Wait for the DVD, it'll be even better!

I hear that Wright is going to digitally replace Cera with Jar Jarbinks in every scene. Early preview have shown a 90% reduction inunfocused feelings of rage and disgust among males in the 15-54 agebrackets, and a 15% increase in arousal among females 18-34.If you can though, hold out for the BluRay, which will feature a scenewhere Cera is fed feet first into a wood chipper, slowly. Reportedly, his expression doesn't alter at all during the whole scene, and allthat comes out is... wood chips. So, no, not a fan. Wright does all his usual jump-cut trickery, andfinally with a budget to match his vision. Normally that would give afilm a score close to fifty out of ten. Unfortunately, compressing thealready trite source material down to under 2 hours minutes knocks offa couple of points, and then Michael Cera is a solid 300 point ding.Scott - and there's a slacker hipster emo douche name right off the bat- is a slacker hipster emo douche, let's be clear on that. Notecarefully that the Pilgrim fans denying that are all slackers, hipsters, emos and/or douches. So there's your market, right there. Since he's that particular sort of 22 year old just-getting-creepyslacker hipster emo douche who nails hot high school girls, that takeshigh school slacker hipster emo douches out of the picture. God damn 22year old slacker hipster emo douches, stealing our girls. And since slacker hipster emo douche over 22 can't nail high schoolgirls without getting 10 to 15 in Federal, that's another slice out ofthe potential market. So, this is a film for 22 year old slacker hipster emo douches. Thekind of 22 year old slacker hipster emo douche who play 25 year old 8bit games. In short, this is a film that will actually have to "find"its target audience by growing them in a vat. Should have spent some ofthe $120 million production and marketing budget on that, Universal. In all seriousness, there are only two things that you need to knowabout Scott Pilgrim: one, Michael Cera gets punched in the face. Buttwo, he doesn't get punched enough. The end. Of Cera's career, hopefully, but sadly maybe of Wright's too. It really is a bitter-sweetstory.

Don't waste your time or money like I just did.

I have never walked out of a movie until this one. I can't believe Ijust wasted $12.50 on this awful garbage. Anyone who found a point tothis movie needs some help! I can't believe we sat there for a wholehour before we left and had to stop each other from killing ourselveswith how boring stupid and pointless this movie was. Look out NapoleanDynamite you have competition for the worst movie ever made! I wouldrather watch a blank screen on my TV for several hours before watchingthis movie again. I would rather watch dancing with the stars. I wouldrather watch little house on the prairie. I would rather watch oldpeople sex and when I say old I mean really really old grandma andgrandpa old people sex before I would ever watch anything this horribleagain.

"Game On" Before "Love On"

