A great black movie on the theme of cat and mice.

The gunrunner Ordell Robbie use Jackie Brown's services fortransferring the money that he has in Mexico for his traffics to hisresidence at L.A. Jackie Brown is an air hostess who works in a shabbyaircraft company because she was formerly condemned for drug traffic. An Ordell's accomplice denounces Jackie Brown to police and she isarrested, but Ray Nicolette, the federal policeman suggests to her toworks for the police in order to trap Ordell. This one discovers thetrap and thinks to murder Jackie, but she reacts with a gun she hadstolen to Max, another Ordell's accomplice. She negotiates a new planwith Ordell in order to do the transfer of his money. But, in fact, shehas in mind to steal Ordell'dollars with Max's complicity to go away inforeign country. The movie is very well made and acted and is verypleasant to see.

One of 1997's best-like Out of Sight was in 1998.

This was one of the best movies of 1997.It can get a little dull after watching a few times, but when I first saw it I was smiling from the beginning to the end. This movie is not a well paced as Out of Sight, which was also one of last years best movies, but it is still terrific. I agree that this movie was not a disappontment. I believe that people simply did not care about it like they did the previous Elmore Leanard adaptation. This movie just suffered some sort of backlash or something because it is highly rated in the critic's corner of the Atlanta Journal Constitution and it got a B+ average in Entertainment Weekly's critical mass. Why would this have happened if it was a bad movie. Could anyone answer that? Read Roger Ebert's review because he got this movie right. It really doesn't matter what the other critcs thought because it is a good movie anyway.

Disappointing copy of Pulp Fiction

After Pulp Fiction, Tarantino was solid gold. Much like PeterBogdanovich before him, it seemed like everything he touched was gold. However, he did something that even the biggest Tarantino fans won'tquite forgive him for: Jackie Brown. This film, unlike Pulp Fiction, isnot so inventive, is slow paced, the characters are much lessinteresting and apart from a few interesting moments, the film justdrags on. However, it is just another version of Pulp Fiction. While itwould have been wiser to changing style completely, Jackie brown showedthe world that he was human, and that perhaps his success had limitedhis abilities. Much like Bogdanovich."Jackie can tell me any story that comes into her pretty little head, just so long as at the end of that story she hands me my motherfuckingmoney."

Entertaining

Entertaining entry in the Tarantino canon. It never quite lives up tothe promise of its stylish opening-credits sequence (could any merestory live up to that thrilling tracking shot? Who is this person? What's going to happen to her?), and in places it again shows thedirector's casual disregard for human life (or for character life, anyway). But all in all it's a fine entertainment, well acted(especially by Robert DeNiro in his small role), believablycharacterized (the romance element is particularly nice), andsuspensefully plotted. And, as usual with Tarantino, the best part ofall is the vibrant, chattering screenplay, yet another virtuosoexercise in language. 7 out of 10.

A poor follow-up to Pulp Fiction

Quentin Tarantino`s third movie is not in the same class as his previoustwo(Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction). The movie is about Jackie Brown, a stewardess, who gets caught smuggling. The movie doesn`t have the good characters and cool dialogue seen inTarantino`s others films, and is therefore nowhere near as good as hisprevious films. The amount of violence has also decreased dramaticallysince Pulp Fiction, and violence is one of the main ingredients inTarantino`s movies. Overall, Jackie Brown is quite lacking in allareas.4/10

Far from Tarantino's best work, but there are some special acting performances which make this a worthwhile film, although it does not qualify as a "must see."

