Twodude Review (2012-04-27 09:12:05) |
Wishing it moved a little FasterGeorge Tillman Jr., whose previous directorial efforts include Men ofHonor and Notorious, has constructed a serious and violent drama in hismost recent film Faster. Dwayne Johnson, who stars as the terriblynamed Driver, provides a somber and brutal performance. Driver, recently released from a 10 year prison sentence, is motivated byrevenge against the individuals whom murdered his brother. Johnson'sability to wear Driver's scars, literally and figuratively, propels thecharacter into more than just a soulless murderer. Billy Bob Thornton,so-so as the drug addicted Detective named The Cop (yes, that's whathe's named), . It's not a memorable performance, but serviceable.Oliver Jackson-Cohen is very good as The Killer, an intense contractkiller who takes pride in what he does and his job very, VERYseriously. However, I don't think his character added anything to themovie and was more of a wasted plot line. The rest of cast is made ofCarla Gugino as Detective Cicero; Maggie Grace as Lily, anothercharacter that seemed rather useless; and Moon Bloodgood, lookingrather haggard as Marina.Having previously appeared in family films like The Tooth Fairy and TheGame Plan, and action flicks like The Rundown and Walking Tall, Fasterwas a chance for Johnson to widen his appeal. Although it's not quitethe action film, there are a few intense moments. It's those momentsthat I would have rather seen the film build upon. Hollywood hasn't hadmany action heroes since the early 1990s; however Johnson, along withJason Statham, seems positioned to take over the action hero roll.Faster should have been a golden opportunity to cash in on that roll,as well as Dwayne Johnson's likability. Instead it went the moredramatic approach, providing Johnson with very little dialog. Themajority of Johnson's screen time was used on showing his hatred, angstand pain in his facial expressions. I realize that there is a large fanbase that finds Dwayne Johnson attractive, but to limit his voice is todo him a disservice. Johnson is extremely talented, and when he's ableto deliver lines he does so convincingly. I followed Johnson, as theRock, for many years in the WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) thereweren't many before or after him that could fire up the crowd using themicrophone.Faster wasn't terrible, but it wasn't great either; it falls in themiddle. I believe if you are going to use a title like Faster, then themovie should be filled with action. Instead we're given plot lines thatended up going nowhere. In the end we're given useless filler, and poorpacing; leaving a need for the movie to move FASTER.Grade: movie – C (Dwayne Johnson gets a B) Age appropriate: 18+ (violence, mild profanity, drug use) Visit our site at www.twodudereview.com |

Awesome movieThis review is from: Faster [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray) The Rock plays an ex-con who seeks revenge on his brothers killers. This movie will blow your head off from the first few minutes of watching. A surprisingly awesome performance from the Rock, definitely not your typical performance from the guy. |

nothing that special until to the endDwayne "The rock" Johnson stars in "faster" A movie about a fresh outof prison man bent on killing the people related his brothersmurder.Throughout the film you could tell what would happen next, because there are so many elements this movie has borrowed from otherfilms.Though this film had good action sequences, and a decentsoundtrack, there was not that much character development to get all ofyour heart with the story. The protagonist, who we as the audience, should know the most about, is a perfect example of this. There is areally good part of the movie towards the end(you will know it when yousee it).In the end this is a great movie to RENT, especially for fansof "the rock" |

