B ClarkIf you like stupid/goofy humor you are going to love this movie! It's especially good if you watch it late at night when you are a little tired, which is when I enjoy this kind of humor the most. That's when I saw it for the 1st time, and I was in tears through most of the movie because I was laughing so hard! |

It's unfortunate that all these people seem to have decided it's going to be worthwhile before they've even seen it.There has never been a worse movie made than this one. I have neverwanted to choke the living daylights out of a movie character. Untilnow. The mannerisms of the character, "MacGruber", had me seething. Theentire premise was idiotic. This is not a B grade comedy. Nor is it acult comedy. Do not waste your time.Awful, just terrible. Don't bother tarnishing your living soul withthis. You'll be wishing you heard of it. It all works, though, bringingme to tears more than once. The actors all come together nicely. Thefact that it is a true story takes what should have been mawkishnessand turns it into a thought-provoking film about the nature ofsuffering and God's goodness (a paradox that has driven countlessnumbers of people into agnosticism). The part that really drove it allhome to me was the ending.I'm a man who don't cry to much at movies or period for that matter butthis movie brougth it out of me.I could watch again and again |

Sometimes spot-on, other times disgustingly crudeA violent and shameless spoof, "MacGruber" sometimes hits the targetwith gags that accurately parody various clichés of the action genre ordemonstrate the title character's cluelessness; other times, the humorsinks lower-than-low, to the point where it becomes difficult to watch. The sex scene in the middle is a perfect example of both extremes: itbegins as a funny, smart scene which gets everything right (the music, the candles, etc.) and ends as an embarrassment for all involved, including the viewers. Will Forte has his moments (and way too manydick jokes), but he is outshone by his supporting cast (Ryan Phillipe,Kristen Wiig, Powers Boothe and Val Kilmer), all of whom play it(relatively) straight and are, thus, more effective. My favorite gag:the "water ambush". **1/2 out of 4. |

Celery sticksDon't expect very much and you will be pleasantly surprised. That's aterrible way to present a review for a movie, but really, don't expectvery much at all and you should enjoy this movie more than if you didexpect it to be hilarious. Will Forte does his best to carry the movie. He has the energy for it,you have to give him that much. He gets good support from Kristen Wiigand Ryan Phillippe and from time to time in Macgruber's villain asplayed by Val Kilmer. You'll be amazed on how far SNL writers can stretch a 45-second sketchwithout the premise becoming tiresome. Some jokes fall flat, but quitea lot of them hit pretty well. It's mindless comedy...just try andenjoy it...you just might. |

Macgruber! Bombed but Bold!Macgruber! Bombed at the box office but was sure enough a good comedy. The reason I think it bombed in the box office was because of thestupid attempt to make Shrek the Fourth. I think the Shrek moviesshould have stopped after the 3rd movie which was the worst. This moviehad some hilarious jokes. The jokes in the film were also not leftalone they restated the jokes through out the film which I thought wasa great idea on the director's part. At first when I heard this movie Iwas like HELL YEAH! Then I said to myself wait,….how are they going toturn a 30 second skit on SNL into a full length movie. I gotta say theypulled it off. It had a great script and great comedy. Will Forte'sfirst film wasn't that bad but, like I say with other OK movies theycan't compare to top films in the industry today.Visit my website for more of my reviews on movies and other topicsVist: TheRandomMind.com |

MacGruber is a pathetic movieThis review is from: MacGruber (Unrated Edition) (DVD) Save your money , this movie has few laughs and is one of the worst films of 2010.Seriously if this is the sort of garbage Hollywood are dishing up now then the movie industry is in trouble. If you want laughs watch Spy Hard or Pineapple Express , l can understand Val Kilmar making this film because he is a classic B grade actor these days. |

For THIS kind of movie, Macgruber scores highI never used to watch MacGuyver in the 80s but I get the gist of it. Even still, this comedy spoof works well for anyone familiar with A-Team antics and MacGuyver the show itself. This movie could be described as "intense absurdity". In spite of its comic value, the story actually seems to go somewhere and sucks you right into the melodrama of the moment. A moment later you are busting up with the ridiculousness of it. But after that you are once again pulled into the story, only to have the same cycle repeat itself, in a variety of ways, again and again. The film is surprisingly violent with MacGruber himself litterarly aiming to pull out the throats of his enemies. He accomplishes this more than once during the movie, re: isn't for the kiddies, in spite of its inanity. That and lots of gay innuendo - MacGruber in this film is one tweaked out action hero. Still, for the kind of film that it is, fitting somewhere in the Airplane, Police Academy, Hot Shots genre, it gets a good score for simutaneously having an interesting plot and being utterly ridiculous. This is not always my favorite kind of movie, but for what it is, it is a step above the rest. I watched it with friends and we all had a good laugh. It's totally stupid, but that's why you love it. We're counting on you, MacGruber!!! |