It's difficult to distance "Jackie Brown" from the earlier works of directorQuentin Tarantino. Compared to "Pulp Fiction" and "Reservoir Dogs" it fallsdown at least a couple of pegs. Tarantino's characters usually live in thecriminal fringe of society, but most can evoke some sympathy from anaudience. This was not true of "Jackie Brown" at least not for me. In thetitle role, Pam Grier gives us very little outside of attitude ... she mightbe in trouble, but she's not taking anyone's guff ... and I didn't feel thatwas enough. I don't think you can base a quality film on someone whose onlyobvious attribute is that she can vamp through an airport like Tina Turner(who, by the way, would have been a better fit for the character). RobertForster, as the bail bondsman, gave an excellent performance. He validatedGrier's character by subtly playing off her affected sassiness. Forstergave the audience a character to cheer for. Samuel L. Jackson made aterrific villain, but I couldn't stand that little braid he had growing offhis chin (was that supposed to be a beard?). Robert Deniro showed, onceagain, why he is one of the best-paid stars in Hollywood. He played thepart of a basically useless thug, a man without a conscience or charm, butmade him funny and charming, in a brutish kind of way. Deniro made thecharacter interesting, even though it was only a small part. They shouldshow clips of "Jackie Brown" in Acting 101 classes for Deniro's performancealone. It is too bad, for the sake of this film as a whole, that Deniro'scharacter was such a small part. Two of the best scenes in this movie arebetween Deniro and Jackson, in a panel truck, and between Deniro and BridgetFonda, in a parking lot. "Jackie Brown" gets bogged down in the scenesbetween Grier and Michael Keaton and Michael Bowen, as two narcoticspolicemen. The ordinarily likeable Keaton is out of his element here, trying to play a tough but well-meaning cop. He isn't able to establish anychemistry between himself and Grier. As the hero, Forster did a much betterjob of that, and Jackson as well, as the anti-hero. Fonda is believable asJackson's "blonde surfer girl". You see flashes of Quentin Tarantino'smagic touch in "Jackie Brown" but mostly this film is remarkable only for afew very special acting performances amidst some questionable castingchoices.

The Delfonics

The is a great movie based on the novel "Rum Punch" who's main character is a caucasian stewardess working for an arms and drug dealer. She transfers funds from the U.S. to Mexico. Quentin Tarantino's homage to the blaxplotation films of the 70's is his vision here casting noone other than the Queen herself Pam Grier in the title role. The movie's dialogue is key here, there is no big action and no big surprises just great performances by the cast and to cheer on the heroine of the film no other. Smart, Funny, and music by " THE DELFONICS". U DIG!

I love this man

"Jackie Brown" was the first Tarantino film I ever saw. I saw it on anedited for television thing, so a lot of it was cut out. I also remembered Ididn't enjoy it. I thought it was boring and dull to watch. But then Iwatched "Reservoir Dogs" and "Pulp Fiction". They are in my top fivefavorite films of all time. So I decided to give "Jackie Brown" another try.It must have been because it was edited or something. I loved it the secondtime. Tarantino has always had a great deal of respect for actors. This isobvious because of all of his films. The casting of John Travolta was astroke of genious. Hollywood had long given up on him, but Quentin new noone could be Vincent Vega quite like he could. And he was right. And now inthis, the casting of Pam Grier, one of the pioneering blaxploitation starsof the early 70's, now to star as an aging gangster. That was castinggenious. There is a moment in "Jackie Brown" that I find incredible. It is not atalking scene, or violent scene. It is the scene where Ordell (Samuel L.Jackson) is sitting in a car with Robert De Niro. Ordell is so mad about anissue (I'll never tell) a vain just bulges out of his head. It is so creepyand Samuel L. Jackson proves why he is one of the greatest actors out thereright now. The intensity in his eyes is so real and powerful. I am also a huge fan of the scene that is shown three times. To anyonewho hasn't seen the film, that might not sound right. But believe me itworks so well, it is scary. Amazing directing by Tarantino. I cannot reccomend this film enough. I think everyone should watch andenjoy this film. 10/10

Read The Book Rum Punch The Movie was better

The Book Rum Punch by Elmore Lenoard was completely different than thismovie. The best things Tarrantino did was switch the location fromSouth Florida/Cayman Islands to L.A./Cabo and switch the lead characterJackie Burke from a blonde 40ish white woman to a 40ish black ladyJackie Brown. When you read the book its confusing why Lenoard made thelead character white because the story flow isn't that good. Tarrantinoalso removed a couple other sidelines from the book which all in allmade the movie much better than the book. Pam Grier in a way bringselements of all her 1970s characters into Jackie which if you liked herearly work you'll love this. Jackie in many ways is sort of like FoxyBrown over 40 and out of options but still with her brain. Ordellplayed by Samuel Jackson underestimates Jackie and it costs him big.