Brutal film, solid BDI for one am happy The Rock has returned to what he does best - and with a role that is the darkest I have ever seen him go. Sony preserved this revenge flick on a nice BD that captures how this film is meant to be seen. Plot description is as simple as the headings given to us with each character introduction: no names, just titles. A driver who bleeds his way through a revenge fest whilst being chased by a neurotic assassin and a washed up cop. The picture quality has various fluctuations but that is how it was filmed. Several cameras use the yellow tint heavily, others show a deliberate grain. The flashy filming and action edit cuts can upset some viewers, but the overall quality makes this a great presentation. The DTS was mixed excellently throughout the film, whether it is the nice music score/soundtrack, or Rock throttling that beautiful car or that Ruger going off like the canon it is. The special features are a mixed bag:* Alternate ending, 12:35 minutes. Optional director introduction. A much more action-packed head-to-head ending that carried with it some major flaws, but worth the watch. Once they cut this out that led to all of the following scenes being cut...* Deleted scenes, 10:43 minutes. All revolving around the change in how they present the ending and final twist(s). Moon Bloodgood got the shaft on this as these scenes were mostly hers, some of her grittiest acting to date. Director introduction to each is optional, with the menu manipulation making it somewhat amateurish in how they put it together (having to go backwards after each selection to actually see the scenes).* Criminals/Cops, 12:05 minutes. Talking heads and clip heavy, only one or two decent insights.* Guns, stunts, cars, 11:21 minutes. VERY worthy since it hits my three favorite topics in a film like this. * Animatics, 12:15 minutes. Skip it. Is a storyboard mix of scenes, uninteresting.* Movie IQ, the usual feature length trivia.Region coded A/B/C with English and Spanish subs only. If you are wondering where the big action scenes from the trailer and some of the cover art scenes went to - then you have to watch the alternate ending (as I was waiting for the big head-on scene the whole movie and never got it). Lots of complaining out there about this film and all the sub-plot character depth, but I enjoyed it and got past the leaps of disbelief in how some things go down, hope you enjoy a great Blu. |

A below average revenge action thriller drama that could hav been gr8.After 10 years in prison, Driver (Dwayne Johnson) has a singular focus- to avenge the murder of his brother during the botched bank robberythat led to his imprisonment. Now a free man with a deadly to-do listin hand, he's finally on his mission...but with two men on his trail -a veteran cop (Billy Bob Thornton) just days from retirement, and ayoung egocentric hit-man (Oliver Jackson-Cohen) with a flair for theart of killing and a newfound worthy opponent. The hunter is also thehunted. It's a do or die race to the list's finish as the mysterysurrounding his brother's murder deepens, and new details emerge alongthe way hinting that Driver's list may be incomplete.i am so glad to see Dwayne Johnson out of those Disney movies into thekind of movie he looks good in. he is perfect for these kind of roles.bad ass, kick ass, huge muscles awesome. but as always this movie onthe whole was not that good, again. this movie could have been a verygreat revenge action thriller drama, it was on that track, it was thatkind of a movie but things didn't worked out that well for this movie.it was trying to be that kind of a movie, a movie to remember but justdoesn't work that well. but still an average movie, OK to watch.some scenes in this movie are seriously superb, not that there is manyaction scenes but how they have been done the few action scenes thatare there, seeing the past of the character of Dwayne while he is outsearching the people who were involve in his brother killing andactually killing them in really dramatic way with good background scorereally looks good but otherwise the movie is not that good. thats badas i said that it could have been a revenge thriller to remember.Dwayne Johnson looks really good in his character but somehow he seemslost, i don't think he was ready to play this character, somehow it wasmore The Rock then Dwayne Johnson himself. he is good in action scenesbut not a good actor. Billy Bob Thornton was OK in his role not goodthough. but nice to see him. that English guy was good Oliver JacksonCohen, looks really hot and charming and played his character good.other actors were decnt like Carla, Moon, Maggie, Adewale and Tom.script and screenplay was very very weak, why is it always i mean itreally irritates me so Damn much. an OK revenge action thriller with adramatic look and plot that could have been a great movie but as usualfails to be so. if you are a Dwayne Johnson fan than i don't need to say anything youwill watch it but if you are not, then i must say to skip this movie. |

Good, simple actionThis is a good simple fast paced action movie, Dwayne "the Rock" Johnson does a good job of not talking much, what follows is decent revenge movie with car chases and shoot outs. This is the kind of movie to put the DVD player one evening eat some popcorn and pass the time. Not great, but pretty good. |