It's sometimes career suicide when making a film based on alreadyproduced, cult-adored material because the material (TV show, comicbook, video game) has a rabid fanbase. I'm not familiar with thesix-volume, American manga series, "Scott Pilgrim" by Bryan LeeO'Malley, but its' cine-adaptation, "Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World" byBrit fanboy director Edgar Wright ("Shaun of The Dead", "Hot Fuzz" andthe TV series "Spaced") is enough to make me a convert because it hasthe pulse of a heroin-addicted jackrabbit. Keep up, people! No doubt Michael Cera ("Arrested Development", Superbad", "Juno") isgeek-familiar in the title role, a twentysomething, struggling indierocker in Toronto who either jams with his buds Stephen (Mark Webber),Kim (Allison Pill of "Milk") and Young Neil (Johnny Simmons of"Jennifer's Body), hangs with his sharkish gay roommate Wallace (slyKiernan Culkin of "Lymelife") or avoids the great buzz surrounding hisex-girl/rocker Envy Adams (Brie Larson of "The United States of Tara").Barely legal high schooler Knives Chau (lively Ellen Wong) capturesScott's heart, but the relationship's deader than a corpse. Enterbright-haired, American immigrant and Amazon delivery girl onrollerblades Ramona Flowers (cute, deadpan Mary Elizabeth Winstead of"Live Free Or Die Hard") in the pictures, and it's "Knives Who?" inScott's head. Ramona returns his "love jones" but her seven ex-lovers(two are twins and one's a girl!) show up, mean and super-powered,forcing our hero into wild anime/video game duels, complicating hisalready shaky love life.If you understand the visual languages of anime, American and Japanesecomic book, video games and indie rock, which are jam-packed in thescript by Wright and Michael Bacall (co-wrote/starred in "Manic"), goodfor you because the average moviegoer would get a brain aneurysm. Theco-writers know all the fringe pop culture storytelling tricks and hugsthem: speed lines during battles; side commentary; captions introducingcharacters and locales, illustrating audio effects (a la the 1960s"Batman" TV series) and noting life points; limbo-like dreams;characters changing hairstyles and costumes; facial wild takes andenemies turning into coins after defeat. It's an assault on the eyesand ears, but film begs and deserves multiple viewings, especially onDVD.Nobody has a gray hair, sagging chin or an AARP membership card in thecast, but they have old souls, especially the two leads. Cera may be atypecast victim, but his role has a backbone, attracting Winstead'sdour but colorful heart. The aforementioned supporting players are damngood gonzo; no cast of a TV teen drama could defeat them! Even the"sane" ones, popinjay-like, steel-eyed clerk Julie Powers (Aubrey Plazaof "Parks and Recreation") and Scott's hard-fact older sib Stacey (AnnaKendrick of "Up In The Air") fit in the madness. Bill Hader (also of"Superbad") is interesting the unseen voice. You also can't forget The League of Evil-Exes, a bunch of self-lovingnut-jobs, Scott must handle one by one. Standouts include Chris Evans(who's been in a lot of comic book cine-adaptations since 2005) as acocky action movie star; Brandon Routh ("Superman Returns" and aunfairly controversial-by-fan guest run on the geek spy series "Chuck")as a strict vegan guitarist/ Envy's current beau; Mae Whitman as afeisty lesbian with a metal whip and Jason Schwartzman ("Rushmore","Bored To Death") as a slimy music industry power broker/the gang'sleader.Like "Sin City", "Watchmen (The Ulitmate Cut)" and "Kick-Ass", "ScottPilgrim Vs. The World" is another true-blue cine-adaptation of a comicbook/graphic novel that gives the finger to conformistic, maturityattitudes while being mature in the process. Not a lot of people will"get it"(thanks ADD!!!), but give it time. Until "Tron Legacy", thefilm's probably the most video game-centric around. If they see this,hard-core gamers will refrain from drowning their sorrows in Yoo-Hoo,after being exposed to drek like "Double Dragon" and the "StreetFighter" films (not the Sonny Chiba films, mind you).

Awful and boring

After seeing the very high rating (8.1 average) on IMDb, I decided totake a girly friend to watch a movie and surprise her with somethingunique and funny. I saw the trailer and knew the genre.Anyway, long story short, we left after we couldn't take theuselessness of this movie. Beside a scene or two, the movie is very, very far from being even remotely funny for anyone over 12 years ofage. It is noisy, with some occasional nice music with some consolegame fighting style thats honestly too deja-vu to be entertaining.I guess its a kids movie... but even those must have a story! take theLion King or any other decent family movie. it HAS an attaching story.Lacking a story, the movie gives u no reason at all to stay on ur seatother than cuz u already paid ur ticket. The cast had potential, or most of em, but who wants to watch to see ifhe gets the girl after fighting the 7 evil boyfriends??...trust me youwill be bored watching even the first two.I don't understand reviews in IMDb.... list average reviewers age?

Scott Pilgrim delivers!

After seeing an advance screening of the film tonight, Scott Pilgrim isdefinitely one of the funniest movies of 2010 and one of the mostexciting. Being a huge fan of the series, I was excited to see how itturned out and I was not disappointed. Michael Cera plays the role ofScott Pilgrim perfectly as does every actor in the film. The only flawis that anyone who is unfamiliar with video game and comic culture maynot enjoy the film as much as those who are familiar. But thatshouldn't deter everyone from at least checking out the series andgiving it a shot. When the film receives its theatrical release August13th, I will definitely see the movie again!

One of the best video game movies ever made... and it's based on a graphic novel!

