A film that's all you could ever ask for.

Simply said, such a great film. I won't give too much away but inessence, this film is about a young high school student who loves comicbooks and wonders the world has so much evil, yet people stand and donothing. It's not so much the plot of this movie that is so intriguingbut the way in which it is handled. Every aspect of this movie is takenrealistically, in a way that leaves the audience with no questions ofdisbelief. The cast in this is incredible. Definitely a breakthroughperformance from Aaron Johnson, and Chloe Moretz is hilarious. Thebiggest on-screen persona comes from none other than Nic Cage as BigDaddy. The patriarchal-revenge-crazy Cage is astounding to watch andthe action throughout is immensely thrilling. While few other moviesare as compelling, Cage's next best "Trespass" looks like a winner. Doyourself a favor and check out the trailer. http://on.fb.me/pchomT

Kick-Ass

This review is from: Kick-Ass (DVD) When I saw the trailers when this movie was at the theaters I thought this might be an entertaining young adult movie and so I added it to my to rent list. Had I known how entertaining I would have made a now rare visit to my local theater to enjoy this with an audience when it first released. Most kids and even some adults still have the dream of making a difference whether doning a costume or just helping their community in some way. The story here is compelling and like the music starts at a slow tempo as we are introduced first to "Kick-Ass", well portrayed by Aaron Johnson. He is a high school student that finally gets tired of bullies and decides to take steps to not only improve his own self-esteem but assist others that are afraid to take a stand. On his first mission to save a lost cat he drops literally into three men beating up another. His fight to defend the single man from the gang is painful for him and lands him it the hospital with broken bones but it is posted on all the usual hot amateur video sites and he becomes famous overnight. This stardom catches the attention of "Hit Girl", remarkably done by Chloe Moretz (some superbly choreagraphed scenes make her larger than life), and "Big Daddy", well played by Nicolas Cage (purposely overacted while in hero mode is good acting not bad), that have been more reclusive and deadlier against criminals. When they save Kick-Ass from certain death a bond is formed against crime. The choreography and stunts of the fight scenes are phenomenal and the music is fantastic (the CD will be a huge hit I'm sure). As the story unfolds we find out that Big Daddy not only was falsely accused of drug trafficing while he was a police officer but he ends up in jail and his wife commits suicide. Fortunately their daughter is born with her death. When Big Daddy gets out of prison he vows to avenge his wife, and he enlists the aid of his very young daughter on his quest. Enter the villains son, Red Mist, that convinces his father to get him some gear to impress Kick-Ass so that he can lure him into a trap. The events that transpire after this build to an incredible climax that is suspenseful and exhilarating.I won't spoil things for you with any more of the details but there are some absolutely hysterical/bloody scenes that will quite possibly have you laughing and crying with joy. Anyone that feels overly offended by vigilantes may be disturbed. Although I'm not saying I condone it, how can I possibly condone what criminals do to the innocent public? Keep in mind everyone has been exposed to far worse on the news every day. I highly recommend this to anyone that can appreciate unconventional heroes and can stomach some bloody killing scenes. The DVD has excellent quality picture and sound with a few extras. Superb story, casting, directing, choreography, stunts, camera work, costumes, music, and special effects. If you enjoyed this catch Kill Bill - Volume One [Blu-ray] and Kung Fu Hustle [Blu-ray].CA Luster

Simply Amazing!

The movie KICK ASS lives up to it's title. It's another movie based off a comic book. I wouldn't even call it a super hero movie, because it really wasn't one. It was a action, comedy that mixed in some drama. The story is easy to follow, a unpopular kid named Dave Lizewski(Aaron Johnson). One day he thinks why hasn't anyone tried to be a super hero before. So he decides to become one and Kick Ass is born. The comedy follows, as one early scene he tries to find a cat by show the picture to random people in his costume. Eventually he gets in over his head and runs into Big Daddy(Nicolas Cage) and Hit Girl(Chloe Moretz). Things get more serious, but the movie never leaves what it's best at it's comedy.I won't give more of the story away, so I'll move on to the acting and actors which was great. Though for me two stole the whole movie. First Nicolas Cage was simply great. His best movie since LORD OF WAR. Then there was Chloe Moretz as Hit Girl. This was a dangerous role playing a child who's killing people. I'm sure there's some in the media who will be appalled, but it's just a movie it has no bearing on society or the down fall of it. Chloe did a outstanding job blending he childishness with cold and calculating killer. The best was her chemistry with Cage, you could just tell they enjoyed working together and were having fun.The action and directing by Matthew Vaughn was extremely well done. The music was also really good.Kick Ass is the best movie of the year for me so far. I highly recommend this movie, I really don't think you'll be disappointed. I plan on seeing it again.

