"Letters to Juliet" isn't likable enough to watch"Letters to Juliet" was not as good as I was expecting it to be. It's aromantic drama about Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) trying to reconnectClaire (Vanessa Regrave) with her one true, long lost love. It playsout like a formulaic romantic comedy which is usually fine, except inthis case, it's not a romantic comedy and I don't think it was supposedto be this formulaic. All of the supporting characters are unlikable because the film needsto play up the discord between Sophie and the men in her life. But theyshould have provided something that we could appreciate in them otherthan Gael Garcia Bernal and Christopher Egan's good looks. Anybody whoknows there's more to a relationship than looks should avoid thismovie.Being the only likable character, Seyfried is required to carry usthroughout the film. She has the beauty and charm to do it, but hercharacter just isn't very interesting. She couldn't keep me watching. The need to reconnect with a soul mate from younger years between a manand woman who are now significantly older has been done before, anddone better than this. "The Notebook" (2004) has a slightly differentstory, but it's just so much better that I would recommend watchingthat again instead of "Letters to Juliet".Follow my blog Napierslogs' Movie Expositions athttp://napierslogs.blogspot.com |

Great product quality! This review is from: Letters to Juliet (DVD) I honestly can't remember how quickly this product was shipped to me, but that does imply that it didn't frustrate me in any memorable way. DVD came in perfect condition and was well packaged. I absolutely love the film - of course, as a chick-flick it's a bit cliche and predictable, but not /too/ cliche or predictable: the characters are not flat and immature but nicely three-dimensional and believable, and the plot has a few non-cliche twists which make it quite delightful. Being a Jane Austen/Bronte fan, I don't typically like fluffy romance, but this one cuts it. I would recommend it to anybody! |

Absolutely adorable!I love "Letters to Juliet!" It is an endearing, sweet story with a wonderful ending. It is a predictable chick flick but all of the actors fit their roles very well. Great movie! |

Beautiful scenery but a painfully predictable film with poor dialogueThe one strength of this movie is the beautiful scenery of Italy. It is typical Hollywood product - the four and five star movies are few and far between. Nearly everything that happens in this movie is entirely predictable. The dialogue is painfully poor - I actually felt sympathy for the actors at several points during this movie for having to follow the script. Vanessa Redgrave deserves better parts than this. In addition to these serious flaws, I was bothered by the main character's "issue" with her fiance. For her to be disappointed that he didn't want to do most of their activities together on this trip was understandable. But the viewer gets the impression that she wanted him to focus ONLY on her during this trip - a very childish and egocentric view of "true love."The friend I saw it with brought her 9 year old daughter and I saw no reason why the movie was rated PG. The 9 year old really liked it. |

A Definite Must See!This movie was really good. While the outcome was predictable (most romantic comedies are), the interaction between characters was great. I felt the storyline moved along nicely and had a lot of funny comments along the way. |

Classy MovieNo special effects, nobody shot, no foul language, no extreme action. This movie is too un-Hollywood to do well you would think. And that is where you would be dead wrong. This movie shows that the normal Hollywood garbage is way overrated. Check the last Action Flick out of Hollywood that scored higher than a B+. About 90% of all Hollywood movies today resort to excessive behavior as the basis of their entertainment. They think that is what is needed to sell. This movie proves them wrong. A good story about people who are real is what most folks prefer. That's why this moving is one of the very few that is scoring in the A category. Go see it - you will enjoy it and leave the cinema feeling good. |

Missed potentialSolid idea for a movie and definitely a nice way to spend 2 hours. Scenery is just OK for what Tuscany can offer....Verona shines but why film south of Siena in an off season? As for the storyline, both love stories fail completely. I was really kind because I love movies set in Italy to give it 2 stars. They should have taken the 90 minutes to make one love story shine or extended the movie 30 minutes to create 2 interesting love stories. I have no idea why the older couple were together other than a long time ago, they took long walks together. As for the younger couple, they completely fell flat. Their love, apparently, is based on the fact that they have loss in common and that is it. Hollywood was given a great idea set in a perfect county and really messed it up royally...go figure! |

