her former husband had a kinky side.By the way, it is was a masterstroke, how they casted Terri Hatcher toplay the part of Susan Myers. In short, Terri Hatcher was born to playthe part of Susan Myers. Also Gabriella, Susan, and Edie do have a function, as they are meantto appeal to the different aspects of our complex lives. By the way, mybrains nearly exploded, when Zack Young was in pursuit of Gabriella. On the whole, Desperate Housewives is a fantastic show. Again withgreat script writers, great actors, and great characters, this showwill continue through out the ages. Desperate Housewives is not so suchmuch a television show, it's art in motion. |

Must SeeThis show is awesome. I am addicted to this like I am the Soprano's.After the show is over, I just want to watch more. Felicity Huffman isawesome in everything that she does (especially Sports Night). I amglad to see her back in another leading role. She is a beautiful middleaged woman, her character is great and she acts every line outperfectly. Terri Hatcher is great too, I didn't realize I missed heruntil she came back. Eva Longoria is absolutely gorgeous. Did you knowshe was Miss Corpus Christi, TX. USA. For some reason Texas has so manybeautiful women. ABC seems to be doing really well this season(Complete Savages is worth watching too). I Hope it lasts a long time. |

It was good from the beginning and remains amazing!Okay, I keep hearing that everyone thinks that the show has lost a lot,but really season 3 has brought so many great things! It seems likeevery show people say its fresh and great but then season 2 comes andthere's always something wrong! But in the terms of Desperate Housewiveit only got better, I loved season 2 and 3 far better then season 1,yeah season 1 was good but it wasn't as good as s2 and s3. TheApplewhite storyline was alittle rushed and the housewives did driftalittle apart but i find it had more dramatic attention grabbingthings! And I read this comment about none of the people having morals, well what did you expect no one in this world does!!!! I just get sickof people constantly bashing a wonderful show! Don't pick it apart!! |

"Desperate Housewives" - The End of Reality TVDesperate Housewives 4.0-5.0 Stars. Starring Teri Hatcher, MarciaCross, Felicity Huffman, Eva Longoria, and James Denton. Desperate Housewives was a surprise for me at the end of 2004. With toomany reality TV shows involving Housewives such as "Nanny-911" and"Trading Spouses", I had assumed that this would be similar. Thoughthis show is nothing like that, but is however a cullinan diamond inthe rough. The show starts off with a bang; we venture into the livesof five regular housewives on Wisteria Lane where life seems to benothing but tea and crumpets until the sudden mysterious suicide ofMary Alice Young (Brenda Strong). Suspicions start as a secret unfoldsone after another about Mary Alice's Seemingly perfect life when ablackmail note is discovered in her drawers. "I know what you did, Itmakes me sick, I'm going to tell" it reads, as her four friends Susan(Hatcher), Bree (Cross), Lynnette (Huffman), and Garielle (Longoria)try to uncover the secret their friend had tried so desperately tohide, that she would eventually die for it. Even worse is the fact thatnosy neighbor Martha Huber (Estabrook) reeks more havoc with her littleblack book filled with devastating secrets of each family, untilsomeone becomes brave enough to stand up to her. However, they soonfind out that Martha Huber was only a red herring, and that things wereonly about to get worse. Things that make this show so interesting and so persistently fresh isits smart and edgy creator Marc Cherry, who keeps the plot sharper withmore twists and turns. The genre isn't SO specific; the show is more or less a comedy, somewhat of a drama, and mostly a mystery/thriller. I classify it asDark-Comedy/Drama/Mystery/Thriller. TV Rating by MPAA: TV-14 for Violence, Sexual Content, and somelanguage. My Rating: 15+. Desperate Housewives has some very adult themes, andsomewhat explicit depictions of domestic violence including a gruesomedeath of young girl, suicide, and murder. Though the sexual contentisn't too bad, the language used is at a PG level. The harsh dark storyline and the adult themes is the thing that should keep young viewersunder 10 supervised with an adult. Overall Grade: A-, brilliant story line, wonderful acting, andimpeccable plot twists will keep this show going for years to come. Running time-Approximently 1080 Min's. Color/Surround Stereo IncludesSpecial Features such as commentary and Deleted Scenes Release Date:September 20th, 2005 |