Kick-Ass: 7/10

Dave is a loser with a nerdy comicy brain. No one knew him at hisschool and his friends are just a bunch of losers. One day he saw a guybeing beat up by a bunch of thugs and decided to jump in a help withhis superhero costume. The video was captured and became an internetphenomenon. Everyone tried to figure out who was this guy and named hisKick-Ass. Kick-Ass became a pop icon just in days. After hearing aboutKick-Ass, hit men Big Daddy & Hit Girl decided to go after him to joinhim with their group. Going through lots of violence and profanity,Kick-Ass finally got that these two don't kid around. They killmercilessly, they enjoy taking lives, and they cuss like a bunch of NewYorkers. Kick-Ass is a refreshingly new film that adds to thecomic-action-films genre. Kudos to strong performances from crazyassNicolas Cage and the fouled-mouth Chloe Moretz. Kick Ass does exactly what it says on the label. Oh yeah.

Now being a fan of Matthew Vaughn's last two films, Kick-Ass clearlyseemed like his most controversial outing to date, without evencomparing it to his other work. Both Layer Cake and Stardust boththough enjoyable and well received felt like discrete nods to thedistributors that this man can do a fine job of directing no matterwhat the genre and that he deserves the room for development, sinceshowing he is capable of great potential. Then came along Kick-Ass, which easily is one of this years must see's,simply because it is nothing and everything like you expect. Example:Expect the costumes to look out of place, expect the C-word bomb froman 11 year old girl and expect a finale that almost makes the end ofKill Bill Volume 1 look like a fairytale. However what wasn't expectedwas the hilarious conversations between Big Daddy (Nic Cage as aEarless Batman) and his daughter Hit Girl (The awe inspiring ChloeMoretz) and the vast amount of violence, dark humour and the way itwalks all over society like another blood splattered corpse ofsatisfaction.Dave Livewski (Aaron Johnson) struggles to understand why there is noactive costumed vigilante's around in New York to stop crime, andthrough his comic inspired heroism decides to become Kick-Ass (The herothis time, not the film title). So with his cheesy green wetsuit, determination and lack of social life, Dave's roller-coaster begins. His near fatal experience's doesn't hinder his growing reputation orsuperhero buddies including Red Mist (Superbad's ChristopherMintz-Plasse) and the infamous father-daughter duo to bringingblood-blitzed peace to a crime-ridden city.Kick-Ass is a guilty pleasure that people shouldn't be ashamed to enjoyon the basis of the blaspheming and gore infested mass killings. Thereis a huge amount of likability for the leads who have all done justiceto make the most of their characters capabilities; Chloe Moretzdeserves particular credit to her notorious role by putting the 'Gonnablow your brains out' in well, just that. Matthew Vaughn has clearlyestablished himself as a man of many talents and after this it's nothard to see why, there is certainly room for a sequel on the horizon, that's for sure.

Nice concept, but average after that

I expected a silly super hero movie, although I knew from the extremelywell done publicity that it was a little different from that. Good jobmarketing team! However, besides the idea of a geeky Jewish kidbecoming a silly costumed defender of justice for no apparent reason, the rest was your average teenage hero movie. That doesn't mean it didn't deliver the kick ass action, the emotionalcontent and a little of that Peter and Mary-Jane thing, because it did.If you take Spiderman, remove his powers, make him even geekier (yes,it is possible) and then add a slightly demented Batman and hisdaughter in the movie as a secondary character, you get Kick Ass.The ending was a little disappointing, as well. If you beat the drumsabout the powerless every day kid super hero, don't create a ridiculousaction scene at the end that makes no sense tactically, anyway.Bottom line: good for a few laughs, but don't take it seriously.

