If this were a movie about characters rather than overcooked situations and desperate slapstick -- and a lot shorter -- we might have had something.

Seriously Painful to watch

This was one of those movies you got to the end and thought, how in thehell did I manage to make it through this movie without turning it off.At one point about mid-way through this movie, I almost turned it off, about 6 times, but kept thinking, it can't be this bad. Well itimproved enough to finish watching the movie, but that was it. It wasawkward and uncomfortable. The only entertaining part was the brainpower over mind power struggle, about 5 minutes of the movie, simplybecause you felt driven to see Barry win, other than that, a completewaste of time. You could get much more satisfaction from watching paintpeel from the wall than to watch this movie. If I could, I would ratethis movie below 1, because I just lost 114 minutes of my life I can'tget back.

For comedy, better than the original.

Dinner for schmucks is not the clever but nasty French version, it isan American comedy with reasonable comedy value without the really meancharacter of the original film. I watched this film expecting to hateit. The two main actors in my view are middle of the road to less thanfunny in every film I have seen them in. In this film Steve Carell isthe funniest I have ever seen him. He manages to pull of the comedythat the French film does not. The dialog is clever and the supportcast are effective, all playing their part. I laughed a lot, wastouched by certain scenes and overall it was a good watch. If you are afilm lover who dislikes nastiness in films, and dislikes coming awaywith that unhappy feeling in your gut, then its possible you willactually like this version of the original. Worth your time.

Eat a finger

This review is from: Dinner for Schmucks (Amazon Instant Video) This movie is cute. I would watch it again on a cold rainning night when i have a cold and my nose is so stuffed up that nothing will come out, not from the indigestion, but from the inflamation due to a sinus infection! Funny stuff. I love that part when he gave him the artists phone number.... 111-1111 lol... And the word "WET" comes to my mind, refuring to one part in the movie... funny stufff... the stuffing of a turkey but with out thanksgiving............

Be careful with the popcorn. Dinner for Schmucks is laugh-out-loud genius. Take the comment literally. You will laugh-out-loud. Lots.

This movie WAS funny! Forget the haters and open your heart to DFS!

I can't believe all the bad-hype written about this movie! First of all, I'm not a fan of Steve Carrell, so I went to see thismovie with some hesitation, but boy! I was already laughing before eventhe opening titles finished rolling! True: this movie is not for everyone, specially if you have to/like toover analyze ALL movies.... this one is not one to do that to. All Ican say, without spoiling this moving for anyone, is that you WILLcringe at times. And yes, you WILL scratch your head and wonder howsomeone (Carrell's character) can be that naive or innocent (I actuallynever saw him as stupid or an idiot). The truth of the matter is that, indeed, there are well- intentioned people out there who are so genuineand gullible and nice, that for the normal-sarcastic personality-types,great people like this are an insult to their intellect. And for what Ican tell from other people's reviews in here, they find them and theirpredicaments offensive and boring. At the end, there are great andFUNNY lessons to be found in this film if one allows it! The only thing I will agree with other people's reviews in here is thattowards the middle of the movie things do-drag abit, but that's becausefrom the start of the movie to this point, every possible thing thatcould go wrong to Paul Rudd's character GOES WRONG because of Carrell, which is hard to watch even though is all-funny. BUT, through some veryunexpected turn of events that we learn through the length of themovie, by the time the actual dinner takes place, the movie just rollslike a non-stopping laugh-outloud ride that will have you grasping forair while taking all the 'exceptional' action going on in the screen! While I'm still not a huge fan of Carrell, he did-do a fantastic job atplaying 'Barry' in a very respectable-funny way for this movie. Ruddand everyone else of the cast (and I mean really EVERYONE), also do afantastic job at their roles. My special mention goes to Jeremain fromFOTC for almost stealing this movie! At the end of the movie, I would say that 50% of the public were nothappy with it and tried to leave the theater as soon as the lights wenton, while the other 50% (me included), were trying to clear the tearsin their eyes from laughing so much (wait after the closings titlesstart rolling because there's more!)Anyhow..... open your heart at 'Dinner for Smucks'! It really is afunny-fantastic film if you check your sarcastic, self-righteous ego atthe door!

