Magical!I wonder how anyone could not like this movie? It has its faults as most things do, but overall it is pure magic. Rutger was FABULOUS as Navarre and Michelle was a ethereal and perfect Isabeau. The story is one that captures the imagination and draws one into its spell. Granted the music is a bit...80's, but that's when it was made and it had a certain nostalgic charm to it. You know what you are watching when you hear it. Although I loved Matthew Broderick in Ferris Bueller's Day Off, he would not be my first choice for Mouse, but as with the music, consider the time and enjoy the movie for what it was and still is -- pure magic. |

an haunting love storyI am a girl which like very much love stories and also very much movieswhich takes place in medieval time . So , I have to say that I loved thisfilm the first time I saw it and I continue to think about it withpleasure. Despite of a music a little inappropriated ( I don't think theyhavesynthezisors in the Middle -Edge...) , the scenery and the cast were verygood. I was really moved by the love story between the two protagonists (well , i don't know if you understand me , I am french and my english isperhaps not very good ... ) |

Dated but atmosphericLike so many other fantasy films of the 1980s, LADYHAWKE has datedbadly since first release. The score is particularly jarring, especially when it includes some soft rock that sits oddly out of placewith the pseudo-historical world of the storyline. Nevertheless, itproves to be a fairly engaging little movie that reminded me, oddlyenough, of the medieval mystery yarn THE NAME OF THE ROSE mixed withWILLOW, conjuring up a dangerous world dominated by corrupt religiousfigures and throwing some characters and their bizarre adventures intothe mix.The central curse which propels the storyline is cleverly achieved, andthe filmmakers employ some talented creatures to bring that story tolife. Unable to achieve the effects via limited special effectstechnology, the reliance instead is on the camera and performinganimals to trick the viewer, and it does that pretty well. There's atleast one absolutely splendid scene – where Rutger Hauer and MichellePfeiffer meet, just for an instant, as the sun rises – which, I wouldargue, makes the entire film worth sitting through, just for thosespellbinding seconds.Elsewhere, the film never slows down with a mix of tragedy, romance andknockabout comedy. As a way of introducing American children and youthsinto this fantasy world, Matthew Broderick is cast as a brash youngthief and we see much of the storyline evolve through his eyes. Thisisn't great, because I've never liked Broderick and he's onparticularly brattish form here, but the casting of Hauer as romanticlead more than makes up for Broderick's foibles. Watch out for a funcameo from Leo McKern (who seems to be having a ball) and John Wood asthe particularly obnoxious villain of the piece. The action is hardlyspectacular, but the end result is surprisingly watchable, thanks tothat inventive and well-thought-out storyline. |

Heroes come in all sorts of packages...The story for this movie is pretty straight-forward, so I'm not goingto spend much time on the plot. I first watched this movie when I was quite young-probably shortlyafter it was released (which would put me at 7 or 8 years of age). I havefond memories of watching this movie, it wasn't too scary or difficult tofollow. My fondness for the film grew over the years (when my girlish crushon a young Matthew Broderick became a teenaged crush on the handsome RutgerHauer). One thing that never bothered me was the music. I never reallynoticed it during the fight sequences. Then a friend of mine pointed it outa few years ago and now whenever I watch the movie I remember her unkindcomments about the choice of music and laugh out loud. I'm only mentioningthis because I checked other people's reviews of this film and a majority ofthem are about the music. For those Rutger Hauer and Michelle Pfeiffer fans out there, a word ofwarning: this really is Matthew Broderick's film. And for those who wantto see plenty of Michelle, she has even less screen time than Hauer. Thatsaid; Pfeiffer is still luminous, Hauer dashing and Broderick hilarious. Hedelivers some real zingers in this movie: "Not on the life of mymother-even if I knew who she was!" He proves that you don't have to be bigand strong to be a hero. This movie is equal parts fantasy, adventure, romance and comedy. Please, please try to overlook the blaring musical sequences-even now Idon't find them that awful, but I've always been one to focus on horribledialogue rather than horrible music. These characters are supposed to be French and I've heard some harshcomments about no one speaking French or with a French accent. Well, thatnever bothered me either. Did Kevin Costner speak with an English accent in"Prince of Thieves"? What about Jude Law in "Enemy at the Gates"-he wassupposed to be Russian. I think having these actors speak in fake Frenchaccents would've been a mistake. Nope, for me, this film is just perfect asis (okay, I concede: the music could be changed). If you're looking for a fun (and sometimes funny) ride check out thismovie! |

