Story Line

Plot Summary:

Mr. Bean enters a church raffle and wins a vacation trip to France as well as a camcorder. After boarding a Eurostar train and arriving in Paris, the French language proves a barrier for Bean, as he struggles to get across the city to catch a train to the south of France from the Gare de Lyon. Taking time to order a meal, he finds the consumption of a seafood platter to be a challenge. Just before catching his train, he asks Emil, a Russian film director on his way to be a judge at the Cannes Film festival to use his camcorder to record his boarding, but accidentally causes Emil being left behind at the station. Bean attempts to cheer up the directors son Stepan as the train continues south but matters are made more hectic by the fact that Emil has reported his son to have been kidnapped and Bean losing his wallet and essential travel documents at a pay phone where he and Stepan attempt to contact Emil. Heading in the direction of Cannes, Bean finds himself in the cast and disrupting the flow of a commercial being shot by the egotistical director Carson Clay. He and Stepan finally hitch a ride with the young and vivacious actress Sabine who is heading to Cannes to attend the premiere of Clays film, in which she appears. After Bean sneaks into the showing, his camcorder images are destined to enliven the proceedings.

If you like Mr. Bean, you'll like this

This is a very enjoyable, clever movie. In reading some of thecomments, I've seen some comparisons to Buster Keaton and CharlieChaplin given Rowan Atkinson's vision as a performer, this is notsurprising. Atkinson envisions a character-in Bean's case, a sociallyinept, essentially harmless man-and superimposes this personality ontoother situations. This film is not the laugh-a-second, manic energy ofthe legendary television series, or the more contrived energy of Bean's1997 eponymous film. This film is more leisurely than the series, which is appropriate for afilm, as opposed to a 30 min. TV show (which the shows were, broadcastwithout commercials on BBC2 in the United Kingdom). The movie takesaccurate, if innocuous, but always entertaining, shots, at Hollywoodegos. The story follows Bean as he goes on vacation to France andmiscommunication occurs, although the miscommunication is mitigated bythe universality of Bean's awkward behavior. He is trying to get toCannes for the famous film festival but he becomes unintentionallyentangled with the young son of a prominent director (Willem Dafoe, having a great deal of fun poking fun at the oh-so-serious manner withwhich some Hollywood figures consider themselves) whose film is themain attraction at Cannes this year. In addition, he crosses paths withone of the stars of the film, Sabine (the lovely and charming Emma deCaunes). There are some great set pieces, typically Beanianembarrassing situations and sweet, kind-hearted humor. This film is not brain surgery. But it was largely missed amid the hypeand bombast of "event" movies during the summer. That said, this filmis much much funnier than most of those, and a nicer film.

Unfunny

Saw the preview today (24 March 2007) in S Wales. I can only hope it'snot the final version.I really wanted to laugh, but couldn't. The plot was thinner than awatered down bowl of minestrone soup. The cinema was shrouded withsilence when there should have been howls of laughter. They even cutthe scene from the trailer where Bean spills his coffee over a laptopwhilst on the train (my disappointed 7 year old daughter spotted that). My 3 year old son fell asleep half way through. The only highlights for were the moped-jacking, the marketdancing/opera sketch and Antoine de Caunes' daughter. Why did they postpone the US release until September? This will be out on DVD faster than a dodgy oyster can work its waythrough your digestive system.Unfortunately it follows the old adage - Good trailer, Sh*te film.

Hilarious!

This review is from: Mr. Bean: The Ultimate Collection (DVD) I found myself laughing again at Bean's silly antics. I bought this set to entertain young members of the family. They all enjoyed this set and I found it to be a great buy!

Great fun if you love Mr Bean and Brit humor

This review is from: Mr. Bean's Holiday (Widescreen Edition) (DVD) I am a gal who likes about anything from across the pond and Mr Bean is no exception. The nice thing is that my 9 and 7 yo dtrs got a ton of belly laughs from watching and frequently act out the scenes they loved--eating and dancing and singing and talking in another language. Will make you forget at least some of your troubles!

