Do not waste you're time watching it

As a fan of a couple previous Adam Sandler movies, I was planning to gowatch his newest movie "Grown Ups." Until I heard that there is no plotto the movie, I kind of hesitated to go watch it, but I said it tomyself "Hmm, it's an Adam Sandler movie, yeah it has no plot but atleast it's going to be funny so it can't be that bad." I was more wrongthan I ever was. I literally laughed twice or three times in the wholemovie. All the jokes were unfunny, the movie was boring, I wouldn't considerthis to be comedy, they should make a whole new category for movieslike this, and I'm really starting to change my mind about being anAdam Sandler fan after watching this piece of junk. I want 1 and 40minutes of my life back. Pretty much sums it up.

3 laughs in the whole movie.

First off, I really don't like Adam Sandler movies in the least, hisbest work Spanglish and Funny People, were both driven by other talentsplaying off the same guy he always plays but still had enough in themto make it enjoyable. This movie is more of the same Sandler with eachcharacter basically playing themselves with no real development at all.The film never has any cohesiveness and always feels like a bunch offriends wrote a movie and invited more friends to help. I won't evenget into the story because it is so simple and contrived it's not worthmentioning. Everything is just one liners, you can tell most lines areimprovised which is why most fall flat and even the physical humor isbland. Bring your date to this one and she will think twice about yourtastes and about dating you.

Sometimes funny, but mostly we are not amused

For some of us watching "Grown Ups", a buzzer at the end of the firsthalf would have been a welcome relief. At that point, RoxanneChase-Feder (Selma Hayek- Pinault, please note), the wife of ex-schoolbasketball star Lenny Feder (Adam Sandler), prepares to storm out ofthe lakeside lodge and fly back to Milan, where she is a fashion maven.By then, we have been subjected to the images of a dead man's ashesblown over a bucket of fried chicken; a "48-month-old" boy beingbreast-fed; a grandmother's bunion and swollen toe; a middle-aged fatman urinating while in the middle of a New England lake in full view ofyoung ladies; and bacon sizzling on a bug zapper. Those gags are meantto make our day, but despite the occasional wit, restrained flatulencejokes, and chuckle- baiting punch lines, they leave us cheerless andwondering if we deserve better. No, we don't deserve better, because we stay glued to our seats, hungryfor any entertainment. Roxanne stays for the flimsiest of reasons, andwe get another dose of the same-oh same-oh, only a bit grosser, a tadzanier, and a little more hectic. Sometimes, in a flash of comedicbrilliance or a cute, well-delivered joke, we laugh. Sometimes. Breastmilk squirts across the screen. Dave Spade's bum makes a cinematicdebut ("That's an ass?" – the movie's best line). And some pratfallshappen, but we're still not amused.Just before the end, we are treated to what could be the mostexcruciating scene from Hollywood in recent years, when out of theblue, the three married couples in the story do theI-have-something-to-confess routine, pouring out their hurts and painnot even hinted at earlier. Television does this sort of thing muchbetter and "Grown Ups" shows how deeply television has subvertedmainstream cinema, and us moviegoers as well. If the scene was meant tobe a parody, then the script and direction could have used a lot offine-tuning. Curiously, the careers of the main collaborators of this movie, director Dennis Dugan and co-screenwriter Sandler himself, got startedin television. The sad thing is what they have here is a rich lode ofpossibilities, from the story concept to the able actors. A quintet ofmiddle school basketball stars reunites after 30 years for the funeralof their coach, their mentor on life. This theme of buddies' reunionhas produced two memorable films, "The Secaucus Seven" and "The BigChill". Structuring a comedy or farce around it -- now that's a truechallenge. Another angle barely explored here is the new generationgap: between the texting and the Web-social-networking kids of theDigital Noughties and the survivors of the Me Decade of the 70s, or theRevivalist 80s .Sandler succeeds in the box-office because he has made and still canmake millions laugh. And to top it all, he's got one of the mostlikable faces in the business, totally affable and engaging in areassuring sort of way. And don't forget his great comic timing, delivered with his trademark smile. But he may be depleting his bank ofadmirers. He and the other makers of "Grown Ups" were sitting on a goldmine of material and talent but they managed to deliver only fluff.