For starters, I'll say that I have read the first few graphic novels inthe Scott Pilgrim series by Bryan Lee O'Malley and had seen a couple oftrailers, so I thought that I had some idea what to expect as I went toa pre-release screening in Omaha. Still, my expectations were blownaway. To bring such content to the big screen from a graphic novel isalways a challenge, and with the content being so video-game centric, perhaps even more so. However, Edgar Wright clearly overcame thechallenge with great casting, good pacing, and what I can only callappropriate special effects. From the appearance of the Universal logo and music at the beginningall the way to the end (well, the start of the credits, at least), Ifound the movie an incredibly fun experience, with many laughs at sightgags, one-liners, and the random geekery that the people who made thefilm obviously knew that their target audience would be looking for.Additionally, a good soundtrack surrounds much of the on-screen action.I know that there are people who just think that Michael Cera is theworst thing since unsliced bread, and these are people who shouldclearly avoid this film for the sole reason that it contains MichaelCera. I think he works well in this role. There are times where theactor can make or break a film, but I don't see Cera breaking thisfilm.Scott Pilgrim probably won't be breaking any box office records, butI'd like to think that word of mouth can help this film get theattention it deserves from the audiences that would most appreciate it,which would be those who enjoy classic video game culture and theinteresting characters in this film who live in a world which many aNintendo Power subscriber could only dream of.Just don't go in thinking you're going to see Shaun of the Dead or HotFuzz, as you'll likely be disappointed. This is a very different film, but I would say that it's trying to have as much fun as either ofWright's other two most popular films.

Amazing in all ways

Certainly this is one of the best movies of this kind i've ever seen!Michael Cera is an awesome actor and the whole actors seems to followhis great acting skills on this movie...The visual effects used on this movie are close to perfection and theway things happens on the movie, everything.. just awesome! For surethis is a 'Must see' movie... My only regret is that i had to watch iton TV, not on the theater..I also forget to say: the soundtrack used in this movie is more thanawesome! I don't know if all those musics are real musics or if theywere made for the movie.. but they fit perfectly on all scenes!Put your Home Theater lauder as you can and play the music and you willend like me: clapping alone at the end of the movie!

BUY THIS MOVIE!

This review is from: Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (DVD) It is a darn shame that a movie this good should have had such a lackluster run at the box office. On the surface it probably appealed to a rather narrow target audience, but that would be wrongly judging a book by its cover. Some reviews said that only teens and early-20-somethings would like this, but I'm 34 and I love it. It is still a solid movie that deserves more credit--in box office receipts and critical acclaim--that it got.If you read or at least skim the graphic novels by O'Malley, you will like the fact that the movie adheres to the books closely. For some graphic novels this is a curse but for "Scott Pilgrim" it is a good thing (plug for books). The music in here is awesome (plug for soundtrack). Plus, I think asian chicks are H-O-T, and Ellen Wong is very easy to look at.My one reservation is that, while I like Michael Cera's downbeat acting style and pretty much own everything he's starred in, he isn't the ideal actor for this role. The books have a Scott who's more assertive while Michael Cera's portrayal is anything but (except for the fight scenes--here he kicks butt). My vote: get this movie, and don't let it collect dust on your shelf.

Amazing movie. Fresh, revolutionary, fun. Any child of the video games era should fall in love with this movie.

Commentary!

Ohmygosh, I love this movie so hard. I really didn't think I was going to enjoy it, but I was (thankfully) persuaded to. I saw it twice in theaters and now I own it. And, I just have to say, I am currently watching the Anna Kendrick/Aubrey Plaza/Kieran Culkin/Mark Webber commentary. It's pretty great.

Absolutely everything I expected, a cult classic on the way!

I was so lucky to get a ticket to the pre-screening of this movie on mybirthday, and from the first 5 seconds (the 8-bit Universal logo), Iknew I was in for an enjoyable ride. I had read the comic books, whichare great, so I (sorta) knew what I was going to see, and I got all myexpectations fulfilled. Though the movie itself looks and feels exactlylike a comic book, the movie takes different turns than the comic, forexample, all the battles in the movie are different. It's completelystuffed with geeky references, and is absolutely the funniest film I'veseen this year. Though I strongly recommend that you read the comicbefore seeing it, or else you might be completely lost. I can'tpossibly think of any director that would turn this comic into a bettermovie, Edgar Wright has just the amount of craziness needed. Overall, atotal nerd-gasm, if you read the comic, or if you're a geek looking fora pleasant afternoon, quit WoW, get off your lazy ass, and GO SEE SCOTTPILGRIM VS. THE WORLD! It's totally worth the money and time! (By theway, I'm not happy with this movie only placing 5th in the USA, thisshould(and can) be a cult classic on the way!)