Blu-ray: Violent, gritty and high on adrenaline...a solid popcorn action flick! In 2011, Dwayne Johnson ("The Scorpion King", "The Other Guys", "Race to Witch Mountain") made his action film comeback with "Faster" directed by George Tillman Jr. ("Barbershop" films) and written by Tony and Joe Gayton ("Bulletproof", "Uncommon Valor", "Sweet Jane").Starring alongside Johnson are Billy Bob Thornton ("Sling Blade", "Armageddon", "Monster's Ball"), Carla Gugino ("Watchmen", "Sin City", "Night at the Museum"), Moon Bloodgood ("Terminator Salvation", "Eight Below", "Pathfinder"), Oliver Jackson-Cohen ("Going the Distance"), Maggie Grace ("Lost", "Taken", "Knight and Day"), Tom Berenger ("Platoon", "Inception", "Training Day"), Jennifer Carpenter ("Dexter", "Quarantine") and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje ("Lost", "G.I. Joe", "The Bourne Identity").VIDEO:"Faster" is presented in 1080p High Definition (2:40:1). The film looks absolutely gorgeous in HD! Plenty of details can be seen throughout this film, from the detail and textures of the skin pores of every character during closeups, facial hair on the guys, detail on the guns, detail on surroundings, what you would expect from a recent film, "Faster" looks awesome! There is detail from the sweat and blood all over Driver, the detail of the firearms, the vehicles, you name it, the detail is what comes through in this Blu-ray release.Outdoor scenes are colorful and vibrant, blacks are nice and deep, I saw no signs of any dust particles, artifacting, banding, DNR, edge enhancement or aliasing whatsoever.AUDIO & SUBTITLES:"Faster" is presented in English 5.1 DTS-HD MA and the lossless soundtrack is also awesome! Driver's luger packs a punch and when he and Killer are exchanging fire, audio was well utilized through the surround channels and definitely bringing an immersive soundtrack to the viewer. And this happens quite a bit throughout the film as there is quite a bit of gunfire, cars speeding up and burning rubber and hearing the tires shriek, automobile crashes and hearing the metal crunching, bullets ricocheting off metal.Overall, a pretty good use of surround and LFE. Granted, it's not as active as "Quantum of Solace" but it's still features a solid lossless soundtrack and fans of this film should enjoy hearing it in lossless.Subtitles are presented in English, English SDH and Spanish.SPECIAL FEATURES:"Faster" comes with the following special features (presented in high definition, English stereo and optional English subtitles): * * * PS3 Theme - If you have a PS3 theme, you can get a grayish theme with Dwayne Johnson holding his gun. * movieIQ®+sync - If you're Blu-ray is connected to the Internet, you can pull up info. on the film realtime. * Alternate Ending with Director's Introduction - (12:42) The original ending to "Faster" that didn't do well during the test screening. Some may like this ending more than the final cut, I did like it...but I enjoyed the final cut ending more. There is a different outcome to the ending of the film. Featuring an optional introduction by director George Tillman Jr. * Deleted Scenes with Director's Introductions - (7:54) Featuring five deleted scenes with optional introductions by director George Tillman Jr. * Criminals & Cops: The Cast of Faster - (12:12) Featuring an interview with director George Tillman Jr. and the cast of "Faster". * Weapons and Wheels: The Guns, Cars and Stunts of Faster - (11:54) A featurette featuring the weapons, cars and stunts used on "Faster". * Animatics - (12:22) Featuring the storyboard and pre-rendered CG storyboards for the bank heist, old man, hospital and joust scenes.JUDGMENT CALL:The Rock has come back to action films! And after trying different genres, there is no doubt that Dwayne Johnson doing action films fits perfectly for him. You want to see Johnson in films where he is kicking butt and "Walking Tall" was a perfect example of where Johnson shines as an action film star. It's what many people have seen him do as "The Rock" on WWE and so, his return to action films in "Faster" was expected and if there is one thing that can be positively said about this film is that the Brahma Bull brings it!But unlike his previous films, Johnson's character "Driver" is not a good guy. He's a criminal, he's a murderer and while you are sympathetic for his cause, I feel that the character is one that will easily turn people off and those who will want to see Dwayne Johnson do what he does best, playing a character who wants to kick some ass!For the most part, this action film is an entertaining popcorn action flick that is quite watchable, adrenal and enjoyable but if you try to extract what is deep about satisfying about the movie, that is where "Faster" comes up short. One major positive about the film is its cast. You have an all-star cast and while most of them don't show up for all that long, the storyline's focus on four different characters is quite interesting. Outside of Johnson's "Driver", Billy Bob Thornton can always pull off the Cop-like character. Granted, he's not a likable cop, as his first initial shot shows him to be a drug addict, but Billy Bob knows how to play these type of character roles. Carla Gugino as Detective Cicero was not well utilized in my opinion and possibly the characters that you do find pretty cool and feel they should have their own movie is Oliver Jackson-Cohen's "Killer" and Maggie Grace's "Lily".And that for me lies the problem. We enjoy the characters too much.In some ways, I felt we shouldn't. Sympathetic, I understand but the Driver was fine, playing the man carrying out his revenge. The Killer should have been some deranged, psycho lunatic. The Cop could stay the way he was and for Cicero, a more definitive position of a woman in power, rather one who feels she is getting shortchanged by the Cop.Sure, the concept would fit into the banality of revenge action films but it works. Instead, we are left with plot holes that make no sense. Why was the ordeal videotaped? Why do the police have that videotape? Also, I do believe that there is one crucial deleted scene that should have been included in the film and it deals with the Cop and the character of Marina. I know that George Tillman Jr. didn't want to cut it but he did and I felt it was a mistake. I also feel the "Kill Bill"-esque type of storyline and killing one's parent and then warning their child about if they want to come at him for revenge was just too contrived. But in the end, it all comes down to is the film's writing and execution. The writers made these characters too likable and while the film is focused on the driver, they made the audience supporting the suave Killer and his girlfriend Lily even more (which prompted the change of the original ending of the storyline).I will say that George Tillman Jr. does take a big step forward from his "Barbershop" film years by directing this action film. "Faster" is a visually cool looking film and on Blu-ray, the picture quality and audio quality is great! The special features were also good but it would have helped to have a director's commentary and giving Tillman a chance to reflect on certain scenes and if he would have done anything different. With that being said, I still enjoyed "Faster" as a popcorn action flick that features a good number of stars in the film. On Blu-ray, I felt that the picture quality and lossless audio soundtrack definitely enhanced my enjoyment of the film. But if you enjoy Dwayne Johnson action films and you want to see him in a more violent film and see him ultimately kick some ass, I have no doubt that "Faster" is a film that you will definitely enjoy. |