not at all good like the series

This move was not so good as i expected. In the first scene,BEan goesto the lottery place. When the announcer announces the winning numberas 919, Mr.Bean has that number but reads it in the opposite way, thatis 616. Hethrows the ticket with starts roaming in the toy train. Whenhe reaches the toy train, he finds a ticket( his own ticket) with thenumber 919 scrawled on it. When the announcer is about to pick anothernumber, he shouts that he has the number. He is sent for a holiday toCannes. I surely did not laugh on this stupid humor done in films manytimes. Then he takes a train and leaves for Cannes with his irritatingcamera which he carries all the way. He keeps looking through thecamera, which is very irritating and keeps taking videos of uselessthings. We have seen him doing the same thing in an old episode ofMr.Bean series. We then see a director who too is ready to go to Cannesfor the film festival. Mr.Bean leaves the train and leaves for thewrong place. From there, without looking where he is going, he walksstraight to the station. There he misses the train due to his dumbnessand decides to go to a restaurant. There the waiter advices to have seafood platter. The waiter brings the platter which, instead of havingfish and crabs, has puking things like oysters and odd sea animals.Mr.Bean starts having the oyster unwillingly . He gathers the oystersin the hotel's napkin and throws it into a lady's purse. Haven't weseen this before in an episode of the series of Mr.Bean? These thingslooked more Gross than being fun and I couldn't laugh at this. Then thelady, whose purse is full of oysters, puts her hands in it to removeher ringing mobile. By this time, Bean runs away and the lady screams, and surprisingly, I didn't laugh at all. These stupid things do notmake me laugh. Then he tells a man to take his video while he walks upto the train. The man is an actor who also is going to the Csnnes filmfestival and his son is in the train waiting for him. But because ofsome errors the man is left behind. He calls his son and tells him towait for him in the next station while the son gets very sad. Mr.Beantries to cheer him up in many ways ( all of them have already been seen) but the boy punches him in the face. in the next station the boy getsdown and Bean sees a drunkard trying to do something to the boy and sohe too gets down from the train and the drunkard goes away. WhenMr.Bean tries to get on the train, he sees that the boy has his camera. When he tries to take it, the train leaves away with Bean's suitcase. The boy tries to cheer him up by miming him which was slightlyhumorous. They then see the train but it doesn't stop. The father showsthem a board and tells them to phone on a number scrawled on it.Mr.Bean shoots the number on the camera but the last two numbers aremarred by his fingers. Then Mr.Bean makes a list of all numbers from 1to 99 and then starts dialing from the number ending with 01. When on03, the boy lifts the phone. It is the right number but as a maid picksit up, the boy thinks that it is wrong and he keeps the phone. They seea train stopping and they climb on it. But Bean finds that all themoney and the train tickets are left outside and so he tells the boy tohide and he himself hides in a bathroom but finds a man alreadyoccupying it. When the ticket collector opens the door, she finds themtogether. This scene made me laugh somehow. She throws the boy and Beanfrom the train. Mr. Bean starts dancing to get money. When he plats awoman's role carrying the boy in her hands and singing th opera, itmade me rock my seat at it was really funny. Then Mr.Bean loses his busticket and he runs to catch the flying ticket which gets attached to ahen's leg. He rides his cycle and follows the van with the hen in itand rides faster than a group of professional cyclists! This was reallyfunny but then it gets boring when he finds himself in a shooting sitefor an ad. He by mistake blows up the same director who is mentioned inthe starting. Then heroine of the ad takes him to Cannes but the boyrides off in another van with a group of singers, as Bean forgets totake the boy while trying to catch his ticket. He then meets the boylater and the three go to Cannes, but then the actress finds that thecops are searching for Mr.Bean. She tells them to dress up as women.Meanwhile. the same director who was blown up comes to the festival ingood condition! How come? Bean and the actress find out that thedirector, who was that actor himself in the movie, had cut her role. Hedecides to change the tape and show the videos of hers which he hadtaped in his camera. At last, the actor gets his son and Bean gets tosee the beach. The movie wasn't so good at all. Mr.Bean's facial expressions were sameand unfunny. The actress was good. THe boy looked a bit too woodyfaced. This movie should be only seen by people who either haven't seenBean at all or have tattooed their whole body with his face and not byothers.

Mr. Bean takes a holiday...

Rowan Atkinson returns as Mr. Bean, who just wants to go to the beach. After winning a raffle for a vacation package to lightmarish Cannes, France from pleasantly rainy England, Mr. Bean takes his complimentary camera to film the trip, immediately experiencing various hilarious mishaps, including dumping coffee on a laptop..., to misplacing his passport, train ticket, and inadvertently separating a boy and his father; wherein the two eventually become friends and cooperate together to raise money to contact the father and travel to Cannes. With his trusty camcorder chronicling the trip, Poor Mr. Bean experiences Murphy's Law at every turn, but somehow always manages to emerge from various predicaments all the better. Other scenes include a grueling raw shrimp sea food luncheon while under the gaze of a condescending Maitre'D, chasing a chicken on a bicycle across the French countryside, becoming stranded {getting confined in an outhouse}, and taking part in a film production wherein Bean dresses as a Nazi soldier {whose goose-stepping antics get him quite literally stuck}, dancing for coins, and even cross-dressing!While hitch-hiking, he meets a cute French girl named Sabine along the way, who just so happens to have a part in director "Carson Clay's" {Willem Defoe} boringly pretentious and exaggerated self-aggrandizing production at the Cannes film festival, ending up, through Mr. Bean's efforts, providing appropriate exposure for Sabine. Finally, through all the obstacles, a joyously blissful Mr. Bean reaches the beach, and the picture in the brochure comes to life. Towards the end, the film strangely becomes a musical, probably as an expression to convey the impression of an erstwhile European production, and actually manages to grant the viewer the sensation of being a tourist overall. While not quite as amusing as his adventure to America in the first Mr. Bean film, Mr. Bean's Holiday is still a welcomed, hilarious voyage into this most entertaining character. The more the better, in My opinion. The DVD also contains documentary material with interviews with the cast members including Rowan Atkinson. I was quite delightfully surprised to find a special package combination with the DVD, including a Mr. Bean bobble-head from the folks at Funko {who also brought us the hula devil girl and the Mr. Burns bank, among other whimsical items}, who has now taken his place by the viewing monitor.616 is 919...

