Boring and a waste of time!!!!!!This has to be the most boring movie I have ever seen. Well, I didn't actually see the whole thing, I stopped it about half way through as I couldn't stand to sit and waste anymore time watching it. I think I would rather go to the dentist than to sit and watch this movie. |

Let the cynics scoff - this is a movie that's beautiful to look at that will leave you with some food for thought, as well. |

Despite its flaws, an intelligent, beautiful-looking film about the power of one person to radically change the life of another is an unexpected treat in a season of mindless entertainment. |

El mayor problema es el subrayado permanente de lo que suele llamarse "mensaje", eso que supuestamente el espectador debe descubrir en el transcurso de una pelÃcula y llevarse al final para su casa y que aquà está servido como receta. |

This. Movie. Sucks.Never read the book and thanks to this well-produced wretched filmnever will. The IMDb synopsis is inaccurate... you get no sense thisbroad is trying to have a kid or that her marriage has been failing. She one day decides she doesn't want it anymore and, props to theacting of Crudup, the husband has no reason to know why. Her subsequentlover is left with the same "huh?" moment. It's as if she needs topunish anyone who treats her well.Only good looking men fall in love with Liz, and everyone admires her.She dumps her lovers and husband and the only friend that will tell herwhat she needs to hear, in the belief that "balance" lies so faroutside herself that she has to travel the world (on a very tightschedule) to seek enlightenment. How she pays for it is never hintedat. And to have this bone-thin creature lecture another bone-thincreature on the need to "just enjoy eating, we can always buy a biggerpair of jeans" is insulting AND laughable. That the scene is followedby two bone-thin actresses faking attempts to "squeeze into" jeans isjust insulting. And the punch line? The woman who has wasted 2.5 hours of your lifewhining that everyone around her says she needs a man finally finds"balance"... by finding a man. And FYI EVERY man in this film issensitive and caring. I have to say that the direction and very goodsupportive acting presents an effective image of all sorts of energeticlife going on around Liz (and inviting her to be part of it) while shesits whining to herself in voice-over. But the unreality of EVERYONELOVING HER is just a bit lame.Fiction? Not much.Oh, and why did I spend money to see this? A friend convinced me itwould be great, and she is such a good friend and enjoyed it so much Iwill never tell her exactly how much I despised it. See? For people youcare about sometimes you hold yourself back.FYI Richard Jenkins is the only person Julia Roberts' Liz reallyconnects to... and even that is ruined by a last-minute "Hollywood"moment. No spoiler here, you'll see it lumbering toward you like anelephant in the desert. |

An uncomfortable and disturbing romantic dramaI wont say I enjoyed this movie but I cant say I didn't enjoy it eitherfor the simple fact that it leaves me a whole load of things tocriticise about the movie and about the Julia Roberts character,Elizabeth. What a sad misplaced woman Elizabeth was in this movie andfifibelle in earlier comments summed up many things which come to mymind as accurate. Here we have a story of a 30something woman who does seem to haveeverything but then embarks on a life to Italy India and Indonesia insearch of herself, god knows why! A selfish self-centred, arrogant, hard to love woman from whom most people would run a mile from, make nomistake.I felt sorry for her husband Stephen who loved her dearly. Yes, he gotthe marriage settlement and she got nothing (or did she?) If that wasso, how did she finance her around the world trip to the threecountries. And why did she hit on Italy India and Indonesia (Bali)especially? Felt sorry for the 'middle man' David who just failed to'ask her to stay' and she walked out on him without a moments thought.then there was the friendly Texan with the beard in India and finallythe Javier Bardem character who again didn't really deserve thetreatment he got. I was rather hoping he would not return to her but..... I will stop there on that point. Her love affair with Ketut and connection with Ketut was bizarre in theextreme and on her birthday she somehow raise $18,000 and provide thatmoney to Ketut and his family for a new home a complete insult to Ketutand Balinese/Indonesian culture collectively to suggest that allAmericans go around willy-nilly and can just dip their hands in theirpockets. There is no sense of reality to this aspect and it should beremoved from the movie completely.Elizabeth also makes a mockery of religious transformation, as ifreligion changes them as a person and not just spiritually. it seems somany woman across the cultures go through this 'need' to findthemselves after courting a man who loves them and then just abandoninghim because they are just too selfish to understand love.the movie is uncomfortable and disturbing because I am personallyuncomfortable and disturbed that most women in the world behave likethis. It's a dangerous precedent for long term relationships not to belong term.Usually I am critical of movie titles and find that the movie title isnot appropriate to the subject of the film. Bizarre as it may sound, the film is not appropriate to the title of the film. She eats a lot,she prays a lot, she loves a lot - but leave it out Julia Roberts, thisElizabeth lass is not worthy of your acting talents.Another film to recently compare this with is 'letters to Juliet' wherethe mature lady (forget her name) goes on a jaunt through Italy (ironicor not?) to find a long lost Italian lover but that film is infinitelymore enjoyable.Eat Pray Love is enjoyable for the male acting in particular, JavierBardem is a joy per se and some of the scenery in Italy India andIndonesia is just great. The film had great potential but it is overalla real let down and this is yet another example of a Director/producer- not sure who - of trying to over-exploit.Never mind, shall move onto the next movie |

