You can have it all!As a young girl I saw this movie and it has stayed with me ever since. This was a kick-a** chick flick. The scene where Nick and Grunt were waiting with roses for Alex after she rocked the dance audition still gets to me. Alex is a modern day heroine. This film inspires you to follow your dreams and to never give up. Alex's spririt was just contagious. You felt her highs, lows and frustrations as a young person finding her way and could relate. I love this film. Yes, this movie was a blockbuster, the soundtrack was a mega hit, and the cut-out, off the shoulder sweatshirt spawned a fashion frenzy, but that wasn't even a factor to me. I saw this movie after it went to video and had no idea of the film's popularity. To this day, in my opinion it remains one of the most inspirational films for women. The film's energy will resonate within you long after you see it. You care about the characters and what happens to them because they are just like you and I. Then of course there is the soundtrack. Back in the day I think I scrambled 2 flashdance soundtrack cassettes from playing it so often. Watch it and enjoy! |

A Believable story that any dreamer can identify with.Flashdance is one of the most remembered films of the 1980s. It is full of rythym and fast paced tempo that most people were used to seeing in the popular dance movies like Footloose and Dirty Dancing. Jennifer Beals plays her best role as the young wannabe ballet dancer who strives to make it in a rough neighborhood. This film whould be nothing without its music or dancing. It is one of the best date movies too. I highly reccomend this film to anyone with a dream or anyone who is a fan of films from the 1980s. |

memory of the 80sIt was a very 80s movie -- the music, the dance, the way people look in themovie. I have only watched it once, and that was more than 10 years agowhenI was a kid going to a primary school in Beijing.I am Chinese and I grew up in Beijing, so I don't know how much my opinionsreflect the typical audience. This movie made a very deep impression on me.It was in the late 80s when I watched it, and it, along with other movies, introduced me to American culture. And I was just fascinated. I rememberfora while everybody in China was doing breakdancing, partly because of_Flashdance_. I realize it is not a very good movie, but for me this moviebrings back memory of the 80s, when my friends and I first learned aboutAmerican culture, and how we tried to learn everything about America as wegrew up. |

Bad but really funOkay - the dancing is done by someone else, the script has a bunch offlaws (dialogue being almost the worst), and the basic premise isabsurd - an 18-yo dreaming of starting a career in ballet? (In ballet, you're just about approaching the peak of your career at 18.) However, the movie has some heart-grabbing moments, the score iswonderful, the girls are pretty, and the moral of the story (keep ontrying until you win) is as true as it ever was. This is probably theworst movie you'll ever have a wonderful time watching. As a past professional dancer, I probably watch this movie about once ayear. It's an essential part of any dancer's library, regardless of itsflaws. |

Not a dance movie.I dance and this has got to be one of the worst dance moviesmade. I can't believe they are making a sequel. It might havebeen because of the eighties music, but I don't think anyone in thismovie (except the trained ballet dancers) could dance. I don't likethis movie. |

ONCE UPON A TIME I SAW BLUE FLAMINGO..........I listen to soundtrack now and am thinking, WHY NOT NOW? Why they notmakelike this now, I not know- is better than Flubber, is better than theHughGrant Nine Months Later, or Six Weeks Notice, Stripteasing, the Showgirl,The Street Fighting Man, Velvet Goldminer, Silver Magnolias, theInternet, and I do not know what- is better than all this masterpises. The music,byGeorgina Mordinna, is fantast, and Jenny Eels, she is like SEX MANIAC ORSOMETHING! REALLY!! You can see from the dancing- she crazy, like sheneedone, she need something (I HAVE!). This is good one from the child hood, make me hard, feel good, and better, is a happy, nice one, give to me asmile. Good to break to (or something like that, maybe not thesame). |

