Cartoon Western? Yeah! After seeing advertisements of this cartoon, I was not expectingsomething special, I thought that this is the second version of"WALL-E" just fun. But in reality, "Rango" - this is something unusual, worth your time and money. Gore Verbinski master of his craft, and even with the cartoons he hasnot worked, but it has not affected the quality of the "Rango".Hollywood entrusted him with the "Pirates"and now - 135 million for thecartoon! Screenwriters worked perfectly. John Logan has worked withcartoons, and his track record there are some seriously paintings suchas "Gladiator" and "The Aviator." It is unknown who is James Ward,Tags, but once he is in the list screenwriters, it means that he puthis hand to writing the script. The plot is interesting for itsunusual, at first it might seem that "Rango" - the second "WALL-E", butit is already in couple of minutes. Yes, and cartoons in the genre of"western" almost there. I can only select "Spirit". The musical accompaniment also a very good level. But what can I say...Hans Zimmer was a composer of movie "Inception"! It says a lot. Stillwant to thank the artists. Perfectly traced parts of the desert, animals, nice to look at all this, the eye rejoices. The artists of"The Nutcracker" need a lot of learning from the artists "Rango." After all this, wants to discuss the budget. He is great, but in thiscartoon involving several great men, who had to pay big money. Thebudget must be recouped. Gorgeous animation, great story - it is only a few factors for whichyou must see "Rango." Animation is not just for children, but will beinteresting to adults and grandparents. In general, do not be lazy togo to the movies for positive emotions. |

For a movie about finding one's identity, Rango spends an awful lot of time searching for one of its own. |

Amazing Animation, but quite a few jokes fall flatRango, starring Johnny Depp, who is probably my favorite actor, is sofar the best animated film I've seen so far this year. It's simple,Rango, a chamelion actor tries to cover up the fact that he is a cowardby acting tuff in front of the local town of dirt. But he must learnwhy the water has dried up, and also must avoid the evil RattlesnakeJake, who will come since the only bird keeping him away has beenkilled.First off, the film's animation is absolutely amazing, I mean, thismatches, it may even outdo Pixar's animation. ILM did this, and man, they really know how to use computers. And I also found myself laughingquite a bit during the film, including a couple of cameos from a movieI haven't seen, but get the joke. However some of the jokes fall flat, they do end up having to use afart joke, also, it was a little predictable, but only a little bit.Overall, Rango was a great film, but I have to ask one question, thisis a kid's movie right? |

Rango DVDThis review is from: Rango (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy) (Blu-ray) I bought this video for my Grand Children and I of coursee watched it too. I found the movie was very good, however it should be be viewed by children at least five years old. There is a lot of scenes not suitable for younger chlldren. Rio is a better choice for children under five years old. |

Short note/ WarningI would advise reviewing this movie VERY carefully before watching itwith a child. Regardless of its looks, is as nasty as any otherwestern, and for a child the animal animations could cause very baddreams (or other unwanted reactions). Lots of gun fights, chases, andsome other scenes i cannot mention without spoiler alert. Also add thatmost animals are reptiles and amphibians, so they have disturbinglooks, especially since they are made to look worse than in real life. Good movie for adult/ teenage crowd though, i think parents would enjoywatching it alone and then decide if they want their children to seeit. It is a win/win situation that way. Personally i feel animationmovies should not be that dark in mood. |

Rango is toooo slowI could not give this movie anything higher than 3 stars because its way way to slow moving and about 40 minutes to long. Its a real shame to because the actors did a great job and the animation is terrific. But the writers got wrapped up in themselves and dragged the story out with no action to keep the movie viewers attention. The sequence of getting Dango to the town should not have taken more then 2-3 minutes, but it seemed more like 20 minutes.Save your money and do not buy this movie until you have rented it first to see if you really want it in your collection. I only bought it because of Johnny Depp and Amazon had a great sale for only $10 bucks. That is basically twice the rental fee through Amazon so I took the chance and bought it. Sorry I did. It will be going to a discount movie/book store that buys back DVDs. |

"Hell" is the word of choice in this movieCrude several times and the word "hell" was used about five times in the first hour. Not for younger kids because of violence and threats of violence. A bird is crushed to death. An armadillo is run over by a car and his middle is crushed flat, but he still survives somehow. Many of the characters are dark, gritty, gross and plain ugly. One character uses chewing tobacco and spits. Others smoke. There are mocking references to Christianity that only adults would get.All in all, not a movie I would want to own. My kids are 10 and 12 and were entertained by it, but I am glad I didn't buy it. It could have been so much better. It's not a family movie, in my opinion, and falls flat. |

