Story Line

Plot Summary:

Becky (Rachel McAdams) is a hard-working morning TV show producer, or at least she was until she got fired. Desperate to get a job, she finally gets an interview with Jerry (Jeff Goldblum) - who is desperate to hire a producer for the struggling show Daybreak. Becky accepts the job and it proves to be more difficult than even she might be able to handle. She has to fire the sexist co-host, then try to convince egotistical news reporter, Mike Pomeroy (Harrison Ford), to take the job, and then try and get him to actually do the job, properly. And she has to do this while falling for handsome Adam (Patrick Wilson), and trying to save the show from plummeting ratings. Will Becky be able to hold on to her dream job and her sanity?

Morning Glory defines "mainstream" cinema, the kind of safe, palatable film you could recommend to someone who has complained that Hollywood (for better or worse) doesn't make them like they used to.

Michell's camera swoops, the soundtrack swells, and that pretty little dress flaps artfully. Sensible suits, you see, don't waft in the wind.

A fun , sassy and intelligent romantic comedy...

Inspired a little bit from the classic comedy ''Devils Wear's Prada''Morning Glory is one of the year's best scripted movie. The story issimple and sweet , the characters are well adapted to the story and theactors that play them are as funny as ever... Rachel McAdams isprobably the most fit for the role of Becky the sweet and stressedproducer , she plays her character with such reality i believe in herrole. Harrison Ford & Diane Keaton are shinning in this , their duo arerevolting and funny as hell! Patrick Wilson as Becky's love interest isdoing a fare job but i wanted to see more of him in the movie ,sometimes i felt he was just there to fill McAdams loneliness , but onthe whole Morning Glory is this year's best comedy , it's intelligent ,fresh and natural we believe in every step and move it's more than achick flick movie it's human ...

Rachel McAdams, a once fetching actress, runs about as if "Fetch!" is the only cry coming from behind the camera. Fetch the joke; fetch the funny line-reading. Wave your arms about.

Wonderful

A great film. You'll feel better having watched it. The cast and the story are beliveable, delivering a full amount of cute, tasteful, and honest humor that only comes from real chemistry, great acting, and beautiful story telling.

As Mike Pomeroy might say "It's fluffy but subtly flavoured"

The opening scene of Becky (McAdams) on a date in a restaurant andmaking a complete omelette of the opportunity eggs is as precise a foreplay for what is to come as we need to guide us into the plot. In factthings get worse for Becky when she is fired in a very cruel way, andwe have barely passed the titles....McAdams plays a lovely but deeply flawed character, a hastily madeomelette on the surface but so richly layered underneath. If we need tobe sure of her capacity to shock us then there is nothing better than ameet with the staff when a whirl of questions is cast at her byseasoned pro's mocking the newbie. This is so cleverly scripted andplayed out and it works a treat.People are never worse than when life is not working the way they thinkit should and Becky's reaction is to work even harder when she reallycannot do anymore. Cue some decidedly clever screenplay to get themessage about what really counts at the heart of our lives and we aresucked into a story that just gets better. The comedy in this picture is all about how we see ourselves and howothers see us and why match ups to expectations don't always happennaturally. It is all about the messages we miss as we busily read thesurface so that our brains don't have to work. And set in a TV studiomost of the time how superficial do we have to be? Great performancesby Rachel McAdams, Harrison Ford, Diane Keaton, Jerome Weinstein, andmost of the other constituents in this very watchable, enjoyable, andlikable film.

Morning Glory is a breezy, delightful fall comedy that sparkles from start to finish, a fresh, welcome edition amidst the solemnity of the current Oscar bait season.

A much better comedy than I was expecting… Harrison Ford is great!

