A very bad language movie

This movie states on the box that is is PG13 because of violence...It should state because of bad, bad language. It repeatedly used the name of God's Son, Jesus, my Savior, in a vain and bad way. Reguardless of what we paid for it, we tossed it in the garbage where it belongs. The movie plot got no where...taught no moral lessons ...encouraged no one. The retarded man was shot by his own friend in the end. Bad, Bad movie...don't buy it!

Of Mice and Men

Gary Sinese' 1992 version of"Of Mice and Men" written for the screen by Horton Foote is the closest tothe original Steinbeck classic to date capturing the very essence of theSteinbeck characters in exactly the same way I remember them when I firstread the book.

A Classic Film of the Importance of Friendship

John Steinback's classic, Of Mice and Men, is an amazing book. The characters speak to you and you actually care about what happens to them. I think that's one of the hardest things to get readers to feel-- to have them care. This wonderful film simply gives you a clearer image of what generally truly happened. When I first saw this film right after reading the book, I was quite surprised at how well suited the actors were for certain characters. I could imagine it, feel it, care about what happened next. Even though I had read the book, I was anxious and full of suspense to see what was next.As many have said, there are some scenes in the movie that didn't happen in the book. Such as the scene with Curly's wife and George. She flirts with him and George doesn't really know how to back away. However, in the book, it states that George clearly wants nothing to do with her. There are some scenes in the movie, probably two at the most, that never happen in the book. But, I guess, if you picture it and think the way the characters would react, you could see it happening at one point or another. All and all, I loved this movie. I rented it at first and had to buy it right after I returned it. Also, Gary Sinise fits George's part suprisingly very well. The two actors of Lennie and George were also the actors for the broadway version in Of Mice and Men, too! So they really know what they're doing, eh?Believe me, you'll be satisfied with this movie. It'll capture the hearts of both the young and old.

This is the best movie I've ever seen.

Though I've seen many tear-jerking movies, this one touched me most of all. The outcome totally shocked me. Every time I think of Lenny and the rabbits, I start to cry. It seemed so real.

Great book adaptation

This film will satisfy those who loved the Steinbeck book and want an adaptation as true as possible to the novel. The actors do a fine job portraying the characters. You'll enjoy this.

Fine adaptation that thrills and shocks consistently

Lennie (Malkovich) and George (Sinise) head to a ranch to carry outwork with a dream of one day owning their own land.Based on John Steinbeck's novel, Of Mice and Men is one of the classicdramas that creates controversy through a widespread use of real lifedifficult issues and is no surprise that it is of frequent use inEnglish GCSEs. Written in a highly scripted and imaginative way withhumour, drama and adventure, this is a timeless piece of literaturethat will go on and on and recall issues that were present in thedepression that are remerging in recent times with the credit crunchand lack of work and money in particular. Opening with a woman running away we see Lennie and George also runningaway and this slow motion montage juxtaposed with the light scorebrings you into a trance like state as the characters make their wayout of hiding and off to work. Lack of jobs, taking whatever work is offered, little money and noplace today might sound like a description of this past year but herewe see how it was equally difficult in the depression. It is throughGeorge that we get a real sense of how things have been. George is a negative middle aged guy wanting to settle down and has aburden to bear with Lennie. Lennie's child like manner has him anoutcast from places and when reaching the ranch we see how Lennie is aninstant outcast with his way of being. But through George we see howtolerable he really is and how the lack of work and life changes canaffect the human spirit.Of Mice and Men is more than just a drama however. The symbol ofappearances, the use of money, the good nature of strangers and theimportance of friendship are all covered. Again all issues that arestill present in today's culture that is all relative. Malkovich and Sinise give great performances and it is down to thescript that makes the stars shine in the way they do with particularmoments such as Lennie's animal loving in particular mesmerizing.Sinise's artistic direction works wonders with the motions of thestory. Of Mice and Men is a fine adaptation that lacks only on the oddturn but thrills, spills and shocks on a consistent basis and with themultitude of life problems, this is a fine preaching drama

A masterpiece

John Steinbeck's novel Of Mice And Men was first adapted to big screen in 1939. But there were two more remakes following this first version by Burgess Meredith. In 1992 Gary Sinise directed the latest version in which he himself plays George, an intelligent, hard-working man who takes care of Lennie, his intellectually handicapped friend.Lennie is a really warm-hearted childish guy who has a soft spot for petting soft things. He always says: 'I wanna tend the rabbits', which makes him appear like someone who cannot even harm a fly. But his inability to handle his strength gets him into trouble several times. John Malkovich (Lennie) did a great job in playing this simple-mindedness but I imagined Lennie as being a bit more amusing. In the scenes in which he wants George to tell him the story about their future (`We'll live on the fatta the land, that's it George!'), Malkovich's acting doesn't excite enough empathy, which was disappointing. But this flaw is made up for by the beautiful countryside which is shown exactly like it is described in the book. The great camera movement enables you to experience the life on an ordinary American ranch. It seems so close that you can almost smell the hay in the burning sun. Moreover, the `down the farm' dialect underlines the simplicity of the circumstances people lived in these days.To my mind the mis-en-scene was very well done because it corresponded almost to all of my expactations after reading the book. That's why I would say that Sinise has successfully turned John Steinbeck's story into an entertaining movie which is a masterpiece in it's own right.

