Johnny English Reborn (2011)

I can't remember if I liked the first instalment less, or if I was justin a good mood for this outing. Either way, this wasn't particularlybad and I certainly laughed at some of the silly slapstick humour.Johnny English has been out of action for 5 years. An ex-CIA agent thencomes forward and says he has information for the MI7 but will onlytalk to English. English is soon back on the case, and messing up justabout everything. That's not entirely fair, a lot of the time he doesdo good. Such as a rather amusing foot chase which spoofs the parkourof Casino Royale, with English taking his time to walk the streets ofHong Kong. The jokes have all been done before, and are mostly sightbased. For example, English continuously misconstrues what certaingadgets are for and ends up using them in the wrong way. As I find witha lot of comedies these days, they often milk a joke. How many times dowe need to see Atkinson attacking elderly women thinking it's someoneelse? The supporting cast are all fine, but hardly any of them bringany comedic talents. It's all Atkinson's show. I really do think thespy spoof genre has run its course, especially when Spy filmsthemselves have stepped away from their usual formulaic nonsense andhave given us strong efforts including Casino Royale, Tinker TailorSoldier Spy, and the Bourne films.

A bit of Bean and a bit of Bond; Stirred, not shaken!

It is quite evident that this film and the preceding 2003 version aremuch lighter analogies of James Bond movies. Having said that, any orall clichés or scenes that resemble those in Bond films are negatedsimply due to the satirical nature of this film and in no way does ittry to be more that what it is— a comedy. Here's a re-cap if you have missed the first part. Johnny English(Rowan Atkinson) is a bumbling idiot whose incompetence leads to thedeath of British Intelligence operative 'Agent One'. At the funeralthat follows and under English's watch, all remaining MI-7 agents arekilled by a dirty bomb. It is now up to English to avert a plot tosteal the Crown Jewels and stop a despot from claiming the Crown ofBritain. With this second installment, we learn that after the firstmovie, English becomes a top agent on Her Majesties' Secret Service butafter bungling up a high profile mission in Mozambique, is dismissedfrom the Secret Service. Before the opening credits we are taken toTibet, where in a monastery, English learns martial arts and gainsinsight and retribution for his past mistakes. Soon after, MI-7re-instates English after learning of a plot to kill the Chinese PrimeMinister due to attend a summit in Switzerland. What follows is anaction packed, albeit, laughter induced farce where English mustprevent a shadow organization known as 'Vortex' from assassinating theChinese premier. Through trial and error, and many more errors, hediscovers the involvement of the KGB and the CIA and learns that no onecan be trusted, including friends at MI-7. Why do I think this movie is better than the first? For starters, PeterHowitt from the first movie is replaced by Oliver Parker as director, giving "Reborn" a tweaked look and feel that results in a fast pacedfilm with never a dull moment. Although Howitt's version relies heavilyon witty dialogue synonymous with typical British humor, Parker takesthis further by giving us moments we really want to see—Rowan Atkinsondoing what he does best. As such, there are moments where we get to seeMr. Bean again. Standout scenes are when English attends an emergencymeeting with the British prime Minister and whenever he has to recallthe "Mozambique" incident; hilarious and priceless, yet scenes with anunmistakable "Bean" signature. Having also written the screenplay forthe first movie, William Davies returns as co-writer but punctuates thescript with equal amounts of action and comedy. While comedy hereconsists of visual gags, minor slapstick moments and English's eyebrowraising dialogue, action is peppered with car chases, firefights anduse of gadgetry found in espionage movies. On that note, the plot takeson a slightly darker shade as compared to the first movie, resulting ina final act that looks almost as if it were indeed an espionagethriller. Like a Bond film, the plot also has English going places andis seen in and out of Tibet, Macau, Hong Kong and London, with anexplosive finale on the Swiss Alps. For a comedy of this nature, don't expect anything along the lines ofserious acting. Watching this movie with that expectation willseriously undermine a viewer's experience, especially with Atkinson asthe titled lead. His facial expressions alone are enough to throwperformance gauging out the window. Aside form Atkinson, GillianAnderson heads MI-7 as "Pegasus" in a role parallel to M in Bondflicks. Rosamund Pike is the agency's psychiatric-consultant andEnglish's love interest while Dominic West plays another covertoperative in a role critical to the plot. Playing English's sidekickand voice of reason, new comer Daniel Kaluuya adds to the laughter asEnglish's only admirer. As a Chinese assassin, PikSen Lim has some ofthe best scenes in the film opposite Atkinson. It was only after thescreening and while researching for this review that I realized withamazement, that Lim played Chung Su-Lee, a Chinese communist butEnglish student in the UK, in that 1970s sitcom "Mind Your Language".For the most part, it must have been a herculean task for all otheractors to maintain a straight face while Atkinson went about his comictalents. As a comedy, "Reborn" is in a class of its own. Even so, fans of the"Austin Powers" franchise may find "Johnny English Reborn" a tad bitmore entertaining, minus the often colorful characters associated withthe former. As I stated in the beginning, if you are willing to takethis movie at face value, then you will find yourself chuckling all theway to the end.

