Plot Summary:
Our marriage, their wedding. Its lesson number one for any newly engaged couple, and Lucia (America Ferrera) and Marcus (Lance Gross) are no exception. In Our Family Wedding, they learn the hard way that the path to saying I do can be rife with familial strife. When they return from college and too suddenly announce their marriage plans, they soon discover that their fathers - two highly competitive over-the-top egos - can wreak a major amount of havoc on their special day. With insults flying and tempers running high, its anyones guess if the alpha dads (Forest Whitaker and Carlos Mencia) will survive to make it down the aisle in one piece. Lucias mother (Diana Maria Riva) is busy planning the wedding of her dreams and the only levelheaded one in the bunch is Angela (Regina King), the grooms fathers best friend and lawyer, who manages to keep her cool when the madness reaches a crescendo. With only weeks to plan their wedding, Lucia and Marcus soon discover the true meaning of love and find there is truth to the saying - that when you marry someone, you marry their entire family.

Rent before BuyingI DO NOT RECOMMEND FOR ANYONE TO BUY THIS MOVIE. I BOUGHT THE MOVIE THINKING IT WAS GOING TO BE GOOD JUST FROM SEEING THE PREVIEWS AMD WHAT A WASTE OF MONEY. THE MOVIE WAS FLAT OUT BORING, NO COMEDY. CARLOS MENCIA WORST PERSON THEY COULD'VE PICKED. MAYBE IF GEORGE LOPEZ STARED IN THE MOVIE MAYBE IT COULD'VE BEEN BETTER. IF YOU STILL WANT TO SEE IT FOR YOURSELF, I WOULD RENT IT BEFORE YOU BUY IT. TOO BAD I DIDN'T WAIT FOR IT TO GO TO THE $5 BIN AT WALMART. BUY IT THEN WHEN IT HITS THAT $5 MARK. |

Will love conquer all when a young couple from different backgrounds decide to marry?First of all, this was hardly the "worst film of the year" as onereviewer on this site wrote. THAT film was called "All About Steve."This one was in some ways a standard rom-com and yes, there weresimilarities to other films from "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" to"Meet the Fockers." But I find that all rom-coms have elements incommon,so what's the big deal? The big deal is that this film involvesa mixed race couple where neither one is white,in fact the girl isMexican-American and the boy is African-American,both college educatedand from families that are not poor. In fact the prospective groom'sfather has quite a bit of money, and the bride to be comes from a familythat ,if not rich,is at least solidly middle class. I see why thecritics, both professional and non, didn't "get it." None of the maincharacters is involved in gangs, drugs, or lives in the ghetto or thebarrio. There are no men dressed in drag pretending to be grandmotherseither . And there are no main characters that are white. No "bestfriend" no work buddy,no obnoxious boss. The plot involves people ofcolor having to bridge a cultural divide. Are there clichéd moments?Sure. Were the fathers sometimes over the top in their dealings withone another? You betcha! Have we seen this in other films that didn'tget nearly the lashing this one did? Certainly. I enjoyed this filmbecause ,in spite of the normal conventions of its genre,it showedpeople of color as normal families dealing with a situation they maynot like, but having to find a way to come together for the ones theylove. |

A real letdownOur Family Wedding proves that even a convoluted, stupid, clichéd storycan have a little bit of potential, but only a little bit. The filmstarts out with Lucia (America Ferarra) and Marcus (Lance Gross), aperfectly nice and seemingly happy engaged couple. The only problem isLucia did not tell her uptight dad named Miguel (Carlos Mencia).Miguel, not knowing what he has done, he tows Marcus's dad, Brad(Forest Whitaker) car. When they meet, they automatically startfighting, and that's essentially the film. While the cast is likable, and sometimes brings the film out of it slum, putting the great actingof Forest Whitaker and the recycled jokes of Carlos Mencia is juststupid. While it is funny at a couple of points watching the two fight,it's just tiring. I don't care how much they hate each other, I don'twant to see them fight all the movie. The last 30 minutes is anunnecessary make-up, break-up, over long wedding scene. The film got meto laugh a couple times, but I wanted my two hours back. Overall, OurFamily Wedding is not worth your time or money because most of it isunfunny and wastes a talented cast, and you won't miss anything if youdon't see it, so don't feel too bad if you miss it. |

"Los Vatos, cumplan los africanos americanos."Which movie has Hispanic-Americans, African-Americans, racial tension, traditions, a horny goat, and Lance Gross's spectacular abdominal muscles? Our Family Wedding!!The movie, centered around stereotypical attitudes harbored by minorities, is about an interracial couple planning to marry (Lance Gross and America Ferrera), though they have yet to discuss this detail with their parents and families. Throughout the course of the film, both families go through individual hardships as well as ones induced by the other, which provides needed comedic relief. Carlos Mencia and Forest Whitaker steal the scene with their crazy antics, so much so that they come close to ending the marriage completely. It's a must see!! Although it's not considered "Oscar-worthy," it highlights that family really does matter.Pros:The storyline, though not new, is pretty good; The characters are thoroughly developed and are fairly easy to remember; It is hilarious!! Who knew The Last King of Scotland was so funny?!Cons:The cheap shots thrown between the families are sometimes over-the-top and can be construed as down-right inappropriate, depending on your opinion.Overall, the light-hearted comedy was enjoyable and easy to watch. |

