It's uncomplicated fun!I went to see this film on a Sunday afternoon, 4 o'clock. I walked intothe theatre expecting only a few scattered seats to be occupied byladies of a certain age, but to my surprise ànd contentment the theatrewas filled for about 90% with both genders and all ages. And why not? Ihave read some article in some movie magazine saying that this issupposedly a film with a relatively small budget aimed at a relativelysmall audience (aforementioned ladies) but why would that be? I couldnot have been the only one in the audience who has no similarities withthe film's characters: I am not nearing 60 years of age, I am notdivorced, I have no children, I am not having an affair. Yet I do havea sense of humour and that is really all that is required when watching"It's Complicated".Because boy, this movie is funny as hell. And I was not the only one tothink so: both genders and all ages were bursting with laughterthroughout the movie. The jokes were really good, the actors evenbetter. Meryl Streep was excellent (but hey, has anybody ever seen lessthan excellence of this lady?), Alec Baldwin was solid, Steve Martinshould really take on more serious roles because he's pretty good at itand let's not forget John Krasinski who has a small but very cute andvery funny part in this movie. This is definitely one to watch. Perfect if you are in a good mood andperhaps even better if you are in a bad one -- you will leave thetheatre with a huge smile on your face. |

It's Complicated is as middle-of-the-road as you can get. It doesn't even attempt to break new ground. |

Even Streep doesn't seem to know what to do with her character except laugh -- the only person, living or celluloid, in the theater doing so. |

It is indeed complicated ...The movie as it is, wouldn't have deserved more than 5/10 points (maybe6). Which isn't really bad, but with the actors this elevates to ahigher level. Meryl Streep and Alec Baldwin are really great in thisand Krasinski, although he only has a small part, steals the show inalmost all of his scenes. He is really funny in this and quitedifferent from the character he is portraying in "Away we go" (a man weshould be looking out for perhaps? Definitely!) You can see how much fun everyone has and although the story evolvesexactly how would predict it will (after a few minutes into the film),the performances keep you interested. A fun and light movie, thatshouldn't be taken too seriously and can be a nice watch for a couple(to be) ;o) |

Fun but makes you hungry!Krasinski is really funny. Nice acting and comic timing in his limitedscenes. Martin, Baldwin and Streep all have great roles too.there are so many funny scenes with the pot smoking, with the lovemaking, with Krasinski in the hotel. Streep is one of the bestactresses I have ever seen.If you are looking for an adult comedy which treats older people withrespect and kindness. I think you will enjoy this movie.More sentences? Really? I think I should go now!Still? How about now? |

It's NOT Complicated, It's AWFUL!!This review is from: It's Complicated (DVD) Should have been called "It's Hairbrained." I don't know why I bought this film. Maybe someone mentioned that they liked it or maybe because I often like Meryl Streep films and like Steve Martin. I had just recently bought 2 of Streep's films. "Julie and Julia", the story of Julia Child with Streep and Amy Adams which I loved. And then there was "The Devil Wears Prada." Streep and Anne Hathaway. A Delicious film! And uh, then there was "Heart Burn" which I bought a good while ago, but you can't go wrong with Streep, Nicholson and Nora Ephron whose films I usually like. But, oh, this film! It was awful. It was very boring, and it was stupid. And who on earth wants to see an old couple having sex, especially with Baldin's fat ass sticking out. Jeez, was that ever the worst! I threw it out. |

