A brilliant and hugely enjoyable filmI was not very interested in watching Rise of the Planet of the Apes, but when I started reading very enthusiastic reviews about it, mycuriosity woke up. Now, after having seen it, I can say that the filmis totally worthy of that acclamation, because it is an excellent moviewhich works perfectly well as a prequel of the original saga, as wellas a modern "reboot" of the franchise.Rise of the Planet of the Apes is one of those weird blockbusters whichtell a really solid and consistent story. The screenplay shows alogical progression of events and an organic increment of the drama, instead of just being a parade of action scenes joined with each otherby artificial melodrama, like we have seen in many blockbusters. And ifwe add to that an interesting message about animal rights, the finalresult is an exciting and hugely entertaining movie which also leave usthinking. Having said that, there are a few details about the sapiencefrom the apes in the screenplay which feel a bit forced. There were afew scenes in which I felt the same as when I saw the velociraptoropening the kitchen's door in Jurassic Park. I know that the objectiveis surprising us with the unexpected intelligence from creatures whoare usually considered as "irrational"; but there are some things whichdo not precisely depend from the intelligence, but from the previousexperience. However, the rest of the screenplay is built with such acare and attention to every detail that those little traps ended up notbeing very important. The apes created by the studio Weta Digital work magnificently. Tostart with, the textures, "shaders" and hair simulation are genuinelyextraordinary, and their realism is as good or even better to the onefrom films like Avatar or Legend of the Guardians: The Owls ofGa'Hoole. As for the facial animations and range of emotions from theapes, they are equally impressive. As for the human element from the movie, James Franco is credible asthe scientist whose optimism and good intentions are combined with afatal result. The great John Lithgow makes a brilliant work as thescientist's father suffering from Alzheimer; it is very difficult tointerpret someone with mental limitations without making it look likean offensive joke, but Lithgow perfectly achieved that without anyapparent effort. And Freida Pinto is adequate as the main character'sromantic interest. So, in conclusion, I very enthusiastically recommendRise of the Planet of the Apes as a fascinating experience. Oh, and bythe way, don't loose the final credits, when there is a scene whichsimultaneously works as an interesting epilogue and disquietingprologue. |

Over-hypedThis movie was good but not great. What really bothers me is that atthe moment it is rated higher than Jurrasic Park, which is absolutelyridiculous.Bad news: The presentation of the human characters is pretty shallowand cliché. You have the heartless corporation head, the caringsensitive girlfriend, the young asshole punk who you know will get whatis coming to him. Even James Francos performance was lacklustrecompared to the effort he put in to 128 days. However the clichés donot stop at the characters as the film rips story line from Deep BlueSea, Jurrasic Park, Resident Evil among others. Finally I feel theproducers areat fault with the trailers made for the movie. The entiremovie issummed up during 30 second TV commercials. There is not much ofa novel experience in the theatre.Good news: The CGI technology carries this film. It is incredible howfar special effects have come. The apes really steal the show with arunner up prize going to the director for the ape scenes.6 out of 10 for amazing technology and cool computerized actionsequences |

Surprisingly Good!!!This review is from: Rise Of The Planet of the Apes (Amazon Instant Video) Desperate to watch something new , I ordered this movie , ignoring the fact that I thought the trailer was horrible and in it the apes looked quite CG and really fake. But to my surprise it was really good! The plot was plausible , and for the most part the apes looked authentic enough that I stopped looking for the the CG of it all. I enjoyed it very much! |

