Plot Summary:
Hot Tub Time Machine hits the bulls-eye its a rude, crude comedy with enough smarts and emotional sweetness to make it completely entertaining. Seeking to bring some youthful optimism back to their failed, miserable lives, three middle-aged guys--Adam (John Cusack), Nick (Craig Robinson), and Lou (Rob Corddry)--go to a mountain resort where they spent some of their wildest days (reluctantly dragging along Adams nephew, Jacob, played by newcomer Clark Duke). A drunken accident in the titular hot tub sends them swirling back to 1986, where each of them decides to risk changing the future (and possibly erasing Jacob from existence) by doing things just a little differently. A plot summary doesnt capture the movies rambunctious, daffy spirit as much as well, the ridiculous title this is a movie called Hot Tub Time Machine! Any expectation you may have will be met and surpassed. John Cusack delivers another underplayed yet marvelously funny performance, his best since High Fidelity Clark Duke, from the TV show Greek, proves a promising young comic talent. But the movie really belongs to Robinson and Corddry, whove been floating around the edges of tons of comedies--some have been good, some have been bad, but theyve both been consistently funny even in crappy movies. Hot Tub Time Machine gives them center stage and lets them reveal the comic chaos they can deliver. It helps, but is not necessary, to have lived through the 80s to find Hot Tub Time Machine exquisitely silly.

Four friends travel back in time with the help of a magic hot tub.[...]Bonus Features:There is the theatrical edition, but also the unrated edition not shown in theaters. There is a trailer and some deleted scenes. There were several screenings of this movie in Indianapolis so I saw a really early version of the film that contained some of these deleted scenes like Craig Robinson waiting on Thomas Lennon at the 'Sup Dawg grooming salon and John Cusack sharing his past to Lizzy Caplan in the ski lodge. These scenes include more detail of the 80s ski outfits as they wait for a turn skiing and Clark Duke gets to interact with his romantic interest more. There is also some pathetic begging by John Cusack for his girlfriend to take him back while she leaves him for Gunner. Lots of extra ad-libbing by Rob Corddry from the, uh, bathroom scene and Craig Robinson on the phone to the young girl version of his future wife and both are simply hysterical.Chevy Chase shows up in another enigmatic sequence to tell them the Hot Tub is like Dorothy's ruby slippers and they didn't need the energy drink...which could have saved them quite a bit of time in the movie if they had used it. All in all, if you loved this movie, you'll get to see more funny moments that didn't make the cut theatrically and the unrated version of the movie is pretty nuts! |

Great White Buffalo...great white buffaloIf I understand the meaning behind the great white buffalo alluded to in HTTM, I can unequivocally say this film is in and of itself a great white buffalo. From the title to the closing credits, this movie is an absurd, preposterous concept that absolutely works and had me crying tears of laughter.Four downtrodden, depressing friends get together for a wild male weekend full of cavorting and camaraderie at a ski resort. This ski resort is special because it's where three of them had some of the most memorable experiences of their lives in the 80's, and the trip is meant to reinvigorate youthful momentum and break adult monotony. Unfortunately, the resort is now in shambles, not nearly what they remember, and depressing as hell. Not what they expected. When the four decide to obnoxiously drunk in a hot tub, you know what happens next: They are transported back to their debaucherous and exciting 20-something lives of Winterfest '86 where they careened recklessly down the slopes, dove face first Scarface-style into mounds of drugs, and bedded bimbo ski bunnies dressed in atrociously colored yet wonderfully form-fitting 80's attire (spandex is a privilege, not a right). The rest is side-splitting comedy, as the foursome must make every attempt to make their way "Back to the Future" while possibly righting past wrongs. The main cast (John Cusack, Craig Robinson, Rob Corddry, Clarke Duke) is perfect together. Tons of chemistry. The supporting cast is just as good: Chevy Chase is the aloof hot tub repairman; William Zabka is the same character William Zabka always plays; and Crispin Glover is the oddball, one-armed* bellhop (a great touch considering his McFly roots in Back to the Future). It's just too bad they couldn't find a bit role for Michael J. Fox. I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the FACT that Rob Corddry absolutely steals every scene. With 80's references to pop-culture, music, fashion, politics, and everything else, the movie is packed full of hilarity. When Robinson gets onstage to relive his musical glory days, I defy you not to bob your head and snicker at his "new" song. When Corddry wakes up hungover in the hot tub and says hello to a squirrel in his own special way, there is no way you don't laugh. And the "gag" joke between Zabka and Corddry is epic. With the exception of the awkward insertion of a new love interest for John Cusack - a subplot never fully developed - the entire film is a compounded running joke that will evoke great memories for those who are fond of the era, mixed with various forms of laugh out loud comedy. Add in an awesome soundtrack and a predictable yet completely fulfilling twist ending (it's the ultimate what if we all imagine if we were allowed to time travel), and this movie is easily the most enjoyable of the year. While not quite on par with the cult status Hangover deserves, this film is very comparable, quotable, and hilarious. |