Magic, mystery and betrayal... my favourite film of all time.Michelle Pfeiffer - at her most ethereally beautiful... Rutger Hauer -at his most handsome.... throw in a superb performance by MatthewBroderick and a wonderfully tragicomic performance by the incomparableLeo McKern and you KNOW you are in for a treat!Phillipe Gaston, a thief (aka "the mouse") is the first person to everescape from the prison at Aquila. Soon cornered by the evil Bishop's men he is rescued and subsequentlybefriended by Etienne Navarre; former captain of the Bishop's guard;who now travels only by day - accompanied by his horse & a hawk. When the hawk is wounded in a fight; the previously controlled Navarreseems to go to pieces...Phillipe soon discovers the secret of their special bond and gains aninsight into the depths of the Bishop's depravity... Will he help Navarre exact his terrible revenge? Or will the words of the priest help temper Navarre's impatience?...all this and swordfights too... does it GET any better? Not in my opinion! |

Be entertainedI have a standard by which I judge all movies I view. "Good guys win; bad guys lose; good guy gets the girl." Every movie I watch had better fit this guideline. Most of the time, if it doesn't it isn't worth my time! Some people tend to overanalyze a film. If you watch this film, you will be entertained. Just sit back and enjoy! |

Simply superbThis is one of the best films ever made.Rutger Hauer, as always, is brilliant.Michelle Pfeiffer, of course, can do no wrong. The supporting cast (notably John Wood as the bishop) is firstrate. The marvelously funky music is *inspired*. Congratulations to AndrewPowellfor his bold choice - and not stitching us with some bland JamesHorner-ishrubbish, or worse, a 16th century style harpsichord score.People who say the direction needs polishing clearly haven't seen the filmoften enough. A film which improves which each viewing, as Ladyhawkedoes,is a rare and wonderful treat. |

NOT for widescreen TVs!This review is for the DVD only. The film itself is wonderful, one of my favorites of the whole decade. The DVD is two sided (one side is widescreen -the other is standard). Besides the poor quality of the video (definitely not remastered for DVD), the widescreen aspect is not truly widescreen. The whole frame is displayed, but when I set my TV's screen size to "Natural" it shows a standard window (i.e. black bars on the sides produced by the tv) with the widescreen picture in it (i.e. with black bars on the top and bottom produced by the dvd). So you're essentially watching the widescreen film, fit into a standard frame, in the center of your widescreen tv. If I set the TV screen size to widescreen (with the widescreen side of the dvd) the picture is stretched horizontally and has black bars on the top and bottom. It's such a shame because I love this movie and would like to see it in digital glory. Guess I'll have to wait til it comes out on HDDVD/BlueRay and hopefully they will fix thisproblem by then. |

Fantastic StoryThis an all around great movie. From the story to the acting. I'm really not one who is typically swayed by a love story. But I must say this was an excellent example of one that did just that. You feel inspired after watching it. If you like drama's its a must see, but even if you don't I would still have to recommend it. |

One of the best all-in-one genre moviesThis review is from: Ladyhawke Blu-Ray (Region Free) (Blu-ray) This is one of my favorite movies from the 80's. Hands down best movie that has all the genres in one film. Evenly balanced. I also recommend buying from this seller i would definitely buy again. I was told i would receive my item by a certain date and received it a lot sooner. Strongly recommend. |