Kick Ass by name and by nature.

Kick Ass starts from a promising point of view. What if anyone could take to the streets and exact protection orretribution in the role commonly associated with superheroes? Hmmm.Nice.What if most of these were kids? Hmmm nicer. What if some of them were ultra-tooled-up-mafia-hunting-vigilantes?Hmmm. Excellent. That's what you get with Kick Ass. It's a Smorgasbrod of superheroesfrom Dark Knight-esquire Batman (in 11 year old girl's clothes hummingalong to a Tarantino soundtrack) to a young Steve Martin in TheJerk-like loser role. And that's what makes this film ROCK. It really does. Its bad languageis at times shriek out loud funny. "Is that all you C**** have got?"yells 11 year old Hit Girl as she pumps lead into more brains than anepisode of University Challenge."Take that you Mother F******." When she gets angry.Hit Girl (Chloe Moretz) is the movie-stealing find of the decade. Sheis gobsmackingly in your face as she DESTROYS hundreds of armed thugs(think O-Ren Ishii in Kill Bill, or even better her teenage sidekickGogo Yubari). It's completely out of order, off the scale, outrageous and freakin'hilarious.Nicolas Cage is great as a scheming and revenging madman. The scenewhere he practices firing pump action bullets into Hit Girl's chest isunique and remarkable. This is a great movie. It sags a touch in the second act but opens andcloses like a wounded rhino.See.At all costs.

Terrorism for the eyes

Based on British writer Mark Millar's comic book series, this is anultraviolent satire from the writer/director team behind 2007'sStardust. Like that film, Kick-Ass tweaks the nipples of genreconvention to create something bold, distinctive and memorable. Unlikethat film, Kick-Ass's central love story is between a father anddaughter, the former educating the latter by shooting her in the chestwith a handgun from ten yards. The plot concerns a normal kid, Dave Lizewski (Nowhere Boy's AaronJohnson) – not an uber-geek or a ruffian – who dreams of being asuperhero. When a mugging leaves his nerve-endings ruined, heunwittingly finds himself allied with the twisted dream team of BigDaddy (Nic Cage) and Hit Girl (Chloe Moretz) as they seek to take downthe vicious crime-lord, Frank D'Amico (Mark Strong). Impalements,over-sized microwaves and dual-handgun ballet ensue. If film-making is a process of small judgements adding up to a singlewhole then Goldman and Vaughan get most the decisions right. The pacingis superb, with the snappy, fabulously foul-mouthed script bridging aseries of thrillingly inventive set-pieces, chief among which are HitGirl's introduction as she splatters the walls of a drug den to TheBanana Splits theme song (a possible reference to the grandfather ofthe modern superhero movie, Richard Donner), as well as a first-personperspective rescue mission played out to a re-working of John Murphy's"Kaneda's Death" theme from Danny Boyle's Sunshine. There are a couple of cons. D'Amico is a familiar mob boss withfamiliar patriarchal issues; he could have used a perversion or twoaside from bloodlust. And Big Daddy's old police buddy (Omari Hardwick)is unfortunately sidelined, destined to remain perennial backup, as iftoo damn honest to spoil the party. And what about Xander Berkeley'ssporadically glimpsed Gigante? Perhaps the sequel ("Balls to the Wall")will share the love more evenly. Unlike the bloodless, toothless, sexless Scott Pilgrim Versus theWorld, Kick-Ass spits vile anarchy from every orifice. Both films arewish- fulfilment fantasies for grown-up geeks, but while Scott Pilgrimreduces the sub-genre to 8-bit whimsy, Kick-Ass enhances it toglorious, eye- gouging HD.

What a great film this was! it got me interested from the start, thestoryline wasn't boring and kept the action going. When the 'bigdaddy'(Nicholas cage) died it was really sad :/ but the character 'hitgirl' plays a really good role by the young actress! i hope their is asequel due to red mist at the end. it was a really funny film and AaronJohnson played a really good part! i loved the cool superhero comicfeel and all of the effects and stunts. It was funny and thrilling, andthe action was great. The costumes were nicely done. actors playedreally well. all in all a film I'm definitely going to purchase on DVD!loved it!