F-Bomb FactoryFirst, I have to confess that I thought it was funny and had a good cast of characters (Crispin Glover's parts are really funny). The hot tub runs deeper than the story line, but you had to gather that from the title. If you're not bothered by somewhere between 25-50 F-Bombs in a movie (seriously, at least 25), then you're home- enjoy it. But I only write my own review to warn others like me, who would be a little embarrassed to have seen it in the theater. See it on cable if you have to. Last item- only a couple of sex scenes, but the language in 1 of them was way over the top not even funny (the last one). It does have a great ending- |

Very funny and moderately raunchy flick.I went to an advanced screening of HTTM tonight in Phoenix, AZ. I wasable to get a free pass for two people from a local smoke shop(weird Iknow). I have followed this movie since they announced it and wasstoked to see the finished product.I was not let down. I was greeted with a moderately raunchy and for themost part funny movie. Rob Corddry and Clark Duke definitely steal theshow. Their on-screen spats/confrontations will leave most audiencemembers laughing so hard they almost cry. John Cusack and CraigRobinson are also funny but I found them to be more akin to a "secondstage" performance. They were very funny but had more "touchingrealization" moments than lol humor. I felt Chevy Chase was greatlyunderused but Crispin Glover made me laugh every time he was on screen. Short and Vague for you potential viewers of this film. |

Boorishness Not My Idea of Comedy, But a Few Parts Worked OKHot Tub Time Machine (1:39, R) — 4 — Other: Comedy, 3rd string, originalThe present day finds Adam (John Cusack), Nick (Craig Robinson), andLou (Rob Corddry) in their early 40s and pretty dissatisfied with howtheir lives have turned out so far. They were buddies when they were18, but that was back in 1986, and they've grown apart since then. Loustill sees himself as a wild man, tho — the Violator, in fact — anddamn near kills himself with exhaust fumes while drunkenly revving hissports car in a closed garage. This shakes the guys, and they gettogether to try to recapture some of that old magic by heading off toSilver Peaks Lodge in Kodiak Village, a picturesque ski resort that washome to some of their fondest childhood memories.Well, it used to be picturesque, anyway. It's fallen on hard times, symbolized by general ramshackleness and surly behavior from their1-armed bellhop Phil (Crispin Glover). Rather than being cheered, theyget even more depressed, until their attention is drawn to the glowing, bubbling hot tub out back. During an evening of drunken cavortingtherein, they accidentally spill some Chernoblye Water in the tub'smechanism, and next thing they know they're back at Winterfest 86, afact confirmed by asking a passerby "What color is Michael Jackson?".To each other, they look the same, but a glance in a mirror revealsthat the rest of the world sees them as their 18-year-old selves.Along for the ride but physically unchanged is Adam's nephew Jake(Clark Duke), a nerd who'd been living in Adam's basement because hismom Kelly (Collette Wolfe) had just moved in with yet anotherboyfriend. She's never told Clark who his father is. Clark figures he'sas close to an expert on time travel as they've got, because he writesStargate fanfic. Not even close to being the ladies' man that the otherguys fancy themselves to be, he's the closest thing to an adult in thebunch as the older guys decide to have a 2nd shot at drunken frat-boybehavior. He keeps warning them about the butterfly effect and not tochange anything that they remember from before. Needless to say, if anyof them followed his advice, there'd be no movie. There is much raunchiness and what I guess is supposed to pass fortowel-snapping guy humor. Some of it is mildly funny, but this wassupposed to be a comedy, and boorishness needs a tighter leash thanthis to successfully tickle my funny bone. Women are generally treatedas disposable sex objects; altho Nick is deeply devoted to his wife, webarely see her on screen, but bimbettes are everywhere.Chevy Chase wanders thru from time to time costumed as a hot-tubrepairman, dispensing delphic advice to no apparent purpose. Cusackgets above-the-title billing but was the dullest of the lot, mainlymoping around doing a basset imitation. Corddry was evidentlygreen-lighted to go over the top in the 1st 5 minutes and keep ongoing. Robinson and Duke give fairly sympathetic performances, buttheir characters seem out of place and mismatched with the others, which could have been played for yuks but just felt awkward.Still, the movie had its moments, so it ends up at the bottom of my "upto you" range. |

