TWOT-Total Waste Of TimeWARNING*****Do not waste your valuable time watching this trash thatnever goes anywhere. However if the sound of a Ferrari engine orwatching someone play a video game is enough to satisfy your sensesthen this is the motion picture for you! Sofia Coppola I hope isashamed to release this insult to movie fans. This is a motion picturethat you continually wait for some event to occur and it never does. Ithas about 5 minutes of content and the rest is useless filler of boringmindless over extended scenes to fill in the remaining 92 minutes. Ishould have stuck to my 5 minute policy: If it seems bad after 5minutes in, it will probably be disappointing. It was totally offensivethat they have the nerve to charge us to view this crap. What hashappened to standards in the industry to allow a motion picture of thislow caliber to be released. I am blown away by the rating attached tothis thing, the director, cast and crew members must have a huge poolof family and friends to pull the rating of this thing above a 2! |

What was the story again?Sofia Coppola has made movies based on personal experiences. Lost InTranslation detailed on her relationship with then-husband, SpikeJonze. Marie Antoinette explained her stature as the daughter of awell-known figure who faces a new world full of strangers. Somewherebriefs us on how she felt when her father, Francis Ford Coppola wasaround. But, that isn't what Somewhere is all about. Somewhere becomes thememories of the father, played by Stephen Dorff rather than thedaughter, played by Elle Fanning. After I watched L.I.T, I thoughtCoppola has made an avant garde classic. After Marie Antoinette, I feltshe could make an art film and could resemble a Kubrick heiress. But,Somewhere takes her nowhere. And, a GOLDEN "FREAKING" LION award?? Yougotta be kidding me! The film excluding those long shots would be lessthan 60 minutes. How big was her screenplay? 55 pages? But, everyfilmmaker makes a bad film. Hell, Daddy Coppola made Jack! |

Somewhere is nowhere. The fallow imagination of Sophia Coppola is on drab display in thistorpid mimic of Lost in Translation featuring a similar jaded, demoralized male movie star, and idealistic youthful innocent femalewith a cold impersonal hotel as the main stage all marinated inAntonionni ennui. Johnny Marco loves fast cars and hot blonds. Living the bacchanalianlife style at the Château Marmont he rents a race track to driveobscene speeds in his Ferrari and has pole dancers with portableequipment bring the show to his place. He is also a dad and when the exunloads the kid on him for a brief stay he begins to question, wellmaybe look serious and sober for a moment, the emptiness of hisswinging life style. The first half hour of Somewhere demands a lot of patience with noreward at the end just a slight nudge forward with the entrance of ElleFanning as the daughter into world of Johnny which gets even duller ashe babysits and gets some quality time in. While the two share sometender moments Coppola remains more concerned with telling her story byway of vapid compositions of an LA wasteland where ice cold beautieswillingly flash their assets anywhere anytime. Packing onpretentiousness takes time and while Somewhere is brief for a featureit's a slow go of high grade tedium. Lost in Translation was far from amasterpiece but it offered some striking visuals, captured the energyand beauty of Tokyo and Kyoto, had auteur Bill Murray's contributionand above all a fresh originality. With all its glaring comparisons itsclear Coppola has stretched little, merely walked down the hall to thenext room of The Hotel Melancholy and knocked on the door. Somewhere isnowhere. |

It's about doing things together. The simple act of cooking, eating, lounging, hanging out. |

Excruciatingly narcissistic, "Somewhere" is a suspect milieu satire that favors enforced glamour over narrative complexity. This is one of the worst films of 2010. |

As in Lost in Translation, Coppola keeps an eye out for the broken places. That's when Somewhere is really something. |

Somewhere features dead-on-the-inside people looking pensively into their bowls of pasta. Some call this reality, I call it bloody boring. |