A Poorly Executed Action Film...Finally after seemingly being stuck in kid movies working for "The House of Mouse", Dwayne Johnson returns to his action roots with "Faster"."Faster" is the story of a man known as Driver (Dwayne Johnson), who upon being released from prison after serving ten years for a bank robbery instantly embarks upon a killing spree. However, these murders though seemingly random at first, are soon revealed to be linked to a tragic event ten years ago when Driver's older brother was murdered before his very eyes. Now, the only thing standing between Driver and those responsible for his pain is a burnt out cop (Billy Bob Thornton) and his temporary partner (Carla Gugino), and an assassin (Oliver Jackson-Cohen) hired to kill him.Prior to watching this film I was anxious to see it simply for the fact that Dwayne Johnson is back in his action element. No more of the cutesy, kid-friendly fare that he'd been saddled with by Disney for the last few years. However, when watching the movie unfold, my feelings toward the film were fast becoming muddled by the proceedings.Sure, Dwayne was kicking butt and taking names in a way harkening back to the hard-hitting action flicks of the eighties and nineties (or even last year's "The Expendables" for that matter), which was fun for a little while. However, the movie quickly started feeling like the action was the only thing attempting to hold everything together. The problem was that the story was unbelievably thin, to the point of being nearly non-existent in fact. Just to be clear, this is not to say that I was expecting Oscar caliber storytelling by any means. I just think that there should have been enough going on to at least carry the movie and keep my attention for the 90 minute duration. Apparently, these "lofty" expectations were too high for this film, and I found myself becoming bored after approximately twenty minutes. To make matters worse, the film's action scenes were surprisingly repetitive after the first two or three kills. Sure, there were a couple that broke up the monotony, but for the most part Driver dispatches his deadly brand of revenge/justice in the same expedient manner every time. At first this callous and swift approach was startling and unexpected, but soon I was wishing for some variety and more excitement. With this sort of bare-bones approach combined with the repetitive nature of the action sequences, I should have known the story written by Tony Gayton ("Murder By Numbers") and Joe Gayton ("Bulletproof") was going to be weak from the get-go. However, I tried to keep an open mind and just enjoy it for the brainless entertainment that it was, but even that wasn't enough to save this movie. Now, as I've mentioned already, the main star in this lackluster actioner is Dwayne Johnson. For an actor making his return to his roots (so to speak) this would seem the ideal role; after all, there's not much for him to do other than be violent. The problem with this is that Dwayne has proven in previous films that he has acting chops and can bring much more to a character besides hulking mass. To me, while I had hoped this film would cement his return to action hero status, which it did in some respects, it also felt like a step backwards as the role seemed like a walk in the park that could have gone to a lesser talent.Alongside Dwayne is another actor who was wasted in the role literally and figuratively (his character's an addict) is Billy Bob Thornton ("Monster's Ball"). While I'm no fan of Billy Bob's by any means, I do recognize that he is a very good actor all the same. But his role here is clichéd and boring, and it appears that Billy Bob felt the same way, because I thought he was really phoning in his performance every step of the way.Lastly, actress Carla Gugino ("Sin City") and actor Oliver Jackson-Cohen ("Going the Distance") attempt to bring more to their painfully stereotypical roles of the female detective desperate to prove herself and an assassin that doesn't enjoy his work, respectively. However, as with their fellow cookie-cutter cut-out characters portrayed by Dwayne and Billy Bob, these two were given characters with nothing more than unoriginality to work with. So, no matter how hard they tried; their efforts were never enough to overcome the drivel on display. Now, while on the topic of the cast, I have a couple of thoughts as to why they all signed on to this ill-fated project.I'm sure the appeal to work on what could have been a very successful action film, especially one that would hardly be considered taxing on their dramatic talents, would be enticing for any actor or actress looking for an easy payday. But the least these cast members could have done was make sure the material was worthy of their attention, which it clearly was not.In closing, as you have no doubt surmised, this movie was an utter disappointment. The only bright point for the film is the fact that Dwayne Johnson was back in his element. "Faster" is filled with missed opportunities, unoriginality, repetition, and above all, boredom."Faster" is rated R for violence, language, and brief drug use. |