Changing The Rules of Super Heros

Kick-Ass is a super hero, but not a super hero. This sounds a littlecrazy but this is a teen age kid who buys a suit on line, procures acouple of Iron Bars & then gets his ass kicked. For most of the film, the hero is the mirror image of the films title other than the firstreal film action sequence. While Kick-Ass is living his dream of Peter Parker style of life, hegets involved with a girl he loves. Meanwhile he meets Big Daddy & HitGirl who both are focused on destroying a crime boss that helped bigdaddy get sent to jail & killed his wife. For about a third of the filmthese two heroes carry the load for Kick-Ass. Then towards the end,Kick-Ass really does get involved in the action. This is Marvel Comics material carefully brought to film. While it doesnot flesh out as much story as Spiderman at times, it brings togethersome plot lines. The oldest actor in the film is Nicolas Cage & he isquite good as Big Daddy. In the end they get mob boss that big daddy wants to get because heharmed his family. This film is not quite as strong plot wise asSpidermen, but the Marvel Folks left this open for a sequel at the endof the movie.

HK Neo Reviews: Kiss-Ass

A fresh and innovative take on comic book heroes...Comic Book heroes can be fun and Kick-Ass delivers because it is fun.Without any superpowers, can you be a super hero. The answer to thismovie is yes, but on the way to the top, you need a car accident, meetsome real life superheroes and some fancy gadgets, then you are almostthere. Still, the movie plays with the audience's mind. I am sure, thata majority of you that grown up watching comic book heroes, dreamt ofthe day – saving the world, killing bad guys and getting the girlacross the horizon near the sunset. Such is the simplicity and fun thatKick-Ass generates. They are pretentious, but rather director MatthewVaughn, combines sleek action, colourful characters, witty dialogue andeven a tone of emotional core and in return creating a kick-ass of amovie.Aaron Johnson plays the lead role of an ordinary high schooler, wholongs and dreams of one day being a superhero. He is a likablecharacter that never seems over the top. While, it may well beunintentional, I believe that his comic timing is spot on. One scenethat catches the eye is when he confesses to the girl of his dreams(played by Lyndsy Fonseca). Nicholas Cage plays a supporting role asthe father and a real life superhero, avenging the death of his wife.Sounds cliché, but his character is nothing but cliché. Cage makes hischaracter mysterious and despite the violence that he preaches, one canimagine that only Cage can pull off such a character. However, thehighlight of the whole extravagant must be the emergence of Chloe GraceMoretz (the wise kid from 500 Days of Summer). Chloe easily plays acharacter beyond her age and whether her moves are effects or stuntsenhanced or not, she is the highlight of the movie. In one scene, whenshe entered the evil corporation with a school uniform, it reminds meof Kill Bill. There is no doubt that this kid have potential and rarelycan killing one person after another still equates plenty of fun.All in all, Kick-Ass is a great movie. For all it is worth, Ithoroughly enjoyed every moment of the ride. It is light-hearted, fun, bloody, realistic, bombastic and finally true to the blue of comicbooks. There is even can allusion to John Woo in a question that Cageasks his daughter, but even without that line, the famous 2 handed gunsequences is already Woo enough. Kick-Ass is a kind of movie that youeither like it or hate it and luckily, I am the latter. Maybe, I alsodream about being a superhero, but till that day, Kick-Ass works forme...(Neo 2010) I rate it 8/10

worst movie of 2010 (so far...)

This movie is worse than cot-death. I felt like dying from the firstsecond i saw Nichola Cage.. what a lame excuse for a human being. Thispoo storm of a movie makes the world worse. Just to think thatsomething this bad went through so many stages of production withoutanyone saying "hold on for one second, this is really bad!" made alittle bit of my soul die. Even Helen Keller wouldn't of liked thismovie. sigh...Worst movie of 2010 i reckon (so far...) Poor acting, (except for thelittle girl),thin predictable plot line, depressingly directed, poorand unrealistic character development, no allegorical undertones, nomoral message, just a pile of old old old socks. Sigh..A baby with an old Nokia could direct a better movie than this. How cansome people even like this movie. Every word that comes out of theactors mouths feel overly scripted, banal, boring, mass-market...Watching this movie is like catching your parents having sex, disgusting, embarrassing for everyone involved, gross, memory scarringand kind of depressing. If i was the director i'd take some time offand reassess my life.