No 'damn dirty apes' here. Before I begin, there is something I need to get off my chest. Rise…ofthe Planet…of the Apes? I can understand the producers' desire to linkthis film with the rest of the series, but I'm sure audiences would'vemade the same connection if it was just called Rise of the Apes. Butfear not, because an overly clunky, lame title is by far the worstaspect of this movie. It falls short of replicating the thematic geniusof the original, yet wipes the floor with Tim Burton's ridiculousremake. Will Rodman (James Franco) is a medical scientist tasked with creatinga cure for Alzheimer's disease, a formula that to date has only beentested on apes. Its success is determined by measuring a primate'sincreased intelligence, but after one subject flips out and is killed,Will takes in her baby and raises the chimp as a son. Noticing that hismother has passed the effects of the drug genetically to young Caesar,Will is shocked to see just how extensive the side effects are, resulting in Caesar developing a mind far beyond any ape, as well astypically human traits such as empathy and compassion, leading to abond between the chimp and Will's Alzheimer's-afflicted father Charles(John Lithgow).Although personally considered one of the best up-and-coming actors inthe business, Franco doesn't have to extend his acting chops here, nordoes on- screen girlfriend Frieda Pinto. The criminally underusedLithgow does well in a small role, but it is Andy Serkis, as the manbehind the computer-generated Caesar, who steals the show. I supposethis was to be expected (he did Gollum, after all) but I was constantlyamazed at how brilliantly a human could not only mimic the movement ofan animal, but also invoke real audience empathy for what is just ananimated image. The short runtime of the film (approximately 105 minutes) isaccommodated by excellent pacing. Certainly, Rise of the Apes is awareof its status as a blockbuster, so almost by definition the movie mustmove quickly, but this is juxtaposed by the slow, progressivedevelopment of Caesar, inserting realism into an area I was expectingwould just be glossed over by director Rupert Wyatt. Caesar starts outlearning basic life skills, but as he ages, his genetic mutationteaches him complex talents such as intimidation, manipulation, violence and dominance. By the end of the film, he has become theleader of a downtrodden civilisation, spreading his anti-humanpropaganda for the sake of fulfilling an ambitious plan. Here we have a film in which the ending is inherently obvious evenbefore the opening credits roll. The joy comes from exactly how itarrives to that conclusion. I was expecting a big, dumb,battle-for-survival movie going in, but Apes remains grounded in thesheer art of storytelling for the most part, saving the final battlefor a very enjoyable climactic set piece. As one friend stated, youalmost become a fan of the apes by the third act, if only to see justhow they go about their hostile takeover. In fact, even the final scenedoes not try to be too excessive, striking a perfect balance betweensuspension of disbelief and a grounding in reality. To those who may not buy into the premise entirely, I assure you thatthe vast majority of the plot is explained logically, and any suddenescalation of the story is accounted for with reason for a character'sactions or development. As mentioned earlier, Caesar does notimmediately become a walking, talking, weapon-wielding ape but insteadgrows slowly. This is beneficial in justifying the extremities andcomplexities in his character that have become apparent by film's end. The movie works in certain scenes that hint to the original, both interms of imagery and the shift in power from apes to humans, which is anice touch. It does not quite match the thought-provoking nature of the1968 sci-fi masterclass, but adds a cautionary, self-conscious elementto the blockbuster, certainly welcomed by this movie fan, resulting ina final product I would not hesitate in recommending.*There's nothing I love more than a bit of feedback, good or bad. Sodrop me a line on jnatsis@iprimus.com.au and let me know what youthought of my review.* |

