Story Line

Plot Summary:

Steven Spielbergs 1993 mega-hit rivals Jaws as the most intense and frightening film hed ever made prior to Schindlers List, but it was also among his weakest stories. Based on Michael Crichtons novel about an island amusement park populated by cloned dinosaurs, the film works best as a thrill ride with none of the interesting human dynamics of Spielbergs Jaws. That lapse proves unfortunate, but theres no shortage of raw terror as a rampaging T-rex and nasty raptors try to make fast food out of the cast. The effects are still astonishing (despite the fact that the computer-generated technology has since been improved upon) and at times primeval, such as the sight of a herd of whatever-they-are scampering through a valley.

The Definitive Evolutionary Thriller

The father of the summer blockbuster tradition's third time aroundmaking the most commercially successful film ever is a real cinemasignpost, presenting wonder- and terror-stimulating highlights, themore stunning of these concerning the ferocious, realistic dinosaursthat trail through the film with a still amazing simplicity. Just asintimidating, though, maybe more, are those features of Jurassic Parkthat determine it as the meteoric forerunner of a mint entertainmentkingdom. Even while seizing the imagination of its enormous audience, this film sets the stage for the amusement park rides, sequels andsouvenirs that assure the Jurassic Park event would continue for over adecade. The calculation of this cinematic marketing takeover didn't seem likeit could be surpassed, because a whole age bracket had becomeinfatuated with dinosaurs, turning the fossils of long ago into themonolithic props of the '90s. This at times almost unbearably intensethriller is still today a riveting, worthily scientific story of aclassified theme park, branded for the age throughout which dinosaursexisted. Jurassic Park's centerpiece is actual sentient dinosaurs, which have been produced through the regeneration of dinosaur DNA takenfrom blood unearthed in prehistoric mosquitoes sealed in amber. Thefilm describes this procedure by way of a "Mr. D.N.A." cartoon.Crichton, who adapted his source with David Koepp, relishes suchparticulars and illustrates his plot as a beguiling, fanaticallycomprehensive discourse on both the promise and harms of prevailingtechnology. The coolest character in Crichton's story, wry chaostheorist Ian Malcolm, is among various scientists taken to JurassicPark to examine it before its opening. Faced with the seeming foolproofenvironment of this mechanized paradise, Malcolm is incredulous. Herepeatedly refers to applied mathematics as a means of indicating thatsupposedly faultless representations have a way of toppling once theycontend with the real world.Theoretically, this plot is custom-made for the talents of the man whocould buy everyone on Hollywood's Power List, merging the alarm of Jawswith the state-of-the-art parable of E.T. and Close Encounters, andsure enough including the trial of constructing the dinosaursthemselves. In a few key scenes equaling the fright rate of Jaws, thedifference is that this film's dinosaurs tread on its humans bothliterally and metaphorically, however persuasively sympathetic andamusingly distinctive the cast is. They show just for conciseinterludes, yet the they rule Jurassic Park in every sense. Remarkablyfluid and realistic, they set an exorbitant benchmark for the stillbudding CGI. However, thinking about how those effects were pulled offaren't prone to arise while the film's in progress. The key to thedinosaurs of this undeniable pleasure is that they form a conqueringfantasy. We believe we've hung around in a dinosaur-filled realm. That realm, on an island nearby Costa Rica, is the innovation of JohnHammond, a tiresomely cheery gray eccentric who enlists Drs. Grant andSattler as members of a party presumed to give Jurassic Park its stampof support. But a quaint thing occurs en route to the Tyrannosauruspen. Thanks to an business saboteur attempting to appropriate dinosaurembryos, power within this programmed theme park is deactivated.Enormous, unpleasant, ravenous creatures begin to roam free.Helming the dinosaurs' exploits is Spielberg's forte, and theprofessional dreamer's excitement is unmistakable. He has an immenseparty with every single roar and shudder indicating the advanceingthreat, as when Malcolm notices a mud puddle tremble. He also hurdlesto the test of composing inspired duels, as in a tremendous sequencewhere brutal velociraptors hunt Hammond's two grandchildren through theoutsized kitchen of the visitor's center. Anybody can show a battle, but it takes Steven Spielberg to portray just how the pots and pansmight go soaring at the thump of a velociraptor's tail, or how thechildren might mislead their cunning assailants. In considering such ascene, it also helps to behold the broader picture. Who but the mostrepresented filmmaker on AFI's 100 Most Inspiring Movies of All Timecould persuade an audience that there are dinosaurs at large in akitchen by any means? But the film's deserving centerpiece is thesequence where the Tyrannosaurus scrutinizes and masticates a Jeepcontaining desperately frozen-stiff characters is one of the mostexhilarating scenes ever put on film. It's hopeless discerning theeffects from the real, and it's equally as suspenseful when you're 22as when you're 5.His fourteenth film keeps us nervous while leaving much of its actualbrutality to the mind. When it's dinosaur dinner time, Spielbergsidesteps obvious gore, getting a superior quiver out of showing farmanimals that are left near the famished creatures and swiftly vanish. To give the velociraptors a fitting initiation, he starts the film witha character whose upper body stays seen while the rest of him is beingaccosted off screen, a la Jaws. Such tense and gruesome strokes arejoined with over-romantic ones and intermittent droll sight gags andobservations. As an action adventure, as an auteurist visualization, asa blockbuster, as a humanist assertion, however capitalisticallyinclined, it's a tour de force.