Being both a cartoon and a human being at the same time - it takes a genius

Much like its predecessor Johnny English Reborn is a cute silly spyspoof, relying on the comic genius of Rowan Atkinson. His perfect comictiming, his designed for comedy face and the sheer absurdity of castinghim as a would be super spy. But there's more to it, and it's still allin Atkinson's genius as he manages to perform the impossible and createa cartoon character who's also so very human that one can't help butroot for him. You may laugh yourself silly watching him making a foolof himself repeatedly, but you'll also feel for him and wish for hisunlikely triumph. His support cast is very good and up to the task, thedirecting is mainly busy staying out of Atkinson's way and making sureeverything else clicks in perfectly, and it does. I don't want to gointo comparisons, but Rowan Atkinson, whose proved himself to be agreat screen clown and a very competent actor, is upping his game anotch or two and proves he can do both at the same time - not manycould do that.

Somewhat Funny, Somewhat Uneven Atkinson Vehicle...

Johnny English(Rowan Atkinson) returns as MI7 Secret Agent who afterbeing blamed for a fouled-up assignment in Mozambique 5 years earlier, gets a second chance when personally requested for a vital mission. In order for MI7 to obtain important info, Atkinson must contactFisher(Richard Schiff)who with two other partners, are known as"Vortex." Each of the "Vortex" trio has one part of the key , that whenput together open a case that contains a deadly secret.Atkinson is at his best when put in out of control situations and makesit even more bizarre. His dead pan expressions are hilarious as are hisquick wit. Pegasus/Pamela(Gillian Andersen) MI7 Chief, plays her partstraight and does a fine job. While the script tries to give Atkinsons character more depth, somescenes are redone, and it doesn't add to the film. Agent Tucker(DanielKaluuya) sidekick to the obtuse English performs creditably, also atribute joke to the Actor Chris Tucker.Really funny at key times. and sometimes gets in its' own way. Endcredits have Atkinson making dinner to the "Hall of The Mountain King."Worth staying to see. 7 out of 10 rating.

Loved it more than a Bond movie! :-)..............

Oh the many many critics of this movie. :-)........ Guys, this is'Rowan Atkinson' - MR.BEAN! Do I need to say more.............You are all correct, its goofy, but isn't it also 'good' fun. I was soapprehensive seeing the many bad reviews.......Surprisingly they have avoided a lot of clichés, so there are so manythings (hey, at least a few), that ware smart and quick witted, andwill impress you.Gillian Anderson plays the head of MI7. She looks so similar to what Iremember her from nearly 15 or 20 yrs back from the X-Files TV series. She has hardly aged! The lovely Bond girl Rosamund Pike is the MI7 psych officer. And Johnny has a new cool teenage African American intern as his sidekick! Movie was FUN. At the very least you won't feel that you were cheatedout of 90mins. I had some genuine spontaneous laugh out loud moments. How many comedy movies of this age can claim that! Cheers! :-).............

