Worth Watching

This review is from: Sucker Punch (Two-Disc Extended Edition) [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray) I liked this movie! People are very hard on it. Sure the narrative is a little rough. Could it use some smoothing? Yes. Is it hopeless? No. I found that the movie kept me entertained and the different venues for battles and plot progression kept the movie feeling fresh. If you are the kind of person who goes to the movies to be entertained still and not worried about whether or not this movie is the next Godfather or Inception or (insert some award winner here), then get it! Favorite part of this movie: Special Effects!!!!

Gee more rape fantasy stuff.. Yay!

I'm noticing a pattern with all of Snyder's movies... Rape. Heobviously must have some fetish, or he thinks most men have thisfetish, but we do not. I think you can have gorgeous girls dressed upand kicking &$$ without brutalizing them in order to get them torespond in a vigilante style fantasy world. I can't tell you how manygirls I've dated that had been abused in that fashion, nor was it sexyor fun for me to deal with the after effects of that abuse. I go to amovie like this to escape reality, not be reminded of it. I know thenerdy anime/manga crowd loves big breasted 12 year old girls beingbrutalized by tentacles or evil generals, but it's not sexy, nor is itfunny or cute. You nerds would know this if you ever had a gf. Thatbeing said I enjoyed 300, as did I enjoy Watchmen (to my surprise), butenough with the brutalization of women already. I question the type ofpsychological stability in a mind that continually goes to rape in hisportrayal of women. You had me with hot girls kicking &$$ in abeautiful fantasy world, but you lost me when you crapped all overwomen yet again and reminded me of how messed up this world is. IsSuperman going to be a deadbeat dad rapist in the new movie? Is itbecause nerds can't get girls that their entertainment has to involvetaking it forcefully? Tone it down a bit and you've got something thatcan appeal to men everywhere. Movies are supposed to be an escape fromreality.

Fun Flick

The movie portrays itself as something a little different and that as aviewer is exactly what you get. The characters have enough personalityto be of interest but none are really developed fully because of thesteady pace of the action sequence that are weaved into the story line. The dream scenes are visually dazzling and the action in them top rate. The dynamic between the actresses is very much that of a team and it'simpressive that many of the stunts and fight scenes were done by theactual actors in the film. I didn't find a real connection with any oneof the bunch but it was a movie that was worth seeing on the big screenjust for the stunning visuals. Solid Sci-fi/drama with some kick assfighting. Worth a look.

Guns, Garters and Cross-Genre-Neo-Retro-Anime-Live-Action Goodness!

There a many reasons I was (and remain) excited for the release of Suckerpunch: 1) An original concept by the director of such Graphic Novel adaptations as 300, Watchmen and the Upcoming Man of Steel Superman reboot project, too. 2.) I'm always ready for Retro-Neo-Anime-kick-a$$-Chicks, including the lovely Emily Browning as an institutionalized girl slated for a lobotomy who escapes to a reality as Babydoll along with 4 equally hot inmates the brash Rocket (Jena Malone), the street-wise Blondie (Vanessa Hudgens), the loyal Amber (Jamie Chung) and dear-reluctant Sweet-Pea (Abbie Cornish) as fact and fiction merge.3.)Suckerpunch is the first mainstream DieselPunk movie since 'Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow,' or 'Dark City' although it is not a pure example of the sub-genre as there's modern firearms and fantasy aspects present which diverges from traditional Dieselpunk. If you aren't familiar with the genre DieselPunk it's a term coined by by game designer Lewis, to include a WW II look along with stylistic influences of that period like Art Deco, pulp serial film cliffhangers , film noir, even pinups.Ultimately Suckerpunch's premise of removing us and characters from the 'real' world provides ammo for over-the-top action, but at the cost of creating cliched characters. While one can make an argument for the archetypes and roles assumed here, it can also be argued it can be too formulaic. The film's action scenes are epic, no question, but opportunities are missed to develop them. In the end a needed narrator closes the gaps in on-screen exposition with what can also be construed as a stylistic element and not a flaw incharacter development or storytelling. The story is largely akin to Alice in Wonderland meets the Anime feature of your choice.,, our incarcerated heroines band together to escape the hands of Blue (Oscar Isaac), Madam Gorski (Carla Gugino) and the High Roller (Jon Hamm) by collecting 5 symbolic items, a map, fire, a knife, a key and a mystery all while building their own sense of self-worth, of course. Having grown up with the Star Wars saga, the storytelling aspects of film scoring is a very important consideration for me; here Suckerpunch is a knockout (sorry). The soundtrack merges nicely with it's visuals, single songs framing scenes using clever covers, mash-ups and remixes from Queen, Bjork, The Pixies, The Beatles, Jefferson Airplane, Iggy Pop. Some featuring vocals from stars themselves, for example, Emily Browing's cover of Eurythmics'"Sweet Dreams Are Made Of This" Other casting includes Jonathan Perez as Magician, Vicky Lambert as The Countess, Danny Bristol as Little Tommy Soldier