LOVED!

This review is from: Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo) (Blu-ray) If you have ever played an 8-bit game, you will most likely love this movie! You really have to keep up as the comedy can sometimes runaway from you! And the music is great too! Vegans must die!

Cutting Edge Fun for Almost the Whole Family

I really wasn't expecting too much, but Michael Cera once again is able to deliver in his inimitable teenage angst manner. There are tremendous sight gags, sound effects, Seinfeld allusions, and Jason Schwartzman really hits his stride as a villain. Warning:Not for preteens, especially the bonus features which explode many f-bombs.

(2012-03-22 09:38:45)

Fun frantic and clever with a few minor issues

22-year-old Canadian slacker Scott Pilgrim faces ridicule from his friends and bandmates when he hooks up with 17-year-old high-schooler Knives Chau. However, his life becomes infinitely more complicated when he dumps Chau for enigmatically cool American girl Ramona Flowers. Flowers' seven 'evil exes' have decided that Scott must defeat them all in order to date Ramona. Scott is forced into seven battles of escalating difficulty as he tries to win Ramona's heart and make amends for his rough treatment of Chau.Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is an interesting film. It's a full-scale, all-out assault on the viewer's sensibilities, with radical shifts of tone and pace as the film moves from what appears to be a grounded comedy with some geeky overtones to a flat-out fantastical cartoon-made-flesh, with characters levitating through the air and unleashing 'demon hipster chicks' in battle, before shifting back to an intense relationship drama for five minutes before side-shifting into a bloodless Tarantino movie. In many ways cool, but it makes for an at times uneven film. The movie is directed by Edgar Wright, who previously helmed the flicks Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz and the TV series Spaced. This film marks his first major work without the partnership of Simon Pegg (who was writing and filming Paul at the same time; Pegg and Wright will apparently be soon reconvening for a third film). The film also marks Wright's first work with an American-sized movie budget: Scott Pilgrim cost ten times as much as Hot Fuzz and twenty times as much as Shaun of the Dead to make and every cent of it can be seen on screen. The visuals in the movie are kinetic, explosive and rich (multiple viewings may be required to take everything in), though never too confusing. The fight scenes are pretty good, and the choreography makes you believe that Michael Cera could kick some backside, which is an impressive achievement. As an action movie - the American Kung Fu Hustle is a comparison I've seen made - it works very well.As a relationship drama/comedy it's more varied. It's not helped that central character Scott Pilgrim is rather unlikable. I know that's the point of both comic and film, but he doesn't really improve and become more likable over the course of the film, at least not until the last few seconds of the movie. Michael Cera is also pretty much just Michael Cera in the film, only really springing to life during the battles (particularly the bass battle, when he brings the required attitude) and the rest of the time doing his whiny indie actor spiel, which risks becoming tiresome. In a film full of villains exploding into coins, music-summoned CGI dragons and people reincarnating after using an 'extra life', the most fantastical thing is that any of these women would find Pilgrim even remotely attractive.Luckily, the rest of the cast is almost flawlessly excellent. Kieran Culkin is superb as Pilgrim's 'cool gay flatmate' who acts as his moral compass, whilst Anna Pill is suitably demented as drummer Kim (whose band introductions are among the funnier things in the film). Ellen Wong and Mary Elizabeth Winstead are both great as Scott's love interests Knives Chau and Ramona Flowers. Winstead hits the note that Cera fails to by successfully portraying a sympathetic character despite her many bad decisions and judgment calls. The film also has a few nice ironic cameo appearances. Brandon Routh (the ex-Superman) and Chris Evans (Captain America/the Human Torch) play two of Ramona's evil exes, a rival bassist with psi-powers gained through veganism and a skateboarder-turned-action-movie-star. Both actors take the mickey out of their tough guy roles with excellent comic timing, not to mention Wright reusing the Spaced approach of getting characters to do things they don't want to by using the magic phrase, "There's girls watching".Once you get past the great performances (a variable lead aside) and startling visuals, the movie is effectively a metaphor for characters having to confront the demons of their past and not let bad history restrict the potential for happiness in the future. Or something along those lines. It's also a crazy action flick with tons of excellent geek references which will appeal to those who know what Scott Pilgrim is talking about when he references the bassline to the theme tune for Final Fantasy II (which I believe is actually Final Fantasy V, but given a different number due to...sorry, getting off-topic there) and where the beautiful 'L word' is 'lesbian'.Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (****) goes on a little too long and towards the end becomes repetitive (I think it might have worked better with five evil exes), and Wright's visual brilliance becomes a little over-manic when not restrained by a stronger writing partner like Simon Pegg, but overall this is a fun and frantic movie with strong performances and an offbeat sense of humour.