Compelling and totally watchableI first stumbled across this on an ad and I decided to watch it on it'sfirst air date. What I thought could have been a lame show like Sex andthe City or Lost I was wrong, the show seems to be a black comedy dramaand turns at some times to be brimming with some campiness andoccasionally gets a bit over the top. I admire this because it is anice show which doesn't patronize the viewer at times like mostAmerican television shows and it does get a little silly but that'swhat's the fun of it.Susan Meyer, Bree Van De Kamp, Lynette Scavo and Gabrielle Solis areall housewives with passions and desires. They are all different andunique from each other and they struggle with everyday life on WysteriaLane. All four of their stories/actions are done great in a hour andthere are some great character detail and emphasis. Hatcher is good butI'm not sure wherever or not she should be the lead, Huffman is verygood and makes good expression and emotion when living in an annoyingenvironment with her kids, job and life. Longoria is beautiful andlovely with nice frustration, lust and desires in her marriage. Crossis excellent and shows how a woman who wants to be the perfect and mostdistinguishable from the rest with repression of anger, confusion andsadness. The male leads are not as strong as the female mainly because obviouslyits to do with ladies and they are left in the cutting room butChavira, Savant and Metcalfe are pretty good too. Desperate Housewivesis a great show and I think it's probably one of the best Americanshows out now. |

Love it!This is the first new network series in a loooong time that I'veenjoyed. Certainly it is the only current series that I make everyeffort not to miss. No, it's not perfect, but the writing and acting ishead and shoulders above that of typical network television. It is niceto see a show that doesn't focus on 20-somethings, but mature women(although all of the actresses are certainly more attractive than mostpeople in their age group -- I guess we still have a ways to go beforetalent becomes more important than looks in television casting). AfterI saw the pilot, I recommended that my 69-year-old mother watch theshow, and she has become a huge fan, too. (Actually, the fact that it'ssuccess enrages rightwing fundamentalists makes me enjoy the programthat much more!) |

Just love it!Just love this show and everything about it. The actresses are all sobeautiful and characterful, the story lines are so imaginative andcompelling. The acting is superb (usually - you do get an occasionalduff actor but it's always someone who quickly disappears in the nextepisode or 2). Watching Desperate Housewives with a tub of SwedishGlace vegan ice cream is my idea of Heaven and my dearest wish is tohave a part on this show (any producers reading this please note mywebsite is www.evagray.com). I adore the way the characters of ListeriaLane are all so forgiving and no matter what stunt someone has playedor how badly they have behaved, they will always rally round and make afresh start. If only real life was like that! |

Desperate Single Male....with a fondness for this show!Being a fan of Desperate Housewives is a bit awkward for theheterosexual male that I am, but hey, don't we all have our guiltypleasures?I loved this show from the opening scene in which I saw Mary AliceYoung shoot herself after a hilarious monologue, and stayed a truedevotee ever since. I even endured the hideous second season in whichbrilliant scenes were pretty scarce. Lucky me! The third season evensurpassed the first one in almost any way imaginable. I loved the partof Kyle MacLachlan as creepy husband with a dirty secret. The trick behind this show is that it combines slapstick and razorsharp dialog with a plot that is serious enough to make you emotionallyattached to the characters. It's not pretentious, but it does have someintelligent scripts, so it's not your average soap opera. |