Derivative, clumsy, self-conscious, trite - need I go on?Derivative, clumsy, self-conscious, trite. Rarely funny - or even amusing. The movie attempts to combine Back to the Future with The Hangover and achieves something that's not worth watching. John Cusack's charm helps make it almost bearable. Clark Duke isn't bad, either. Crispin Glover's talents are utterly wasted. |

Very predictable and Unoriginal.Very low-brow comedy is not always a bad thing, it just happens to be so when the plot is wholly unoriginal and lacks any deeper quality beyond trying to pay tribute to an earlier era of movie making without maintaining its own identity inside of that picture. What this movie lacks is respect for the intelligence of the audience, anyone with an IQ over two digits will find the connections between scenes and overall plot lines frighteningly amateur and sophomoric. Sure, there might be a few laughs for some, but the film itself is mind numbingly lacking in comedic purpose beyond cheep thrills and ridiculous fantasies by the nerdy men writers of how to interact with the opposite sex. Very mind numbing, but beyond that, also cliche and predictable. Borrows heavily from Back to the Future without being subtle about it. |

If you want a few laughs....You might want to find another movie. This movie was filled with dumb frat jokes and gross scenes for your 14 year old (who is 35 now) to laugh at the butt jokes. If it were not for my gorgeous date who kept saying, it has to get better (and it did not) I would have walked out for a refund in the first 5 minutes....See this movie at your own risk and waste of funds.. |

HeartlessI'm not sure when it started, but the mix of feigned airheaded andhighly sarcastic 'humor' dominating most comedy films today is wearingthin on me. It's laid on so thick in Hot Tub Time Machine, I almostwant to give the creators the benefit of the doubt for a scathingparody of the phenomenon, but I can't quite make myself believe it.The movie is a fairly cookie cutter back-in-time affair, but unlikemost comedy in that vein, this film seems to have a real contempt forits subject matter. Rather than seeking to establish a settingrealistic to the 80s era it unfolds in, Hot Tub Time Machine settlesfor a few hair band soundtrack standards, a few token costume nods anda handful of visual references to the movies of the era. However, thereis nothing of the feeling of the time as the film continues along theusual modern trend of screamed obscenity and low brow physical humor. The actors are irrelevant as their cardboard cutout characters neverget developed to any significant degree. The story, even if written inparody, is a limp cliché from start to finish. The jokes are tired.Even the soundtrack plays like a 80s party hits template. This movie ultimately has the feel of a bad idea, badly executed thatgot reluctantly tossed out for scrap DVD sales. As someone who grew upin the 80s, I didn't find it even tokenly fun as it really seems todespise its subject matter. On its own merit, it doesn't even measureas a half-hearted attempt. |