A Nutshell Review: It's ComplicatedWhile having dinner with a friend the other night, I had unwittinglyeavesdropped (well the tables were so close) on the table of two girlsbeside ours, talking about how their friend's fiancé failed to get aring to propose that was worth 3 months of his salary. Who makes theserules anyway? And it is these crazy social (if I may call it that)rules that you'll hear more of in the film, that makes it quite thechuckle on one hand, and also bewildering on the other, thatwriter-director Nancy Myers takes massages into the narrative . It'sComplicated, indeed. This is not about proposals or costs of rings, but about social stigmaand expectations that creep up on couples no matter how young or oldthey are. The story gets set years after a couple's divorce, stemmingprimarily from the husband's infidelity, though all of the stakeholderscan still get on in quite civil terms. You know the classic tale wherehusband leaves wife for a hotter, younger, better proportioned womanthat gets complicated (that has to be to self-fulfil its title) whenthe new wife runs off, gets pregnant with someone else's child, andcomes back to the man again. And the man now harbours thoughts aboutgetting back together again with his ex-wife because his current one isdriving him nuts no thanks to that generation gap, and the constantpressure for him to perform, sexually that is.Yes don't be a prude, because some of the best lines and scenes stemfrom the sexually charged ones, that may raise plenty of eyebrows athow daringly comical it can actually become. I think it's one of thefirst chick flick films that I watched with a full house of women ofall ages, and there was actual clapping and lap slapping during momentsof hilarity. Much of the credit goes to the strength of Nancy Myer'sstory, which just sprawls and yet her direction managed to keep a tightrein on the narrative pace, though there were a number of disposablecharacters introduced whom you think might last the distance butconveniently dropped in the first act after they tell the audience howto react, that having an affair with your ex-husband is not that wronga wrong, especially sweet when you have a chance to get back at thewoman who used to be the third party.Meryl Streep continues in her reel occupation as a chef, and as anelderly woman whose children have all grown up, she finds herselflonely despite being successful in her career. This meant anopportunity to re-enter the dating scene especially with a potential MrAvailable in Architect Adam (Steve Martin in an unfunny, serious rolewhere laughter only comes when he's puffing a joint), only to findherself falling back, albeit physically, in good terms with herex-husband Jake (Alec Baldwin who really has piled on the kilos). Itfeels a little bit wrong where a divorce and breakup doesn't seem allthat permanent, and worse of all having to find oneself rediscoveringall the positive points during the times where things were still rosy.I particularly liked a point of discussion with a very interestingschool of thought that all of an ex-couple's differences might be goneover time like a push of the delete button, that the relationship willbe relegated to just ordinary friends, and like friends, can pick upfrom where you last left off, paving the way for a reconciliation. In some ways, this senior citizen love story ponders upon the What Ifsabout the ones whom we had unwittingly allowed to go, and it's quitepro-family as well with its scenes of a wonderful family if it hadchosen to stick together, to regret forsaking everything for a momentof folly that one has to live with. In fact, Nancy Meyers succeeds inher well thought-through story in making you want to root for Streep'sJane and Jake to put aside their differences and get together, despiteknowing what each did to the other through their reminiscence of thepast. Both actors also bring plenty to the table with their excellentperformances, and always never too shy to play up on the physicaleffects of aging too (check out Streep's left eyebrow!)Nonetheless it's chick flick territory through and through, but weavedwith agreeable, enlightening even, concepts that could be grasped byanyone who are currently in, have been or will be in a relationship.Just lighten up on those illogical, unwritten rules, that would reallymake things too complicated, for nothing. |

IDIOTICThis was one of the stupidest movies I've seen in a long time. Glad I didn't buy it, but got it from the library. Meryl Streep is too good an actress to have participated in such nonsense. The ONLY good thing about it was that it was about a couple in their 50's. Most movies are about these 20-something twits, like no one over the age of 25 could possibly fall in love. Alec Baldwin is totally disgusting. |

It's not all that complicated (as a movie)."It's Complicated" is marketed as yet another movie in the "maturepeople discovering things about themselves through funny, awkwardsituations in a down-to-earth but heart warming fashion" vein. Does itdeliver? Well, yes, it is not badly done, but it is also quiteformulaic, and if you have watched the last couple of movies with DianeKeaton as a woman discovering herself after meta-pause, there are a lotof situations that will not be all that surprising. On the plus-side, the acting is good. Streep is funnier than thescript, adding wonderful mimic to several scenes, and Baldwin is a joyto watch making fun of his aging, not-so- well-kept body. He and Streepare well cast opposite each other, never stealing the scenes forthemselves. I am also now officially a fan of John Krasinski whose workin "Away We Go" was wonderful. He highlights his comic talent in asmall, but charming role as the boyfriend of one of Streep andBaldwin's daughters. Steve Martin is a really good actor that isunfortunately too seldomly used for quasi-serious roles as here. (Lasttime I remember him doing that was in Lawrence Kasdan's bleak "GrandCanyon".) He is an interesting choice for a character that is notun-funny, but not hilarious either, in a movie that is, taken as awhole, a comedy. The film did succeed in making me laugh several times (although not allthe time) and for that I would always credit a movie with a grade aboveaverage or higher, when the funny moments are intentional, as they arehere. But I am staying exactly at 6 - there are just a bit too manypredictable scenes and stylized female coffee-table whimsiness packedinto this offering. |