You probably won't like it, but if you get it, it's one of the best movies ever

Let's face it. The rating isn't that good, the reviews are mixed andmeta-score is just plain bad. Why go see this movie? I admit, i went tosee it for the action (which, despite not "300" category is still verygood) and the booty - and since most people see only that the movie'srating is as it is. However, I got more than that.If you are able to see through action and girls-in-sparse clothingshots, you can enjoy a film that leaves you thinking about life. Itsure doesn't give all the answers, but gives it's opinions at best.Let me say it on other terms: Have you seen "7 samurai" and enjoyed it?Go see the movie open minded. Otherwise, just watch it if you want tosee more of what you saw in the trailer - mind numbing, but prettyfights.

In short: I feel gypped

I watched this movie because I thought it would be action packedsci-fi. I was a little worried by first few minutes as it seemed to bestarting off a long way from anything in the trailer. It then began tojump around a hell of a lot, first the lead goes to the mental home, then it's an orphanage, then it's a bordello. Oh well, I can cope withthat. Then she starts dancing... but wait! What's this? When she dancesshe closes her eyes and ends up in a fantasy world.... cue actionsequences that have no bearing on the plot. This goes on for a longtime. Then we find out she's been lobotomised and the entire film isall in her head. The end."Well" I thought to myself "That was a big kick in the teeth" The sadthing is it really could have worked but in order to give us the kickin the teeth ending of "it was all a dream" much of the direction, script and plot is misleading, contradictory and completely pointless.I don't see why this movie is being raved about by some. It's gotnothing going for it but a great trailer made from all the actionsequences that have no bearing on the plot at all.

Looks aren't everything. Case in point: Sucker Punch, a dazzling visual design that goes tone-deaf every time it opens its dumb mouth or makes claims to profundity.

Just go see it for yourself

I swear people just enjoy being sourpusses when it comes to being entertained. If you dont like something then fine it wasnt your cup of tea, but to walk around like you have to be impressed beyond your wildest dreams everytime you go see a movie is stupid. Why do people feel like they have to see a action movie with a ocscar performing plot is beyond me. I enjoyed sucker punch. When you see the trailer that is exactly what you get. Great visuals a pretty decent storyline and something just a little different than what we keep seeing over and over. And I said a little different. If you like 300 and Watchmen and and Sin City then you should like this movie. Just go see it for yourself dont shy away from bad reviews on here.

What have I been watching?

Did I see a bad remake of Kill Bill? Did I see a bad WWII movie? Did Isee a bad Manga movie? Did I see a bad remake of Fifth Element? Did Isee badly used Matrix effects? Did I see a bad remake of The Lord ofthe Rings? What did I see?! The story was such a big mess. There was no way to find a logicalpattern in it. It just didn't make any sense. If only there were somewriters to correct this way of movie making. Well, we can see thatmaking enough commercials about this movie makes people go to themovies. If I were 13 years old, I'd think I like it. Just like a 13year old girl would like to see the Justin Bieber movie. I think thatthis movie was not made for somebody like me.This movie was simply a waste of my time. now that I'm thinking aboutit, why am I wasting my time on this review ;)Boris out!

Those criticizing never saw it in the first place

I have seen many reviews here which say that this movie is a mindlessjoyride of CG action and scanty clad gals with no material in it.But beneath all the action and mindless killings, have you actuallyseen the story? Yes, I do agree that the screenplay can be summed up ina one-liner, but the way it has been presented with a fusion of realand imaginary worlds, culminating to a very well summed up ending, makes it worthwhile to have a second look, whilst trying to explorewhat it all had to offer. Special mention of equally applaud-worthysoundtrack ("'Where is my mind" in particular, because of its use atright places in the movie). You may say it's another adaptation of the "Invincible" kind of storynarration genre, but the similarities end just at the level ofimagination. Many say the chicks presented looked whorish, but hey, that was the need of the story (the asylum being depicted as a brothelin another world as seen by Baby Doll), the same goes with the actionscenes. And just for the hell of it all, it looked awesome with thestunning action visuals nevertheless.Snyder's movies are never appreciated in the first screening. It takestime to look at the story behind the action which he emphasize more on.But given his style of film-making, you can say that he's a QuentinTarantino of his own kind. His style may not appeal to the masses, butit sure is different in its own way.My advice to those who have rated this movie as just another mindlesspassable action flick ? Go watch it again, only this time, don't thinkabout the action, go beyond it to explore what it says "You have allthe weapons you need....Now fight ! " .