The film, which admittedly stumbles in the home stretch and just misses out on something like greatness, is nonetheless a visual and metaphysical delight. Come hungry, come searching, come lonely. |

Eat, Pray, Love This DVD!This review is from: Eat Pray Love (DVD) The book was great, and this film does a good job of capturing the essence of the interior life of Elizabeth Gilbert. I agree with a friend of mine, Julia Roberts is an excellent actress, however someone less famous would probably have been more appropriate for this role. Kyra Sedgwick would have been my choice. She has the same quirky edge that Gilbert has. All in all the film is good. Director Ryan Murphy is pure joy in what he does with GLEE, but I would have liked perhaps a European director and crew to have made this film or Ryan Murphy could have utilized textures from European films, shadows, solitude, and angst. For some reason the film doesn't quite do that, but all in all I would recommend it. Love Javier Bardem. |

VapidWow. I've always admired Julia Roberts, and was wondering how she wouldtransition to a more mature actress. Not well. Why in the world wouldshe have read this abomination of a script, and said, "Yes, I want todo that movie!"? And the other fine actors must have agreed becauseRoberts signed on. All the talent in this film can't correct theatrocious script. The film has four chapters, each of which introducesa new male character in a different part of the world, and charts herdysfunctional response to each. It's impossible, I suspect, to havedeveloped each character and story all in a two hour movie. It was sohollow, not only did I feel nothing for the characters (except Bardem),but I felt ambivalence toward them. Lots of narcissistic angst overnothing. The movie had nothing to say.I want my money back. More important, I want my two hours back. |

Lovely, Inspirational, Remind-ful...I am sad to see such negative "catty" reviews posted. It seems that most reviewers just don't "get it" and thus were not truly open to the message of the film. Yes, Liz is successful, beautiful, seems to have everything, made her choices...as we all have and do. I do not know what to say to convey the frustration I feel with a society who largely fails to see humanity and truth over the superficial and greed. This film is a HUGE message to all of us who are crabby (and as a result claim to call a judgement, "review"), unsatisfied, confused, lost, frustrated, who continue to do the same things and expect different results...etc, etc, etc. Liz Gilbert's experience is a shared and universal one regardless of one's background or current worldly status. The film if you pay attention to the woman instead of the things around her, is inspirational in many ways. I am not rich in material goods, I've never had the privilege of owning a home in this country, and currently I do not have my health, but I know what it's like to work like crazy for empty and meaningless dreams to discover something more...search for growth. I applaud Liz's courage, abandonment of all she knew...step by step...to travel another road less traveled only to discover she was the love she was looking for all along. If only we all had such courage and optimism and fortitude, we'd be a much more kinder and compassionate society and world. |