Loved it!I liked this movie more than I thought I would. Perhaps because myparents are divorced, perhaps because I watched it with my mother andwas trying to see it through her eyes. I thought it flowed well and wasentertaining, touching and both light and of substance. Nancy Meyers, who also directed and wrote "The Holiday" and "Something's Gotta Give",is very good at this genre and with Meryl Streep as the lead, canhardly go wrong.Playing Jane, a beautiful, professionally fulfilled, divorcée in herlate fifties, Meryl brings such an intensity and realism to hercharacter that she truly makes and carries the film. One can not onlyunderstand but feel her loneliness as her kids all slowly leave her, goto college, graduate etc. Alec Baldwin is excellent too as her postmid-life crisis ex-husband, Jake, who after marrying a much younger, usually only half dressed, woman named Agness, is clearly unhappy andcannot tolerate for much longer her snapping her fingers at him whenshe needs him to clean something or make love to her at ovulation time.An affair begins between the two as Jake tries to find refuge in Jane, with whom he feels back at home, both physically and emotionally. Shemakes him good home-made ice cream, they have nice conversations andmost of all- besides the great sex- he enjoys the peace and quiet.Their chemistry is great and believable but unfortunately for him,Meryl has another admirer, her "nerdy" architect, Steve Martin, alsowell cast, though purposely in a more minor, background role. He takesher out on nice dates, has also recently gone through a divorce, and isvery much smitten. Jane needs to choose between the two. She isdefinitely happy, glowing and re-living, but feels very torn betweenthe familiar with her now very needy ex-husband and the appeal ofsomething fresh and new.The themes of divorce, love, family and relationships in general arevery well treated in this film. I thought a comment made by Meryl'scharacter about why she thought her marriage with Baldwin ended wasparticularly poignant- she said it wasn't all his fault and that shehad given up on the relationship long before he cheated, using it as anexcuse to end things. I am sure many couples find themselves in similarsituations, where cheating is often a product not just a cause oftrouble. One touch that bothered me was that I felt the children were too niceand too forgiving to a father who left their mother for a woman halfher age. Whenever they saw him pulling up in his Porsche they screamed"Daddy! Daddy!" and were overjoyed. I thought that was fake andsimplified and there could have been at least one sibling who wouldhave a bit of lingering hurt and resentment. A special mention for boththe performance and character of John Krasinski who plays the role ofHarley, a perfect boyfriend to the eldest daughter, but also aconfidant who sees many things he shouldn't and reacts very comicallyand naturally. There are tons of funny, lots of real and even some sad scenes, butthere is also quite a bit of predictability. I nevertheless very muchenjoyed this romantic comedy and thought it was one of the best of itskind that I have seen recently. My rating: 7.5 Fabio's: 7 My mom's: 7 Total score out of 30: 21.5 Formore daily reviews please visit http://paulinasmovies.blogspot.com |

It's Very FunWe watched IT'S COMPLICATED the other night, with multiple generations in attendance. And everyone laughed out loud. IT'S COMPLICATED is a light-hearted, refreshing romantic comedy that will entertain you, brighten your spirit, and make you smile. In IT'S COMPLICATED, Jane and Jack have been divorced for 10 years now, and they have finally come to a sort of workable truce. They have three nearly grown kids together. Jane has a very successful restaurant, and Jake is happily married to the younger woman with whom he cheated. Or is he? Unacustomed time alone together at their youngest son's college graduation leads to an unexpected night in bed together. This one-night-stand blossoms into a full blown affair, which leaves Jane, Jake, and the entire audience wondering if old wounds can be healed and old love rekindled. While the plot of IT'S COMPLICATED really isn't (it's really pretty formulaic), the acting is truly magnificant. Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin, and Steve Martin imbue their characters with life; they truly jump off the screen. Meryl Streep is luminous - funny, warm, gorgeous, sentimental, sympathetic, sensual, and sexy as all get out. Wow, Meryl, please keep proving that life does not end at 40 and that Hollywood is not just for starlets. Alec Baldwin is excellent as Jake - a confused, aging little boy who wants whatever it is that he doesn't have. A near perfect role for Alec Baldwin. And Steve Martin as Adam, Jane's hope-to-be boyfriend, gives one of his best performances in years. The three of them have superb chemistry, and that alone makes this a 5 star film. The supporting cast are equally up to the task, and add depth and nuance to this film.IT'S COMPLICATED is a delightful way to spend a cozy evening cuddled up with the one you love. IT'S COMPLICATED brings the entertainment, the humor, and the romance. You just need to provide the popcorn and the fluffy blanket. |