Finally, The Rock's Back!!!!!I highly enjoyed this film! It was nonstop action, and the maincharacter was a rather interesting fellow! It was a nice change of pacefrom some of the other holiday films that are out there now. Itdefinitely has the potential to be expanded into at least a sequel. Ihope Faster is turned into a trilogy so The Rock's character will befurther developed as I cannot wait to see, hopefully, what happens nextin his story arc. It would also be interesting to see him matched upagainst the millionaire again or even working with him. If there is asequel, I hope Samuel L. Jackson will be in it. It's worth at least awatch, no doubt. |

Parker for the 21 CenturyI was surprised by this somewhat. I expected a brainless revengethriller. What I got was a nicely crafted caper, a throwback, a homage,to several genre films. The storytelling was straight to the point, almost linear. A vengefuljuggernaut-The Rock-gets out of jail and seeks revenge for his murderedbrother. He's as focused as a laser missile. An eclectic cast ofcharacters are in his way. A strung-out cop out for redemption (BillyBob Thornton), a neurotic hit-man and various unsavory people.I thought this was nice nod to 70s style vengeance driven movies andsomewhat reminiscent of Richard Stark/Donald Westlake's PARKERcharacter (seen, in its most recent incarnation in PAYBACK, starringMEL Gibson: one man seeking revenge against fellow criminals). A manfocused on his mission. The Rock is a cold-blood murder machine.Nothing heroic or even sympathetic about this guy, which makes himfascinating to watch as he runs down his list. This movie doesn't reinvent the wheel, but it is a nice cure for thesugar coated holiday releases flooding our cinemas. A nice balance ofviolence, solid acting and some great music provided by THE HEAVY. |

I Loved this movie......I'm a Rock fan and so happy to see him get back to kicking ass. He's Bad Ass the entire film and the flick is really entertaining. I was ticked when I thought I was getting the matinee price but it was still $7.50. Still well worth it. I will go see it again, and will buy it the day it's avaiable on blu-ray. |