Interesting.

This movie moves kind of slow and I thought it was just weird at first, but it turned out to be a pretty good movie. It is really slow and the humor is very dry, but it is funny and the ending is very good. My kids really liked it.

All in one place

This review is from: Mr. Bean: The Ultimate Collection (DVD) All of Mr. Bean in one place + the two movies. A little disappointed on Beans Holiday. The standard screen edition is the only format. On the 1st movie you can watch either.

Like fingernails on a chalkboard

How much you'll enjoy "Mr. Bean's Holiday" will depend in large part on your tolerance for Rowan Atkninson, a rubber-faced comedian who, with his broad physical humor and near-wordless pantomime, harkens back - in style if not in quality - to the silent greats like Chaplin, Keaton, Langdon, etc. In this installment, the British Mr. Bean wins the top prize in a local raffle - an all-expenses-paid trip to the French Riviera. The movie chronicles the havoc he leaves in his wake both on the way to his destination and in the South of France itself, culminating in a major ruckus at the Cannes Film Festival, no less (this is the best part of the movie, actually). The problem is that none of it really plays very well as comedy. After what feels like the longest credit sequence in motion picture history, Mr. Bean launches into a French restaurant bit that Lucille Ball had already done to perfection fifty years earlier. Things don't get much better from that point on, as Bean races from one pratfall-ridden disaster to another throughout the course of the movie. And, when all else fails, the filmmakers throw a hapless youngster - a boy who gets accidentally separated from his father at a train station - into the mix to turn this into Atkinson's own version of "The Kid." Mr. Bean may be funny to some, but to me he's just annoying and creepy - the visual equivalent of nails on a chalkboard perhaps. The grunting and groaning and monosyllabic muttering become unendurable over time, and the constant facial twitching and mugging for the camera don't do much to endear us to the character - or to the performer, for that matter - either. As a source of laughter, this Bean character is certainly an acquired taste and I'm perfectly willing to concede that there is something in all this labored farce that I simply don`t relate to. To each his own, I suppose.

Has Bean.

As a Rowan Atkinson fan - especially in his 'Blackadder' role - I washoping for big things from this movie. 'Mr Bean' the series was lessfunny, but Atkinson still had enough appeal and ingenuity to make theidea of a completely out-of-this-world dimwit work for half an hour.Unfortunately; it didn't translate to the big screen - not for me atany rate. From the outset, I found the visual gags corny in theextreme. And it just went from bad to worse.I've seen the 'Two Ronnies' do this kind of visual comedy many timesbefore and they were really funny. They were funny in a way thatAtkinson can only dream of. It was entirely appropriate that for somuch of the movie his companion was a child. Only children could fitthe role of players against the preposterously juvenile scenarios intowhich Mr Bean was immersed.About a third of the way through, I gave up. It was simply tooembarrassing to go on watching such sub 'Carry On' farce. This is strictly for die-hard Rowan Atkinson fans only. Lovers ofsuperior comedy such as 'Blackadder' will grieve at its utterpredictability and lack of wit.

Wow awful

This had to be the worst movies i have ever seen. I like movies and allbut this was a disgrace to movies and to Mr. Bean. AND THIS IS SUPPOSEDTO BE FOR CHILDREN?!?!?!?!? he was doing the German salute during WWIIwhen he got hired for that job as the solider in that commercial.Everything he did annoyed me. Like when he dropped his ticket on thebus step. I mean come on just move on, he had to chase it? It wasridiculous and the bike gets run over by and 18 wheeler and the camerais OK. Everything in this movie was annoying.I do not recommend to anybody. I don't want anybody to waste their timein watching this garbage. If i didn't have to give it a star I'd giveit 0 stars