Not That Grown-Up, But Still Kind Of Funny

For a movie called "Grown Ups", this comedy was pretty juvenile. But that's what I want from a comedy, so that was okay. What wasn't okay, was that Grown Ups started off pretty darn funny, but just got tiresome after about the first half of the film. It probably would have been better off as a half hour sitcom than as a feature-length movie. And it was surprising to see Salma Hayek in this, considering that she was nominated for an Academy Award for her performance in Frida. Worth watching once, if you haven't quite grown up.

weak

This show starts out with a few laughs, then turns inappropriate for the young, and cliche for the experienced. Included is a breast feeding 4 year old? Multiple threats and requests to kill a family pet and a seemingly unending string of derogatory remarks about someones wife who is supposed to be older than him (though the difference is hardly discernible). Suffice it to say the script is well beneath the capabilities of the participating actors. If any one shines it would be the nanny, in my opinion.

it wasn't that bad yet wasn't that good

Grown Ups is just another Sandler and his buddies movie. It is simplyabout Sandler, James, Rock, Spade, and Scheinder hanging out andremembering their past. It starts out with the friends as kids at abasketball championship game, then fast forwards to the present day. This is where the characters come in to place, and where it starts. Then once the characters are introduced, they all get a message tellingthat their coach "passed away". So they take this news and decide to goto his funeral, then eventually spend and hang out at a beach house. Alot of critics slammed this one saying with all the comedic talentinvolved it should've brought more laughs. I guessed that's true butlaughed a few especially some time towards the ending. To me this waslike being at an actual cottage with these guys cause I believe thebanter back and forth amongst them wasn't all scripted more brillianceto the film and maybe more of the laughs critics missed out on. For anyfan of these guys. Though it felt kinda cheesy and seemed like it wasfilmed in a weekend or two, and they just put in the fun parts. OverallI enjoyed q few parts though it could have and should have been muchbetter 5/10

Hilarious movie with great tunes and actors.

This movie is just what you would expect from a Happy MadisonProduction. Adam Sandler and fellow Saturday Night Live alumni (DavidSpade, Chris Rock, Rob Schneider) plus Kevin James spend a weekendreconnecting with each other and remembering their dearly beloved highschool basketball coach. The old rivalry against the team they beat inschool is afoot and against several other Saturday Night Live alumni(Tim Meadows and Collin Quinn). Look for many other regulars from otherAdam Sandler movies. I love to look for the actors he brings in fromhis previous films, this just adds to the connection between theaudience and the characters. The interaction between the guys, theirwives, and kids is what drives this movie. The music is awesome and thestory is well developed for a feel good family friendly movie. For theguys there is plenty of eye candy and the women will be pleasantlysurprised with the water park scene as well. Adam Sandler and companyare often under-appreciated for their acting ability because it isoften wrapped in comedy. The kids and the wives in the movie bringbalance and add depth to the film. While the movie will not win any academy awards it does offer BestActress Oscar nomination (Selma Hayek), Screen Actors Guild Award and aGolden Globe Award for Best Actor – Television Series Drama (SteveBuscemi) as some other great talents. Low reviews of the movie do notdo justice for the decently developed characters and use of the cast.If you truly like comedy you will enjoy this movie.

Could've been so much more

With the sheer volume of comedic talent attached, you'd think thiswould be an easy home run in terms of laughs. Unfortunately, most ofthe jokes were cringe-worthy. I've liked Sandler in past films, and hehas some good lines here as well....which is the problem. Y'see,Sandler co-wrote the script with another fella, which leads me tobelieve Sandler wrote all the good lines for himself, along with givinghimself a beautiful wife. This is all my theory, but it's strange howhe (out of all 5 leads) didn't have many problems with his personallife.Nevertheless, the interaction between them is solid at times, awkwardat others. I actually liked Spade the most since it felt like he wasn'tdelivering his lines like a robot. Another issue was when all 5 weretogether, it felt more like they were doing standup for a large crowdinstead of playing off each other naturally and doing some, I dunno,ACTING. Add to the fact that Rock looked bored the entire movie and wasgiven nothing to do, and the stupid preachy message at the end, sillyold folks jokes, and you have probably the most disappointing movie ofthe year, given the actors involved.

Where's the Fuss?

i have seen about 50 odd films in English and other languages, but thisfilm stayed in my mind longer than any film. I just couldn't forget it.The hero Adam Sandler .... wow! This guy is the best out there inAmerican (Hollywood) cinema....and i mean it. i am a die hard fan ofjohnny depp, Kenu Reeves and manchild Sandler, for a moment i wasconfused in choosing who was my favorite actor, this guy can reallyact! The director needs a special mention here, the entire film has aHollywood kind of a feel to it.Watch this movie, closely observe Sandler, and I am sure you wouldagree with me.But I really expected a gangster movie with great substance with lotgreat dialogues and Intelligent Plote(like Puthupettai) buthmhmh...Except for the runtime, nothing special to mention. For me,this movie is a certain 1/10.

