Boog? Elliot? What happened?

This review is from: Open Season 3 (DVD) Open Season (the original movie) has a fond place in my heart. It was very good, thoughtful, and enjoyable. Of course it had the easiness of introdcuing us to our new furry friends while the sequels tried to fill out back- and new stories. 2 was okay, enjoybable. 3 is meh. It tries to shoehorn adult characterizations and situations into a kid's movie and the situations and characterizations all end up being pretty cardboard. The movie finds Boog getting dissed by his buddies when he's looking forward to "guy's weekend" (how many kids are going to go, "Yeah, I can relate to that?" so he goes it alone...sorta (he takes his stuffed bear) until he meets a circus and a bear who wants to trade places with him. Yeah, it's derivative but any kid who makes it through to this point won't care. Much of the movie keeps Boog and Elliot apart, which is a mistake. Part of the charm of the original is the odd couple appeal they enjoy. The new characters that are introduced quite frankly aren't likable, especially the Llama. I felt like I needed a towel every time he was on screen (maybe that was the point). The less said about him the better. In summary, the movie is worth it if you're a fan of the series and you can get it on the cheap. But don't expect it to eclipse the first two. Go back and watch the original again if you need you're talking animal fix.

When even your own daughter says its bad you better believe.

I watched OPEN SEASON 3 with a friend of mine and his daughter who wasactually a big fan of the first film and the second but this third filmI have to say was total and utter crap, I was annoyed as hell with thisfilm for two reasons and at one point my friend's daughter who is eightactually begged us to turn it off.1. The once likable Boog and Elliot have been reduced to two loud mouthoverly obnoxious idiots that are worse than a bunch off two year oldboys that throw temper tantrums and the rest of the characters wereloud and obnoxious too.2. The humor in this film was totally inappropriate for a kids movie,it was mostly a bunch of rude jokes I didn't get and I seriously doubtthat the initial target audience which I'm assuming are kids under tenwill get them either, although some kids have surprised me but itsstill not right.Overall, if Sony animation decides to bring out OPEN SEASON 4 and itsway worse than this, I would avoid their animated films like theplague.

I thought the movie was wonderful.... a great use of my time!

I loved this movie..... the plot was funny and my grandson and Ienjoyed it.... as it is an animated movie for children! However, Iguess I must be a big kid because I was locked on to it until the end!The relationship between the bear and the deer was complicated, howeverit showed how complex friendships can be. The movie also highlights howfriendships change when one of the friends gets married or has alifestyle change. I think it has a good message for kids. Also, themovie shows a female in a "control-type" role, I liked this quality. The 'mom' took care of everything, and made sure that the family wasworking correctly... so much like real life. I could see how young kidscould relate to this... Now I can't wait to see 1 and 2!

Garbage, Garbage, Garbage...

So, i saw Open Season 1 and 2, of course I wouldn't be watching 3 if Ididn't. And I actually enjoyed the first one. It was funny, it wascute. It had Martin Lawerence, Ashton Kutcher, and Patrick Warburton. Then cam Open Season 2, a movie in which, the plot was very lacking, but the characters were still fun. There was one character inparticular, a cat named Roger, who had this tendency to say the mostrandom, out of the box, unrelated things, and it would always make youchuckle. And it wasn't even what he said so much as how he said it.However, they made the mistake of changing voice actors for the maincharacters. Although Mike Epps did a good Boog too. Now, Open Season3... what a disaster... The best part about it was Roger from 2 was init, and had a few (and I mean VERY FEW) funny random lines, but theymade him smarter in this movie... well, sort of. And they managed tokill his character by making him less funny than in Open Season 2,which kind of ruined it for me.. Instead of having a funny line every10 minutes, he'd spend 5 minutes repeating the same line over and over.By the 5th or 6th time I heard him say "ooooh, meat snacks!" I hadfacepalmed so hard my neighbor could feel it. Aside from that, thestory sucked, the animation was horrible (very cheap and last minutelooking) and the whole thing felt like it was thrown together in anhour. It wasn't funny either. It ruined the trilogy for me. Saveyourself the torture and don't watch this garbage. Stick with 1 and 2.If you watch this one I promise it will ruin the series for you...now excuse me while I go wash my eyes out with acid...

A fantastic delight for the whole family!

Us parents had a chuckle and the kids had a hoot as we followed Boog to the Russian circus! They loved Mr. Weenie, and us grown-ups were delighted to have Crispin Hellion Glover as Fifi, the reformed toy poodle, proving Glover is still one the most far-out actors on the planet, and has certainly filled his father Danny's boots well. Can wait for more from the classic franchise! It's a must for the whole family.