This is not the kind of film I would usually seek out; as some of youmay know I'm not a massive fan of comedies, particularly Hollywoodones. That said, I do remember the critics giving the performance ofHarrison Ford a bit of praise and so, as a bit of a fan of Mr Ford, Ithought I'd give it a look. Well, as Hollywood comedies go, this onewasn't too bad; I remember laughing out loud at least three times! Iwill give you my thoughts after this brief summary.Having just lost her job, young TV producer Becky Fuller lands a newjob at a New York based Network channel, IBS (yes, IBS, no misprint),where she has to rescue an ailing breakfast TV show. Her boss, JerryBarnes, hasn't given her long to turn the show around and so she goesin and immediately fires one of the anchors. She is allowed to replacehim, but she can't spend any money. She discovers that veteran newsman,Mike Pomeroy, is on contract to the studio and so she hires him. Thingsdo not get off to a good start when fellow anchor, Colleen Peck, another veteran, does not get on at all with Mike. Eventually they areready to go but Mike will only do hard news stories and everythinglooks doomed until Becky has a revelation… I won't say much more, butneedless to say there is the obligatory romance brewing in thebackground… OK, no more or the Spoiler Police will be axing my eveningslot on the Late Late Late Late show. The film looks great with some nice exterior shots of New Yorkfeaturing quite prominently. Birds seemed to feature quite a lot aswell (for some reason). I did notice that one of the producers was J.J.Abrams, so I'm not surprised it looked so good. As far as performancesgo, well, Rachel McAdams did a decent job as Becky Fuller, as didPatrick Wilson as her love interest, Adam Bennett. Jeff Goldblum wasefficient as her boss, Jerry Barnes and I thought John Pankow playedher exec producer, Lenny Bergman very well. Finally, I have to praiseboth Harrison Ford as Mike Pomeroy and Diane Keaton as Colleen Peck. Both were outstanding and (for me) made this mediocre film (IMO)watchable.I guess it is the subtle humour, combined with the two stand-outperformances that swung it for me. It's a fairly run-of-the-mill plotthat doesn't exactly tax the grey matter, but when you add to the mixsomeone like Harrison Ford it gives it a different dimension. I thinkyou can probably guess that I quite liked this one. It's not perfectthough; I found the character of Becky far too perky at times, butMcAdams did manage to carry it off (just). And so, unusually for me, aHollywood comedy is deemed… Recommended, if only for the two stand-outroles and some subtle humour. My score: 6.9/10.IMDb Score: 6.5/10 (based on 18,852 votes at the time of going topress).Rotten Tomatoes Score: 54/100 (based on 167 reviews counted at the timeof going to press).

Enjoyable

It appeared more chick flicky than it actually was. Harrison Ford plays such a strong, likable character that he balances the neurotic main character nicely. It kept my attention through the entire movie. Its a decent comedy that I imagine most people can enjoy.

The way to succeed by doing everything wrong

It's about a girl who wants to save a morning show, and she decides theway to do that is to hire a serious anchorman (who hates being thereand won't help at all) and she endlessly tries to get him to do stupidmorning crap. Then she decides to have the show go crazy and do wacky things likehave the weatherman deliver the weather as he's on a roller coaster orsky diving, which gets more viewers but (1) upsets the seriousnewscaster even more and (2) doesn't gain enough viewers to save theshow and it is going to be canceled. She knows in her heart that she just needs this serious man to do fluffpieces (because that will save the show!). Then he ignores her and getsthe scoop on a serious piece that exposes corruption by the governor. It's big news and he saves the show (by doing exactly what she said notto) and so she... succeeds!? Hooray! Then she (who did nothing correctyou may have noticed) gets a job offer from Good Morning America andshe's going to leave, but the serious news guy does a stupid fluffpiece (exactly the thing that wasn't getting viewers) to win her heartand she stays. What? Ack.

I like all the actors but this was just bad...bad script...bad directing...bad editing. DO NOT waste your time on this movie. Lets hope that they do better next time.