If E-Mail existed 50 years ago, we would have been sparedThe only notable thing in Letters to Juliet is its the last time GaryWinick's name will headline a movie. He passed away this year ofterminal brain cancer. Not to disrespect the dead, but the passing ofdirector Gary Winick is hardly the same as if Steven Spielberg orMartin Scorsese had pegged it. That would be something to mourn about. From the onset of the Millennium, Winick went from edgy, indie filmslike Tadpole to mainstream slush like Letters to Juliet. Starting withthe tepid bodyswap comedy 13 Going On 30, Winick let himself beswallowed up by the romantic comedy genre, until he was turning outdrivel like Bride Wars and this.Letters to Juliet isn't as bad as Bride Wars. That film would have beena sad, dreary epitaph to end his career on. But neither is thisanything special. There is a bit more of a plot driving it than hispenultimate movie, but its a film unworthy of the talent on display.Amanda Seyfried is a lovely young woman with a promising future. Ifirst noticed her in Mean Girls in a supporting role, where she didenough of a good job of endearing me. She was then propelled to theA-list with the massive hit of Mamma Mia! The film unmoved me and I'mnot much of an ABBA fan, but I could see Seyfried coming into her own,and tapping into her true potential as a lead actress. With the odd exception of Jennifer's Body, Seyfried is in danger ofbecoming typecast in fluffy, romantic comedies like Dear John andLetters to Juliet. I think Seyfried has much more to offer as anactress. I would love for someone to cast her in a vehicle thatencompasses everything she has in her arsenal. Letters to Juliet is notthat movie. The Italian setting reminded me more than anything else of the WoodyAllen film, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, a warmer, humane and much funnierromantic comedy. As he sadly demonstrated in Bride Wars, Gary Winicklacks the ability to draw anything of substance out of the material, and instead substitutes simplistic storytelling all but written in redink.Sophie (Seyfried) is on a pre-honeymoon holiday with her fiancéeVictor. While staying in Verona, Victor is more interested inperfecting recipes for his restaurant than spending time with hisbudding bride to be. So the lonely Sophie wanders the streets of Veronaand encounters the "secretaries of Juliet."They pin letters to a wall in a courtyard that once belonged to Julietfrom Shakespeare's play. Letters from women who have had they're heartsbroken. Sophie becomes enchanted by a letter written 50 years ago froma woman called Claire. Claire lost touch with her beloved Lorenzo, andSophie answers it.Claire (Vanessa Redgrave) arrives with her refined grandson Charlie, and the three of them set off on a journey throughout Verona to reuniteClaire with Lorenzo. All the while Sophie and Charlie are falling forone another, forcing Sophie to reexamine her upcoming nuptials toVictor.Even before seeing the movie I had a problem with Letters to Juliet. The fact that women send letters voicing their private thoughts to afictitious woman from a Shakespearean play sounds like a cry for help. There are surely far better ways to deal with nursing a personalheartbreak. And wouldn't it be easier to track down Lorenzo through asimple skim of the phone book? The film almost justifies itself with engaging performances. Seyfriedis a natural lead actress and steps into the role with her usual charm. But I can see her struggling with the fluffy, undemanding materialWinick keeps forcing upon her. You can tell she wants to prove herself, but she's got nothing to go on.The one member of the cast who gives more than the film really deservesis Vanessa Redgrave. She rises above the frivolous plot with a graceand dignity that goes far beyond the call of duty. Her hunt for Lorenzocould seem mawkish in a lesser actresses hands, but she makes it seemsincere. The fact that she and Franco Nero (playing Lorenzo) aremarried in real life helps enormously. But even Winick doesn't see that, and instead focuses on the lessinteresting relationship between Sophie and Charlie. Everything aboutit moves in predictable circles. They start out hating each other, andthen eventually melt one another's resolve. She comes to see no futurewith Victor, and falls into Charlie's arms (on a balcony, of course)just as much as you'd expect. What kills the relationship's credibility more than anything isChristopher Egan. He's playing a role that surely would have been givento Ryan Phillippe a few years ago. Phillippe would have sizzled in therole but Egan disappoints. He's as flat as the Italian scenery, andeven Seyfried upstages him.Letters to Juliet is a rom-com that falls somewhere between the sunnydelights of Vicky Cristina Barcelona or the soul-searching of Lost inTranslation. Naturally it recaptures nothing of either. Pity this ideawasn't lost in the mail. |