An honest review

When I first saw the trailer, I thought it looked decent, it had Rudd and Carrell, two of my favorite actors. Throughout the movie I tried really hard to love it. But it's hard. But Carrell steals the show, and the movie itself, while predicable, has some hilarious parts, and Zach Grafikalisia (you try and spell that) is hilarious in his two scenes. I guess see it if you're a fan of the actors, otherwise rent it

Though the premise of Dinner for Schmucks is deeply cruel, we are supposed to laugh, because we trust that by the closing credits the characters will have matured into upstanding men.

The plot rises or falls on our laughing in recognition that we too are capable of the perverse and unkind. Instead, 10 minutes in, we just feel dead.

Excellent Movie, Really Funny!

Funny at Times! Faithful to the Original French Version to some degree!

Steve Carell really shows his comedic range in this film. You can'thelp but like Barry, the IRS taxidermist, who was hit by Tim's car ashe was collecting a dead mouse off the street in Los Angeles. Tim isplayed brilliantly by Paul Rudd. Tim is a businessman who wants to getpromoted and hopefully engaged to Julie, his live-in girlfriend who isan art museum curator. At the moment, she is representing KieranVollard who has some pretty weird taste in his artistic endeavors.Anyway, Tim meets Barry and his life changes for the worse or thebetter depending upon how you look at it. Both men have more in commonthan they realize. Barry's wife leaves him for his boss, Thurman, whobecomes a guest at the infamous dinner for idiots. While Barry thinksthe other guests are remarkable, Tim knows the real reason that they'reall there. I like this film and I think the director didn't go too farinto the ridiculous as he could have done. In fact, the film has a lotless vulgarity in language and even sexual relations although there issome sexuality especially with Kieran. I expected sick jokes at timesbut I found the humor to be mild and tame and they told the story of anunusual friendship. The original French version ended differently but Iwanted Tim to make the same revelation that he's the biggest idiot andmaybe we all are. It's funny how two different people like Tim andBarry can become friends who did need each other and learned from eachother.

Inspired from a Indian movie

Did anybody know that this has been adapted from a Indian movie called"Bheja Fry" The similarities are uncanny . the sequence, the plot evensome of the small details. It is a good adaptation though, but i have not been able to locate anycredits which needs to be given to the Indian movie. This is the first time have seen such a adaptation of an Indian moviein a Hollywood movie. where the Indian version is better than theHollywood version.I must say that Carell's character in the Indianversion was way more funnier that the Hollywood version.Hope we get to better adaption and some credit to the originalcreators. which is missing here.

The same overall effect... could be achieved by intercutting Three Stooges shorts with YouTube videos of adorable kittens rolling around with baby bunnies...

An uproarious odd-couple remake of Francis Veber's hit French farce The Dinner Game.

If the dinner is mean-spirited, the movie really isn't. The tone is more sweet than savage, and the "schmucks" are actually treated with some respect.

Complete disaster

I was hopeful that a new Steve Carell movie was out and when I startedto watch this thing I just kept getting more and more angry andfrustrated with the characters. It reminded me of the Cable Guy withJim Carey, and I remember how annoyed i got watching that movie, when aperson gets so annoying its painful just to watch them. Thats the waythis movie was.. it started off OK but when Carell comes into thepicture it just went down hill super fast. I walked out and haven'tdone that in ages.. I have a high tolerance for crappy movies.. willsometimes sit thru them for the achievement of sitting thru them, butnot this one. Come on Steve Despicable Me was great why put this crapout there? Avoid this movie unless you need something to get you reallyangry and annoyed, just my 2cents

As the film hits the one-hour mark, it dawns on you this is not coming together as a cohesive comic experience.

Avoid at all costs

This movie title is an abomination of any decency and demonstrates thedepths to which filmmakers have descended. No one should pay a pennylest the writers, producers and all who were associated with thisdreadful venture gain even one cent in profit. Did they have no adultsupervision? They think saying a cuss word is amusing? Will they make asequel "Movies made by idiots for idiots!" Please send them back tokindergarten, maybe even to a strict Catholic school where nuns willrap them on the knuckles with a ruler for misbehaviour and they willnot dare use bad words. In days gone by, there were great comedians and never a vulgar word -Jack Benny, George Burns, Red Skelton, and so many other fineentertainers. To-day's writers need lessons.