Massively entertaining.

The fact that Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz director Edgar Wright hascrafted a tremendously stylish flick isn't all that surprising. That hemanaged to match that style with just as much substance is quiteextraordinary though. Scott Pilgrim may be live-action anime completewith hyper-chic, arcade-esquire visuals, but these awesome effectswouldn't carry your interest for two hours if it wasn't for theintelligent and meaningful tale underneath. That a story of howdifficult, and rewarding, love can be is packaged in monumentally funset-pieces and biting humour is exactly the reason why Pilgrim is oneof the year's best films to date. After seeing the trailer I was unsure whether or not I would enjoy thecomputer game feel of the movie, however, any ambivalence towards thefilm was dashed immediately once it began. The action – and there is alot of action – is infused with a unique streak of rambunctiousnessthat only heightens the experience, most splendidly realised in theclash between Pilgrim and rival bassist Todd Ingram. Furthermore, inWright's capable hands the subtle tics and icons that are litteredthroughout the picture stay inventive and amusing, never veering intooverbearing or unwelcome territory. In his first feature film without regular acting duo Simon Pegg andNick Frost, Wright has assembled a pitch-perfect cast, starting withhis leading man. Not exactly playing against type, but certainlyunleashing his action chops more than ever before, Cera proves yetagain he's the go-to guy if you're looking for 'geeky-cool'. Pilgrim'seffortlessly likable thanks to Cera, he's outrageously funny withoutever playing it up and he wears his heart on his sleeve in a mannerthat doesn't become whiny or annoying. Put quite simply, if he doesn'twin over Ramona by the closing credits you'll be as heart-broken ashim. He may be the eponymous hero, but this isn't a one-man show for Cera. The eclectic supporting cast are superb and at times even steal theshow. As the hair colour-changing Ramona, Winstead is strangelyintriguing and attractive, her enigmatic attitude all the moreenticing. Of the numerous splenetic exes, Routh and Evans are the pickof the bunch, the former's vegan guitarist and the latter's egotisticalmovie star both offering up plenty of laughs. Elsewhere Culkin ishilarious as Scott's gay roommate who'll say what no-one else will,Wong makes for the ideal love-struck high-schooler swooning overPilgrim and comedienne Plaza provides more of the straight-faced comedythat made her stand out in Funny People.Massively entertaining, Pilgrim delights with its mixed bag of mesmericgoodies.4.5 out of 5 (1 - Rubbish, 2 - Ordinary, 3 - Good, 4 - Excellent, 5 -Classic)

Imagination required

This movie is way over the top in the best way possible. I felt like I was watching a more adult-like cartoon because some of the things they do in the movie are just too much, but in a good way. This movie has a ton of video game references the entire time that would make you at least smirk at how creative they would use the reference. The only ways I can understand that someone wouldn't like this movie is if they don't have an imagination or they really hate games and games bother them. I'd highly recommend this movie, I'm putting it up in my top 3 movies this year.

Please review the Blu-Ray.

This review is from: Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo) (Blu-ray) I see alot of reviews for this movie. Some good, some bad. I see absolutely no reviews of the Blu-Ray copy of this movie; stop wasting our time. If you didn't like this movie, it's because you're either too old, or too old-at-heart, simple as that. This movie was made for blu-ray and pounding 360 degree surround sound. I want to hear reviews of the actual blu-ray, not your psuedo-intellectual criticism of the movie.

More description is needed

This review is from: Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (DVD) This video came in fast and had no problem with the seller. The only thing I did not like about this item is that it had a "Rental" sticker on the DVD. This was a gift to someone for Christmas and I felt embarrased that I gave them a Rental copy of this movie. I wish it had been noted in the description because I would have bought this item from another seller.

This movie was pretty awesome. I was not expecting it to be that good. The cast did a great job doing there parts. Fun and creative is the two words that describe this movie