What if ? two words which better define the meaning of inaction!Gerona was the location. Shakespeare the genius behind the legend and Juliet his most powerful heroine. One of the most beautiful places of the world. A city that breathes art, memory and history. This will be the location in which the power of love will undertake its glorious mission. When a female writer (Amanda Sygfried) flies with his fiancée (Garcia Bernal) tp spent their anticipated honey moon in search of an inspiring history, she will find a curiosity. There's a wall (a mythical gate of missing illusions) visited by many female tourists who, devoted and faithfully, come to send the letters to Juliet to find, recover or reencounter her love. Intrigued by this fact, she will introduce herself into this circle of ladies who respond every single letter. So, she will find a letter hidden behind a brick a letter sent 50 years ago, and when she firmly decides to answer it she will get into without imagining it, into a modern fable; a rampant love history ornamented by that splendid background, bewitching and captivating Italian atmosphere, where the time seems to have been frozen. This unexpected act will become to her a double happiness. Please, don't even this movie pass silently in front of you. You've got to watch this singular script, hovered and filled of humanity and radiant sentiment. Vanessa Redgrave and Franco Nero show a cosmic chemistry, and despite they play a secondary role, their brief performances are if I may, the driving force of the slow paced movie. |

Bit too fluffy at times but Seyfried makes this worth a viewing.Credit IMDb An American girl on vacation in Italy finds an unanswered"letter to Juliet" -- one of thousands of missives left at thefictional lover's Verona courtyard, which are typically answered by athe "secretaries of Juliet" -- and she goes on a quest to find thelovers referenced in the letter.I like the premise of this movie, and the characters surrounding it.What I didn't care for was how it got a bit too corny at times. The endfelt a bit far-fetched. The Italian scenery is nice to witness, andthis moves by harmlessly.Bottom line. Typical romance film, with a bit more class than others. It won't make your day, but if you can handle the fluff, it's a decenttime waster.6/10 |

CheesyThis review is from: Letters to Juliet (DVD) This movie was cheesy and predictable. Of course, the actresses were very good, but the actor who played Charlie was not at all likeable and there was no chemestry between Charlie and Sophie. I wish I had rented something else. |

Wonderful Romantic ComedyLetters to Juliet is about a young woman and her fiancé who travel toVerona, Italy for a sort of pre-honeymoon. Verona, Italy is the settingfor Romeo and Juliet. While there Sophie who is played by AmandaSeyfried, finds a letter in behind a rock where women from all overcome to write letters to Juliet. Sophie decides she needs to write backto Claire who is played by Vanessa Redgrave, even though it is from 50years ago. Sophie writes Claire and tells her she should come and findher long lost love. Claire takes her advice and travels to Italy withher grandson, Charlie, played by Christopher Egan, to find her loveLorenzo. The theme of the movie is true love. True love never fades and willlast an eternity. There is also nothing or no one that can stand in theway of true love. A film that this can be compared to would be TheNotebook because the characters stand the test of true love. The camera angles play an important role to the theme of this movie. The angles always capture the emotions on the characters faces. You arenever left wondering what the expression on their face is throughoutthe movie and the situations that arise. The lighting of film is verysoft which makes the expressions you see on the faces seem moreintense, like you can feel what they are seeing. The soundtrack of thefilm helps add to the location and makes it more romantic. The wholetime that they are in Italy the only music that is played is inItalian, which gives it a more real romantic feeling. In one scene Charlie makes a comment to Sophie and Claire about hisobjections to try and find Lorenzo 50 years later. Sophie comes back athim saying "I'm sorry; I didn't know that love has an expiration date. This is just one time where the theme is played out it dialogue. If you believe in true love and that nothing can stand in its way thenthis is definitely a movie for you. |

Sweet MovieI am a 50-year old straight guy and a bit of a romantic. I just spentthe last 2 hours weeping like a little girl. This movie was so sweetand charming and I thoroughly enjoyed it. They characters/actors,especially Vanessa Redgrave, were great. The storyline, although verypredictable was well executed. The scenery and photography wereexceptional especially the food and wine and scenes in the vineyards. This movie will quickly to go my must own list...right along LoveActually, Notting Hill and several other so called "Chick Flicks" thatstruck a chord with me. I have been waiting to see this movie since Isaw the trailers in the theaters months ago. I am glad it finally madeit to Netflix and especially glad that it was so good. |

Surprisingly Good MovieI had seen the previews for this movie around Christmas last year and knew I was going to get roped into seeing this with my wife when it came out. I do enjoy a good romantic comedy but thought this one looked a little to sappy. I was pleasantly surprised when my wife and I saw this movie today. It had just the right touch of humor and truly warmed the heart. It is a story of improbable love and destiny. If you like those to things blended together I think you will like this film.It is pretty predictible but I am of the mindset you go to a movie to be entertained and try not to overanalyze things to much. This is one you can sit back and enjoy and if you do not smile at the end, then you likely are not a fan of a good love story or destiny. Enjoy! |