Will Forte is UnbearableHis 10 seconds in Beerfest was 10 times more funny than this. I can't believe how many critics were paid to praise this film, when I can't seem to find any enjoyment in it. The script is covered with cheesy dialogue that pays homage to old 80's/90's action movies, but none of it is funny. The homoerotic nonsense is just cringeworthy without the unintentional giggles. Macgruber's drawn out moaning in the bedroom is one extremely extended joke that started at a chuckle and ended with a headache. Yes, Macgruber is awful. I hate to say this because I had a lot of faith in it, but it lays waste to all the actors by denting their careers. Val Kilmer? Ryan Philippe? What could go wrong?I'm just trying to be helpful...SAVE your money. If you like watching full frontal and backside male nudity, and you laugh to the sight of vegetables in a males rectum, have a blast. There are those of us who enjoy taste in comedy like the recent Apatow efforts and the great comedies on television these days. Macgruber takes its formula from Year One and tries to cram vulgarity into one long joke that fails to be the least bit clever. Young kids will find this funny, but its insulting to make a R-rated movie that calls me the audience. I laughed a few times at some decent points of Forte's dialogue, but his big picture just made my stomache turn. You want a good spoof? Watch Hot Shots! They actually made fun of things in that movie instead of leaning on obessive gross jokes like a life-saving crutch. Epic fail, MacGruber. Epic Fail. |

MacGrubber is great! Pay no attention to the haters!I haven't laughed this much since BRUNO. Its great to see hard R ratedfilms. Humor for adults. Kids from this generation, maybe they'll getit. It is nuts to the wall funny. Will Forte gives a comedian's starmaking performance. The funny thing is that it really looks like anaction film. Some actors play it straight while Wiig and Forte pile onthe laughs. There are a couple of scenes that are just laugh out loudfunny. I gave a thunderous laugh, almost like a scream, I didn't care.Terms like upper decker will forever stay with me. It is probably thebest SNL movie since WAYNE'S WORLD, strike that, since THE BLUESBROTHERS. I didn't laugh as hard watching WAYNE'S WORLD. For a greattime, see this insane comedy. Classic Macgrubber! |

Let's go pound Cunth!Imagine Pineapple Express, Freddy Got Fingered, and all the classic Van Damme and Segal films and you get MacGruber. This film is f'ing hilarious. It's filled with a bunch of immature fart joke level humor and honestly some might call it a spoof of the action films of the 80's, but I felt like MacGruber was trying to honor those classics. Everyone was awesome in their roles, and I truly mean that. Everyone just nailed it. Very entertaining from start to finish. If you enjoy low level humor you should have no problem loving this film. |

MacGruber (2010)When a comedy has to name a character something as risqué as Dr. Cunth, for some easy accessible laughs, you know it isn't going to be the bestmaterial. Forte plays MacGruber, a spoof of MacGuyver (A show whichI've never seen), but from what I've seen he is supposed to be famousfor making ingenious weapons and gadgets from pretty much anything. Heonly does this twice in the movie before he picks up a gun. Phillippe,Kilmer, and Boothe keep straight faces which adds a little extra punchto their lackluster material. Forte, though he can be very funny, goestoo far with his role. It's all very simple enough, but it was light onlaughs. |