The action scenes were very well done, but the rest of the movie was far less engagingThe Verdict "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" is an OK Sci-Fi action movie. A trulygreat Sci-Fi action movie walks a fine line between an exciting pureaction and a smart thought-provoking Sci-Fi content. Unfortunately,"Rise of the Planet of the Apes" has failed to walk that fine line: theaction scenes were very well done, but the rest of the movie was farless engaging. The Positives "Rise of the Planet of the Apes", unlike "Planet of the Apes", clearlyand unequivocally depicts the re-born apes as intellectually andpossibly even morally superior than the humans. I thought that itdefinitely added more depth and freshness to the plot and was asignificant redeeming factor for the movie. The result of the collaboration between Andy Serkis and the visualeffect wizards was outstanding: the apes in the movie had surpassedmost of the humans not only in intellect, but also in acting as well. All the mass scenes with the apes were done very thoroughly and becamea highlight of the movie. John Lithgow, Brian Cox, and Tom Felton were convincing in theirsupporting roles. The Negatives I like modern cars. They are safer, more reliable, roomier and at thesame time more fuel efficient than the older models. However, there isone thing that I do not like about them: too much cheap plastic used intheir interior. When I think about "Rise of the Planet of the Apes"movie, I have a very similar feeling - too much cheap plastic. Let me explain. John Lithgow, one of my favorite actors, is veryconvincing as an Alzheimer victim. However, I just cannot make myselffeel any compassion to his character or any genuine interest in hissuffering, because this whole story line is a piece of cheap plastic tofill the hole in the plot, and the whole subplot goes nowhere. In the original "Planet of the Apes" female chimp Dr. Zira played acrucially important role in the story and only her compassion, intellect, intuition, and courage helped the main human character tosurvive. In contrast, "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" definitely lacksa strong woman presence. The main woman character, played by the lovelyand promising actress Freida Pinto, could be safely removed from themovie without any significant impact on the plot. Her character looksmore like a cheap plastic accessory for the lead actor - James Franco, whose one-dimensional performance was mostly uninspiring andunimpressive. In the original "Planet of the Apes", the main conflict is representedby a cosmic clash between the two civilizations - the apes and thehumans - their values, their priorities, their ways of seeing things. This conflict was a tool to allow us to take a long and hard look atour human civilization with all its greatest achievements and all itshorrible flaws. In the "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" the conflicthas been reduced to bullying, bad conditions in the animal shelters, bureaucracy in the court system, and finally - to dealing with crazyneighbors. It is all very nice, interesting, and true to life, but thatis not what I would expect from a good Sci-Fi action movie. If I am so interested in dealing with crazy neighbors or bureaucracy, Ican get it free of charge – one look around would be enough.knowyourmovie.blogspot.com |

Very Realistic - Held My Interest ThroughoutThis review is from: Rise Of The Planet of the Apes (Amazon Instant Video) Rise Of The Planet of the Apes has the most realistic special effects of any other movie I've seen. James Franco portrays Ceasar's owner, who is responsible for the ape's extreme intelligence. Andy Serkis plays Ceasar by the process of advanced motion capture and does an amazing job. You can almost believe the apes are real. The title is misleading, in that it seems to indicate this movie is a continuation of Planet of the Apes but is in no way related. I enjoyed the movie and thought the acting was very good. Andy Serkis should receive an award for performing the motion capture in this movie. |

Creative addition to the "Planet of the Apes" franchise'Rise of the Planet of the Apes' is a very creative andthought-provoking addition to the "Apes" franchise.James Franco's performance as Dr. Will Rodman is very convincing.Rodman takes home an infant chimpanzee who otherwise would have been"put down", and thereby saves the chimp's life. The chimpanzee, namedCaesar, obtains unusual intelligence from experimental treatment forAlzheimer's disease, and soon becomes the leader in an ape revolt.Veteran actor John Lithgow once again proves his acting skills asCharles, Will's father who is suffering from Alzheimer's's disease.Freida Pinto portrays Will's attractive companion, Caroline. The special effects in "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" are veryimpressive. This isn't Charleton Heston's 1968 "Planet of the Apes",with actors portraying simians via heavy prosthetic makeup. The apes inthis 2011 saga are computer generated and are very realistic inappearance. More importantly, however, are the emotions the apes feelthroughout the film. Their anger boils to the surface due to the illtreatment inflicted by their handlers. There are several direct references made to the 1968 original film,"Planet of the Apes". First, Caesar's mother is called "Bright Eyes",which was the name Heston's character was called before the apeslearned his actual name was Taylor. Second, in the 2011 film, a handlerrepeats Charleton Heston's infamous lines, "It's a madhouse!" and "Getyour stinking paws off me, you damned dirty ape!". Third, Caesar isruthlessly hosed down while in his cage, in a scene reminiscent ofTaylor's experience in the 1968 film. Furthermore, "Caesar" was thename of the offspring of Cornelius and Zira, two chimpanzee scientistsin the 1968 film.In my view, there are two main themes of "Rise of the Planet of theApes". First, all creatures want to be treated with dignity andrespect. Second, the unintended consequences of medical technology canbe severe. I highly recommend this creative science fiction film. |