For all its ridiculousness and asshole-ness, it's still fun and enjoyable"Hot Tub Time Machine" is actually quite enjoyable. The ridiculoustitle and its obvious concept turned me off at first but it turned outto be a lot of fun.As a fan of John Cusack, it was pleasing to see his character, Adam, reminiscent of Rob from "High Fidelity" (2000), especially when hisgirlfriend moved out on him at the very beginning. "She basicallycalled me an asshole, like I'm a narcissistic asshole." His friendreplies, "Yeah, she has a point though." The movie does spend asignificant amount of time with the guys being assholes and callingeach other assholes, but it is probably the bestguys-acting-as-assholes movie.Three middle-aged men are despondent with the sad state of their lives,Rob Corddry being the worst of the bunch, is in the hospital withanother not-suicide attempt (beause if he really wanted to, he wouldkick ass at killing himself), and Cusack and Craig Robinson are calledin as the only people who could be described as his friends. Believe itor not, but the movie's opening with all this unhappiness is quitefunny and real at the same time. To cheer themselves up, they are offto a ski resort where they used to hang out in the 80s. I think we allknow why it's called "Hot Tub Time Machine".As ridiculous and inane as this all sounds, there is a lot of cleverhumour in the movie, and the characters, as much as they are assholes, they are also real and genuine. I know them and that just makes themall the more fun. I was annoyed with the inclusion of Jacob (ClarkDuke) as Cusack's nephew because I think one Jonah Hill is enough.Follow my blog Napierslogs' Movie Expositions athttp://napierslogs.blogspot.com |

So disappointingThis movie was a big disappointment. I ordered for my husband's birthday and we watched it immediately. WE did not laugh out loud once!! We both love the 80's and thought we would appreciate that aspect of the movie but kept waiting for the movie to be funny. Nowhere near as funny as the Hangover and Superbad. CAn't believe the reviews it got on Amazon. Don't waste your money-rent it!! |

Back to the Future meets The HangoverScreenwriters where sitting in there office one day, and thought let'scombine Back to the Future and The Hangover together, and the resultsare Hot Tub Time Machine. The story begins with three friends in there early 40's, Adam(JohnCusack), Nick(Craig Robinson), and Lou(Rob Corddry), who all leadpretty boring and uneventful lives. One day decide to take a trip to aold ski resort, where they had the time of there lives when they whereteenagers. Jacob(Clark Duke) Adam's nephew comes along for the ride.Find a hot tub, and have a drunken good time in the hot tub. But thenext day things seem different, everybody seems to be dressed like it'sthe 1980's, only to discover that they have traveled back in time to1986, in the bodies of there teenage selves, except for Jacob whodoesn't exist yet. Will they change the past for better or worse, andis Jacob gonna get erased out of existence? This film is not for everyone, but if you loved The Hangover, then i'llbet you'll love Hot Tub Time Machine. All the actors really shine inthere own way. And great guest stars like Crispen Glover and ColleteWolf, also shine in there own way. Not to mention Chevy Chase also ismemorable. It's a fun time at the movies, not a game changer, but afilm you can laugh with your friends. Just a laugh out loud film. |

Suspend belief, or you won't like itBefore I begin my review, I will say up front that if you cannotsuspend belief when it comes to watching a movie, Hot Tub Time Machineis not for you. If you can suspend belief, read on.Three adult friends, Adam, Nick, and Lou, have not had the lives theythought they would have at their age. After Lou almost dies at home, the trio decide to take a trip to a winter resort where they stayed in1986 and have some overdue fun. Along with Adam's nephew Jacob, theyarrive to find that the place is nothing like it once was. The four of them find a hot tub outside their room and decide to try itout. A drinking binge ensues and some of what they are consuming spillsonto the controls of the hot tub. After waking up in the tub, they get out and notice that a lot ofpeople have shown up in the area, and everything looks like it did inthe 1980s.None of the quartet seems to get what's happening until they finallyrealize they have traveled back in time to 1986, the very same year, and day, that they were at the resort. Of course, they want to go home, but they also wonder what would happen if certain events are altered. Will history repeat itself? The acting is good here. John Cusack plays the good guy character likehe usually does. Rob Corddry is the standout of the bunch, however, asthe obnoxious Lou. For anyone who has seen any of the American Piemovies, think of Lou as an older version of Stifler. Chevy Chasedoesn't have a lot to do as the repairman of the hot tub who appearsand disappears in no time. The script is very reliant on one-liners and plenty of profanity. So ifyou have an issue with the latter, this is not recommended for you. Forall of you that grew up in the 80s, the film is loaded with referencesto that time, and I really liked that aspect of the film. You will geta sense of nostalgia by watching this. I sure did. This movie isn't bad at all, just far-fetched. It does make you laughmore than once, though, so it is worth a look. But I did not find it tobe as funny as others thought. |