Cookie Cutter, but Cute

In that time between summer blockbusters and the full-on Oscar blitz istime for Hollywood to take a breather. Sometimes the audience takes abreather too. And that isn't necessarily a bad thing. Here we meetBecky Fuller, trying to make the jump from local to network news showproducer. She is put in charge of an ailing morning program, and whentold that it is on its last leg, she takes the novel and bizarre stepof forcing well-respected television journalist Mike Pomeroy into theco-host position via a quirk of his contract. and thus they are offtoward saving the show... A plot like this doesn't really have much inthe way of surprises. What really matters is how well the charactersare written and how well the actors play their respective parts. Whilenone of the cast is terrible, standing out are a low-key Jeff Goldblum, playing a cynical network executive. While an over stated, loudperformance would have sufficed, Goldblum plays it a pragmatic workingguy. He gets in a few good zingers early on though. The other standoutis Harrison Ford. While he hasn't had much success in the field, he isactually very good at comedy usually playing the straight man to whatis going on around him. Here he plays the gruffly lovable curmudgeonpretty well. A significant part of the the plot is his character'spersonal growth. On the whole, Morning Glory isn't going to sweep anyof the major awards, but it's a gentle way to pass two hours and get afew good laughs in the process.

Morning Glory

This review is from: Morning Glory [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray) It was probably the third worst movie I've seen. It spent the entire movie moving from one dissatisfied person to another. It was a complete downer until the very end. It just wasn't worth the time required from my day to get to the end. I made the poor assumption that with Harrison Ford and Diane Keaton in it, that it would be good. They must have bee really hungry to have signed up for this one.

Love it love it love it

I just love this movie! I saw it in theatre twice and rented it from redbox and proceeded to watch it two more times! I just love the dialogue and bantering from all of the characters. I think its a marvelous cast. I absolutely love Diane Keaton. She is the truth when it comes to acting. Rachel McAdams is perfect for this movie. She hits the nail on the head when it comes to nerotic workoholics. Harrison Ford is amazing. He fits into any role. I recommend watching it!

Great Movie...Why the poor box office??

In the vain of 1989 007's License to Kill (which was considered acommercial flop) or 2007's "Grindhouse" (which despite being fantastichad poor box office returns I am truly baffled by the mediocre to poorbox office showing of "Morning Glory". Many will disagree but "Licenseto Kill" I always thought was one of the best James Bond films. UAclaimed it was a poor marketing campaign that led to its commercialfailure (although over the years it has been regarded as a success dueto its international following) and the Weinstein Co. was counting on"Grindhouse" to be the success it needed. "Grindouse" wasfantastic...so why the poor showing? As a weak lead into "MorningGlory" I was surprised people didn't embrace this film. Much betterthan "The Devil Wears Prada" in the aspect I believe it did a betterjob of delivering the emotions and involving the viewer. Harrison Fordshines in a new role that plays to his age...Rachel McAdams was greatas the spunky, work-aholic trying to turn the program around, and thesupporting cast added terrific comedy. It starts a little slow butfinishes strong and leaves its mark. I can see why Ford chose to act inthe film. The script was smart and fast... Its a shame that films likethis go by the wayside. Since Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of theCrystal Skull Harrsion Ford has chosen his roles carefully. Neither"Extraordinary Measures" or "Morning Glory" did well, coupled with thedisappointment of 2006'S "Firewall" which was fantastic. Are peopletuned out to Harrison Ford these days? One of the most prolific actorsof the last 30 years? Between the disappearing act by Mel Gibson, thefade of Ford, and the slow down of Hanks....its hard to find moviesthat are acted as well as those three actors. I hope that "Cowboys andAliens" becomes the hit that Ford needs...Then a true ride into thesunset with an "Indy 5" that gives the actor that gave us Han Solo,Indiana Jones, Jack Ryan, and Air Force One gets the farewell hedeserves.

Good one

Well, I believe I can say for certain - this movie finally transformedRachel McAdams to big star for me. I can't truly distinct any of herprevious roles as grand breakthrough one (like Cameron Diaz in mask),but in every movie she ever made, she looks charming and intocharacter. It also feels like her roles have added up to her newstardom status - well she paid her dues. Harrison Ford looks mature andgraceful, though it's a little sad when one of the biggest stars of thepast, loses his A list status, and moves to support roles(if it's alead, than in a lot of cases it looks a bit pathetic). The chemistrybetween the actors works perfectly despite the feeling that Rachel is abit too beautiful for that part. The ending is a bit weak. It leavesyou with general feeling that too much stuff is untold in the mainstoryline. Anyway worth to spend couple of hours.