Britain's Next Favourite Spy Is Back

Britain's beloved spy is back in Oliver Parker's new spy adventure'Johnny English Reborn'. Needless to say, the film spoofs the spyaction thriller genre (the first titles that pop in mind are thoseJames Bond flicks) and does an excellent job in doing so. And ofcourse, Atkinson is playing the lead so one can expect at least somelaugh out loud moments (and there are many of them). The script isfunny and the amusing action sequences are remarkably shot. The titlerole was obviously written for Rowan Atkinson and he performs all gunsblazing, tickling you to the bone. Very few can pull off slapstick aswell as he does. He is accompanied by two smoking hot beauties, GillianAnderson (who does a very impressive fake British accent as shestresses and stretches each word) and Rosamund Pike (as a professionalbehavioural therapist who inadvertently happens to know hypnotherapy).Dominic West does a good evil villain. With a solid balance of story, dialogue, action and humour, 'JohnnyEnglish Reborn' is a terrific sequel. One doesn't have to have watchedthe first film to fully enjoy this one. I was enjoying it so much thatI found myself wanting more when it finished.

A big waste of time and money.

Johnny English the first movie, was a really great movie. It washfun,Funny, exciting and really interesting. But,Johnny English Rebornwas a total let down.It was really the old school, and it wasn't funnyat all.Rowan Atkinson is a great actor and he can really make peoplelaugh. But in this movie he did the opposite.First of all there were alot of unnecessary scenes. The story wash a little bit of weird. And theend was a total disaster.Rowan is really the old school. He is old andit's not what it just to bee.The movie was fine but they repeated thesame funny parts all over again and again, and then it isn't funnyanymore. It's boring.I really love Rowan, hes a great actor but he reallyisn't funny anymore. This movie wash a total let down after seeing theprevious one!

Needed some fine tuning, gets you laughing still!

So here we are, nearing the end of the year 2011 and what better way tocelebrate than with some nice original British comedy? I say original,as far as working title go for originality it seems their idea pool isbeginning to run dry.'Johnny English: Reborn' is the sequel to a fairly successful originalcomedy 'Johnny English'. As with the word 'sequel' warning bells shouldstart to ring almost instantly. It is a rare occasion in which a sequelis better than its predecessor. So, the big question, is Rebornsuperior? Well no, but we can't say that it didn't try. It is clearjust how far filmmaking has come in recent years, technology isadvancing, special effects continue to get more dazzling (not thatthere were many in this film), yet scriptwriting seems to be gettingforever poorer. So, the plot; Johnny English was dismissed from MI7after a mission went badly and somebody under his security wasassassinated. I'm really wracking my brains to try and think of exactlywho it was and where it was… Mozambique I think, but even now thosedetails are starting to trickle away from my brain. Anyway, English hasbeen called back into the force five years on to take on a trio ofassassins by the name of 'Vortex', and thus begins an epic tale ofbetrayal, self-discovery and custard pie to the face comedy.I don't want to give away any spoilers, though much of the plot ishorribly predictable. Should this really matter however? This is RowanAtkinson after all, the man who invented the comedy icon which is MrBean, a comedy idol. I'm ashamed to say that it indeed does matter.Don't get me wrong, there were true moments of comedy genius in thisfilm (much of it towards the end), but most of it was samey boring andrather repetitive. Worst of all, as I touched on earlier in the review,it was predictable. One part that does need mention however was when the film didn't seemto be able to decide if it wanted to attempt a horror/thrillerapproach. It was immediately quashed after the big 'jump' moment, butironically, I think it could have worked.Onto the acting; Rowan Atkinson was obviously doing what he does best, and we can't fault him on his performance, just the lack of substancein the film in general. Unfortunately there seemed to be no chemistrybetween any of the actors whatsoever, and all of them seemed to betrying to keep afloat in the wake left by Atkinson. Daniel Kaluuya dida fair job as Agent tucker, yet still nothing special.I must note that I was highly disappointed that Natalie Imbruglia didnot make a return in this film. She was one of the driving forces thatmade the original film such a success, and her chemistry with Atkinsonworked. Whereas there was an attempt at a romance blossoming in thisfilm, it really didn't seem to take off.A question which we are all wondering of course is 'Will it become afranchise?' I really don't think so. The original Johnny English workedwell as a standalone film, we didn't need anymore, nor any less. Allthat Reborn has proved is that trying to add something to which nothingcan or should be added to, does not work. This is the point where I am supposed to say to you that 'If you likedthe first Johnny English then you'll love Reborn cause it is prettymuch more of exactly the same thing'. Sadly not, the lack of charactersfrom the original made it less like a sequel and more like a stab inthe dark. It was a brave stab in the dark I'll give them that, howeverfor me, and for many others, it did not work.In conclusion, there are some genuinely funny moments in the film whichhad me giggling for a fair amount of time after the film had finished. All of these moments will be lost, none of them are truly memorable. Ifyou like the general slapstick comedy style which is infesting modernsociety nowadays, you will like Reborn. If you were hoping forsomething which was born from the original and developed into a finerstyle for this instalment, you will be sadly disappointed.Give it a look if you need some quick smiles, otherwise guys, nothingspecial.Until next time. The Critic.