Great humor but also a mystery showI watched the Pilot of this show yesterday on Belgium TV and Iabsolutely loved it. Why? Because it's nothing like I've ever seenbefore and I think that's brilliant. It's an all in one show. A showwith drama, humor and also mystery is something that you don't see thatoften. After watching the pilot I was desperate to watch more and itpisses me of that I have to wait a week. (Yes, I know that's sad)I amso curious about what is going to happen next. Why did that woman killherself, what did she do that made someone (who?) blackmail her, why isher husband digging in the garden in the middle of the night, is thenew neighbour (the so-called plumber) a detective/ police-officer? Butnext to all the mysteries this show is just fun to watch. The humor isgreat. The woman that removes the name tag from the blender after shefound her neighbour death on the floor, Terri Hatchers' character whosets a fire in her slutty neighbours house, the blond woman who fishesher sons out of the pool, the woman with the bad marriage running homefrom a party and mowing the lawn in her evening dress and high heelsbecause she is afraid that her husband is going to fire the gardenerwhom she has an affair with, are just a few of the very funny momentsin this show.Great show, with great acting. I highly recommend it and I can't waitfor the next episode. |

Poor Man's American BeautyThis show is terrible! I would rather see the worst episode of Six FeetUnder than this piece of crap.It is no surprise with the clever promos that millions tuned in to seewhat it was about. It suckered me right in.However, in reality, these dated, stale, stereotypical characters holdnothing for me. At least in American Beauty, the characters wererelevant and contemporary. This was like one big long dizzying cartoonyspoof of an old fashioned TV commercical from the 60's or 70's. I mean, are we supposed to be shocked that hispanics can be wealthy andwomen can have affairs? And, that a well-off former corporate woman isovercome by her hyperactive kids?? Three words.. "GET A NANNY" Comeon!!! The dialogue and situations were completely contrived andunbelievable, like the perfect popsicle stick sculpture convenientlybeing there to clog a drain. The script was cleverly structured in a way that seemed disguised theshow's many flaws at it's core. How are these boring people goingventure off of this claustrophobic back lot street?I read somewhere else that the writer had created several other TVshows that failed or were quickly cancelled. This is no surprise, asthis pilot is based on a flashy, falsely promising premise thatultimately is hollow and unenlightened. It is simply uncontemporary atits root.I seem to be in the vast minority. But I for one, will not be tuningback in to see what (doesn't) happen. |

"Desperate Housewives" is a dramatic, hilarious and thrilling series"Desperate Housewives" is, and always will be my favourite televisionprogramme, and I'm a male, and not a male that likes males (get thatinto your head, please). And I found TV lacking something, for a long, long time, and so I took to watching Desperate Housewives from thebeginning on DVD on a Sunday afternoon, and within the first 10minutes, I was hooked, and have watched right up to the final seasonand I cannot believe it'll be ending. There are all different ranges of characters and story lines whichrarely repeat themselves, with each season having its own littlesparkle whether it's a new housewife, family or secret that is to beunveiled. Every episode ends on a note that makes you die till the nextone, and all the characters are so lovable, even if you despise them.Desperate Housewives is mind-blowing. It has brilliant story lines anddoesn't, as many stereotype, just revolve around women andrelationships, murder, lies and family secrets are involved too, and agood load of action, violence and of course, sex! I cannot believe it'sending. RIP Housewives, I salute you! |