Better as a sketch. Much betterThere are some sights that I had hoped to go the rest of my life without witnessing, and now that I have seen "MacGruber," I can safely say that a nude Will Forte with a celery stalk protruding from a certain bodily orifice - not once, but twice - is one of them. "MacGruber" is based on a Saturday Night Live sketch which parodies the 80's show "MacGyver." Feature-length movies based on SNL sketches are like the little girl with the curl in the middle of her forehead: when they're good, they're very good, and when they're bad, they're horrid. This is one of the latter.MacGruber is a rather insecure man, despite supposedly being brilliant at assembling gadgets to detonate the bomb or whatever. He also seems to have a touch of ADD because he's often easily distracted while in the midst of a crisis. Although retired at the start of the movie, he's drafted to find a man who incidentally, murdered his fiance at the altar. (This is shown in vivid flashback.) He scorns the assistance of rookie Ryan Philippe, and assembles a crack team of top agents to help him on his quest, but this backfires. So he swallows his pride, takes Ryan Philippe and Kristen Wiig and goes to seek revenge. In the film's defense, I suppose you could argue that it's supposed to be goofy - it's a parody. But there are funny parodies and parodies where you keep waiting for the humor to arrive, and this was one of the latter. Is there anything positive I can write about the movie? Well, Kristen Wiig, as MacGruber's sidekick and love interest, is adorable, if underused, and Val Kilmer playing the villain is amusing. Still, it's not quite as bad as say, "It's Pat," or "Stuart Saves His Family" (to use older examples), but it's not good either. |

Will Forte needs serious help and that is a good thing.Hearing that this may be the best SNL movie since Wayne's World (1992),was the first selling point I needed to hear. I had to see this tobelieve it, even though I, kind of, liked A Night at the Roxbury (1998)too, so for me it hasn't been that long and, to be perfectly honest, Inever was a big fan of Wayne's World either, but I respected it forwhat it was. Also, at least for myself, there has been a lack ofsatirized action films since the demise of the Austin Powers movies andI think that void needed to be filled, so that too helped me with mydecision to see this film. So, off to MacGruber I went. My experiencewith the NBC version of MacGruber was lacking, but I had seen enough toget the idea, plus a friend filled me in with some of the back storytoo, so I was ready. However, the fact that this was a Rated R filmalso intrigued me, because I wanted to see how far they went beyond theNBC TV SNL version. I think going for the jugular with an R Rating mayhave been the wrong move however. We know MacGruber, the character, isnot a smart man. We know he achieves success with the same classicstyle of Inspector Clouseau, by accidentally solving the situation bystumbling through it. We know he is fashioned after MacGyver, butMacGruber has an edge. He has strange sexual issues. Where would themovie take this idea? It takes it to a very funny point than beats thehell out of it until you are tired of it and you think Will Forte needsserious help. There is some great comedy in this film and the story isfun too. Seeing Val Kilmer as the evil-mastermind was a nice touch too.Without giving anything away, it is interesting seeing the evolution ofForte's straight-man, Ryan Phillipe, take his character from normal toMacGruber-normal. The contrast between the two characters was very goodand matures to an interesting climax at the end of the film and KristenWiig, if she isn't already, will be as big as Tina Fey some day. Whatwe have here is a very funny film which stumbles over itself trying todig too deep into the potty-humor barrel and all you keep thinking isthat Will Forte is a twisted MF, but I do recommend seeing it if youcan handle all of that. |

Funnier than I thoughtFirst of all, it seems like this genre of movie ALWAYS gets a lowrating on this site. I rate the movie based on what it's MEANT to makeme do, which is laugh. I knew from watching the trailer that this moviewould be funny, but it was even funnier than that. There was this onescene that I didn't even see coming, and it had me literally in tears(I was laughing so hard). I'm big on ANYTHING related to comedy.Comedians, comedy movies, comedy shows, etc. Believe me when I tell youthat this movie was hilarious. I can't wait to watch it again when itcomes out on DVD.The rating for this movie is 6.2 so far, and that's very low in myopinion. This movie also keeps you laughing pretty consistently too. There isn't a long stretch of the movie that wasn't funny. Even duringthe credits, it was kinda funny (I suggest that you stick around forthose). When it comes to comedy movies, I can't pay attention to this site. With anything else though, I can. |