A greatly done movie that made the book come alive

This movie was truley the best I have ever seen. I loved the actors and because I had read the book I knew the story. Seeing Geroge and Lennie come alive by two of the best actors ever was a treat. The movie made me laugh, cry, and cry some more. END

Excellent adaptation

When I read the book Of Mice and of Men, I found it difficult to bedrawn into the characters. It's not that I don't understand thehistorical context - my parents are children of the Depression. I justdidn't find George & Lenny believable. The tremendous performances ofMalkovich & Sinese solved this for me. They were utterly believable andboth did marvelous jobs interpreting their characters. Clearly, Gary Sinese did a great job with the direction. In addition tomaking the characters believable, he was able to play the movie outwith a very deliberate pace. Like a car wreck that takes place in slowmotion, the movie proceeds at a snail's pace through the few days fromGeorge & Lenny's arrival until the finale. The cinematography isvisually enchanting, and reinforced the sense of the importance ofthings other than wealth - natural beauty, good friends, a hard day'swork well done. I highly recommend this movie.

Faithful but flawed adaptation

Sinise's performance as an actor in the film is excellent but hisdirectionalthough faithful and competent is pretty uninspired. If that was all thatwas wrong, this would still be a great movie, but the major flaw in it israther more obvious almost from the start.Great actor though he is, John Malkovich is hopelessly mis-cast as Lennie. He tries hard, but in the main his performance is more repulsive thanchild-like and occasionally his lines are close to unintelligable justwhenthey need to be understood. This may be a faithful and accurate attempt byMalkovich at portraying a real person with disabilities, but Lennie reallyhas to be much more lovable for the story to work. The only time Malkovichcomes close to this is when he isn't speaking - for example when he'ssmuggling the puppy into the bunk-house.The film is very faithful to the novel but Steinbecks book wouldn't be aclassic if it was as flat as this film. I'd have loved to see what JohnHuston might have done with it if he'd been given the chance to direct itinthe 1940's

of mice and men

Of mice and menIn his interpretation of John Steinbeck's classic novel В„Of Mice and Men" as a movie, Gary Sinise did a very good job. As heart - moving the novel is as difficult it is for a director to reflect its emotions on screen. However, Gary Sinise using an adaptation by Horton Foote has reached much more than that. The story is about two vagabonds or migrant workers travelling together, looking for work on ranches to earn enough money to make their dream of having their own piece of land come true. Two men who are completely different in appearance and character prove that real friendship is possible.George, played by Gary Sinise, is the intelligent part of the duo, who takes care about his strong but simple-minded friend Lennie, excellently played by John Malkovich. The director didn't change much of the novel and that's one reason why the movie is as good as it is and with its perfectly chosen actors it's really worth seeing.

Of Mice and Men

Although Gary Sinise sometimes puts a little too much into the character, this movie is a 5-star for drama fans. John Malkovich's performance is brilliant and riveting. He seems the genuine article.

A guy don't need sense to be a nice fella

I haven't read the novel(with that said, it probably is superior tothis, as is almost invariably the case), and when I first heard thetitle of this, I was actually expecting it to have originated as aplay. Therefore, I can't comment on this as an adaptation of the sourcematerial. This is one of the only films that Sinise has directed, and Icertainly see reason to give him more chances to do so. The plot isgreat, and though you can sort of figure out fairly early whether ornot it will have a happy ending, it still holds surprises. This isabout the lowest in society, and the lack of chances and tolerance thatthey must endure. The acting is excellent, although I understand thatwhile Malkovich's performance makes Lennie come off as retarded, he wasnot as mentally debilitated in the book. With that said, he gives therole the gentle innocence that it needs. Every part is well-cast. Thecinematography and editing are nice without drawing attention tothemselves, and the well-written characters are what drive thecompelling story forward. There is a little violence and disturbingcontent in this, some of it strong. I recommend this to anyone matureenough for it. 8/10

Yep, this one

This review is from: Of Mice & Men (DVD) Make no mistake--the performances by Gary Sinise (he is the consummate George) and John Malkovich (he is the consummate Lennie) are what make this rendition of M & M the best. If you are a high school teacher who teaches the novel, I highly recommend this production to supplement the reading.

Good portrayal of the Essence of "Mice"

This review is from: Of Mice & Men (DVD) The essence of Steinbeck's novel is fairly accurate, if you can accept John Malkovich as the extremely physically powerful Lennie. Gary Sinise is a very good George.

Great Adaptation

This is one of the rare cases in which the movie is actually betterthan the book it was based on. John Malkovich was excellent as Lenny. He was completely believable in his part. Gary Sinise also did awonderful job as George. Aside from acting in the film, Gary Sinisealso directed and produced. There is nothing bad about the acting inthis movie that I can say. It was great. The movie was very faithful to the book, but it gave a much differentperspective on certain points, mainly Curley's wife. It was a veryinteresting adaptation, one that should not be missed. I wouldrecommend this movie to everyone, whether they have read the book ornot.

Gary Sinise did a wonderful job!

It's a powerful story based on the novel by John Steinbeck and the director also contrived to make it more unforgettable! the actors are all very talented, Gary Sinise and John Malkovich had already played the same roles at Steppenwolf in a play by Terry Kinney! It's a must!

Of Mice and Men

'Of Mice and Men' is a wonderful adaptation of Steinbecks novel starring, produced by and directed by Gary Sinise. Both Sinise and Malkovich turn out stellar performances and you are almost immediately engrossed in the story. I was SO thankful that this stayed faithful to the novel and wasn't ruined by the typical 'Hollywood' treatment, the power of the book stands up on it's own two feet without any additional tinkering! The locations were wonderful and that, coupled with the costumes, drew me in to the era being portrayed. Having read the book I was aware of the ending and yet it was still powerful and moving, a sign of a top film. I even found myself making links I hadn't previously considered as I watched this for the first time. Sinise has pulled off a masterly adaptation of the book and this comes highly recommended indeed. Well worth a viewing if you're studying this for school or not.Feel free to check out my blog which can be found on my profile page.