ClassicI always enjoy watching Ladyhawke, it's such a great, timeless story of love and adventure. Rutger Hauer, Matthew Broderick and Michelle Pfieffer were clearly perfect for the parts in this film. The story of star-crossed lovers is classic but Broderick (as well as the 80s synth score) add a great sense of humor to the plot. Definitely a must-have for your DVD collection. Enjoy. |

An excellent film!!I have always loved this movie. My one complaint is the musical score - what were they thinking?!? The music is so inappropriate to the genre as to be almost laughable ... if it did not distract so much from the overall quality of the picture. I would give it five stars if it weren't for the score. However, the story and the cinematography are quality enough to offset the aural assault (though the special effects are very 1985). Mathhew Broderick is endearing, Rutger Hauer moody and Michelle Pfieffer is ... well ... Michelle Pfeiffer. A great film. |

Poorly directed (and scored) fantasyWe recently rented this film after not having seen it for about twentyyears. It has not held up well.I won't spend a lot of time commenting on the horrific soundtrack as somany other reviewers have already done yeoman-like work in that regard.Suffice to say that "Ladyhawke" perfectly demonstrates how a score canreally cripple a movie. Although, I do have to say that thankfully itis not a relentlessly constant presence, as some terrible scores havebeen in other films. However, there are other significant flaws with this movie that in mymind are actually worse than the soundtrack. For one, Rutger Hauer ismiscast as the hero Navarre and is not nearly appealing enough. Themain villain, by contrast, is not UNappealing enough, and as a resultyou don't have a good guy you root hard enough for nor a bad guy youroot hard enough against. The action sequences are likewise tepid. In fact, I would have to saythe most intense scene is not what is suppose to be the climactic fightscene at the end, but an earlier scene where Matthew Broderick'scharacter is trying to save the wolf which has broken through the ice. That is actually the most intense and convincing scene in the entiremovie. For me, the most poorly realized aspect of the film is the finale. There is a rather dull sword fight in a church between Navarre and theBishop's captain of the guard. They appear to be doing nothing buttrying to make a lot of noise with their swords. Meanwhile, all theextras in the church, as well as the evil bishop, Matthew Broderick'scharacter, and his friend the monk, just stand around like a bunch ofstiffs who weren't given any direction and don't know what to do withthemselves. That unnatural behavior becomes even more discomfiting asNavarre has his confrontation with the bishop. Nobody comes forward andtries to restrain him, nobody makes cries of distress or outrage oranything. It's cringeingly awful! Then, when Rutger Hauer and Michele Pfeiffer's characters are finallyreunited, it almost feels like director Donner just told them,"Tell youwhat, just ad lib some emotion for about ten minutes, I'm going to goout and get a coffee!" The crowd of bystanders awkwardly gathers aroundlike a pack of zombies while the pair give a very unconvincing andself-conscious performance. The scene has no dramatic pay-off andinstead seems to drag on forever.Best aspect of the film is the cinematography featuring beautifullocation shooting with real castles, ruins and mountainous settings. |

LadyhawkeGreat escapist movie. Also, has something to do with the Friesien being my favorite breed. Watch it again and again. Just have to ignore the social propaganda (Catholic church bad, Jewish main character good). |

Good!I'm not really all that into the Fantasy genre but I did like Ladyhawke and thought it was a very interesting movie and the love story of Isabeau and Etienne was beautiful and it was nice to see Rutger Hauer playing a nicer guy since he seems to mostly play villains so it was just nice to see him play Etienne. I also liked Matthew Broadrick he was just too cute. |

Great movieI stumbled across this movie a while back on VHS, and have been trying to find it on DVD as my other copy was fried from overuse. Yes, it's an older film, but in the way of a medieval romance film, it's very good. Lots of twists and turns, the actors are very good, and the work with the animals is great as well. I knew Matthey Broderick from Ferris Beuler's Day Off, and this younger actor is great to see! If you're up for a good 80's action romance set with knights and a romantic curse, this would be the movie! |

zaratimThis started out as maybe something, but at the first sword-fight I lost interest; the music gave it away as just another piece of crap with a superhero with superhero stunts and superhero lines and superhero imagination required to believe it. |