Family-friendly adventure mixed with total horror

I saw "Jurassic Park" at the theater with my then-girlfriend wife in1993. There was much anticipation concerning Spielberg's dinosaurs and,as far as that goes, the film delivers. The story is a good-enoughstage for the dinosaurs and the characters are okay. As my title blurbpoints out, this is essentially a Disney adventure with horrificdinosaurs. The latter is where the film excels, but it takes a whole hour toarrive. The good thing about the long wait is that it creates muchanticipation. ("Jurassic Park III" does the exact opposite and suffersfor it). When the t-rex sequence arrives it is both most welcome andtruly horrifying. Two other thrilling scenes are memorable – the t-rexchasing the jeep and the closing velociraptor sequence, particularly inthe kitchen. As far as the principle cast goes, Sam Neill and Jeff Goldblum areeffective as the male protagonists while Laura Dern is likable enough. She doesn't trip my trigger in the sex appeal department, but that'sjust a matter of taste. The kids are good, especially the girl (ArianaRichards), while Richard Attenborough comes across as Santa Claus.Wayne Knight plays the quasi-villain and he originally struck me aswandering off the set of another movie. Seeing the film recently, he'sstill a bit over-the-top and cartoony, but provides a necessarycontrast to the other characters. The film runs 127 minutes and was shot in Hawaii, Dominican Republicand Costa Rica.BOTTOM LINE: The dinosaurs and thrills are A+ while the story andcharacters are just good-enough. This is a straight-aheadfamily-friendly adventure with little depth and there's nothing wrongwith that, especially since the film delivers what we came for –realistic-looking dinosaurs, and more – total horror.GRADE: B

The lack of humility before nature that's being displayed here, uh... staggers me.

This film is always enjoyable. In fact, I find it gets better each timeI watch it.It is characterized by excellent performances from Laura Dern and JeffGoldblum. They are not the only ones that stand out. Joseph Mazzello and ArianaRichards as the grandchildren were also very good. The sound effects and the special effects were dazzling. They areworthy of the Oscars they won.Wayne Knight as the porcine son Dennis provided a lot of laughs. The second half of the film was amazing action that you couldn't tearyour eyes away from.A great movie.

Pure Entertainment!

Steven Spielberg's body of work is legendary. He is widely consideredto be the most influential storyteller of this generation. I oncequoted by saying 'Speilberg can't afford a single hater'. I personallyfeel that he's immortal, in fact, I feel he'll be around Film-People &Buffs alike, for the longest time. His 1993 Blockbuster-Hit 'Jurassic Park' is Pure Entertainment. It's ajoyride, that keeps you gripped till the end. It's fantastically shot &executed.'Jurassic Park' takes place on the fictional Isla Nublar near CostaRica in the Central American Pacific Coast, where a billionairephilanthropist and a team of genetic scientists have created anamusement park of cloned dinosaurs. While During a preview tour, thetheme park suffers a major power breakdown that allows its cloneddinosaur exhibits to run amok.Based on the novel of the same name by Michael Crichton, this Sci-FiThriller offers interesting & engrossing moments all through. Spielbergdirects each sequence beautifully. Cinematography & Editing areperfect. Visual Effects are stunning. While in the acting department,Sam Neill, Laura Dern, Richard Attenborough & Jeff Goldblum pitch insuperb performances. On the whole, A Joyride, that deserves a watch for various reasons. TwoThumbs Up!