Awful filmI cannot begin to tell you how disappointed I was with this movie.Nothing happens! I spent the entire time thinking, i hope somethinghappens soon. Then, when it finally did, I thought "don't let that beit, this is going to be the end isn't it". And it was! There will be people out there who will argue there is a great storyand it develops well, and they aren't completely wrong, but almost! It was so boring. And the name is misleading too. It should be called Rise of the Rise ofthe Planet of the Apes.I left the cinema feeling like I'd just spent 105 minutes watching theintro to a film. |

As Good or Maybe Even Better Than The OriginalPlanet of the Apes by Pierre Boulle is one of the best science fiction books I've read. The original film was also very good and it followed the story pretty closely. Another selling point was that women liked to see Charlton Heston's bare chest. To make a successful prequel movie about the events that caused the rise of the apes is even more impressive, and no humans (male of female) had to take their shirts off. Caesar (Andy Serkis) is the first simian to speak English fluently. He even speaks it better than his captors who like to taunt him. He gets bored sitting around in a cage all day, so he teaches his fellow apes to revolt in the hopes of achieving freedom, thus becoming their leader without an apparent election. Evolution is not the culprit in this film, instead it is caused by an experimental drug without any involvement from PETA, KFC, or Pamela Anderson.According to some sources, Serkis required some minor plastic surgery to alter his appearance for this film. The procedure was not as intensive due to his previous role in King Kong where he also played an ape, although he was much larger. The transition from Gollum to King Kong was much more problematic according to one of Michael Jackson's former plastic surgeons.Believe it or not, it's people like us who make the apes kill on the Golden Gate bridge. This whole mess could have been prevented if people had treated their pets better and had not put leashes around their necks. What is really amazing is that these poorly equipped apes are too organized for the human authorities to handle. |

This was really well made, I loved it! (A MUST SEE!)I was thinking it will be a fun action pack movie from start to end.well i got that wrong. (But that not a bad think at all)I found this movie really depressing and emotional, I am not a shame tosay I almost cried at this movie, my eyes were getting watery. (Numberof girls left early as they crying a lot)I really like the whole slow build to the story was really good, Icared for these monkey/Apes ( these seem nicer then the looters we hadin England that week)The Actions scene you seen in the trailer is mostly in the last halfhour of movie. which wetter a lot fun to watch and i was cheering forthe apes!I think the end fitted in really wellGreat movie 9 out of 10 |

Not a classic, but still a great movieI think one of the reasons why the original Planet of the Apes in 1968was so good was because back then, special effects were so non-existentthat films had to rely more on plot, deep character development, andthe skill of great actors like Charlton Heston. With that said, I likedthe Rise of the Planet of the Apes, because (while it's no classic likethe original film) it manages to capture some of the old school formulathat made the original so great.I'll admit that this film is rather too slow for my tastes, but it'sslow because it needs to be. Trust me, there's nothing more powerfuland moving than when you first hear a chimpanzee talk, screaming"NOOOOOOOO" to the top of his lungs at a surprised handler at an apefacility. It comes late in the movie, but man, it's worth the longbuild up. You see, while James Franco gets top billing for this film,no human is the main character as in the original Planet of the Apes orits remake in 2001 starring Mark Wahlberg. The star here is Caesar(Andy Serkis), a baby chimp taken in by a young scientist by the nameof Will Rodman (Franco) doing research for a cure of Alzheimer'sdisease. Caesar's mother is killed after an experiment goes haywire, where she's injected with a substance that increases intelligence. Youmight have guested it, the substance is pasted along to Caesar and hesoon develops more and more human-like characteristics. It also helpsthat Caesar is raised in Will's home, which he shares with his parents. As with the original movie, there is plenty of character developmenthere and we actually care about Caesar and his fate, not to mention wedevelop a soft spot for the bound that the chimp shares with Will'sfather (John Lithgow), who if you haven't also guessed it, is sufferingfrom Alzheimer's.The only downsides to this movie are that the various primates in themovie look decidedly digital. I prefer the actual primate costumes thatwere used in the previous Planet of the Apes movies. The ending wasrather abrupt, and only seemed to serve as nothing more than the set upfor a sequel. Also, Franco's role towards the end was pretty muchmeaningless. They could have just as easily written him off the last 20minutes and been just fine. What a waste of a talented actor. |