Over hyped shallow crype

wow... after first seeing the advertisements for this movie i thoughtyea that this could be good, wow was i wrong. To start with the maincharacter is throughout the whole movie a complete cowardly wuss, his"super power" is a rather shallow attempt at making an original superpower and yet i noticed throughout the whole movie that he still actslike some geeky kid being beat up, i mean its not even a cool superpower all that it would do for him is allow him to 'NOT' notice thefact the he is now bleeding to death. then we come to BD who looks likea cheep knock off of bat man has no interesting lines and is quiteclearly brainwashing his daughter into murderer, wow good father ethicslol. the only good points in the whole movie would be a child killertotally trouncing professional killers lol, and the senseless violence, which is only a good part if you like death.so basically what I'm saying is that his movie is only entertaining ifyou like violence and death as there is no comedy at all in the movieaccept one or two totally failed jokes.

All clouds have a silver lining.

I didn't see Kick-Ass at a movie theatre, so I don't know how audiencesreacted to it. But judging by its rating here many people liked it. Iliked it too, and that's because it's the most original film I've seenin a while. Its violence and sexual content will turn off some viewersthough. The film centers around Dave Lizewski (Aaron Johnson), ateenager who wonders why there aren't any superheroes in real life. This thought leads him to try out being a superhero. The film'srealistic approach to this is often amusing. Did I mention that thereis violence? A bit of it is hard to watch on first viewing, but justwhen you think it's gone too far things turn around. Dave isn't reallya charismatic character. The film makes up for this with Hit-Girl(Chloe Moretz) and Big Daddy (Nicolas Cage). Hit-Girl is (at least forme) the star of the film. The girl's like a Mongol; determined, inventive and a great fighter. She doesn't have a lot of screen time, but whenever she's on screen things are more interesting. Moretz isvery good in the role; she has almost the same effect as Heath Ledger'sJoker in the Dark Knight (2008). In addition, she swears but in hercase it's just plain cool.Kick-Ass isn't just about the humour and the action. There's some goodcharacter development. Most of the fights are amazing, but the storyturns out to be good and varied as well. There are thrills as well asgenuine drama. The villains aren't a bunch of pushovers, so the heroesreally have to give it their all here. And then there is the effectiveuse of music. Yes, Kick-Ass has a lot going for it. Director MatthewVaughn should get much of the credit, but every actor delivers too.Last decade's comic book and action films were obviously an inspirationon Kick-Ass, especially Spider-Man (2002) and Kill Bill (2003).However, the film's hero elements seem more effective than those of itsinspirations. Because the fantasy elements are kept to a minimum herewhat the heroes go through really hits home. It's not easy to watchwhen they're in pain, but it's also thrilling when they succeed. Thefilmmakers smartly used this to good effect, especially in the secondhalf of the film, which is even more exciting than the first half. Andto top it all off Kick-Ass features one of the best (if not the best)uses of a bazooka in film. I recommend Kick-Ass; it even has a lot ofreplay value.

TERRIFIC LITTLE GEM

Mixed reviews did not bode well for this terrific little gem that lives up to the graphic novel and delivers an unvarnished, unfiltered take on the whole super hero syndrome in life and art. Profane and violent, here's what happens when you don a mail-order wetsuit and set out to fight crime. It gets painful and bloody fast as certain death beckons. And then you are saved by Big Daddy and Hit Girl -- a disturbed comic artist father, and adolescent daughter who are fearless, crazier than you and superbly trained in lethal martial arts. Good and evil have their showdown in a satisfying battle that for once lives up to the title. No doubt there's meaning here, but I'm still working it out. Not for all tastes.

What a blast!

This review is from: Kick-Ass (Three-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy) (Blu-ray) I rented this on appletv one night last weekend. I had heard some friends talk about it but hadn't really paid that much attention. OMG, I loved this movie. I bought a digital version on itunes, the blu-ray version of the movie, the comic book and the soundtrack. This movie just leaves you with a great feeling, but at the same time you want to know more about these characters'. I'll second what others have said, this is definitely my favorite movie this year.