An Excellent Special Effects Thrill Ride

I remember seeing Jurassic Park back when it was first released in theaterswith the booming THX sound and big screen. It quickly became one of myfavorite fantasy films of all time, and still remains so today. While it takes several artistic liberties from the book, it has a greatcast, a wonderful musical score (Courtesy of the ever-talented JohnWilliams), and the special effects still hold up as well today as they didwhen it was released nearly 7 years ago.Jurassic Park is a movie to be savored, like "Star Wars" or "Indiana Jones". It's one excellent non-stop thrill after another that can only be describedas fun. The introduction of the T-Rex is still one of the most memorablescenes in the entire film, and the raptors were just relentless. I don'tthink the dinosaurs would have been nearly as frightening if they were just"monsters". The fact that these creatures behaved like instinct-drivenanimals kept the tension factor high.My only complaint? I wish that the "Lost World" sequel had been as good tokeep the thrills up past this film. At least Jurassic Park didn't have asmany drastic changes made to it like the sequel. Overall, another excellentSteven Spielberg film.

The Invasion

This is a spectacular movie! At the beginning, you'll learn about mosquitos and amber, then you'll see lots of dinosaurs such as Triceratops,Tyrannosaurus Rex,and Velociraptor, but it's a bit scary,so make sure you're not too below eight years old.

A classic adventure

Recap: Three scientists, Grant, Sattler and Malcolm are recruited by awealthy entrepreneur to inspect his latest business venture before itis opened to the public. The entrepreneur, John Hammond and scientistsworking for him has managed to extract and develop dinosaur DNA,resurrecting one extinct species after another. Soon Jurassic Park, atheme park with living, wild dinosaurs, will open. But the tour issabotaged, the security measures turned off, and soon the dinosaurs runfree. The weekend tour is now a fight for survival.Comments: I remember it very well when this movie opened at thecinemas, a major development in cgi and a big step for movies. Iremember going to the cinema on several occasions to see it, enjoyingit every time. Now, almost two decades later effects have developedmassively but Jurrasic Park still holds its own against thecompetition. As a testament to the craftsmanship that was put into themovie, Jurassic Park don't look obsolete or out of place when watchedeven today. What it has lost is its uniqueness, now cgi like that are hardlybreathtaking. The story is OK, the music great, but the main attractionwhen it was released was the stunning effects. With that lost it isstill a good adventure movie, with a few quite suspenseful moments anda few jokes and one-liners mixed in, but it is not the stellar movieexperience it once was. That aside, I still enjoy it. The only partsthat annoy me is that it occasionally suffers fromirritating-kid-syndrome, for example with the flashlight in the jeepand the T-rex.The cast is strong, with Sam Neill, Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblumheading the credits. But it is most fun to see Samuel L Jackson in asupporting role as a programmer before breaking through big time andbecoming a leading actor himself.8/10 (based upon how I felt when it was released, now it maybe is a 7)

'Westworld' revisited

Steven Spielberg's popular crowd-pleaser rode the crest of a passingdinosaur craze (a craze engineered, in part, to coincide with thefilm's release), but it also delivered enough genuine summer matinéefun to justify all the hoopla. There isn't anything particularlyoriginal about the film: the skimpy plot, following a group ofreluctant tourists trapped on an island theme park with maraudingdinosaur clones, is a state-of-the-art update of 'Westworld', alsowritten by Michael Crichton; Sam Neill's paleontologist hero is acardboard ringer for Indiana Jones (the role might have been writtenfor Harrison Ford); and if the film is Spielberg's most effectivethrill ride since 'Jaws' it's only because his dinosaurs are distantcousins to Bruce the Great White Shark. The script may be thin and the (human) characters unforgivably shallow, but none of that should worry viewers expecting to be scared half outof their seats. Spielberg's only aim - reinforced by an anticlimacticending almost begging for a sequel - is to provide two hours ofundiluted distraction, and (fortunately) the best moments lean more onexpensive lab work than on decent writing or depth of character. Forone tenth the budget (and one tenth the profits) Ray Harryhausen couldhave made essentially the same movie, but 'Jurassic Park' is alegitimate blockbuster, with one nagging reservation: after so muchadvance publicity, did the director really need to plug his ownpromotional merchandise in the film?

