Terrible film that covered a poor storyline with shock tacticsAt certain points this film made the entire cinema audience wince withdisgust and groan with a sick feeling from what they were watching. Agood reaction from a horror film I hear you say, well yes and no.You see the storyline spans all of 10 mins and as a result it almostseems as though the director was trying to think up of ways to keep upinterest by getting gradually more perverse. Bit of blood and guts, done. Now what?....hmmm maybe an interspecies sex scene, done. Hmmmkind of stuck now, perhaps an interspecies rape scene? yep, yep thatsounds good, run it.The two leads, Brody and Polley, present plenty of dim moments evidentin most horror movies, which leave you asking 'really? Why the hellhave you done that?' when a simple, much less ridiculous solutionpresents itself. This in-turn led me to disliking them somewhat, especially Polley who by the end I was literally crossing my fingersshe was the next on the hitlist. The only positive thing I can say about this film is a big hats off tothe prosthetics/animation team, creating a creature which was very wellput together and at no stage looked like a plasticine 'jason and theargonauts' remake. |

Splice, my new favourite filmThis movie easily made it onto my list of favourites for so manyreasons. The CG was extremely impressive, the cast and theirperformances were convincing and effective, the character Dren issimultaneously haunting, beautiful and terrifying and all by herselfevokes every emotion on the scale and the story is challenging andintelligent. There are entertaining surprises and twists along the wayand this film seems to have been made in perfect timing to ignitediscussion over where society will stand over the issues of humancloning, hybrids and genetic sciences. I predict this film will becomea classic and it is simply a must see. |

New worst movie ever...Don't waste your time or money. This was the worst movie I've ever seen. Any other awful movie I've seen in my entire life is now obsolete. The science is interesting - far out but interesting.... but that's all lost because the "scientists" are so unbelievably stupid. Some examples:This creature stabbed me with its stinger and threw me into convulsions - let's put it in a dress and pretend it's our daughter!Hey, the thing I made in a lab and is bizarre in every imaginable way looks a LITTLE like a chick - I think I'll have sex with it!When our genetic experiment that we know virtually nothing about "dies" - lets bury it in the back yard, not burn it. We'll burn EVERYTHING else though.Anyone who writes a review about this movie greater than one star needs to quit crystal meth. |

left you guessingNot a bad film, a little slow at times. The special effects were very good. The film turned a little too porn to be considered seriously. Take the old 50's scifi movies with the B movie plots and add 2010 computer effects....tadah you have "splice" |

Splice - Appropriate Title, Because Film Steals From Many PredecessorsThis review is from: Splice (Amazon Instant Video) This movie is a combination of Frankenstein, ET, Gremlins, and similar films. It is moderately entertaining, although the lead characters -- including the animal-human hybrid -- are excruciatingly painful and annoying to watch. Gosh - I wanted them all to die throughout the film. Yet, I still made it through. The 1- and 2-star reviewers are having histrionic fits over nothing. Ignore them. |

Profanity in SpliceI find it amusing/annoying that in the Parent Guide Advisory sectionfor profanity it states "Some explicit language, nothing too offensive.F**k is said 15 times." I understood the advisory comments were tostate facts and not opinions and beliefs. I do not understand why thatpersonal opinion was not removed from the advisory. I, as a parent andpersonally, find the use the "f" word highly offensive in any contextand the use of the word 15 times extends far beyond the boundaries ofoffense for me. I appreciate the parent guide advisory section as itdoes give a good overview of the content that I wish to expose mychildren as well as myself to. I choose to evaluate the content of amovie based on my own values. All "R" rated movies (although most) arenot laced with profanity and sex, i.e. The Passion of the Christ andThe Wolfman. I will decide for me what is or isn't offensive. So in thewords of Jack Webb- "Just the Facts Please"- no opinions |

IdiotsThe two main characters are idiots. They are complete morons. If idiocy would have been an Olympic sport, the would have been soidiotic to only get the silver medal. (Thanks, Harpo)Whenever they are faced with a choice, they keep doing the worstpossible choice. This obviously mars the whole film, making it so unbelievable tocompletely ruin it.My capacity for suspension of disbelief, while looking a film, is quitehigh, but yesterday it left me after the first ten minutes of the movieand went out for a soda, leaving me in there.Going to the dentist is better then watching this movie. |

Definitely worth seeing. Probably more than once. This movie is not what you might think. I would not classify it as a'horror' movie. It is dark and disturbing at times but I would file itunder Sci Fi Suspense. It is kind of like a new age 'Frankenstein' mixed with 'Rosemary'sBaby'. The actress who plays Dren is amazing in that she conveys allthe emotional depth of the character with no dialogue. It could haveeasily left the character seeming flat or one dimensional. It couldalso have gone the other way and come off 'over the top' and cheezy. This is NOT a 'sneak the children in with you' movie. Leave them athome on this one.I may very well buy it when it comes out on DVD. I think I need asecond look. Here is to my sincere hope that they don't wreck it by making a sequel.Kudos to the French company for being brave enough to make it and thatHollywood didn't get it's hands on it. Had that happened, it reallycould have stunk up the place! |