Great movie.. unfortunately with a big problemThis is really good movie worth seeing in theaters with unfortunatelyone big problem - and yes, this is a real problem: Dear Producers, "Rodney McKay" can not be downgraded to an as.holeneighbor. He is the smartest man in two universes. Seriously. That wasa real bad casting choice. It distracts a hardcore SG-Atlantis fan. Andalso he's the reason for global civilization collapse? C'moon!P.S: This review is a confirmation of bad luck of David Hewlett - akind of Leonard Nimoy curse. Hewlett can't and must not play anycharacter except McKAy. No, not because he's a bad actor, on thecontrary it's because he made Rodney McKay alive! |

Rise Of The Planet Of The ApesRise Of The Planet of Apes was very surprising. I left the movietheater very pleased and shocked. Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes isabout a group of scientists including Will Rodman (James Franco) tryingto find the cure for Alzheimer's. While testing their final product, itsupposedly goes wrong when Bright Eyes, their main testing chimp, attacks the company, and they shut down the project for the cure. Whileputting all the chimps down, they find out that the chimp had a babyand Will takes it home and names it Ceasar. From there, Will finds out that Ceasar carried on the traits of it'smother, which was the cure, and figure out that the cure works, but hasa terrible back fire to it that makes it dangerous and lethal. Some of the pros of this movie is that it's more about Ceasar, and notJames Franco and the other scientists. The special effects to thismovie were great, too. Will's dad (John Lithgow) also has Alzheimer's inthe movie, and I could relate to the movie because my great grandmotherhas Alzheimer's, too. They made you believe that John Lithgow hadAlzheimer's with the beating nurses up and the lack of memory. Also thebest scene in this movie was when Ceasar goes 'ape' crap on Dodge (TomFelton). There's not a lot of cons in this movie, and the ones in the movie arevery minor. For example, I thought it was useless to have Will's loveinterest, Caroline (Freida Pinto), in the movie. I thought the scenesin which she was in, were forced. I think they put her in their just tobe a pretty face to look at, even know she wasn't in their quite longenough to be looked at. But I will give it props that it didn't focuson their relationship as much as Ceasar. Because in my opinion it wasway more fun watching Ceasar kick butt. The only other thing I didn'tlike was that in the beginning, I thought it was too fast paced. Forexample, in one scene, it would show Ceasar at age one, then in thenext scene, it would say "3 years later"' and then in the next scene itwould say "5 years later", but it wasn't too bad.Overall, I would give this movie a 9 out of a 10. So if you like actionmovies about kick butt animals (particularly monkeys) then you willdefinitely love Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes. |

AverageThis was an okay movie, not that I would have watched with the benefitof hindsight. It contained some elements that I liked, namely it wasquite fast paced and peppered with some juicy justice, remarkablylacking in violence, from the part of apes that is. For years theanthropologists have wondered, why the evolution favored the less agileand slow way of walking on two legs, instead of four. I guess theevolution made a mistake. We can all see it firsthand in this movie, when the apes move around speedily with ease, overpowering thefirepower of the police force, who inflict remarkably little damage onthe apes - even with a chopper. It's also a cautionary tale of how far the science can get you. Ishould call it the 'scientific-industrial establishment', whosecarelessness and disregard (in the film) for procedure caused the aperace to become supreme. The film itself doesn't emphasize the badquality of relations between humans and apes.Anyhow, it doesn't matter how unbelievable all of it sounds. Whenwatching the movie, the evolution of the story sounded pretty good. Iteven has its cast of evil characters. If they'd only been less evil, all of us would be saved from our destiny in the hands of the apes. |