What I think of Jurassic Park

The first time I saw Jurassic park, I was only eight. Quite frankly, Ihad NO want to watch scary dinosaurs eat people or chase people. I hadnightmares for WEEKS. But la-di-da-ing through channels, I stopped onit one day a while ago. 'Holy CATS!' I exclaimed, 'They still have thismovie?!' I sat down and watched the last twenty minutes of it. The more I reallylistened to it, the more I really understood it. Now, I can't getenough of it. I confiscated it from the family movie case and now itlives safely in my room next to my TV. I find it an oddly satisfying movie to watch on a windy, cold nightwith a few gal pals. We all love Goldblums sense of humor in oddsituations, and we ALL love the character Ellie. Alright, alright, enough about OUR opinions, right?I'd recommend this for a ten year-old, sure. They might not get thefull effect of it, but hey, kids these days are getting' smart! It hasa intriguing story line and it kept me itching to find out whathappened next. I don't think that there were ANY boring parts, exceptfor in the very beginning when we first see that Dennis guy (The dudewith 'butterfingers'). But as I was about to change the channel, he putthe shaving cream on the pie. That would bite to take a taste of that!Yuck! All and all, I really enjoyed watching the actors well, act. Imean...Actors usually do that...They had great personalities!Ten out of Ten!

"Boy, do I hate being right all the time."

Jurassic Park genetically splices the fairy tale of The Sorceror's Apprentice with the modern Godzilla myth. Science, from this film's angle, is a form of modern-day magic that destroys all who try to employ it for personal gain. The invisible hand behind the drama - and this is a drama - is Chaos Theory: Newest god in the scientific pantheon. Predictions of imminent collapse made by the chaotician (deftly portrayed by Jeff Goldblum) rapidly manifest in just one afternoon: "Boy, do I hate being right all the time". At its release, Jurassic Park was a dream-come-true for children. I would have loved to see this film as a child - no doubt being frightened for days after. Fortunately, I was able to watch it with my nine-year-old son, which in retrospect was even better. A dark but overall upbeat roller-coaster.

AN AWESOME ACTION THRILLER!

Man this movie is intense. It is soo great. At the time, it had to be the best movie of the year. Spielberg really mad a classic out of that movie. Now it is an 8 year old movie. In the movie it shows how scientest fickle around with dino DNA, and frog DNA to create...Dinosaurs. It might seem as if everything is going right at firtst, but the senario of the movie is changed. The big turning point of this flick is when the power shuts down, and the dino's start exscaping. Not good. SO get up and go rent this and you will see that it is a wonderful movie. Also in 1998 ,i think, spielberg brought Jurasic Park back with "The Lost World" (a sequal to Jurasic Park). Now this movie wasn't nearly as awesome as the first. But it still was a good movie. Just the people actually new what they were up against, they were prepared, but in the first they were not as prepared and that is what makes it so intense. So go watch this and enjoy it.

The Great Escapist Film

So many people are slamming this movie for a weak script, but this isn't supposed to be Schindler's List! Take this one out for a spin and enjoy the ride! The DTS version really rocks. There's room for many genres of film, and this one is a great for what it is. The acting is fine, the soundtrack is great, the cinematography is fantastic, and the computer graphics are as good as it gets. The sound quality is jusy phenominal (another great example of DTS at its finest). Watch this one when you want to escape reality and enjoy the rush of great action. This isn't the film for profound thinking, but does it have to be? Relax a bit, Amazon reviewers, and enjoy the action side of Spielberg. No, it's not one of the finest films ever made-- Citizen Kane is not in danger of falling-- but I watch this one for escapist cinema! Want to think a bit? I just saw The Manchurian Candidate (try this one for deeper thought!) ENJOY Jurassic Park! If you're going to buy, I suggest the DTS if you have the system!

How Is this NOT in the top 250?

Jurassic Park is the main reason I became a dinosaur fan. When I firstsaw this movie when I was about 3 or 4 I watched it mainly for thedinosaurs, which I still do but after watching it when I'm a lot olderI started to not just love the dinosaurs but the IDEA of a theme parkzoo filled with dinosaurs! I also think the story is amazing. I don'tsee how anyone could hate this film or give it a 1 out of 10. Also asyou may know, Dr. Grants character is based on the famouspaleontologist Jack Horner. Who as we speak is working on reverseengineering a chicken to give is teeth, tail, and change its wings toclaws. This is just one of the many reasons I am interested so much inJP. It has inspired people and has been inspired by people. 10/10