Eat Pray Love (Quick Review) - 1 Star"Eat Pray Love" invites us to follow a narcissistic, self-absorbedwoman pleasure herself for nearly two and a half hours in threedifferent countries. The movie's first thirty minutes is composed ofLiz Gilbert (Julia Roberts) complaining about the current state of herlife; that's a lot of minutes, considering there isn't much of her lifeworth complaining about. So, she breaks up with her husband who lovesher, starts an affair with an actor (who loves her), abandons him too,and flies to Italy to eat pasta.Along the way, she meets lots of people. Funny how almost everyone inthe movie is very much likable, except her. And it is infuriating towatch her abandon and/or exploit some of these people to fulfill herown selfish ambition. "Eat Pray Love", a movie about a woman named LizGilbert, is based on a novel of the same title. It is autobiographical, written by Liz Gilbert and about Liz Gilbert. It may come as a bit of a shock to some that the most interesting turns in the woman-on-a-quest sojourn don't belong to Roberts, luminous though she is. Those are owned by a number of misty-eyed if masculine menfolk. |

Like any beloved book with a pretty film version, there will be fans of this film, in spite of its flaws. And bless them. I was, mostly, frustrated. |

A film to rememberHaving had enough of reading mindless negative critiques of thisremarkable film, I feel it is time someone put the record straight. Weknow Julia Roberts well enough to know that she would not associateherself with a bad film, she looked stunning, all those close ups meantthere was nowhere to hide, and her own character shone through. Thephotography was brilliant, the attention to detail, the atmospheres ofItaly, India and Bali were all brought to life. I had read the book, but I enjoyed the film even more. Anyone who has been unhappy in amarriage and has wished they had the courage to leave it with honesty, knowing it is the right thing for both parties, will relate to thisfilm. In this case there was a satisfyingly good ending, not always soin real life, but I am sure this film will encourage other women to bebraver and believe that they can find love again, and if not, at leastthey will know they do not need a man to find happiness. The two hourswere well spent, I did not notice the time pass, take no notice of thesad critics who really missed the beauty of it all. |

If You Like Julia Roberts, Watch It, Otherwise, Just Read The BookUnfortunately, I think this movie watered down some of the themes of the book, and the character of Elizabeth Gilbert, to the point where it lost its depth. Part of what makes Elizabeth Gilbert likable in the book (and in my opinion she is likable, although I know some people don't feel that way) is that she is a keen observer and social commentator, in addition to being funny. Her sharpness, particularly her ironic insights, and her humor were entirely lost in this movie, leaving the character kind of insipid.Themes were watered down too. In the book, Elizabeth Gilbert's uncertainty about wanting kids, and the resentment she feels at social and familial pressure to do so, is more of a driver in the dissolution of her marriage than it is here. Perhaps the writers/producers felt that a mainstream audience couldn't handle questioning of social convention on that scale. As another example, in the book when Elizabeth collects money from her Western friends to help her Balinese friend Wayan purchase a house, the resulting problems spur an interesting analysis of cultural differences, and the problems inherent in trying to help someone from another social world. In the movie it's watered down to a feel-good success story (as is Elizabeth's romance there, while in the book it is considerably more complicated.) The India spiritual scenes are pretty watered down too - her insights are more self-helpy than spiritual. All that being said, I enjoyed watching Julia Roberts most of the time, and most of the supporting cast was very strong, especially Richard Jenkins and Javier Bardem. The shots of Italy, India and Bali were all lovely. So set your expectations accordingly, especially if you've read the book, and you can enjoy what there is to enjoy in this movie. If you want the true insights of the book though, just read it. |

Maybe I would Have Liked It MoreHad I read the book. Found it to be pretentious, way too long, thin on a real plot, and boring. Should have been edited down to the Thanksgiving scene in Italy, the wedding scene in India (and the elephant scene), and everything in Bali.Too wordy and chick flicky. I love Ms. Roberts, but this was just not an interesting enough film to spend nearly 3 hours on. |

Ear Pray LoveThis review is from: Eat Pray Love (DVD) Love all of Julia Roberts movies but this one was on the bottom of my list. It was just too all over the place. Wasn't sure if she should eat more pray more or fall in love more. Not one of her better movies. |

While it touches the main plot points of Elizabeth Gilbert's bestselling novel like stepping stones, it is left to Julia Roberts' bewitching smile and Javier Bardem's sensuality to convince us that Liz's journey of self discovery is one we want to take |