Excellent

A friend of mine warned me to go in with zero expectations. So I did. Iread a few reviews around the internet about the movie, going on abouthow the audience weren't roaring with laughter. Well that simply wasn't what I just been through. There was a scene ortwo where the audience even started applauding! Frankly speaking, this movie is a vast improvement over the first one, with heightened unpredictability and more genuine gags. I think what you'll have to remember, if you're gonna catch it, is thatAtkinson is best known for his slapstick (+silent) comedy, and nothilarious lines like Adam Sandler. If you're expecting a deep plot and clever dialogue, you won't find itin this movie - though I must say that the move has gotten the balanceof plot, dialogue, and comedy, quite right. As I went in with very little expectations I was very pleasantlysurprised especially when sequels tend to be a step down from theoriginals but this was better.A solid 7/10.

A Fairly Disappointing Sequel

Well I went to see this film purely based on the fact that I loved thefirst film. So straight away I was slightly annoyed that Johnny is theonly original character in this film, that doesn't mean that the newcharacters aren't good but I personally would've liked to have seensome familiar faces. The story itself was average, it was interesting but kind offorgettable at the same time, equally it wasn't particularly funny, there were a few laughs to be had but overall it was, you guessed it,average. I guess that's this films biggest flaw is that it's tooforgettable, it wasn't amazing but it wasn't terrible, and some timesthat can be worse than either. In summary; would I pay to watch this film again? no. Will I be buyingthe DVD? no. Will I be watching it when it inevitably gets shown on TV?maybe if nothing else is on.My advice is to watch it for yourself, but to find a way to watch itfor free.

the New IMDb List Widgets Getting Me Down..

For me as a Flanlander living in the UK it is very interesting to learnabout the international reactions on this movie since it is really oneof the best British movies of all time.Main Plot: Though I can only catch English isolated phrases here andthere, I still find the film entertaining. I laughed out loud manytimes. The sets are also decorated nicely, each of the apartments areset up so that they really feel like a home sweet home. Apart from being entertaining, it also promotes tolerance anddiversity. ... Hillarios! For me, as a straight guy, it was a fantasticmovie. I really hope that the subtitles are o.k., since a lot oftranslations of Hollywood movies or TV-series are badly made (e.g.FRIENDS: brilliant in English, but terrible English translation) Enjoy!

A bunch of warmed up, same old gags. Look instead the Pink Panther with Peter Sellers.