Great film great productThis film was a great addition to the Apes mythology. I watched the special features and I applaud everyone from the actors to the computer animators. Everyone put a lot of heart and soul into the film and it really paid off. They created new techniques in CGI and motion capture and really took things to the next level. Can't wait to see a sequel or two. |

Rise of the planet of the apes 2011: Movie ReviewTitle: Rise of the planet of the apes Release Date: 11th August 2011Certificate: 12APlot: Will Rodman (James Franco) is working in a medical researchfacility, trying to find a cure for Alzheimer's motivated by his dadCharles Rodman (John Litgow) who has contracted the disease. He rushesthe testing proses and pushes trough a working prototype, but while theboard is given a presentation the ape called sparkle eyes escapes andgoes on a rampage and the whole project is shelved and all remainingchimps are destroyed apart form sparkle eyes baby. Will takes home thebaby chimp and realizes the chimp inhereted the cure but because hehand no brain defects it enhanced his higher brain functions. With thisnew information he gives the cure to his farther who improves almostinstantaneously. When Caesar is hurt Will takes him to a zoo vet calledCaroline Aranha (Freida Pinto) and Caesar uses sign language to hook upthe two unsuspecting lovers. I will leave it there as not to spoil thefilm for you.Review: This was a film I wasn't planning on watching due to the fact Iam a fan of the originals, from what I seen of the adverts they hadchanged the story line and that's my one pet peeve, directors/writerscan put there own spin on the storyline but they must keep to the basicstoryline of the original. They did surprise me though even though theychanged how Caesar came to be the film was excellent the story line wasflawless, it even brought a tear to my eyes a few times. The CGIaffects was done to perfection you could believe the apes was therewith the real cast, they moved fluently even down to the hairs onCaesar when he was sprayed with the water cannon. I was sitting on theedge of my seat when they was crossing the bridge feeling worried forthe apes, that's when I know a film has done its job it made me feelfor the characters in the film.Andy Serkis as always played his character with everything he had, Ididn't think he could play a role as good as he played Golum but heproved me wrong.James Franco and Frida Pinto played of each other well you could feelthere love for Caesar and each other, i wanted the cure to work on hisfather just as much as he did. |

computerized graphics cannot put soul into these apesAmazing how many times can Hollywood try to squeeze the idea thattriggered in 1968 the 'Planet of the Apes' series. The original filmstarred Charlton Heston and led to four sequels in the few years afterits original release. A remake by Tim Burton with Mark Wahlberg in thelead role was made one decade ago. And now we have 'Rise of the Planetof the Apes' which in my humble opinion is technically sophisticatedbut lacks much of the quality and ideas on which the original filmswere based. The evil human origins of the world dominated by apes were the nuclearapocalypse in the original film. The new evil role is nowadays taken bygenetics research and medical corporations. Experiments on apes for adrug that can heal the Alzheimer disease go wrong and one smart apetriggers a revolution. The family-adopts-ape plot is extremelysimplistic and not much complex then in scores of films and TV shows wehave seen in the last few decades. Even so the film which is directedby Rupert Wyatt feels much longer than its 105 minutes.'Rise of the Planet of the Apes' is certainly technically amazing. Theimaging technique used already in such films as the 'Lord of the Rings'series or in 'Avatar' allows human actors to dress into fantasticshapes while keeping expressiveness and emotions. Here this techniqueis brilliantly used to create the main chimpanzee character (Caesar)and the crowd of apes, each gaining individual traits. Unfortunatelythe more sophisticated the technique and the virtual characters theless expressive are the human ones. There is not too much talent to bewasted in the characters of the scientist played by James Franco or hisgirlfriend played by Freida Pinto, and the best human performance isgiven by John Lithgow as the Alzheimer disease-stricken father. It is said that 'Rise of the Planet of Apes' is the smarterentertaining film of the summer. I can only imagine how bad must be theother. You can certainly lie back in the chair, and enjoy the popcornand the apes. Not much more. The scariest thing is that the signs arethat this film is the first in a new series. |