Great customer service

This review is from: Kick-Ass (Three-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy) (Blu-ray) My order got screwed up. I was sent a single disk version instead of a three disk version. My money was refunded and I got to keep the single disk version I received. Can't argue that kind of treatment.

Other films should call themselves 'Ass-Kick'

A somewhat unlikely mating of Juno, Kill Bill, and Fight Club culminatein the ugly duckling brother of Watchmen. The rather cute and bloodysibling does not disappoint; and it's not what one would expect fromtrailers and previous movies about superheroes. The movie delivers anaction-packed thrill ride, while breaking the mold of tried and trueaction films of past. Kick-Ass gets an 'R' rating, and though somescenes seem to pull off an almost Disney- esquire, feel-good vibe, it'snot one for the kiddies. But if you can get a baby sitter and silenceyour prude inner-self, there's one hell of a smart and witty showing, within this fun, if slightly overcast, film.It begins with the typically troubled geeky-boy character (AaronJohnson) finding himself as a superhero, Kick-Ass. In his new line ofwork he soon meets Big Daddy and Hit-Girl: two 'real deal' superheroesvery capable and very lethal in what they do. He is drawn into takingdown a New York City Mob-Boss (Mark Strong of Stardust), and strugglesto simultaneously fight crime and keep his normal life in order. On theway, he also meets Red Mist (McLovin of Superbad), another superherowho is similarly struggling within his own life. Through the vertigo ofhis new life, Kick-Ass soon realizes that he's gotten himself deeperinto the crime-fighting business than he ever wanted to be, and in lifeor death circumstances is forced to decide whether he wants to be anormal guy the rest of his life, or become a hero.Director Mathew Vaughn layers sadness, humor, and slightly startlingviolence within a story of growing up and taking down bad guys. Basedon the comic book by Mark Miller, the movie carries over somefascinating cinematography, and exciting ideas. Kick-Ass, for example,is very in-your-face and brutally physical, and his scenes show it. Thelovable Hit-Girl swears like a sailor and kills like 300's Leonidas;and as kick-ass as she is, she just isn't the cute little girl yousomehow want her to be. And Big Daddy, while his SWAT-like movement andKung-Fu fighting skills are awe-inspiring, his loving nature stillbrings a tear to your eye. All of the components of a typical actionmovie are present, but with all new characters and ideas blendedtogether in a fresh fun take on the classic in this yummy-liciouscut-throat-mocha frappe-jolly eccentric-cino. Kick-Ass leaves a nostalgic, almost melancholy taste in your mouth, anda longing for the earlier days when time was spent entertaining theidea of becoming a real-life superhero. It's got fantastic style, showered across fun characters and an engaging story line. This is thejoy ride of the year, careening past inhibitions and breaking throughlimits; smiles all around. Though a parody of sorts of the very genreit assimilates to, Kick-Ass is a surprisingly good addition to thecurrent superhero movie lineup. If only to compare to other superheromovies out there (Spiderman, Batman, Iron Man) and to the comic bookdays of old, it's worth a viewing just to discuss with the mates.Though not an instant classic, Kick-Ass looks like an abstract artgallery, sounds like a late-night comedy show, and kills like avideo-game. I highly recommend watching this movie as it is certain to leave you with a smile on your face

Before stepping into the auditorium of Kick-Ass i had heard many goodthings but was not expecting it to live up to the media hype. For the first half of the movie, even though i new i was watching agood film, i was left wondering where the media and fan based hype hadcome from as i thought Aaron Johnson's acting was less than an averageperformance and couldn't see how the story line would pick up withoutfalling into the typical super hero formula which we have seen so oftenfrom films such as spider man and the fantastic four. However by the time i had left the cinema it was a different story.this film had brought a huge smile to my face for many reasons; the waycomedy and action are fused together in an un-cheesy way which allowsyou to appreciate both, how a thirteen year old girl has been allowedto create so much gore, hoe it had left me and my friend so charmed andalso for it being a movie in which Nicolas Cage isn't a terribleactor...for once!I urge you to watch this film as it easily made its way into my top 3movies of 2010 so far which includes Hurt Locker, Shutter Island andnow Kick-Ass.