...kitsch slathered on top of kitsch, overindulgent in ways that makes the design of 'Burlesque' look positively tasteful.

sucker punch the let down

This review is from: Sucker Punch (Amazon Instant Video) this movie absolutely sucked.the charecters bring you into a dream world to cope with everyday problems.you enter the dream world like 4-5 times during the whole movie.it is sad that this whole movie is based around women whom are eye candy and that is what they push on you in this movie.as a man i don't care how good looking women are in a movie or how tight their clothing is.if the plot of the movie sucks the movie sucks plain and simple.I would rather go to the dentist than watch this again.

This Riot Girl Film Lives To Its' Name with Pride

Where the hell do you go when you've made a remake of a classic zombiefilm, two graphic novel adaptations (the former about heroic Spartanwarriors; the latter dysfunctional superheroes during the Cold War) andan animated take on valiant owls based on a kids' book? You get to takeon Superman…but, first, you direct an "everything but the kitchen sink"fantasy opus. That's what "Sucker Punch" is, the fifth film by ZackSnyder, and both are unabashedly madcap.Set in 1960s Vermont, reality is hell for pre-teen Babydoll (doe-eyedEmily Browning of "A Series of Unfortunate Events"). After her momdies, her stepdad nearly molesting her and her kid sister accidentallykilled during a defense, she's committed to an all-girl's asylum,co-managed by dutiful shrink Dr. Gorski, (heavy-Polish voiced CarlaGugino of "Elektra Luxx" and "Sin City") and morally dubious securitychief Blue (Oscar Issac of Ridley Scott's "Robin Hood").The place's no picnic, but Babydoll retreats to her off-beatimagination, where the asylum's a burlesque hall/bordello; Blue andGorski run the joint and she and the four inmates she's closeto-siblings Sweetpea (mature Abbie Cornish of "Bright Star" and "Legendof the Guardians") and Rocket (Joan Cusack-like Jena Malone of "DonnieDarko"); Amber (Jamie Chung of "Sorority Row") and Blondie (VanessaHudgens of the High School Musicals films) are "the talent".The four are also Babydoll's comrades in her fantasies as she dancesoff-screen; the quintet are gun-toting, sword-wielding bad ass girls, assigned by the mysterious sage Wiseman (Scott Glenn of "Training Day","The Right Stuff" and a good bud of Mr. Snyder's) to retrieve fiveitems that can liberate them. Giant stone samurais, German armyzombies, ogre knights, robots, a fire-breathing dragon and Blue are inthe way. Girl Power Go! "Punch", at 120 minutes, can be easily dismissed as a fringe popculture heap, but only if you've never grew up with comic books, HeavyMetal magazine, anime and video games (Go join a bingo club, you oldfarts!!!). Snyder ("Guardians", "Watchmen","300", the Dawn of the Deadremake) and co-scribe/school chum Steve Shibuya (a vet production handwho worked on the cult film, "Killer Klowns From Outer Space") have, and they're not ashamed. Why should they, having typed a passionproject that's trippy and layered? There are also the elements ofhypocrisy, individualism, sexual objectification, pedophilia(borderlined to get a PG-13 rating) and fetishism. At the helm,Snyder's a kid in a candy store with his trademark slow-motion actionand intricate shots (courtesy of d.p. Larry Fong). Imagine SamPeckinpah as a fanboy, and you got Zack Snyder.Human dramatics are simple but powerful here, thanks to the cast;ladies Browning, Cornish and Malone stand out from the five. Mr.Issac's creepy misogynistic as a security capo (reality) and amustachioed, Dean Martin-like pimp. Ms. Gugino (also of "Watchmen") isdurable as a mother her to the girls. The appearance of Jon Hamm ("MadMen", "The Town") as a lobotomist is strange but story vital. Mr. Glennnicely echoes the late David Carradine while sharing the same costumesense as Sam Jackson in "The Spirit". Look out for Zack's cub, Eli, andwin a prize! Most of Zack's production posse's here, including wardrobeguru Mike Wilkinson and music man Tyler Bates (helped by MarcusDeVries).Even if they don't see the plot's twist, gamers and riot girls willswoon after "Sucker Punch" hits them. They won't mind the ice packagainst their cheek.