Memorable, worthy, but not perfect

Open Season 3 was a good movie. By way of yahoo movie ratings I'd actually go a step further and say that it was memorable, because it definitly was, and therefore deserves that rating and title. It was one of the better family movies, and it was short and funny enough for your six year old (or rather my six year old) not to lose interest. It wasn't however perfect, neither does it come close to claiming "almost perfect" and it doesn't even come within 12 million miles (that's halfway around the earth for those of you who don't recognize, or find signifigance in that number) of claiming a spot on my personal best five movies I've ever seen in life list. However, that being said, I don't think the last 75 minutes I spent watching it were waisted either. The story was memorable, a B+ I'd say. It started with the somewhat depressing realization that somethings in life have to be taken care of before fun can commence, then moved on to the blatant denial of that fact, the quickly getting drunk as means of that denial, making a rash and ultimatly stupid (but not bad) decision, falling in love, and then having friends that are so close and trustworthy that they fix pretty much all of the problems that arose. It had a happy ending, that my family and kids enjoyed, and it had mature bits in it that I enjoyed too. All together it was slightly better than good. The acting fit together very well with the characters and moods of the movie. I'm not going to say it was perfect, not going to say it deserves an oscar, but it certainly got noticed by me. I'd give it a solid A. (Which in my mind is as close as you can come to an oscar, without actually getting one)The direction was good, not better than good, but not worse either. It was sometimes had to tell where they were going, or what the point was. But all in all I thought they did a good job. I give it a B.The visuals were about what you'd expect from a sony-pictures animated movie. The lip-sync was all good, it looked as real as it could have, I'm just not one for animated movies. I give it a C+.Overall I think it was a very good movie. Again, not going to be a highlight of your year, but not going to be 75 waisted minutes either. If you need to kill an hour and a half, and your family happens to be with you, I recomend watching it. It was good ... well ... hey, it was better. Overall B+. Watch it if you get a chance.

Open Season 3

This review is from: Open Season 3 (DVD) This was a cute, funny movie that the whole family can enjoy. We have all 3 Open Season Movies and each one is pretty good family entertainment. I would recommend this movie to those with or without children.

My kids *loved this movie!

Seriously, they can't stop watching it. I can actually leave them in front of the TV while I attend to work. I've watched it once through and *loved it.

the replacement cast and almost laughable animation make for a film that has few to no distinguishing features, other than its obvious low quality.

great for the kiddies

I have young twins, and they enjoyed this very much. Simple, positive messages about obligations to both friends and family. Cute animation. Didn't mind the different voice talent - the spirit of the characters was nicely retained. Looks very nice on Blu-Ray.

Stop at two next time

This review is from: Open Season 3 (DVD) Continuation of a themed cartoon series: voices keep changing - deteriorating - but the animals are delightful and it is not something that has to be heavily censored.

Good Luck With Everything.

Why does everyone think that kids are stupid or they can't actuallyspot a poorly made movie. I watched Open Season 1 and 2 before. IMOthey were fine children movies. Now, I have seen some weak animationsbefore but this really surprised me.I tried to laugh in this movie but I think my hand was busyfacepalming. In short, I regretted watching this movie. I thought maybethey will end with a bang and I would get some fond memories out of it,but no, they just ruined all the magic and probably made me hate thistrilogy.Unless you're a slow kid or just love these characters, I wouldrecommend you avoid this movie. Watch something else or try watchingsomething from the past.TL;DR, Life is short, don't waste it on this one.

I Made It Through 26 Minutes...

Just finished Open Season 1 and 2, so I felt obligated to watch thethird. I will usually watch any movie through to the end, regardless ofhow bad (...if only to see exactly how bad it will get). But 26 minutesinto this one, I stopped the movie to come here and read a few reviews. Now usually, I feel that many people like to come to IMDb and slammovies just for the sake of being mean. But I must say; in this case, Iagree with what most everyone else is saying here about this movie, andI don't feel bad that I won't be watching the rest. The voices are the first thing that throw you off, then you notice theanimation looks more like Saturday morning cartoons, just not as funny.Watch for yourself if you feel the reviews here are unfair. Afterwatching 26 minutes worth, I'd say most reviews here are beinggenerous.

It was O.K.

I didn't like voice acting and I didn't like some of the new characters. There were a few funny moments and the story was O.K. Not a too special cartoon, but it was all right to see it one time.

Great kids movie!

This review is from: Open Season 3 (DVD) This is a great kids movie! My nephew absolutely loves it. It seem in other reviews people were upset they did not have the original voices, but for kids it is close enough. Cute story line. We have watched about 30 times now!