HeartMonger (2012-03-20 02:34:01) |
My Final Thoughts: This show is done for. When "Desperate Housewives" first premiered in early fall of 2004, itwas a major and vast hit: It was the number one show of television forthe week, and audiences all over were enthralled and taken with thelikable characters and equally likable actors who portrayed them. Theshow then was able to make more appropriate ends meet; there weremagazine articles, and reviews hysteria, with each one of the'housewife' actresses getting the proper amount of attention andstardom. The ratings soared, and sky rocketed; the producers, andwriters were satisfied, the plot lines worked perfectly. Each housewifehad a storyline that lasted the entire season, only one really bigdesperation for each one, but one that was real and enough to soak upthe satire and make it last an entire season, while giving audiencessomething to think about. Each housewife represented you or someone youknew, male or female, and though juiced with satire, the show had agritty realism that was hard to shake off. When a housewife made adecision, shocking, or expected, it was with requited realism. andenough down to earth material, so that when a big moment occurred, itwas Big! And it kept audiences tuning in for more week after week. After twenty - two episodes of almost perfect, entertaining satire, andwit, the season finale aired, and gave Mary Alice Young, the show'sunseen narrator, a real purpose (not to mention a damn fine finalemonologue) and gave audiences a real cliffhanger, everyone was waitingto see what was next....Next came in the form of an episode called 'Next', as the season twoopener. Though starting with a not so witty, more of an expected onenote commentary by Mary Alice, who has no real value to the showanymore, and clumsy comedy that was inserted where it was not needed, the show still showed promise for an exciting season. But that is whereI was wrong. The show had lost all that had made it work. It lost thatfresh charm, the new realism, and likable wit and satire. Mary Alicespeaks in monologues that are irrelevant, and some do not seem to makesense when you think about it. The characters are not the strong womenthat they were, they are false, and totally bogus, not believable for asecond, except for a few good turns by Felicity Huffman, and MarciaCross, and a couple by Teri Hatcher, but as for the rest of them, theyall seemed to become more like caricatures instead of the characters wecame to love. They act out of line, like complete idiots who don't knowwhat to do with their lives, and the story lines became short lived, and some real good ones were never resolved, while others were farfetched and resolved in a short second, then dropped as if they neverhappened. Most of all, the biting satire, the women in power, and the'all is well that ends well as long as I said so' motifs are completelygone and forgotten.Alas, 'Desperate Housewives' has become just another nighttime soapopera. It always was, but as I said, it had a biting satire, comedictouch, that no one could really label. It was new, fresh, original, andin your face. No matter what you thought, you could not turn away fromit, and had to know more. Now, about 3/4 through the second season, Ihonestly dread to think how they are going to pull the show backtogether. The ratings are dropping ever so slightly, and there seems tobe more stupid plot development and bad episodes. The only thingdesperate about it now is that the characters are no longer desperate, and the audience seems to be flailing. It is typical dysfunction amongthe crowds and in a few seasons, two or three, at the most, the showwill disappear, and people will forget all about it, because there isnothing memorable about it anymore. This show went from a seemingly loud message begging to be heard, topure escapism, not a formula that suites it. I guess I can say I waswith a show of pop culture phenomena for awhile, but this just goes toshow that nothing good lasts forever. Oh well, as a review said aboutanother wasted opportunity of a show: There was almost a good showthere once. |

Everyone Knows EverythingWhen I first watched this, I first thought it was quite cheesy, but nowits my second favourite sitcom after Sex And The City. Its basically 4 desperate housewives, but was 5, but Mary Alice killedherself within 5 minutes of the first show and becomes the narrator. Itshows 4 typical women who are desperate to find happiness, even withinthemselves, it shows a nice neighbour hood, perfect nice houses withnice cut lawns, kinda a hint of Stepford wives, each different and lookfor something different but bottom line is happiness. As people walk inand out of the sitcom, everyone thinks these 4 friends are happy andcontent with themselves, but once they get inside their perfect houseswithin the perfect neighbour hood, things change, things shatter, andcracks appear. So much that friends turn upon friends and use each others heartbreaking pasts to get men and what they want. One gave her life up tobecome a mum when really her job was her life, another loves men somuch that she would trample on her own friend to get the one nightfling, the other lost her husband to his secretary, one is perfect, likes to eat at the table, makes fancy dinners, but the kids reallywant the odd beef burger, sausages and fries etc. One loves money somuch. This sitcom is unpredictable and funny, but it proves that you shouldnever judge a book by its cover, that things may seem OK on the outsidebut inside, is falling apart, and also, money cannot buy happiness, that you can have every car, and everything that you want, buteventually there's too much and makes you depressed and lonely, nothappy. |