I didnt even hear about this movie until yesterday when I saw the trailer for it. It came out today and I picked up the extended blu ray edition that includes blu ray/exteneded cut, dvd and digital copy. I was shocked, this is probably one of the best movies Ive seen this year. Id defanitley recommened you give this a view, Im sure it's a you like it or hate it type of movie but I must say I think the majority will like it. Action, Great acting, great surprise. Have we already found the worst film of the year?

(2012-04-21 05:24:41)

No Ocsars here but very entertaining!

This is one of those movies where you know, going in, that no one is going to be winning any presigeous awards but the entertainment value is very high! And you'll want to come back for multiple viewings. I know I will! That's it in a nut shell. This should be an awesome exhibition for those of us with home theater setups too!...

Nice Try

Sucker Punch is an attempt by Zack Snyder to tell a story on differentlevels of reality. A young girls is committed to an asylum by herviolent stepfather after accidentally killing her sister in an attemptto save her from being raped. She has five days until a lobotomy isperformed on her, instigated by her abusive stepfather. And now thingsget complicated: the asylum is a casino cum brothel where the girlshave to work as dancers and prostitutes and they have five days toescape. Baby Doll, the protagonist, finds out that she can mesmerizemen by lascivious dancing. And during those dances she escapes into afantasy world where she and her fellow inmates are superheroes on aquest. Eventually we find out that there is a third layer of reality. To some extent the film works but I got the impression that Snyder hadan idea that didn't really carry a feature film and fills the time withdrawn out action scenes. These are well made (although too hectic formy taste) but you never et engaged because you know it's only afantasy, it distracts from the real storyline and they are not reallyconnected. That's why to me the film as a whole does not work, it seemsto be patched together. Although I like the idea of these fantasies asam means of empowerment, it doesn't work because they became a means inthemselves. The ideas are hardly new: we have seen very similar ideasin The Prisoner, The Singing Detective and others. No so marks fororiginality there. It seems Snyder is at his best when he can focus ondirecting within the clear framework of a defined storyline.

I understand this movie's a little weird, and not everyone has to likeevery movie, but I went to see this one with about ten friends, andwhen they all made fun of it I felt attacked and isolated. One of usapologized for gathering everyone to see it, and I yelled, ''Iapologize for nothing!'' There's a tragic urgency to this story, liketelling it directly would be crass and compromise its integrity: nowonder it called for Australian actresses. Ozzies can be pretentiouslittle twats, but they know how to tell a parable, and their culture'smore advanced than ours because of that.I think a decade from now we'll be rightly ashamed we didn't give thismovie more credit.

Seriously? You're going to call this film epic?

Babydoll ends up in a mental institution, which magically transformsinto a dance club were she uses her imagination to keep her busy as sheand her friends go after objects to escape...In her imagination shefights demonic Samurai, Dragons, Robots and Nazi Zombies (Remind you ofa certain 'Call of Duty' game?)Simply put, this film is a mess. The storyline tries to be clever as itweaves in and out of fantasy and reality yet falls flat on its face atthe first hurdle, when we realise its a fantasy within afantasy....(Not the cleverest concept or cleverly executed)...Thenyou've got the actresses, beautiful to look at, but they lack theacting skills to pull off such a feat...And finally, thevisuals...Amazing...But thats about it..300 was visually stunning andit had the actors to give a strong as well as believable performance.Watchmen was bearable as I understood that he wished to show a darkerside of the superhero figure...But Suckerpunch is just purerubbish..the only scene I liked was the fight against the Samuraidemons, the rest was a waste of time.

A decent movie with forgettable characters

From the outset of the movie you can tell that the visual styling ofwhich Zack Snyder is famous for is there in all its glory, Every aspectof the film looks fantastic. The movie starts out with the "main character" Babydoll enduring somehorrific events which lead to her being committed to a psychiatrichospital. The hospital is were the journey begins and you get transported to thisalternative view of reality and there once again you're transported toa new reality where a quest must be completed and this is where thefilm sores. These quests areas are amazing and are beautiful to watch with greatmusic and combat. I would like to make this clear they were steampowered Germans and not Nazi's, it was clearly WW1. But sadly while all this amazing action is happening you just don'tcare about the characters performing it, You never build an attachmentto any of them as they're so flat and dull. Babydoll says about 5 linesin the whole movie and she has no expressions bar 1. Ultimately the movie ties together the some amazing scenes which willmake every nerd happy but the characters fail to make an impression andstory is vague at best, really it seems more like random encounters ina video game.It is still an enjoyable watch and worth a watch.