"MacGruber" is MacRotten! This "Saturday Night Live" inspired spoof of the legendary Richard DeanAnderson ABC-TV adventure series "MacGyver" (1985-92) has its moments.Trouble is those moments are few. Freshman writer & director JormaTaccone with "Saturday Night Live" scenarists Will Forte and JohnSolomon display a conspicuous lack of wit. The moronic humor in"MacGruber" yields lowest common denominator chuckles seasoned with anR-rated surfeit of F-bombs. For example, the only reason the dastardlyDieter Von Cunth has such an anatomical name is so the good guys canuse it as often as possible without appearing profane. The gratuitousabuse of the villain's surname quickly wears this joke out in no time.MacGruber turns into MacGoober whenever the shenanigans hit the fan. Heuses a buddy as a shield from three men armed with machine guns becausehe is so pusillanimous. Again, the humor is largely tasteless, infantile, and ad nauseam repetitive. Although he is a highly decoratedGreen Beret, Navy SEAL, and Army Ranger, our hero amounts to acompletely clueless '80s-style action hero. MacGruber turns intoMacGoober whenever the shenanigans hit the fan. Rarely do MacGruber'sspontaneous improvisational acts pay off. Remember, the real MacGyvershunned guns and converted ordinary household items into weapons.Nevertheless, MacGruber lacks the charisma of either Steve Martin'sInspector Clouseau or Steve Carrell's Maxwell Smart. MacGruber is socolossally arrogant you feel no sympathy for him when he is reduced tosoliciting oral sex. MacGruber qualifies as a MacIdiot."MacGruber" opens in Siberia after the villain's henchmen haveknocked-off a Russian convoy transporting the X-5 nuclear warhead.Dieter Von Cunth (Val Kilmer of "Tombstone") smuggles the X-5 into theUnited States, but he still needs the pass codes to fire the missile. In Rio Bamba, Ecuador, Colonel Jim Faith (Powers Boothe of "ExtremePrejudice") and Lieutenant Dixon Piper (Ryan Phillippe of "Chaos")track down MacGruber to a remote monastery where the retired specialops legend exiled himself since his wife's death. Like John Rambo'smentor Colonel Samuel Trautman, Colonel Faith taught MacGruber (WillForte with an 80's mullet) everything he knows. Well, everything butexecuting a back flip. MacGruber has misled everybody into thinkingthat he has been deceased for a decade. He has withdrawn from the humanrace. He considers himself a man of peace. Colonel Faith explains thatDieter has stolen a dangerous nuclear warhead and has it aimed atWashington, D.C. Predictably, MacGruber refuses to recover the warhead so Faith appealsto his sense of vengeance. It seems Dieter blew MacGruber's bride CaseyJanine Fitzpatrick ("Saturday Night Live" cohort Maya Rudolph of"Idiocracy") to smithereens at their wedding. Later, we learn thatMacGruber seduced Casey from Dieter and told her to abort Dieter'sunborn child. Ostensibly, this is the reason that Dieter kills Casey. When a gung-ho Lieutenant Dixon Piper pleads to accompany him,MacGruber turns him down and tells him off. Our hero assembles his ownteam of brawny heroes. Clearly, these muscle-heads constituteMacGruber's 'dream team.' MacGruber slaps together homemade C-4explosives and stores them in the delivery van with his trigger-happy'dream team.' As our protagonist bids farewell to both Colonel Faithand Lieutenant Piper, the C-4 explosives demolish the delivery van andobliterate MacGruber's 'dream team.' MacGruber runs around hystericallybegging anybody to call 911. When Faith relieves MacGruber of themission, our rugged hero begs to be reinstated, he even offers toperform oral sex on Lieutenant Piper. Piper rebuffs the blow job fromMacGruber but agrees to join his team. Faith stipulates that the teammust have three members. MacGruber recruits former aide-de-camp VickiSt. Elmo (Kristen Wiig of "Whip It"), and Vicki winds putting her neckas well as other anatomical parts on the line. Basically, "MacGruber"ridicules the conventional of formulaic, high-octane,testosterone-laced male actioneers. Unfortunately, it lacks both theoutlandish budget and insane hilarity of "Tropic Thunder." MacGrubertakes a slug in the thigh, and Vicki probes around with a pair ofpliers before she removes the bullet. Initially, she wanted to havenothing to do with MacGruber. Vicki harbors horrible memories ofMacGruber's wedding to Casey. When Dieter blew up Casey, Casey showeredher best friend Vicki with blood. When MacGruber found her, Vicki hadembarked upon a career as a musician. She realizes that she cannotresist being around MacGruber and joins MacGruber. Consequently,MacGruber demonstrates his lack of courage when he dresses Vicki tolook like him so she can distract the opposition. Taccone stages several minor action sequences without flair. Guys blastaway at other, but the violence breaks no new ground compared to thelast "Rambo" sequel. "Indecent Proposal" lenser Brandon Trost makesthese low-budget antics look better than they have any right. Asidefrom one scene with an older woman posing nude for Dieter to paint, nudity is confined largely to our hero's bare buttocks. If "MacGruber"had been made in the 1980s, the only nudity would be beautiful femalenudity. At one point, Forte parades around with a piece of celeryprotruding from his bare buttocks as a way to distract the opposition.Later, Lieutenant Piper follows MacGruber's example. After he has sexwith Vicki, MacGruber visits his late wife's grave and has sex with heras a way to relieve his guilty conscience. A cemetery groundskeeperwatches in disbelief as a naked MacGruber has sex with an apparition.Of course, the groundskeeper cannot see Casey, but MacGruber believesthat she is there. Taccone saves the best scene for last. Our MacGoofyprotagonist finally triumphs over evildoer Val Kilmer. Not only doesMacGruber transform him into a sieve with his machine gun, but he alsoblasts Dieter with a grenade launcher. Were that not enough still,MacGruber urinates on Dieter's corpse. Too bad the previous 80 minuteswere not as insane and hare-brained. It is some consolation that thesoundtrack teems with classic Top-40 hits from the 1980. |