A more sedate Tarantino

This is not the usual Tarantino film in that there is not much action and not the usual buckets of blood, but it is a very good movie. Samuel L. Jackson plays a gun-seller with many small-time crooks working for him like Robert DeNiro, Bridget Fonda and Pam Grier. Pam Grier works as a flight attendant on a small airline that flies to Mexico which is where Jackson's money is hidden. Grier gets arrested by an ATF agent while carrying $50,000 of Jackson's money. Along with her bail bondsman Robert Forster, Grier concocts a plan where she has both the ATF and Jackson believing she is working with them. This is a well written and acted movie. It is also a testament to how well-made it is that while this a long movie and is very slow-paced, I wasn't bored as I usually would be with a film that took its time like this one.

Will This Movie Be Good From Tarentino?

The movie is odd-looking in ways from watching the previews and the movie has some pretty good actors as well!Starring Pam Grier, Samuel L. Jackson, Robert Forster, Michael Keaton, Robert De Niro, and Bridget Fonda, this movie is about Grier, as a flight attendant who has been trafficking in hot money for Jackson (a low-life). When caught, she plays all the angles she can think of to keep herself out of jail. This causes everyone to be on thin ice!So far, this movie looks decent and I can't really say that it will be Quentin Tarentino's best film until I have seen it!

Solid film, brilliant script

Once again, Quentin Tarantino proves why he is arguably the best screenwriter in Hollywood. Although the story behind Jackie Brown was adaptedfrom an Elmore Leonard novel, Tarantino uses the already existingcharacters to his advantage, capitalizing on their traits to andpersonalities to spew forth Tarnatino-like dialogue. This is the typeof crime film that should please any fan of the genre: it's verydetailed, possesses excellent dialogue, and has an intricate plot thatmakes sitting through the 2 1/2 hr. film well worth the wait. JackieBrown is a gritty, straightforward film that packs a punch and ishighly recommended.

"When You Absolutely, Positively Got to..."

Perhaps I'm just being non-conformist, but I prefer "Jackie Brown" to "Pulp Fiction." Not that I didn't love "Pulp," and it was certainly the more groundbreaking of the two films, but there's something about the social milieu and style of "Jackie Brown" that makes me want to revisit it more often. Maybe it's the ensemble work of a great cast; maybe it's the leisurely pace; maybe it's the humor that simultaneously undercuts and sets up the moments of violence; maybe it's Pam Grier's winning performance as a flight attendant who outsmarts the good guys and the bad guys at the same time; maybe it's Robert Forster's comeback portrayal of a weathered bail bondsman; or maybe it's Tarantino's underlying commentary on the crime genre, which Hollywood so often populates with brilliant masterminds or bumbling goofballs, when in fact most criminals are much like these - average, drug-addled, and not the world's great thinkers. It certainly has something to do with Samuel L. Jackson's astonishingly assured turn as Ordell Robbie, an arms dealer who is twice as dangerous as he looks and half as smart as he thinks he is. Somehow it all works perfectly, and the extras on this DVD only add to the value. As Jackie would say, "Boo yah!"

Not quite Pulp Fiction.

I remember seeing this around when it came out on VHS ( I didn't have aDVD yet.) and I liked it but I think I was expecting more shoot em upbang type movie. Now I've watched it again on TV and I look at itcompletely different. There are much more subtle moments in this moviethan I thought.I love the overall look and soundtrack which Tarentinois great at but something was missing.I think Sam Jackson's characterbecame too unlikable to quick in this flick. If they could of carriedthat for a bit longer and make a stronger twist that would have beengreat.Everything else isn't bad.More action would have beennice.Definitely see it if you've seen Pulp Fiction but wait betweenviewing cause they are not the same.

Tarantino brings a toned down version of Pulp

Jackie Brown by Quentin Tarantino is actully better and worse than PulpFiction. Better because there aren't alot of big coincidental scenes withtoo much plot going on at once, and this film also focuses on real problems, like getting old. Worse because throughout the movie it goes at a pace thatonly a retard would think is too fast. But, after I saw this film a secondtime, I actually thought it helped out the atmosphere.Along with that, the story is pretty good (based on the novel Rum Punch byElmore Leonard) and it is helped out along the way by great performances(including a comeback performance for Pam Grier as the star) and some highoctane scenes, including a cool one with Chris Tucker as Boemont Livingston. Not exactly Tarantino's best, but sa well done effort anyway. One of thebest films of 1997.