A Slow DanceJohnny Marco (Dorf) is a movie actor who lives the good life in a hotelpopulated by various stars from time to time. His ex-wife drops offtheir 11-year old daughter, Cleo (Fanning), and then the ex goes off tofind herself.Johnny Marco may live the good life, but he is not enamored with starstatus. He does the usual PR things to promote his movies, but he is alonely guy and doesn't find much meaning in his life The opening sceneto the movie actually shows what his life is like. We witness hissports car going round and round on a race track and then it stops andhe ends up in the place he started. Maybe the last scene in the moviereminds us of that race track, but this time there is no circle. This director is very frugal in that she doesn't allow the camera tomove. The camera stays in one place and everything is locked in. Somemay say the scenes of head shots of Johnny et al are too long and thescenes needs to move on. They do, but in her good time. Some may usethis time to hit the fridge, bathroom etc. There is very littledialogue and we are left to figure out the character's thinking at thetime. I used to do that with my cats. They didn't talk or move mucheither. Or did they used to do that with me? Hard one to figure out. So Johnny gets to spend some time with his daughter and they have funtogether in a low key comfortable way. We are ambivalent about Johnny, but we do care for Cleo who is caught between two parents who don'treally want to cope with her in the long run. When Cleo is on thescene, the movie picks up some but when she leaves for camp we are backto the same old drifting Johnny, but then he is hit with a wake upcall. And, it is here that you know. You just know. See, you have toread into this as I did. Hey, when there isn't much dialogue or rantingand raving, one has to read things into things. Only then can wedetermine that Johnny is actually now going somewhere.Oh, the only star we did see at that hotel is Benicio Del Toro. Johnnysees him in the elevator and they exchange "heys" and give each othertheir respective room locations. That was it. Am thinking that Del Torowas actually at the hotel (where Johnny stays) and the Director askedhim to accommodate the movie to give it more credence, so to speak, seeing as there were no other stars around for the shooting. Of course,I could be wrong with this reading into things. HA !Those of you who saw the director's movie Lost in Translation may thinkthat this one is equal to it. It is not. It is completely different, but both are rated by me in the B category. This isn't for everyone and I knew coming in that this would be a slowdance; and sometimes, somehow, somewhere you need one from time to time.HA !Violence: No. Sex: Yes, one time, but nothing is seen. Nudity: Yes,quick shots throughout. Pole Dancing Girls: Yes, skimpy clothing, sexyyes, but not erotic. Language: No. |

Deeper than you would thinkFirst time I went to see this film I was like wow, this is a very longboring empty films but curiously it kind of stayed with me, after Ileft the cinema I felt quite sad and some images came back to me, stuffI really like (the pole dancers) and other stuff I was wondering weredoing there. So I went to see it again, and loved it. This film is like a jigsaw, there's more to it than you actually see, there's glimpses ofinformations here and there, like the beginning where the car is racingin circles over and over, then later on the car stops in the middle ofBeverly Hills and the protagonists are stucked not knowing what to doand then towards the end the actor stops outside of LA in the countryside and finally knows what to do ... carry on and walk ... this filmfull of metaphors is also about Los Angeles. It's not about being famous, but about being an adult and not beingable to grow up, about being lost and trap in a routine and as I said afilm about LA. Those who thinks Coppola is just a rich kid who makesfilm about Hollywood are in the wrong. She does films about what sheknows. The film could be remade with a factory worker and it wouldwork. And the same people who criticise Coppola would say it's genius. Coppola is not cold, there's some wonderful scenes of intimacy betweenthe actor and his daughter, the pole dancers scenes are actuallysurprisingly fresh and the scene of the Château Marmont's member ofstaff singing with a guitar is really sweet. If anything this film is a bit clumsy, naive and a bit pretentious butnot bad. It's all about feelings and using your brain. |

If you hated not knowing what Murray whispered to Johansson at the end of Lost in Translation, you will hate Somewhere. Conversely, if you loved the fact that you don't know what he whispered, you will appreciate the beauty that Somewhere contains. |