The filmmakers and producers deserve great praise for their ambition and faith in a film that steps outside of the Hollywood comfort zone, even if the product doesn't have the execution to match. |

Frankenstein anno 2010I wont say that it is a great movie, therefore it lacks on gore orsuspense. Wait a minute. I would categorize it under science fictionhorror. In fact it's the story of Frankenstein updated to 2010. Whensuperstar genetic engineers Clive (Adrien Brody) and Elsa (SarahPolley) specialize in splicing together DNA from different animals tocreate incredible new creatures they want to know what would happen, insecret, if they splice DNA from that creature with human DNA. The firsthour of the movie it's all about looking at the created thing with loveand understanding but just like Frankenstein, things start to go wrong.Dren, as it is called turns against her creators. When that happens weare too far into the movie to say that we have a gem. The last 40minutes things starts happening, a bit too late but what happens looksokay. The CGI is excellent and doesn't bother at all even for me , anold school FX man. Delphine Chanéac also as Dren gives a goodperformance, even with her CGI body. If you aren't bothered with thefirst part being a bit too long than you can watch it easily but if youare into gore or real horror than it isn't really for you at all, ifyou could only 'splice' the movie and watch the second part it would bea gem. |

Science!"So like, I'm thinking about writing this movie. It's gonna be aboutscience n'stuff." Seriously, these words must have gone through thewriter's mind before composing this atrocity at least once.Throughout this movie I had to wonder, what is the point of this? Arethey saying that gene splicing is only going to create monsters? Therecurring theme is that 'some things should just never be done'. Thingslike leaving the cave. Starting a fire. Inventing a wheel. These thingsshould never be done! Look at the horror that will result! (Fires andcars with wheels KILL PEOPLE) Okay so maybe I'm reading a bit much intowhat is clearly supposed to be a horror flick. I mean it's not likethey did a bit of research before writing this, so I can assume it'sjust throwaway scares. I could go on for hours about the pseudoscienceused in this movie but people would probably be like 'oh you're justprojecting realism on a work of fiction. We don't need things likesettings to enjoy a movie!' I found myself wondering why not one buttwo mad scientists were required for this movie. Why couldn't one ofthese hipster sciencey types put together two brain cells and stop theother from being insane? Love? Depravity? Who knows, it didn't makesense. The fact that the research group is called NERD makes me cringe. Couldwe have some acronym that's just a little less retarded? Maybe thisappeals to the facebook generation, but it's terribly cliché. WE'RENERDS LOL WE DO SCIENCE AND LISTEN TO HEAVY METAL.The actor playing Dern was talented. I mean zero lines and all yougotta do is twitch like a monkey on cocaine, but aside from that shewas pretty and talented. I think. So kids just remember to lock your doors, fasten your windows, and prayto god those evil scientists don't make any monsters that will fly downand stab you in the night! |

DrenThis movie was pretty good. it is not your normal slash them up creature film. i though it had more of a moral to the story than anything else. this movie should actually be under the gener of science fiction than horror. The scary thing about this movie is that could actually happen. I was very impressed by the actors and i'm glad that dren was not a full cgi creature it made it feal more real. well all in all this movie was good. |

You will remember this movieCanadian cinema is rarely good, let alone great. Of course many greatHollywood films owe their scenery to the Great White North that some ofus call their home, and a great many big name Hollywood actors, anddirectors are Canadian bred. Unfortunately films that actually hailfrom Canada often suck (Defendor and Gunless are two fairly recent, anddelightful exceptions) but this Canadian film from director VincenzoNatali is truly amazing. Don't believe the trailers this is not yourstandard horror movie, this is a smart, thoughtful, and very emotionalmovie that explores issues of science, society, and humanity. I wish Icould give it a ten because of how much of an impression it had on me,however that feels almost too generous. Yes it's missing something, that little touch of perfection that takes a great movie and makes itone of the greatest movies. Nonetheless I urge you all to rent thisfilm, you will not regret it.The movie stars Adrian Brody, Sarah Polley and Delphine Chanéac, threeactors that truly carry the film. Chanéac however is the true star, asshe portrays the scientific experiment named Dren throughout the film,as probably the most sympathetic monster of all time. Chanéac isbeautiful, and as shallow as it sounds it's her good looks that allowthe viewers to grow so attached to Dren, and it really humanizes thecharacter. The fact that many people still found her attractive whileshaved bald and made up to look like mutant creature speaks volumesabout her absolutely gorgeous face. Of course she's not just pretty, she is a fantastic actress, and displays so much emotion through herfeatures, getting essentially no dialogue yet somehow communicating somany complex ideas. Despite being a genetic monster you can't help butlook at Dren sometimes and go "Awwwww!"Brody and Polley portray a pair of young, renowned genetic scientists,Clive and Elsa, professional and romantic partners. The movie revolvesaround the two and their experiments with gene splicing, and earlyattempts to harness tissue for a medicinal wonder but the plot quicklyshies away from this when Elsa decides to mix in human DNA. Withoutgiving too much away I'll give you an idea of where the movie goes fromthere. The experiment ends up growing and the two take care of it insecret, at first for scientific reasons, but it becomes quite clearthey have a more personal interest in the result. The film is definitely a horror movie, with some very disturbingscenes, and one that I, nor anyone else who watched this movie will beable to forget (You'll know which one in particular when you watch thefilm), but the movie doesn't rely on them to be scary, and uses trueterror techniques to keep you tightly gripped. It's such an emotionalmovie, I cannot stress that enough, even non-horror fans should see"Splice" because it has so much more to offer than just fear. Icouldn't help but be reminded of the Alien films. Ignoring the factthat the creature in Alien had human DNA as an obvious connection, it'sSpliced's depraved sexual imagery that truly mirrors Alien. So sitdown, turn off the lights, and watch this movie. |