Over the top but funnyI've seen the MacGruber clips on SNL for awhile. I was surprised when I heard they were making the movie. I didn't think the clips were long enough to mold a movie from them. I was actually a little surprised, I didn't expect much, but this movie was pretty funny. You have to appreciate the 80's to see the humor. If you have never watch those 80's action movies & tv shows, then you may not "get it". Is this the best comedy I have seen? The funniest? No. However, if you are a SNL fan or can appreciate over the top comedy, then it's worth checking out. |

Better the first time I saw it… when it was called Austin Power: International Man of MysteryMacGruber (Will Forte) is an explosives specialist, fan of soft rock, and throat-snatching perfectionist. While in hiding, his archrivalDieter Von Cunth (Val Kilmer) hijacks a nuclear missile. Col. Faith(Powers Boothe) and Lt. Dixon Piper (Ryan Phillippe) talk MacGruberback into service. MacGruber gets back in touch with his sidekick Vicki(Kristen Wiig) and you've heard this plot before.MacGruber is based on a recurring Saturday Night Live sketch starringForte and Wigg, and unofficially called by the same name. The core ofthe sketch is that MacGruber needs to deactivate a bomb with the helpof Vicki handing him some miscellaneous items. He never succeeds.Naturally the film isn't simply the sketch on repeat, it makes aneffort to establish and embellish the MacGruber character. In MacGruberwe find out that he's not the least bit likable. He thinks only of hisown needs, strives to offend, and has little regard from human life.Unlike the common notion that he's based on MacGyver, he acts more likea hyper- obnoxious Austin Powers. Both are "the best" government agentsdespite evidence of the contrary, they are fishes out of water, andMcGruber even seems to be living out the past. Heck, it's a good thingCunth isn't half the villain Dr. Evil was or there would surely be alawsuit. Title sequences are traditionally one of the points where a film showsits most ambitious effects and editing. The biggest factor in thisallowance of flexibility is that we have adapted as an audience. Wegive an okay to non-diegetic material written across the screen. I'venever seen anyone complain that a movie broke the narrative or didn'tdisplay the appropriate levels of realism because characters weren'taware of the title appearing above them or that visually identifyingthe movie was a distraction. In a comedy, it's a point in the moviethat sets a tone by usually showcasing the character. MacGruber doesthis; the title sequence shows MacGruber doing his thing and defusing abomb. So what's the problem? Well the scene before this shows DieterVon Cunth acquiring the nuke. Then we see the title montage, and rightafter that Col. Faith and Lt. Piper are in a Jeep driving towardMacGruber's monastery. So that means the title montage was in the pastand bookended by scenes of the present. I don't think there is atechnical term to call this oversight, but if I find it jarring thensurely we can agree that something is amiss. With a budget of $10 million, MacGruber looks surprisingly wellproduced. It's directed by SNL writer Jorma Taccone and Brandon Trostreally comes through as the cinematographer, giving it a fresh lookthat breaks the stagnant mold set by other SNL sketch films. There are a few good efforts at comedy. There is an instance ofcreative use in subtitles. I liked the running gag involving the carstereo. Otherwise, it's a giant gross-out gag. Comedies like thisaren't supposed to be so offensive that they overshadow the humor.Austin Powers was an edge skating PG-13, but Power and Dr. Evil hadlikability. Indeed, MacGruber was better the first time I saw it… whenit was called Austin Power: International Man of Mystery. I'll eventake the second and third Powers films. |