Life as it is. Must watchIf you are already a fan of Sophia Copolla's work 'Somewhere' will notcome to you as a surprise. It's just slow as the real life itself butstrongly emotional with that much natural acting and storytelling.Hardly any dramatic lines or untrue to life hyper events, 'Somewhere'is just a mere reflection of dull reality of living.Johnny Marco (Played by Stephen Dorff- Public Enemies) is a Hollywoodactor. Though his fame surrounds him to the brim, in side he is just abeaten up lonely soul. His wife is not with him anymore and he ismissing not spending quality time with his daughter. Just spendinglonely nights while hooking up with random over night girls his lifeseems to be out of place and has no meaning. But once his daughterreturns to her and he gets to spend some time with her he realize thathis life needs a change. And that change seems complicated.'Somehwere' is a painfully slow movie. If you can live the first fewminutes you will realize how slow and boring it can be. But it screamsof the life of the main character and let you live his insides. As afan if you do not open up your mind and heart to the story and placeyourself right in the middle of it there is a fair chance that you willwalk out after the 20 mts. But if you hang on the story it starts tomake a little sense but don't expect it to be a 007 ride.Johnny Marco is a lonely soul. With the random acts of his day it justpurely rectifies his mistakes. At times he just fall asleep watchingpole dancers in his bedroom and at time he randomly follow a blond in aMercedes until she disappear. At times he is amongst his fans andgiving interviews to the TV and attending international movie awardsbut all of those does not bring him peace and fill his cup. Maybe thereality is not that pretty after all for the famous.'Somehwere' is a drama. And in the pure meaning of drama it is. It hasa simple story line yet powerful performance and delivery. At the endof it you might feel something different than me. Maybe you will scoldme if you watch it after reading this review. Or maybe you willrecommend it to someone else. Either way you will be a part of a goodmovie experience and you will not be blamed for living the SophiaCopolla magic.read more reviews at flickshout.blogspot.com |

somewhere movie reviewThis review is from: Somewhere [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray) I just watched somewhere, and really enjoyed it, but I could'NT get behind the no-so explanitory ending,as the dad simply drives off, after dropping his 11yr old daughter, CLEO( played by (Ellen fanning). But the movie begins on a slow, but heartwarming note, as her father played by Stephen Dorph, first realizes that things are not as they seem when his ex tells him. she's not comming back and tells him his daughter will be comming to spend her summer vacation with him, but she only spends a portion of it with him. Suddenly, as he prepares for his next gig, Chloe suddenly. Shows up at his hotel room, realizing she's just as lost as he is. As the film moves on, Chloe tell him that she's dropped, by on summer vacation.Through their time together, they developed a bond, as he learns she can cook, clean, iceskate, dance, and draw. They wind up finding out, family is closer than you think. So the film concludes, as he takes his daughter Chloe, back to the airport to return to her town where her summer was in progress. However I did e joy the father, daughter theme of the film. All in all, it was very satisfying, and moving. Ellen Fanning, s performance was excellent. And that brought the film from a c grade, to a high 88% bgrade. |

hard to rate movie: very slow rythm...which starts right away from Scene 1 with a sports car making long endless circles in the dust. And the following movie looks like an attempt to show the daily spyral of someone very famous into personal abyss. Which it does show very well. But it takes true grit to survive the slowness of it. A lot of gratituous nudity. Overall as mildly depressing, as the lead character's life, but what is particularly nice - drama-free.But interesting nevertheless, showing what may be a window into the real lives of Hollywood cream crowd, except that I think it could have been better if it was in a different gear.I think it's really worth watching if you can muster the lethargic pace well. |

Bless Coppola for keeping her camera still, but she goes to the other extreme, of European minimalism. Like Johnny, the movie is an object in stasis. |

Somewhere actually NowhereI found the movie really boring, the worst I've ever seen. It startswith a scene that wasgoes on and on, without changeing the view of thecamera, so you just hear the noises of the cars going in circles; youget the feeling that it is never ending because it runs like 10 timesor more... I guess the filmmaker wanted to bring that feeling but itwould be enough 3 or 4 times. The same thing happens in the hotel, theyshow the 2 girls dancing and so it's getting monoton, because it takesto long and so is almost the whole movie. And even in the end when theHollywood Star lets go even his car he remains lost and no spiritualsense is given to his life... |