Tarentino sure knows how to tell a story...

Just saw this movie for the second time. I loved it the first time and gaveit 4 stars out of 4. The second time, it held my interest as much as thefirst. On IMDb I'm giving it 10 out of 10. The reason: Quentin Tarentinosure knows how to tell a story. All the characters are interesting (I can'tbelieve the reviewers here that say they were bored!), the acting isfirst-rate (from everyone, including an understated Robert deNiro), and thedirection and editing are is tight and neat. Even the scenes that "sound"boring on paper (like the ones at Bridget Fonda's apartment) are excitingand interesting because you just never know what's going to happen, and whatthese characters are up to. This is one great movie!

What are you saying?....Tarantino's world is a cool place

If you were to take this film, and compare it to Tarantino's earlier work, you'd never guess they came from the same director and yes baby he did a great job with "Jackie." This is one of those films which is strange but yet captivating. You'll definitely feel as though you are watching a "Blaxploitation" flick to the point that you'll be wondering what corner Richard Roundtree was hiding behind. Tarantino slows down a little and shows his skill at plotting an entertaining tale that doesn't tax your patience. In here, you do get less blood and more characterizations than usual and is unlike either of his first 2 movies. In Jackie Brown, Tarantino takes us for a ride as we follow Jackie Brown (Pam Grier), a flight attendant helping an arms dealer named Ordell Robbie (Samuel L. Jackson) get money where it needs to be. After a flight, she is pull aside by two cops, one being Ray Nicolet (Michael Keaton), who find the cash she is smuggling in for Ordell. Now she faces jail time and Ordell must get rid of somebody who might snitch. What happens now is the bail bondsman Max Cherry (Robert Forster) and Brown team up to mess with Ordell and his two pot smoking companions, Melanie (Bridget Fonda) and Louis Gara (Robert De Niro). Now it's a nice plot of how Ordell wants the half a million dollars he has coming to him with these arms deals and how Jackie Brown is the only connection between Ordell and the police and Cherry. This movie received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor (Robert Forster) and many good reviews. Forster isn't the only one giving a great performance. De Niro, Fonda, Jackson, Grier, Keaton, even Chris Tucker who is in the movie for probably less than five or ten minutes gives a notable performance. The whole ensemble is incredibly well casted and deserves to be recognized. However, this movie is uniquely Quentin T. and exhibits his versatile film making style. When he directs he allows his imagination free rein to experiment and explore. Each of his directorial efforts has been unique, and "Jackie Brown" is another successful experiment. This movie does have great dialogue. Not surprising considering this WAS an Elmore Leonard book with Tarantino doing the scripting. Both men have quite a talent for what they do. It is also clear that Tarantino loves what he does, sometimes a little too much. I have the soundtrack and just loved it. If you own it you will see how great the songs fit in and the dialogue. Loved the scene when they're all going to the mall at the end, and DeNiro's car is playing "Midnight Confession," and Forster's car is playing the Delfonics, "Didn't I Blow Your Mind" (a song that desperately needed re-discovery, thank you Quentin), and Jackie's car is playing "Street life!" and when Robert Forster first meets Jackie as he's bailing her out and "Natural High" comes on!!!!. Yes, QT is BRILLIANT when it comes to the use of music in his films and soundtracks. At the end of this, all the adventures and bizarre paths taken by these characters converge into a great film. What more can I say but to highly recommended this film along with the soundtrack.

highly entertaining

Jackie Brown is a real treat: a movie chock full of interesting and diversecharacters that manages to be alternatingly funny and suspenseful whileremaining even throughout.I won't ruin the movie for anyone who hasn't seen it, but if you like twistyand cleverly convoluted crime capers, then rent this one. You won't bedisappointed. The acting is stellar from everyone, and the soundtrack and screenplay arestandouts as well.

Tarantino has outdone himself on this one!

I have not liked one Quentin Tarantino film until this one.Thisfilm kept me in my seat the whole time! It was wonderfully directed andacted. Pam Grier as Jackie Brown was a sexy, intriguing, intelligentcharacter. The only thing I would have changed about this movie is thatJackie and Max (Robert Forrester) would have run off in the sunsettogether.