Another atrocious "comedy" starring Sandler

I know, I know...I voluntarily went to see Grown Ups, even knowing itwas another comedy starring Adam Sandler, who I usually cannot stand.Iknew what was expecting me.So, what am I complaining about? I will tellyou: I complain because I try to be as objective as possible (eventhough I do not always achieve it), and I think a film deserves theopportunity of being evaluated by its own achievements and fails.Sure, that attitude is balanced by the unavoidable expectations created by myprevious experiences with a same actor, director or genre. So, acceptingthe fact that it is impossible for me to be completely objective, atleast I have to give the movie the chance to defense itself, and thebest way of doing that is paying in order to see it.And in the case ofGrown Ups, I regret having done that.As horrible as the comparison sounds, Grown Ups pretends to be a modernversion of the brilliant film The Big Chill, but with jokes about urineand obesity. Its cast includes talented comedians, like Colin Quinn, TimMeadows, David Spade, Kevin James and the great Chris Rock.My hopebefore watching Grown Ups was that their work was going to raise alittle bit the quality of the movie, but unfortunately, that did nothappen...Sandler's malignant aura infected all the actors, and it putthem at his same level of clowning, which provokes more irritation thanlaughs. And a factor which was obviously introduced in order to attractmore spectators is the presence of cute actresses. However, not even thegood looks from Salma Hayek, Maria Bello and Madison Riley were enoughto compensate the atrocious screenplay.Talking about the screenplay, I found it to be boring and painfullyinsipid. We have the obligatory rude old lady, precocious kids, immatureadults and a loser whose wife could be his mother...or his grandma.Ihave the impression that Sandler simply reunited his friends to have agood time, film some twaddle and sell it as a "summermovie".Co-screenwriters Sandler and Fred Wolf did not even bother totell a real story, so the whole movie is only a connection ofunconnected and unfunny vignettes which do not lead to anywhere.Insummary, I hope you have a better common sense than me and avoid thisexecrable movie. Please, learn from my mistakes; at least like that theywill be useful for something.

Depends

This movie could run anywhere from 4 stars to 2 depending on what kind of comedy you like. If Zohan and I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry were laugh riots for you then this might be a 4 star movie. I put it as a 3. Though I do like stupid comedies, I was expecting a bit more from this movie just based on the cast. This is basically a reunion of the 90's cast of SNL with James filling the role of Farley. Some funny moments, but just not enough with the talent of the cast in play. I enjoyed it as a nice summer comedy.

Great film

Love this film. To me it seems exactly like how imagine a weekend gettogether with some old mates would be in the future. Just having alaugh, messing around, going to the places you used to go, etc. I don't think jokes seem forced at all, just a bunch of mates takingthe mick out of each other at every opportunity lol. Great story line cracking little jokes and funny scenes. The actorswere perfect in every way. I can't think of a single thing that I wouldwant them to change about that film if they remade it. So funny, itdoesn't make you laugh at every second, it's just little funny thingthey do and say throughout the film. Watching it would definitely cheeryou up.Great film, would definitely recommend it to anyone.

Just call him Burt Reynolds, Jr.

I keep seeing Adam Sandler movies because I'm desperate for laughs inthese times. But I was disappointed once again. Grownups had too muchjuvenile "put down" humor. The buddies (the wives aren't given much tosay or do) put down the kids, the adults, the mother-in-law, even thedog. Very lazy, shallow script that could have been a comedy classic. After 22 Sandler movies, I only rated 2 very good (50 First Dates withDrew Barrymore and Don't Mess with the Zohan). I hated Big Daddybecause it taught kids it's OK to pee against the wall in the city.Grownups gives guys frequent leering of T&A. Yawn for us chicks, AdamSandler has become like Burt Reynolds and his Smoky and the Bandit ol'boy buddy flicks. He gives all his friends small parts and plays thelaid back dude. For that he now pockets $20 million plus a % of thegross. I said there was no justice in the world when he was worth"only" $50 million (after he made Mr. Deeds). Yes Grownups had somechuckles (I loved the cougar couple and the basketball showdown hadsome good recurring laughs and an all is well ending, but it was mostlyjust too predictable. Now that he's personally worth more than $300million - per Celebrity Net Worth site - If only he'd part with some ofit to pay more for scripts with more depth and some intelligent humorinstead of the same old shallow plot with low class humor frombeginning to end.

Hmmmm, not so good

I hoped that this movie was decent enough based on the cast involvedbut my wife and I were pretty disappointed. It was filled with clichéstatements and scenarios, similar jokes as other movies and overall badwriting in my opinion. I kept watching because I always do but I wassad that I did.By the way, I love movies and have been on IMDb for a while and this ismy first review....motivated by how bad my wife and I thought thismovie was. There were a few funny pieces to the movie but not enough to turn itaround for us.

Funny But Really Stupid

OK. I saw this movie in the theatres and it was very funny. This is atypical Adam Sandler/Kevin James comedy like I now pronounce you chuckand larry. This movie was very stupid and there were so many epic failsand stupidity going on throughout the movie. I got tired of those whenI was watching this movie. It was still funny though. There were a lotof people rolling on floor laughing and stuff like that. But a verystupid normal Adam Sandler movie. I recommend this to only adam sandlerfans. You'll have fun but you'll get bored by the fails that they havein the movie. I'll give this movie a 6/10. It a plain comedy. :) :) :)xD