The dream is eternalThe film is an image of what the 1980s were, of Pittsburgh in the 1980s, this temple of heavy industry coming to an end and starting to look for a new future, due to its industrial crisis. Yet this film has not lost any charm and meaning. The young Alex, an 18 year old girl, is the symbol of this city, an industrial worker during the day and a dancer at night, with a dream : to join the ballet company of the city. Industry producing art. Industrial work producing the dream of art. Alex is a willful young woman who follows the road of her desire, if not ambition, but keeping her ethics pure all along. Pure by looking for love and not pure pleasure. Pure by refusing any favor in her quest and longing for a victory that can be called her own because it owes nothing to anyone and any help from outside herself. Pure because she salvages her friend from becoming a gogo girl in a shady place where dancing is just some kind of dressing for enticing prostitution. Pure because she finds her energy in an old friendship with an old dancer who is encouraging her in getting started and competing for an audition that could open the door to a new artistic life. Pure because she is not soiled by all those who would like to drag her down into the mud of selling her young beauty and art to the gloating eyes of perverse and lustful males. And she can succeed because she never lets her dream die. In life the dream is the almighty sign on the road to epiphany and Alex will meet with this epiphany of hers, the one she has dreamed of for years and she can find only in the energy that comes from her mind and her body, from her unconquerable soul. This film has not aged in spite of all the changes that have occurred in our societies. The dream is the energizing force that leads the way, too often of some Cross, to transcendency. Thugs do PrettyThere are dirty, moneygrubbing thugs in this movie, not ashamed to makemoney from sex. They operate a strip club, from which one of thecharacters is "rescued." This movie is made by the same sort ofmoneygrubbing thugs (Gruber, Peters, Bruckheimer) , and there's nodoubt that sex is at the top of its values. It has essentially nostory, only a series of setups. Its clearly designed to sell music, which then was LPs.And yet it works for me. The reason is that its cinematic, a and finelyso. I'm usually pretty tough on films that feature dance, unless thecamera itself dances. This one doesn't. But what it does have is crispediting and superb, absolutely superb lighting.I think dePalma started this and did the stuff that works, thestoryboards, the lighting design. I imagine he supervised the scoutingof the dirty sets where we see smoke, glow and sparks. I imagine heworked out the tricks where the face is occluded so that we can swapour actress with real dancers, several of them.So you can find three things to like here: the fold where the smarmyguys are in the movie, the fantastic lighting, beginning with the veryfist shots, and the dancing. It almost seems as if the dancing cameafter the major cinematic decisions. It was unusual for the time: moreenergetically sensual. Tight in energy but lose in inspiration. All ofthe dances have an on screen audience, but one: the "manic" dance. Thatlack of on screen audience after the deliberate inclusion of oneinvites us in. And this dance is photographed differently. We don't see the wholebody: we see parts, and while the camera doesn't spatially move, itdoes temporally. The editors dance. The visual rhythm invokesvoyeurism, identification and syncopation all at the same time. This issignificant movie-making, hidden in a rather trivial-seeming wrapper. Gruber at the time advertised this as "Rocky with a woman," but there'sno resemblance story-wise. There is with the energy though.Ted's Evaluation -- 3 of 3: Worth watching. |

WonderfulThis show is the best movie i ever seen. The actors are nice....provided the songs are pleasant to my ears too. This story has a lot ofmoral behind it, like telling us to strive for our dreams and stufflike that. I really love the last part when the lead actress when aheadwith the audition in this prestigious theatre. Despite the fact thatshe never had any dancing in her entire life, ( which she is requiredto fill up in the audition form, and she do not have any dancing shoes) she still went for it. Her moves were marvelous, combining the movesof break-dance, ballet, street-dance and most importantly, flashdance.Even though she failed 1 or 2 times in the audition, she take herchances seriously and she was accepted by the judges. So I would reallyrecommend this show to everyone, whether young or old, male or female. |

A representative of the 80's to be sure. But it's the good 80's, and I'd like to point out that this is more of anartistic movie than anything else, especially with the lighting and the maincharacter's quirks(even though it doesn't seem like that was the producer'sintention!) Also the story of how this was cast makes me wonder (I would'vevoted for Demi Moore, but oh well)if the producers knew how this moviewould've fared. It's started the 80's new wave look I'm told, and itactually enpowered women in it's own shallow way, so we can safely say itwas a breakthrough, kinda like The Matrix restarted the wholeindustrial-cyberpunk goth trend. Still, why does she want to be a ballerina? It's doesn't make sense, she'd be better off in a chorus line where thepeople are likeable as she was!!! As a dancer back in the 80's (and yes, itwas hard to admit to being a male dancer back then!!) this movie was cool towatch and the soundtrack was pretty awesome!! Oh well, this movie is weird,a high-energy sleeper that actually was OK. A 6.5 |

Work It, JenniferA female welder (yes, you read that correctly) dreams of being aballerina -- all she needs to do is convince the audition committee foran elite dancing school that she has what it takes. Boy does she ever, showing them that stripper moves and ballet aren't mutually exclusive, all set to the top 40 sounds of Irene Cara.Welcome to the 1980s, folks, and more specifically, to the run of dancemovies clearly inspired by the look and feel of MTV, this one starringJennifer Beals. "Flashdance" is ridiculous, but would it be anywherenearly as fun to watch now if it weren't? Grade: C |

The pinnacle of an 80's collectionFor anyone who loves all things 80's this movie is a must have. Jennifer Beals is stunning (even if she didn't do her own dance moves), and after watching this movie is it no wonder that her performance led girls across America to don leg warmers and sweatshirts with the neck's cut out. I would recommend this movie to anyone who loves cheesy movies that are so bad they're good. This movie is a classic, and worth owning even if it is just to see the stunning Ms. Beals take her bra off with her shirt still on. |