OkWatched this movie for a laugh but the laughs were few. Wife and I recognized some of the things in this movie from when we were engaged and getting married. Found this movie to lack something. Wasn't very funny and also didn't have what it takes to watch again. |

deja vui think there are too many of these movies these days. haven't we seensomething like this a couple of years back with Ashton Kutcher?? withthis movie its like im having a deja vu, and also very verypredictable, nothing new or cool about it. the lead actors are prettygood but the plot is cheap and meaningless. we have seen the wholedifferent culture uniting kinda thing, seriously we get the point noneed to repeat it a hundred times.while i was watching this, i was already imagining the ending and withno surprise it turned out exactly the way imagined it, thats howpredictable it is. don't waste your time, you have seen this before! |

Draft of a good script....Don't pay full price...Good idea that should have been developed more. Many dry spots but some funny stuff. It's like the first draft of a book with potential not meant to be published yet.. |

EnjoyableParts are overdone, but it was funny and enjoyable. Very true family issues and culture clashes. But a nice ending, no real surpries, really not a movie to take your kids to see even though I saw lots of them there. |

Two thumbs up...My family and I saw the movie last night. It was really good. We took our 13 yr old daughter and I would say that 90% of the movie was appropriate. It was funny, had a good story line and Mencia and Forest are top notch. The acting overall was very well done. Two thumbs up for Charley Murphy. |

A Rib TicklerHere's the deal: OUR FAMILY WEDDING is predictable, often forced, sometimes contrived, nonsensical, cliche-driven, and even lame in spots--but you'll still watch this heartwarming comedy with a grin on your mug. As love birds Marcus and Lucia (Lance Gross and the spectacular America Ferrera) plan their nuptials we witness a titanic clash of cultures, as Marcus is African-American, Lucia Hispanic. And both papas (Forest Whitaker and Carlos Mencia) can barely disguise their inherent biases, believing their respective child can do much better. Accordingly a mano-y-mano contest takes place, with both fathers going overboard to comedic contentment. Both Whitaker and Mencia have some hysterical moments; I'm still giggling over the 'Boys Night Out' scene at the local watering hole.Naturally the tension and lack of consensus over the wedding ceremony create a degenerating strain on Marcus and Lucia, culminating in predictable plot turns. Yet OUR FAMILY WEDDING has such a feel-good silver lining you're looking forward to the inevitable butterflies and kittens ending. Just be prepared for some really outrageous behaviour on the part of a goat before the ceremony begins. Alas, even goats need some luvin'. . .--D. Mikels, Esq. |

Very funny comedy about familyI am so shocked at the polarizing views on this movie. The ridiculoushigh standards placed on this simple film about its plot and purpose. This is no documentary. It is a very funny comedy about two families.Clearly, their is a significant amount of intellectual elitism thatexists over race in this country. From the amateur comments to theprofessional critics, the focus on racial elements of this film aremisguided and unwelcome. It is a comedy about two families that happento be Black and Latino. A 3 star rating is absurd compared to thevolumes of exploitative ethnic action and comedy flicks of completenonsense, and worn out plots that receive twice the rating. Clearly, this films subject matter prevents far too many from enjoying a simplecomedy by feeling like they must dissect this inter-racial plot intobeing something it is not. Lighten up! Can we all just get along?? |

Great family movieThis movie was rated pg-13 but we took our 9 year old and it seemed fine. The movie was very funny and was trully about family and how they came together to handle and understand a biracial relationship. It was hysterical. If you can't handle hearing afican american and latino slang like then you won't like it. If you can open up and just watch the movie and have fun with it then you'll like it. The morale of the story is working together to overcoming obstacles to become a family no matter what race you are. Go see it. |

too close to homeloved this movie. The message was very powerful delivered with immense humor. The cast i have to say was awesome to say the least. I guess its was so close to home because i had a similar dilemma and i didnt know what to expect from it. It help my wife and I get past some issues and we are as happy as Marcus and Lucia. Very good movie |

Forest Whitaker has a sexy radio talk show voice...But that's besides the point. I loved, loved, loved this movie! I amappalled IMDb, that this film has only received a 3.7/10 rating!Honestly, I was just making a review today about how the film industryneeds a fresh take on things, something different, and this movie isit. It's been taken too harshly. Most movies are guilty of a fewclichés here and there, but I felt this movie was so warm-hearted andgenuine, and had a lovely message come across. You gotta admit, it tookreal cojones to make a movie about relationships we see everyday, buthardly talk about, out loud: Interacial couples. It had to be done...it's the 21st century, and I can barely list on my 10 fingers how manygood films have been made about this topic. Guess Who (2005) comes tomind... but really, that's just sad that there aren't more interracialcouples incorporated into movies, especially the big-budget ones.Pieces of April (2003) is another one, one that isn't listed as acomedy, but is in its own sense. Movies like these are dying to bemade. There are so many cultures in the world, I would love to learnmore about them. I actually learned from this movie too. I knowtraditions were always important when it came to weddings, but I didn'tknow it went as far as sacrificing a goat (don't worry, they don'tactually do it). But I was cheering on Lucia (America Ferrera, lovethat girl) and Marcus (Lance Gross) the whole time.Just do it, watch this movie! It contains something soooo many moviesare seriously lacking these days: CHEMISTRY! They actually seem like areal family. Don't worry, Carlos Mencia's acting isn't as bad aseverybody says it is, Forest & Regina are just... bliss, I wish theyreally were a couple, and everyone else was just phenomenal. I didnotice the lady who plays America's grandmother (Lupe Ontiveros) alsoplayed her mother in Real Women Have Curves (2002)... which only addsto the amazing chemistry! Ciao for now. |