Not glorious but, not bad either, the cast is very nice

Becky (Rachel McAdams) is a television producer in New Jersey and hasheard rumors that she is about to receive a promotion. Instead, mostunhappily, the company is letting her go. She has to move back in withher mother, listen to her parent mildly belittle her and send out ahundred fresh resumes. Joy of joys, an executive, Jerry (Jeff Goldblum)does call! But, the available job is a morning show in New York City, local, which consistently lags behind the three network offerings andcable, too. Pay is likewise lousy. After lobbying hard for theposition, Becky gets the job. Problems immediately arise. The maleanchor is a lech and Becky fires him almost at once. Jerry is notpleased, for the budget doesn't call for the hiring of a replacement. Then, too, the female anchor, Colleen (Diane Keaton) has been on thejob for over twenty years and is a minor prima donna. The weatherman isupbeat but strange and a female reporter wants to do only the mostbizarre of tales. Undeterred, Becky finds a down-and-out newsman, Mike(Harrison Ford) who is still contracted to their parent company andpersuades/needles him to be the new anchor. From the get-go, Mike andColleen hate each other and Mike refuses to do any stories that heconsiders "fluff". He also recites his lines in a monotone and doesn'toffer any color whatsoever. With the ratings slipping even further,Becky convinces Jerry that she can go for broke and save the show. Beckeven gets advice from another television man in the same officebuilding, handsome Adam (Patrick Wilson), who may be looking at theproducer with romantic eyes. Will Becky win at work and at romance?Hopefully! This is a good movie, but certainly not glorious. The scriptis just too uneven, though the essence of a fine tale is in the film. Therefore, the cast tries to make up the difference and almostsucceeds. McAdams is nice as the young producer while Keaton does herusual scene stealing with little effort. Goldblum, Wilson, and all ofthe lesser cast members are quite winning as well. Ford is the biggestmystery, for he does an acceptable job, that gets better as the filmrolls along but who sounds like he perpetually has a frog in his throatand can't project his feelings into words. Strange. The sets, costumes, and photography are certainly above average while the direction isfairly competent and lively. In short, no one needs to rush outimmediately to grab this one of the DVD store shelves. But, if thereare any fans of romantic comedy or the movie's cast members, you shouldarrange for a view sometime before the year is out.

Out-of-touch of today's 28 year old career-striving women

Written by Aline Brosh McKenna, "Morning Glory" is just like herprevious "The Devil Wears Prada" (2006), except set in the TV industryrather than fashion. The main plot of 28 year old Becky trying to landand keep her dream job while re-assessing what her dream job actuallyis, may be a repetitive plot, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.20-something women struggling with their careers are always relatablecharacters and it's something that we all go through. We see very little of Rachel McAdams' Becky getting her job, it's moretrying to keep her job in the face of an incorrigible co-worker. Iwould have liked to see McAdams examine herself and her career goalsmore and much less of Harrison Ford's snarkiness. As other reviewerspointed out, Ford has never been known for his subtlety and thatdownfall is clearly displayed here.McAdams' job as a TV morning show producer is out-of-reach for mostregular people and coupled with Ford's over-the-top, rude, egotisticalTV show co-host, that makes "Morning Glory" unaccessible and not veryrelatable. Which is a major problem for the film as it relies on theviewer's connection to Becky.I found "Morning Glory" out-of-touch of today's 28 year oldcareer-striving women, and as a result I couldn't relate much or getinvested in Becky's trials. I was only slightly disappointed as I wasexpecting that. And I can't recommend it even though McAdams is cuteand most of the acting is quite good.

Was not impressed

I was exhausted just trying to follow Rachel McAdams jumping here and there trying to save her job. I was not impressed by the bad language in this movie, I don't think it was THAT necessary.