DancingThe story goes, there was another choreographer originally, a reallyhot New York/Las Vegas choreographer who was known for rhythmic, sexymovement with style and real jazz technique. She was also a top teacherin New York at the time, with shows running in Las Vegas, Reno andAtlantic City, also Toronto. She had also worked on Broadway. She wassigned and spent about six weeks on the movie. The producers would notgive her any of the music to work with, and as a musical choreographer, this would not do. They couldn't give her even a sampling of what itwould sound like. After six weeks, she was bored to tears, and quit, going back to teaching crowded classes. Her career continued as it hadbeen, but if she had stayed, she would have been famous or infamous, but the movie would have been completely different in tone. The Bealscharacter would have really danced like a showgirl, with class, style, and hot, hot, hot. There would have been no running in place, noaerobics, fitness class moves with no rhythm or funk. Alas, we shallnever know how it would have turned out. Jennifer Beals would havestill needed a dance double, though, for the moves I'm talking about. If you want to know who the choreographer I'm talking about is, askJennifer Grey. She knew her quite well, took her class for years. |

Despite the flaws, this was actually enjoyableWhen it comes to dance movies, it depends on what kind it is. Here, wetalk about a movie who won an Oscar for Best Original Song, called"What a Feeling". Cool. Let's check it out. Now onto to the rest ofmovie before we go carrying ourselves away.So apparently we're talking about an 80's dancing hottie who somehowsteps out of the shadow of working jobs at both a welding plant and astripper pole. That's cool, but nothing really special. In fact, whenit comes to stories about people who step up from shadows, Step Up hasdone this quite better than this. That's not to say this was bad, because it actually wasn't despite the negative reviews. Anyway, character development doesn't quite qualify as a strong point here, asthe only close to developed character was Alex, played surprisinglywell by Jennifer Beals. There is too the believability to consider, which is actually passable with Flashdance. You can believe thatsomeone could end up falling so far as to work in a nudist bar. You canbelieve that someone will just fall flat in their faces when they'rehaving auditions. You can believe that you can find out your bestfriend quit their job from their boss. But that's not all. I also foundmyself laughing at some parts of the movie because some parts seem totake a more comedic twist than the rest of the movie. Yet one thingthat can't be ignored is that the movie was too predictable that it wasnot unlike anything seen before. For example, I was able to predict thefall of Alex's best friend and the plot trajectory she was forced to gothrough as the movie unfolded. The movie was a little mixed in myopinion, even though it knew where it wanted to go.Now, for the Oscar-winning song. I've heard the song, but that doesn'tmean I didn't like it. It fit very well in the movie, along with allthe other music inserted in the movie, and that probably was the bestpart of the movie, so I'll take a cheers to that. A movie with a great messageI really can't say why I saw this movie, but I saw it for all the rightreasons. To be honest, Jenifer Beals gave a great performance. Sheexemplifies what it means to have drive! It may not be the best, but ifyou think about it, there's a message in this movie: never give out onyour dream! After watching this, that's been my mindset ever since!Thank you, Flashdance! This is worthy of an 9 out of 10. By the way: any kind of movie snob who bashes this movie obviously hasno drive. |

the life of lowered expectationsi love this movie. i loved it when it first came out, and i love itnow. unable to don the torn sweatshirts and leg-warmers due to obviousgender discrepancies i did the next best thing, i dated a girl who, atthe tender age of eight, i swore was the spitting image of jenniferbeals. looking back, well, let's just say the ignorance of youth isproof that ignorance is bliss. best of all, this movie taught me at ayoung age that it was completely acceptable to have markedly lower lifeexpectations. think about it, jennifer beals' character alex is asteelworker by day, stripper at night who dreams of one day dancing atthe pittsburgh conservatory. the what? gee, the cincinnati revue notfocused enough? apparently all that matters is that you accomplish yourdream, not whether the dream fulfilled makes a noticeable difference inyour life. just that you did it. you can now move on. |

Great slice of 80s nostalgia, would have liked some extras! This review is from: Flashdance (DVD) Who was a teen in the 80s and did NOT feel an impact of this movie? Whether you liked or hated this film, it was one of the key examples of the unique mixture of music and movies that we saw in the 80s.Why just 3 stars, then? One complaint is that the music track does not play well on the DVD. This could just be my copy, and I was too lazy to try to return through Amazon to see if I just got a bad disc. The main reason is LACK OF EXTRAS! If a studio is going to re-release a movie on DVD and charge over $15 for it, there should be plenty of extras. How about the original music videos, or a documentary on dance in the 80s - especially breakdancing which had one of its first broad/public exposures in this film? Even interviews with cast/crew on the making of the film and the hype after its release? Something could have and should have been done.Almost exact same comments for Footloose, so you don't have to read that review, too. |