Not to be taken seriously, a good all round fun filmAs a huge comedy its been a while since seeing a movie that can make melaugh beyond a slight giggle, and this movie has served me well, itsgood to see well known actors take part in this film, and although iwas too young to recall the 80's it does capture the moment very welland how it all worked back then without our privileges today. a worldlacking what we need today and how it still worked, but i don't want togive too much away.there were some moments that kept you curious in terms of "whats goingto happen" so be prepared.i don't think it was the directors intention to make it worth of anaward, but i welcoming idea to entertain and boy it does. |

Time Travel ConundrumWatching Hot Tub Time Machine today I learned a little about what someof John Cusack's favorite films and television shows might be. Cusackhad a hand in producing this film and I could count bits in the plotfrom films like Pleasantville and The Final Countdown and fromtelevision series Quantum Leap and Twice In A Lifetime. I'm suresomeone else may spot others. But of the group I've cited, they're allbetter than the product here.Cusack, Craig Robinson, and Rob Corddry are three forty somethingfriends whose lives haven't quite turned out as they hoped. They decideto take a trip back to a ski lodge where they spent some happier timesas youths. The ski lodge has also seen better days, but the guystogether with Cusack's nephew Clark Duke all decide to relax in a hottub and before they know it they're back in the Eighties and the age ofReagan. They look at themselves in the mirror and they see themselvesas they were back in those days. There's also a mysterious hot tubrepairman played by Chevy Chase whose character is taken straight fromPleasantville and the part Don Knotts had.Hot Tub Time Machine does have some funny moments, but the plot doesbog down in some truly juvenile situations. It has of course the usualtime travel conundrum problems that the protagonists in these films allface. If your humor has that kind of bent to it, than this is the filmfor you. |

It must be some sort of…pretty funny film actually.Director Steve Pink and the hot-under-the-collar suits at MGM puttogether a collection of relatively unknown actors, bar John Cusack, throw in a plot so ridiculous it could only work in a comedy and createa film consisting of as many jokes as it does pop culture references tothe utterly tasteless universe of 1980s America. Hot Tub Time Machine follows three adult friends and a younger nephew, who embark on a guys' weekend away to a ski resort they have fondmemories of. Upon arrival, they are heartbroken to learn it is now adump, so they decide to make the most of it by getting wasted in a hottub and, through some negligent spilling of alcohol into the tub'scircuitry system, they inexplicably end up in 1986 (come on, it happensto the best of us).The film employs a steady stream of both slapstick and wordplay jokes, interplayed with a heavy dose of crude, sexual humour straight out ofthe Apatow handbook. If that's not what you consider funny in a comedy,I regret to inform you that you will not find this film at allhumorous. Few jokes are either original or elaborately constructed, butthey do achieve their task of making the audience laugh aloud, whichseems to be occurring less and less frequently in cinemas these days.Steve Pink does well, however, to harness the power of one of comediccinema's strongest tools when used correctly: the running joke. Withoutgiving too much away, it involves Crispin Glover's unfortunate hotelbellhop who seems to avoid imminent danger until the final scene, andhis desperation to avoid said danger in a faulty elevator makes for thebiggest laugh of the entire movie. Certainly, every main actor involved in this film is to be commended.Cusack enjoys making minor but obvious references to his past glory asa superstar of yesteryear. Clark Duke, for all his inexperience, doesjustice to his role as the token socially awkward teenager and RobCorrdry steals every scene as the unpleasant, self-absorbed alcoholic. And with every supporting role he notches up, Craig Robinson pushes hisclaim as a comedic lead actor. His timing and delivery in this film inparticular make for some very funny moments that don't involve someonegetting injured in some way.The film quickly becomes a reference-fest as soon as the Second Actcommences. Lovers of 80s icons will appreciate the good-natured digs atfilms such as The Shining, Red Dawn, Back To The Future and a plethoraof John Hughes classics. Where somebody like Tarantino will make theeffort to conceal the majority of his allusions to add intertextualdepth to his film, HTTM ensured every audience member makes theintended connection to the aforementioned films.Of course, I always say that there is only one aspect of life moresubjective than film, and that is comedy within a film. Everything I'vementioned as a positive about HTTM may be disregarded by those who havedifferent tastes in humour. 'Not that there's anything wrong with that.'*There's nothing I love more than a bit of feedback, good or bad.