A bunch of warmed up, same old gags. Look instead the Pink Panther withPeter Sellers.Mr. Bean is the only thing Rowan Atkinson can do well. It is also theonly new creative and innovative thing he does. The rest is to forget, like this thousandth James Bond persiflage. Although Atkinsonparticipated himself in a very small side role in the "Never say neveragain" 1983 Bond movie.Maybe he got from there his uncreative inspiration to do a Bondpersiflage. There is an absence of new creative gags. Everything had already beenseen once or more often before. From such movies I demand somethinginnovative in this area. Some new never seen gags. Not the same oldwarmed up gags. Also it is disturbing that he is neither the full idiot, nor the fullcool guy. Unlike Peter Sellers in his unforgettable Pink Panthermovies. This was the best secret agent/ policeman persiflage ever done.Watch those movies instead and you will fall over dead of laughing. :-)

Very funny, lots of action

Johnny English is a comedy/action picture. It starts with him intraining in some sort of karate camp somewhere in the mountains inanother country. He had worked as a secret agent and was supposed to protect the leaderof another country but the leader was killed and he was blamed for notdoing his job right. He gets called back to work. Johnny is clumsy, tripping, banging his head, using the wrong secret weapons at the wrongtime or in the wrong way. There is a 3 piece key that every spy is looking for. A member of hisgroup is a traitor but no one know who it is. Johnny is really stupidbut gets the job done, somewhat like Peter Seller as InspectorClouseau. He also has a young black partner who is a lot smarter themhim. The movie has lots of action, jumping from building, car chases, shooting with special weapons etc.I think it is a good family movie but for older kids. There is noswearing or sex just lots of laughs. I enjoyed it.

More great fun with our favourite bungling spy! Johnny English is back and just as great as ever!

Finally after a much long await of eight years, the nations favouritehopeless spy Johnny English gets his much deserved sequel, though notquite as excellent as the first this sequel is still very enjoyable.Johnny English Reborn is set five years after his adventure in thefirst. Hiding out shamelessly in a cave in Tibet Johnny is called backinto service by Her Majesty once again to foil international assassinsin their plot to terminate the Chinese premier. Rowan Atkinson proves once again why he is one our best comedy actors. He plays English down to a T and if one ever had any doubts if he wouldbe able to step back into the role after eight years, seeing thisshould wipe those doubts out of your mind. He gives a hilariousperformance all the way through aided by sketches of slapstick thoughpredictable are wondrous in their genius of timing. They are so welltimed just like in the first film, it makes it all the more hilariousthanks to a sharp and witty script. There are numerous funny sequences throughout,(which had me chucklingand shouting with laughter) with too many to pick from. But myfavourites would have to be when English mistakens his bosses mother asa Korean assassin and undoubtedly the best one, which had me cryingwith laughter and has already been identified with other audiencereviewers on here is the scene where English is in a briefing sittingon a chair, which he tries to adjust, breaks and ends up the chairrising up and down. Great performances are also supplied by Rosamund Pike as apsychologist, Daniel Kaluuya as Agent Tucker who though good isn't inthe same league as Bough (Ben Miller) and Dominic West as Ambrose.Johnny English Reborn is a hilarious spectacle from start to finish, that those who liked the first film or who are a fan of Rowan Atkinsonshould see. The nations favourite bungling spy is back!

Enjoyable but not exactly challenging or fresh.