a movie for my grandmother and a "comedy" about affairs destroying families with small childrenThis is the kind of movie that I expect my grandmother to love. It hasa rich family, despite no one actually working, with perfect childrenand forbidden love. I have watched the movie at a sneak preview andfound myself irritated by several extremely cheesy scenes. There are only two scenes, which have funny elements, so it's notactually a comedy but a serious film trying to be realistic. The filmunfortunately fails to be realistic ranging from inconsistencies in theglobal storyline down to the individual behaviour of most characters.Furthermore, the movie expects the audience to find amoral conductacceptable, which includes destroying someone else's family partlymotivated by jealousy. In general the movie may be insulting to those who were either born ina family destroyed by an unnecessary divorce or an affair, are notwhite, not beautiful, or are not rich despite actually working hard, being responsible and being considerate. The film may especially pleasethose who think that by looking at a beautiful and rich family theysomehow get to share their prosperity.Couples might feel highly discomforted by the movie's remarkablypositive stance on cheating the partner and not even bothering aboutone's own children. I could well imagine that this movie sparklesarguments among couples that might even be consequential with thesesensitive topics involved.I agree that the movie can be summarized as "chick flick". Still thanksto a plenty of scenes about the love making of old people (who wouldnot want to see their parents having sex?) the film is R-rated. |

Refreshingly mature, funny and endearing with a terrific cast and razor sharp dialogue. Meryl Streep sizzles in a sexy, bold and honest performance. It's an intelligent American romcom with a very French sensibility. |

Awful!I saw this at the movie theater and did not like it! There were a few laughs, but Meryl Streep's character was smarmy and condescending and awful. The sessions with her friends almost made me hate women; they were so insipid. Alec Baldwin, whom I love on 30 Rock, and Steve Martin, usually hilarious or at least entertaining, underplayed too much until he was playing his character stoned, and that was a pretty cliche setup. Also these actors, usually good-looking, appeared so unattractive. What happened? Alec's character was probably supposed to show some wear, but the angles from which he was filmed did not favor him at all. No one could have been more pampered or more "perfect" than Meryl's character; she didn't even have to let her croissants rise. Only good thing about the movie was the guy who plays Jim on The Office, but it seemed like he was in the wrong movie. Only other good thing was I saw it with a friend. |

LIKE FINE WINE, STREEP IMPROVES WITH AGELike a fine wine, Meryl Streep improves with age. I've been watching her movies for years, and when I study her and her characterizations, what I see is that she steps into the characters' lives and becomes one with them.In It's Complicated, she portrays a divorced woman, living on her own for ten years; she has created her own business and is doing just fine, thank you very much! But on the occasion of her son's college graduation, with the concomitant family reunion, she and her ex-husband (Alec Baldwin) find themselves at the same bar beforehand and decide to share a meal. One thing leads to another and they connect again. Their lively and passionate "affair" lasts the weekend, and when she goes home again, she thinks that's it. But he pursues her. Showing up and sidling into her life all over again. There's only one problem. He's married to someone else.Throughout this movie, we are treated to humor, nostalgia, and a mix of poignant moments that almost leave us wanting these two to reconnect. But then there's the appealing architect (Steve Martin), with whom she starts to connect as well. The dilemma carries us through the film, and in the end, we are left considering the possibilities.I will enjoy watching this one over and over, just as I have loved every movie in which this wonderful actress has starred.Five stars alone do not do this movie justice. |

Really funny movie to me.I thought this movie was really great. It appealed to me a 40 something mom/wife. I think they could have done more with Steve Martin's character, but he wasn't the star of this movie anyway. Alec Baldwin did a great job with his character, as if it was written for him and I have always loved Meryl Streep. If you just want a movie to watch and have a good time doing so, watch this movie. |