Just extraordinary!Rango has pleased me in such a way that I am unsure any other movieever has and I was just raving to myself about it from the beginning,so I just HAD to share! This movie was a beautifully inclusive ofthings I didn't even know I appreciated in a movie because I had simplynever seen such care put into its production. I am so relieved thatthere are still people who are dedicated to making the best movie theypossibly can and I dare to hope that Rango sets the bar for the moviesto follow in 2011. Right away I noticed the immense detail in theanimation and the focus on simple, graceful images, qualities that didnot disappear as the movie progressed. The plot and the protagonist'sjourney are both traditional and yet unique and fresh, thanks to thenot-so-cliché detailed additions and unexpected perspective. Theimagery is simply phenomenal and so gracefully blunt. I would notreally consider this a children's movie because there isn't any dancingaround the frightening or violent, it is all very inclusive. Anotherthing that surprised me was the overall wordiness and the style ofhumor. Some of the jokes I didn't get immediately, so I definitelyliked the intellectual humor there. Once again, I don't really thinkthat children are a fitting audience for such humor and there weredefinitely bewildered children in the theatre wondering why all theadults were laughing. I like that the story seems very folk-y whenviewed out-of-context, but is brought into perspective very well. Thecharacters were all very individual and dimensional. One thing that wasrefreshing was the variety in settings and genre. We go from Rango'slittle 'theatre' and his artsy dramatics to a Tex-Mex kind ofenvironment where we are occasionally and subtly reminded that this isa role of Rango's and that we are in the modern era. I thought thatRango's graceful success and general boldness upon first arriving inDirt were off-beat and quite pleasingly surprising. The music also fitvery well with the film but wasn't simply background music, so I wassurprised again that the movie makers would bother so much. There werea lot of subtle techniques used, and maybe it's just my own artisticeye, but these (things like Rattlesnake Jake nearly never being shownfully in frame, which makes him seem very large and thus quitefrightening) show me that this was a film crafted with the utmost care.I can't find anything bad to say about this film, which proves to methat the people responsible for this went above and beyond, trying tomake each aspect of the film a masterpiece in itself for an overallvery consistently lovely movie. I would definitely recommend thateveryone see it. |

This a d@mn straight, well made animation since Toy StoryI've never seen such a wonderful film since the original ToyStory(1995) this is a definite work of art put in with a lot of heart.OK so it starts off really good, that little geek Depp gets flown outof his lizard tank and ends up walking around in a desert filled withplaces and other critters he's not really interested in.Fresh into this new world he's in he finds himself a hero in this funnydirty town actually called "Dirt" that is in need of a new Sheiriff, hedoes a good job so far(making big laughs and genuine heart warmth ofgreat joyful fun) From Start to finish with laughs, freak outs and breakouts this is abeautifully made movie, everything is great a new generation ofanimation made perfectly for everyone to enjoy. Its the heart of "Toy Story" meeting the comedy of"Despicable Me"Its a wonderful film for the ages! |

Not suitable for kids under 7 in my honest opinion!I went to see this movie under extreme protest and it was OK - I didn'tlike the type of animation used, nor the western theme, but it had anOK story and even though it was pretty formulaic I can certainly see itappealing to a certain type of audience.I have to say a lot of the themes, language and jokes were simply notkid friendly at all - I had little kids with me as it was only PG ratedand they were really, really bored by about 45 minutes in. Two of themactually left with their parent and I saw a lot of other parents withsmall (toddler - Kindergarten age) kids exiting about an hour in.So, this movie won the box office for sure this week, but I think a lotof parents who waited will not want to go next week when they talk totheir friends who will say it is definitely an older kids movie - I'dsay honestly 8-10 and upwards.I think this was a solid entry into animation for the director who maybe carving his niche by the way his movies are animated - it's notpretty animation, it's not at all cutesie - personally I found it veryunappealing visually. But, Tim Burton makes movies that are equallyunappealing to me that are loved by his solid core of fans - I thinkthis would appeal to Tim Burton fans a lot.All in all, not an enjoyable movie experience for me - I felt like theplot was a little thin and by the end of the 90 or so minutes I was SOglad it was over.I can't wait for Cars 2 to come out in May - now that movie will appealto me visually - I'm a Pixar groupie, no wonder this one wasn't mystyle really.Read some of the other reviews on here, but heed my warning - don'ttake your under 8's - their whining when they are bored gets verytedious! |