A Groundbreaking Experience You'll never Forget

Jurassic Park is a movie that will make your jaw hit the floor withamazement. Everything about it is done right, and although it hasscenes of dinosaurs eating people, it's a great movie for kids of allages. I should know. I first watched this movie when I was 5 years old,and I loved it, but that doesn't mean every kid won't be scared.Consider that a fair warning. The plot is simple. Scientist find a way to bring back the dinosaursand build an entire theme park around it, but something goes wrong andthe dinosaurs escape. Soon, the characters end up fighting for survivalon an island full of dangerous predators. The plot is simple, but it works much better than you can hope for. Many scenes are like an action movie in which you're on the edge ofyour seat the whole time wondering what will happen to the characters, and the actors do a well enough job to make you care for them. Sam Neiland Jeff Goldblum interact very well and Richard Attenborough does agreat job as John Hammond. The rest of the cast are good as well. However, the thing that stole the show were the dinosaurs and thespecial affects that brought them to life. They were so incredible thateven today, you can watch it and believe that they used real dinosaurs. The scene where the T-Rex attacks the jeeps is a great example, andshows you just how great special affects can be. The dinosaurs are thekey ingredients that make the movie so believable and intense.Jurassic Park is one heck of a roller coaster ride. It grabs you by thenostrils at the beginning and never lets go. Audiences of all ages canenjoy this, and it's best watching it with your family. It's agroundbreaking movie that will glue you to the screen, and the bestadventure you can ask for.

The rape of the natural world?

This movie, was, in 1993, a visually spectacular phenomenon that has set thestandard for special effects in many subsequent films. The musical score by the brilliant John Williams is phenomenal - the entirescore is well worth purchasing in it's own right, and it compliments themovie beautifully. However, it is Goldblum's character who has some important and profoundinsights into the whole concept of a man-made amusement park whichdisregards the natural world. In the wake of the discovery of geneticcloning, these insights are even more profound. He refers to it as 'the rapeof the natural world'. "You stood on the shoulders of geniuses, and beforeyou even knew what you had, you packaged it and patented it, and now you'reselling it". When life imitates fiction - oh the irony! And, as he says, "you were so preoccupied with whether or not you could, that you didn't stop to think if you should". A great film.

Awesome

I'm compelled to write this after seeing how many lunatics give thismovie 1 out of 10. Seriously, I think they may be dead inside. JurassicPark was, and still is, awe-inspiring. One of my favourite movies ofall time, easily. 15 years later and the raptors in the kitchen isstill one of the scariest, most thrilling scenes in a film I have seen.Brilliant cast! Brilliant effects! Brilliant script!and JEFF GOLDBLUM!Brilliant!

I'm amazed this isn't in the top 250!!

It still baffles me why this brilliant movie isn't in the top 250 moviesforIMDB! it's amazing!I think this is the kind of film that people take too seriously and don'tsee the obvious reasons what make this such a great movie. For one such as"Jurassic Park" it represents everything a summer blockbuster should be,(and why Spielberg is the king of 'blockbuster summer' movies). In all fairness, a film like this is only worth watching for the specialeffects (which still remain top-notch). It is a dinosaur movie- it doesexactly what it says on the tin- it thrills and amazes and never lets up,itis perfect popcorn fare and not since "Jaws" (the first proper summerblockbuster!) has a film so brilliantly had such an affect on movies whichwere to follow.Essentially it is "Jaws" on-land and it does so perfectly, with great pacegreat set-pieces. I wish this film was in the top 250, if any moviedeserves it , "Jurassic Park" does, not just for being such a great filmbutalso for revolutionising films from there on out!!Brilliant!!!

The single most awe-inspiring film of all time!

Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park is, without doubt, the single mostawe-inspiring film of all time. No movie makes you stare, open-mouthedin amazement the way Jurassic Park does.Whether is be the first dinosaur, or the closing sequence, it is filledwith wonder and suspense. You will be laugh, you will be amazed, youwill be terrified. This is not like the classic monster movies, butmore of a thriller. These are not monsters on screen. They are animalswho act on their instinct. The effects are, again without doubt, the greatest effects ever. It wasthe first movie to fully utilize CGI technology. While CGI is widelyused now, Jurassic Park features the BEST CGI. You see films now, andthe CGI does not touch that of Jurassic Park.If you are one of the few people on this planet who have never seenJurassic Park, you need to. Don't hesitate one minute to watch thiscinema classic.