Don't Buy - Wait To Rent Or For It To Come Out On Television

Light years below the first two films in writing, directing and character developement. The movie was filled with holes in the plot that even my 9 y/o could see through. She thought it was funny in some places, but even then, most of the obvious set-ups for jokes where not funny and there where several mis-fires. She hated the spitting Llama who just plain drools and slobbers. Combined the slobbbering with his "South American" accent and it is hard to understand what he is saying most of the time. Elliot the deer is, by virtue of the story, a non-existant factor and the chemistry between him and Boog the bear that helped make the others successful is completely gone. The dialogue is meandering and forced. Don't waste your money. Rent it or wait for it to come out on television.

Wearing the Charm of the Original Very Thin

When you think of milking an animated film franchise for all it's worth, usually DreamWorks comes to mind with properties like Shrek; that started out so original and comical but ended up feeling thin and worn out. Sony usually manages to duck the gun on such allegations because of the fact that they have such a smaller computer generated library in comparison but if the Open Season series is any indication, perhaps the finger need be pointed in their direction as well. The funny thing, to me anyway, is that the first Open Season (2006) was an entirely run-of-the-mill affair that did its best to hang with the likes of similar "talking animal" CG pieces like the Madagascar(s), Over the Hedge, The Wild and so on. The visuals were passable (but never astounding), the plot decent (but nothing overly clever) and the characters, ah yes, the characters were pretty darn good. A lot of this credit is undoubtedly due to the casting choices: Martin Lawrence as the house-broken grizzly Boog, Ashton Kutcher as the obnoxious deer sidekick Eliot, Gary Sinise as the redneck hunter Shaw, and Debra Messing as Boog's caretaker Beth. In short good characters managed to overcome the limitations of the plot structure and the humor found therein was genuinely appealing. Then came the sequel. 2008's Open Season 2 was much, much weaker by comparison. Sony opted for a second rate cast, presumably to keep the budget down, bypassed the theatrical route (direct-to-dvd), and pretty much cut every corner possible in the production process. It had a little bit of residual charm but it was quite clear that Sony was simply capitalizing on the names/ appeal of the original.Enter 2010's Open Season 3. How anyone could have figured replacing the B-list cast of the second film with a strictly C-list cast, cutting down the visuals budget and stretching the already paper-thin premise even further could result in anything short of disastrous is anybody's guess. And disastrous it is!This time Boog gets stiffed by all of his friends on an annual "guys only" retreat and ends up trading places with a devious grizzly in the Russian circus. I wish to stretch this synopsis into a full paragraph, but no exaggeration: that's about it. Perhaps I should also add that the domesticated cast (the dogs and cats) finds out that Boog's in the circus and rally to mount a rescue attempt but this is it boys and girls... Modern story telling at its finest. The show's production crew must have known that they had virtually nothing to work with here as indicated by the decision to revisit gags done to death the first two times around. Prepare for more abused rabbits, trashing of the mini-mart, and bad puns with Mr. Weenie's misguided family structure. Further taking away whatever attempts at honest humor that the first film established, Open Season 3 makes the move to slap stick scenes complete with "cartoon" sound effects seemingly copied and pasted directly from Loony Toons. The pacing is abysmal but then again re-read my plot synopsis and then try to stretch that across 75-minutes. Naturally scenes are going to meander around relying upon clichés, bad puns and sorry gags to keep young viewers involved. Adults will often find themselves involuntarily cringing at the onscreen floundering.Perhaps this would simply be considered a substandard affair if not for the fact that it completely desiccates what little charm remained of its characters after their second outing. Formerly 3-dimensional characters are reduced to their absolute lowest denominator this time around: The once goofy but innocent Eliot has been condensed to a blathering moron, the antagonist Toy Poodle Fifi returns short a couple gonads with a whole bunch of neutering gags, and even the ever-chuckle-inducing Patrick Warburton (David Puddy of Seinfeld fame) has been axed as the overly-buff deer Ian.In all this is a sad display of what happens when a corporation discovers that one of their franchises has earned a place in pop-culture strong enough succeed by namesake alone then decides to exploit it for all its worth. This one may be passable to very young viewers or individuals easily amused by simple visual gags but everyone else (especially fans of the original film) will undoubtedly be left wanting their 75-minutes back.

Not as good as as 1st one

The whole storyline was not good at all. The first one was good but this one is really bad!! The visuals look like a video game and the acting is pretty bad and boring. There is hardly any action and it's soo boring almost fell asleep through the movie. It also is not funny as it says it is. I was very disapointed about the movie. Wouldn't recommend it.

(2012-03-05 22:11:42)

Average funny movie

I really liked Open Season 1 and 2 wasn't bad. 3 just isn't as good. It did have the funny moments though, and I really liked the donkey or llama or whatever, he was funny.