Not That DesperateI don't know what's worse about Desperate Housewives: its contempt forwomen, its shrill sense of humor, the incessant tinkle of itsElfman-esquire score, or its lame attempts at making its Backlot,Hollywood aesthetic seem as if it exists in the real world. In onescene, Susan (Hatcher) opens the door to Mike (James Denton), windblowing in her face and through her hair. You can't help but laugh, notbecause the creators mean to evoke the tableaux of a harlequin romancecover, but because they dare to suggest that air actually circulatesthroughout Wisteria Lane. Do I care how long it's going to take forSusan to crack the mystery writhing inside Betty's basement? Notreally. I'm just concerned that next season's hook is going to revolvearound an Asian family, a litter of puppies, and a box of Koreanbarbecue. Accused of hawking a lurid form of conservatism, you get asense Marc Cherry and his cohorts intend to say something profoundabout suburbia with their outmoded view of womanhood and the placesthey call home. What that message is I'm not exactly sure, and anyonewho tells you otherwise simply doesn't know sh*t. |

Desperate for more! The show 'Desperate Housewives' is the best show on television since'Leave it to Beaver'. I know that long! But I mean the show just givesme (personally) the "exciting" feeling. I can't wait for 1.)Sundaynights at 9:00 2.)The ending montage 3.)the DVD to be released 4.)Lesssex, more drama. These are the things I expect of during the season.Sometimes I do get emotional during the scenes. Because it makes mefeel upset if someone dies I don't care who it is. The reason why Irate this show '10 out of 10' is because of the drama that fills theshow. I show in season five will be fast forwarding five years fromnow. Susan is married to a new guy (not mike, and not Nathan Fillion).I love this show, I am probably the only male teenager in the worldthat likes this show! But hey what can I say it's a soap. I love soaps! For now this Matt Dugan! DUGAN OUT! |

Best show on Television...Thank you...Thank you...Thank you "ABC" for putting such an amazingshow on television. I am a television addict and watch and judge everycomedy and drama show that was and is currently still on the air."Desperate Housewives" is far one of the best shows I have seen in avery long time. The comedy, drama, mystery that is put into this showis just brilliant. I have been waiting many many years for a network toput such great and creative writing back on television. I watched theshow with a huge group of 25 family and friends and each and everyoneloved the show. We sat and talked about it for hours after it was overand continued the next day at work. I am looking forward to what willhappen next week and I am sure it will continue to get even moreamazing each week as it goes along. Again....Thank you Thank you Thankyou!!! |

This is satire?I, too, was lured in to by the promos for this show -- I love a dead-onsatire or sardonic view of so-called every day life. "Six Feet Under",for example. I also love a hip comedy that looks at modern adults andtheir sex lives with humor, intelligence and heart -- like "Sex and theCity." SIGH. Thanks a lot, HBO, you have ruined me for network TV.The success of Desperate Housewives is disturbing on a number oflevels. The first point that must be made to Marc Cherry is -- THIS ISNOT SATIRE! Satire requires irony, and there is nothing ironic aboutthis show. Most of the time, the show glamorizes laziness, materialism, deceitfulness, lawlessness, shallow-self centeredness and cruelty. An excellent example of this is the episode where the one housewifefound the joys of speed through stealing her kids Ritalin tablets --and she then goes on a rampage all over the neighborhood raiding herneighbors medicine cabinets and stealing THEIR kids Ritalin! Now, mycomplaint is not that they portrayed the issue itself -- in fact I'msure this happens all the time and is an issue which deserves to bediscussed and/or portrayed in the media -- but the problem is, MarcCherry portrayed it as A JOKE!!!!!!!!!!!! I hate to break it to you,Mr. Cherry, but stealing DEA-controlled drugs from your children andyour neighbors is a felony, which could land you in jail and renderyour children permanently under the care of the Department ofChildren's Services! And I could go on and on. Marc Cherry and his ilkneed to go watch hundreds of episodes of Sex and the City and Six FeetUnder, and sleep with American Beauty playing in the background. Andthen he needs to go back to school and actually get a degree inliterature and creative writing. But the worst thing is -- American women in particular seem to beeating this up. It makes me sad. |