Very enjoyable (and possibly last) entry in the Bean catalogue

This is something of a break in the Bean tradition in that it's agenuine feel-good film which doesn't have you reaching for themovie-sickness bag. You need know nothing about Mr Bean to understandand enjoy this film, as it makes no references to the earlier film orany of the TV shows. Bean, as usual, says very little during the filmand relies on visual gags and facial expressions to convey the storyand the humour.Although Rowan Atkinson is at his usual brilliant best, I can't helpthinking that 11 year old Max Baldry, who plays the son of one of theCannes Film Festival judges that gets separated from his father at atrain station due to Bean's antics, stole the show. His mimicking ofAtkinson on the bench in the train station is a classic worthy of aMarx Brothers film.Although Mr Bean has had a long run on TV and with his earlier, and Ifeel, weaker, film, the ideas in Mr Bean's Holiday are fresh, funny andhighly enjoyable. An excellent bit of light entertainment for all ages.Hopefully the rumours that this is the last appearance of Mr Bean arenot true.

Bean ruined and canned

If you enjoy watching a little brat slapping an old man in the face -it's your comedy.Suppose many people on this planet (judging by the gross income of$183,956,926 worldwide) have little knowledge of Russian culture, tostart with. Or at least the director of this flick did not bother tofind out a few basic things before shooting this mess of a movie.Russian people never slap people in the face on meeting. NEVER. So,showing a Russian kid slapping Bean in the face is one of the stupidestthings to witness. Well, maybe it was made for laughs? Not to me. RowanAtkinson, representing a dim-witted person, is trying to express somekind of delight during this kind of beating. It is painful to watchthis kind of scene - it is cheap, vulgar, and fictitious. Evendisgusting. This alone ruined the comedy. And if it's not enough, readfurther.Rowan Atkinson in this one looks old. Jumping about, making the samestupid faces (cf. "Bean"), etc. makes a viewer feel some kind ofdisillusionment and pity for the actor. Especially if you see it all inthe scenes where a vile kid is present too. Do you remember Mr CharlesChaplin? In his later movies he did not try the same "kick-in-the-butt"tricks but achieved the new heights, still keeping his unique style ofcomedy - THAT was craftsmanship. The original "Bean" movie was real, that's what was so important to me.Mad, bizarre, outrageous, disastrous, but at the same time – very trueto life. Every single scene was believable. But here when you watchBean inside a wooden closet on the road and a big truck smashes it topieces off-screen, while Bean gets away with it safe and sound, youreally feel cheated. If you want an unrealistic comedy you watch"Airplane" or "Naked Gun" - correct? So this was another little featurethat ruined the comedy for me.Another point. A question of love and female-male relationship. Bean asa character, who is supposed to be a nerd. And what do we see here? Ayoung beautiful actress is trying hard to keep a conversation with him,to be nice and interested. Her little talks in the car are quitepainful to hear. Absolutely unfunny, unrealistic, and even idiotic. Whyshould she give a damn about some old freaky penniless guy who didn'teven look cute? Something simple doesn't match here. And you feel it.It's another one to ruin the film. And was there any need to introduce some dumb "Oscar-like ceremony" anda big-name actor in the role of some modern director? Hardly. It madethe whole movie even more dull. For a real experience watch "Platoon"with that face in action. But there should have been at least one funny scene after all. Yes, therestaurant scene was all right. But a few funny minutes during thewhole drag are not rewarding. One of the worst comedies with many uncomfortable scenes to sitthrough. A 1 out of 10 (even this lowest mark cannot express my totaldisappointment with this flick that ruined not only itself, but Beancharacter as well). Thank you for attention.

Not the best of Bean

The movie starts with Mr Bean winning a prize.A holiday to Cannes, arecording VCR and is trying to get there by any means trough out themovie. However, this time Bean (Rowan Atkinson) it's not so funny hasit used to be. The first part of the movie is too melancholic for acomedy and the jokes don't seems to have the excepted effect as it usedto have. Faces and jokes seem to be a little bit pushed to make uslaugh and the result is a normal Sunday TV comedy and not the best ofBean by the way. Maybe if you are a big fan of Rowan Atkinson moviesyou'll like it but for those who are waiting for something like Mr Beanfirst appearance in the big screen , well, it's not going to happen.

(2013-05-14 11:06:37)

Fun comedy

Rowan Atkinson makes being funny appear easy, but he clearly works hard to entertain. His character doesn't have to say much at all in this movie to get the viewer roaring, his facial expressions and movements are hilarious on their own. Bean is a stumble bum with a big heart who never fails to just barely wiggle out of a mess.Chrissy K. McVay - Author

Mr. Bean strikes again!

Mr. Bean is predictable from the standpoint that you know he can't help but get himself, and those around him, in ridiculous situations. While the film is entertaining, some scenes are reminiscent of earlier Bean exploits. That said, if you're a Mr. Bean fan you can't afford to pass up the opportunity to see him in action during an otherwise relaxing vacation in the beaches south of France, and creating havoc no matter where he finds himself in the process of getting to his final destination.