Sequels never live up to the original right? Wayne's World, Shrek andThe Matrix are all good examples of this. So, with this in mind, I setout to watch Johnny English: Reborn. Having loved the original, I washoping for the best and expecting the absolute worst. And, what do youknow? I was pleasantly surprised.Although nothing can beat the exceptional first movie, Johnny English:Reborn at least managed to almost equal it. Some scenes were simplyhilarious- for example, the scene in which Johnny and his assistant aretrying to find the mole in MI7 in a restaurant toilet and areinterrupted by an elderly gentleman needing the toilet. Genius. And I can't doubt the acting abilities of the cast- Rowan Atkinson,Daniel Kaluuya and Dominic West all play their parts with perfectcomedic timing and flourish. However, the script wasn't always as tight as it could have been andthe laughs were sometimes a little obvious. The only other complaint was that actually, had it not been alighthearted spy comedy, it could very well be a sinister horror movie.A key part of the plot is that a female Chinese assassin keeps tryingto kill Johnny English by following him, pretending to be a cleaner. Wecan hear her ominous hoover, vacuuming away shortly before we see her, building up the tension. She then strikes and lunges herself intoviolent attempts to kill him. Obviously, it's all very funny and a bitslapstick during the fight scenes but gets a little repetitive after awhile.Overall, I can't say that it beats the original, but Johnny English:Reborn certainly has its moments and I would recommend it as a relaxed, family comedy.Visit www.notallaboutboys.weebly.com for more writing from me!

For the Kids, Mr Bean Will Ham Things UP!

I know you will get plot from anywhere ! Here are three things aboutmovie, Why to Watch: 1. I have heard a lot about this guy JohnnyEnglish, so I had a lot curiosity about the plot (+ a good cast) 2.Plot, based upon history. 3D is not really effective (minus point forthe movie). So, not one of the really good 3D movies.3. Good Direction, Screen-play.Why not to watch: This is actually not what I wanted to say, movie issurely watchable, but the 5000 pound gorilla in the room is that someflaws are there. The movie is not entirely up to the expectation(rathermy expectation). I thought the movie is about funnymen and theirfriends,It will be all about their F'ship, but its not shown that much, the movie is actually about the UK's drab version of Jim Carry:Mr,Bean. Action is good but was expecting even better, considering thelevel of the plot.My verdict is watch the movie. 3D effects, Plot, and no extrapakugiri(boring things) Overall 2/10

Were you expecting a masterpiece?

I certainly wasn't expecting a masterpiece. what I was expecting wasdumb humoured spy comedy, If you look at it that way then you willenjoy this movie if you have a similar sense of humour to me.Once reading some of the reviews that criticised this I felt I have tosay "were you expecting a masterpiece?" I mean this is the sort ofmovie that isn't by any means of the imagination a cinematicmasterpiece (unless there is a little kid watching) but if you look atit for what it is then you might actually enjoy this.I think that like the Austin Powers films this one attacks a wholeseries of clichés used in action films (in this movie the only chasescene comes to mind). This movie is one of those few sequels that are better than theoriginal and this movie does have the same sort of humour, if you wantto see a movie with different humour then you're not doing very well bylooking at the movies sequel. When watching, don't expect something film snobs will enjoycomedy-wise, just expect dumb humour.I watched the trailer presented on IMDb, the trailer here is AWFUL!just watch the Australian trailer just to show what it's Actually like

Great

This movie is damn funny. I didn't watch the first show, but I canassure you, when I went to watch it yesterday at 21.15, all shows from20.45, 21.00, 21.15, 21.30, 21.45 were full. Also, during the partswhere Mr Bean just talked something funny, the whole theatre waslaughing. I almost threw my popcorn up into the air during the chairshrinking part, and my dad choked on his drink. The whole movie isfunny and not in a lowbrow way like most movies you see nowadays withdisgusting sex or poop jokes. It has the British humour. And theopening scenes imitate the parkour one in James Bond but it is muchmore realistic. I think, if you don't set your expectations too high, you will find it above your expectations.

Great laugh out loud comedy.

Johnny English Reborn is a brilliantly funny movie,it kept me laughingout loud the whole way through which Rowan Atkinson always seems to do(especially as Mr Bean of course),the storyline and everything else wasaltogether brilliant.Johnny English (Rowan Atkinson) must return to M1-7 after being gonefor years working on his skills in Asia, and now a group ofinternational assassins are trying to eliminate a world leader andcause global chaos and now its up to Johnny English and his partnerAgent Tucker to stop them, but they don't seem to have the brains forthe job.