Cute animated wild-west tale with little creatures of the desert.Absolutely the best things about this movie are the superb animation, and the superb voice acting by the main actors. The story itself isjust OK, it is a parody of sorts of old time western movies.Johnny Depp is really amazingly good as the voice of Rango. He isn'tRango from the very beginning, in fact I suppose he has no name. But inthe dusty town of DIRT, when pressed by the locals for a name, he sees'Durango' on the side of a container and takes the last 5 letters ashis own, 'Rango'. The very beginning of the story looks out of place, we have this veryimaginative, theatrical chameleon interacting with small plastic playfigures. Soon we realize he is in a terrarium, and then quickly hefinds himself outside, on the road, in the scorching desert, a placethis chameleon never wanted to be. But he meets an armadillo that hasjust been run over, and he 'follows his shadow' in the search forwater.Rango's acting talents pay off when he gets to the town of 'Dirt', indesperate need of a new sheriff, he convinces everyone he is adangerous lizard and a hero. Pretty Isla Fisher voices Beans, a different type of desert lizard. Ilike to try to identify voices and I really thought it was ReeseWitherspoon, and Fisher is really good in her characterization. Similarly, Ned Beatty voices the Mayor, an old turtle, and I reallythought it was Harve Presnell, who was the wealthy father-in-law inFargo. Towards the end of the movie, Rango encounters a human figure, that wasremarkable in its facial details, and my wife and I immediately said'Clint Eastwood'. But it was Timothy Olyphant as the voice of theSpirit of the West. So my guessing wasn't very good for this movie, andthe vocal acting was uniformly superb.Anyway, this is a cute and entertaining animated movie, the theme beingthat whoever controls the water, in the desert, controls everything.Rango has to figure this out, and along with a band of Dirt residentsfind the way to get water back to Dirt. |

Love it... but not for kidsThis review is from: Rango (DVD) I bought this after waiting a very long time to have it come out on DVD. I had seen the trailers and laughed out loud at them. I'd watched them all several times as a matter of fact. I was ready to laugh, but I was overjoyed to discover a great western film based on all those cowboy stories I loved as a kid. This isn't for children. It is animation for adults. The plot is simple and action might be okay for older kids, but small children will be bored because the inside joke type humor will be over their heads. With more twists and turns than a mountain road, this tale is funny, shocking and has a message. It also has a collection of very interesting desert critters that will have you coming back again and again. One of the special features is very entertaining as it shows the actual animals that ispired this strange cast of charcters and accents. In watching the how-it-was-done trailers, the actors were twice as fun as they got to play out the action and ad lib as they acted their lines instead of merely reading them. One to watch when you want to laugh out loud and be reminded of artistic genius. |

Excellent filmI'm not sure what all the negative fuss is about. What is a "kids" movie, anyway? Recognizing that appreciation of humor differs, I laughed a lot at this movie, as did my 22 year old daughter. My in-laws, who are in their eighties, perhaps not so much. I found the dialogue clever and witty, the photography stunning, and the voice acting terrific. This film is rated PG, which I would say warns parents of young children to check it out before they expose their children to it. My opinion is that it is perfectly appropriate for age 10 and above (Netflix Common Sense rating says ok for 9+).Remembering back to films with adult themes I thought exciting and entertaining as a kid, I think of Ben-Hur, Guns of Navarone, Jason and the Argonauts, Hondo and Rio Bravo. I'm talking about such themes as self sacrifice, bravery in the face of danger, self doubt, and good versus evil. This film has all of those themes and presents them in an exciting, funny and entertaining manner. No, I would not take a five year old to see this. I took my daughter to see The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast when she was likely a little young for them. She was scared a few times, but entertained. Consider the Star Wars films, or the Toy Story trilogy, which also present many of the same themes, and which are considered good "family")as opposed to "children's) films. Consider the brilliantly animated films of Hayao Miyazaki, most of which are also rated PG, but universally praised as great family films.I urge anyone who really likes movies, especially Westerns, to see this film. If you're wondering if this is appropriate for your children or grandchildren, check it out first. My opinion is that if you disregard the rating system, and simply assume that a film is appropriate just because it's animated, then any bad surprise is on your own head. You want a good movie for young children, check out Winnie the Pooh. |