Fairly routine vengeance B-movieFASTER (2010) **1/2 Dwayne Johnson, Billy Bob Thornton, Carla Gugino,Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Maggie Grace, Moon Bloodgood, Mike Epps, TomBerenger, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Jennifer Carpenter. Fairly routinevengeance B-movie with muscle-bound Johnson as an ex-con out for bloodupon his prison release to get revenge for the murder of his brotherafter a heist goes wrong. Predictable and ridiculous to a fault (i.e.many of the characters' names are really just descriptions – to witJohnson is only known as "Driver" & Thornton "Cop" !) no thanks to thepedestrian script by siblings Tony & Joe Gayton and over-the-topdirection by George Tillman Jr. the film runs on fumes by its climax. |

Thin PlotI'm a fan of "The Rock", however, have to say the plot is just too thinin this movie. Every attempt is made to develop the main characters butit just doesn't work out due the feeble story. The screen writersreally need to get more creative and stop dishing out such drivel. Lessquantity, more quality folks. At issue is not being able to relate and empathize with the maincharacters. A bunch of bad guys do something bad. Then another bunch ofbad guys who are in the know do something bad to the first bunch. Sowhat? Maybe they got what they deserved? For being bad guys in thefirst place maybe? |

Don't be fooled by the title. It may come off sounding like an action movie, but it's clearly not, itis a dark revenge thriller.Dwayne Johnson plays an ex-con who just got out of prison, and is eagerto get revenge on the men who killed his brother and left him for deadyears ago, after he and his brother pulled off a bank job, and wherefound out by another gang. And he is dead set on revenge, and he willstop at nothing. But soon two cops(Billy Bob Thornton and Carla Gugino)slowly start coming on his trail, so does a hit man, we wonder how willthis end? Not a bad, but not a great movie either. Dwayne Johnson has proved tobe a descent actor, and his performance here is pretty memorable, notplaying this bad ass of a character has annoying one dimensional. BillyBob Thornton and Carla Gugino are memorable also. But Hit Man characterreally started to lose his point of the story. The film started outwell paced, but it went to slow and boring as it went on. But I didlike it because it was not predicable. But I still say this is a rentit. |

It's The Rock!7 of 10 in its genre. And the genre is "Friday night popcorn movies".Don't seek for revelations, don't try to find real acting masterpieces.See in this movie the deal it brings - no brainier action for the time, when you need it. Dwayne has mastered "Don't mess with me" expression. And if you evenconsider seeing this movie, you will like it. The movie has low amountof awkward "why-did-this-happen" moments and enough of "let-me-rewind"ones. So, it's the perfect deal - you will get what you want if youlook for simple, honest action movie.P.S. Oh, The Rock, please stay in this genre! We need real actionheroes! |

A solid character centered revenge flickOh oh, The Rock finally playing in a good movie! He deserved it. Theway I see it, he is disadvantaged as an actor by the fact he was afamous wrestler. They never take him seriously. But in this film he gota break, not because of the complexity of the role, but the one of thescript.About the movie, it is a classic revenge film, in which the maincharacter goes after the people who wronged him, but where it shines isthe character portrayal. There are no cardboard characters (except forCarla Gugino's, which is the most incompetent cop I've seen in awhile), and the actors involved are shown in all of their roles, good, bad and in between. There are some flaws in the film, but mainly the police work and thehorrible title. I've postponed watching the movie because I thought itwas some sort of TripleX meets Gone in 60 Seconds thing. I am happy tosay it was not. It was more like Kill Bill meets Crash, but that's abit of a stretch.Bottom line: a movie worth watching and an excellent accomplishment fora movie of the genre. |

Stupid Plot. Stupid Wrestler.Brainless and plot less. These two words about sum up the basic Dwayne"The Rock" Johnson style action movie. But what do you expect from awrestler, and the audience willing to buy into his reality, who buildshis steroid-enhanced body up for a modern reality where a single bulletcan end your life? Only gym rats enjoy Dwayne Johnson movies, as theylive their action filled fantasies out in director controlledrealities. These clowns are useless to society and continue to fawnover gorillas like this, hoping to relive the glory days of their highschool athletic careers that went no where, despite their repetitiveboastings that argued otherwise. My suggestion to this childish audience, is to learn a science, Englishor math based skill, so that they could base their masculinity onsomething that actually provides a livelihood.Instead of perpetually gravitating to these fantasies, dumb-down fortheir stunted intellects. How many times do you need to be told you are dumb, until it finallysinks into your thick mentally challenged craniums? |