Seriously Having A Hard Time Trying To Remember A More Unpleasant Cinematic ExperienceOn our way out of the theater, we were all trying to recall a moviethat might have been worse. Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon? The firstHulk movie? Sex And The City? Bring It On - In It To Win It? Jaws 3 In3D? I would watch them all again before wasting any more time on thistrue pile of waste. Right now I am resisting the urge to suppress myviolated recollection of this movie so I can warn the viewingpublic...and I can honestly say you would be better off getting aticket for ANY OTHER random movie than this one. I do not make thatstatement lightly. I have been a Sarah Polley fan since "Go", an AdrienBrody fan since "The Pianist", AND a Vincenzo Natali fan since "Cube",but stock in all their future cinematic endeavors will now be calledinto question because this movie was SO distasteful. "Why?" you ask? There are so many reason, I really don't know where to begin. First ofall, I'm extremely disappointed because the movie touts itself as aSci-Fi thriller. There is very little science-fiction, and the moviewas hardly scary. All nine people seated in the movie theater (whichshould have been my first hint this movie sucked) winced more as amatter of the unpleasant sexual activities on the screen than anycinematic suspense. Seriously. Imagine Jurassic Park where thezoo-keepers have sex with the dinosaurs, and you have an idea of themajor plot elements of this movie. And that's just the beginning, but Ireally have to end my testimony there because the movie was just thatunpleasant. Save your money and go see anything...or see nothing.Either one is a better choice than wasting your time and money on thismovie. |

Painful to watch. Some people have called this refreshing, so people have called itsurprising, some people have called it "the worst movie ever" (butsomeone always says that). No, this is not the worst movie ever, but I have a hard time calling itanything other than "Bad" or "disturbing" (and not in a good way). So,lets go in depth shall we? The acting is good, Adrien Brody does a goodjob in his role...and that's where I stop with compliments (and nocharacter was really developed all that well. They were namelesscaricatures of personalities. Brody "Scientist with apprehension" Elsa"woman scientist willing to do anything to succeed"). The story had waytoo many holes, that someone with any knowledge of science would bepained to watch. And also, we're supposed to believe that twoBiochemists would make the series of stupid decisions that they did, assuch, the scripting, and lines become unreasonable quickly. The scenesare basically set in two places, and that becomes boring. A lab, and ashed. The backdrop quickly fades and you are forced to listen to twopeople stumble in to their own mess, farther and farther. The music, was minimal, which was good, but also had you feeling like somethingwas going to jump out, and it never did. The tension was felt, but wasnever released. Pair all this, with an ending that is impossible, you get what I justsaw. A movie that was good for a laugh(most of the audience was) and amovie that is good to bury your face in your palms and wonder "whowould do this?"A warning as well, this movie has some potentially disturbing imagesand actions, so take that to heart before you see it...if you do.3/10 save your money, and your time. |

See Jenifer insteadThe science fiction aspects of this movie were presented in a very lameand uninteresting, unbelievable way.Over all it wasn't very scary or very original. The creaturetransformations reminded me of how the creature in Jeepers Creepersdevelops... As for the psychological aspects of this film... It ripsoff to an extent ideas that were more disturbingly presented in"Jenifer" from the Masters of Horror series on Show time... which were1 hour films... http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0643108/ If you watch a lotof movies that aren't in the mainstream then Splice will be nothingnew. If you only watch big summer blockbusters and thought you werewalking into another monster movie then I'm sure that Splice will be afascinating and surprising movie for you.It is funny at times, but overall kind of annoying and a little bitboring...for all of its twists I found it becoming very predictable inthe last half hour. This is the kind of story that works better in anhour format like an X-files episode. At feature length the story isdragged out... I think a half hour or so is filled just with the maincharacters trying to find the creature every time they return towhatever room its in- not a very original way to create suspense. Not bad for a laugh. |

50/50The trailers are a bit misleading. Once you get over that, the movie has some good spots but overall its just so/so. If you like the genre its probably worth a rent but only if you are a fan. I watched this in the theater and was disappointed as its totally a made for dvd movie. |
