The Same with CreativityAnother cliché switch-bodies movie with a slightly different dialog anddifferent actors. I personally favored Ryan Reynolds in this movie; heplayed a great irresponsible dummy or so. Whereas Jason Bateman alwayshas the same characteristics in all the roles he plays; but it works. The different lifestyles of the friends works well for this movie asdid "It's A Boy Girl Thing" with mixing the sexes. The best part isunderstanding what the person who switched lives with you actually hasto deal with in life; it's another hard lesson in life, but necessaryfor stubborn humans who only see themselves. It's a great lesson formovies, it's just been done so many times before. This movie is worthwatching because of its creativity. |

Worst film I've seen in 20 Years.I would imagine this film will appeal to a lot of men (and women Isuppose) who enjoy soft porn. There's a pornographic scene (of type)about every 5 minutes. After 5 of them, I walked out. There's isnothing funny about this film what-so-ever. It is cheap, bathroom humorat the lowest point. I'm actually disappointed in the actors that theywould stoup so low to even consider doing this film. Are they seriouslythat desperate. I didn't look up the information to see if this was adirector that originally did pornographic film because he might aswell. I haven't asked for my money back from a theater in 20 years. Idid today. |

An entertaining comedyThis film is about a successful lawyer and a hedonistic playboyswitching lives, after claiming that they admired each others' lives."The Change-Up" is an entertaining comedy. It is gross, borders onoffensive but is so funny. Both Jason Bateman and Ryan Reynolds are sobelievable in their original roles and their switched roles. Both ofthe actors are well cast, because their faces do match theirpersonalities before the switch.Underneath the non-serious entertainment, the film does make me wonderwhat it feels like to be another person. How we think it must be sogreat to be another person. This film could be the wake up call thatthe grass may not be greener on the other side. |

Atypical "Switch" Movie With Typical ResultsHave you ever seen a really really good "switch" movie? You know thetype; mother and daughter or father and son wish out loud that theywish they could be the other and then some lightning bolts flash and itmiraculously happens. Vice-versa, Freaky Friday, and Like Father LikeSon are a few examples. The difference with the Change Up is thatinstead of a father/son or mother/daughter switch we get two buddies toswitch things up. One happens to be a single playboy type who doesn'thold a job and the other is a corporate lawyer with a wife and threekids. The similarities to the other switcharoo movies is that like theother once mentioned, this is a rather mediocre to poor film as well.Perhaps the best of this genre is the Rob Schneider film, The HotChick, where he a low-life crook who switches with a prom queen. I gotto go to The Change Up for free, so it was no harm, no foul. Myrecommendation would be for you to wait until this movie comes out onDVD to see it rather than waste your money at the movies. Rating 4 of10 stars and that is being kind because I'm a Jason Bateman fan. |

LOved IT!They've been doing this types of movies since the 80's..But this one,in m.o..beats all~Jason Bateman in m.o is a star. He's an underrated actor as far as I'm concerned.. There isn't a movie,sitcom..that I've watched with him in it..and haven't lmao..I really hope he continues to choose movies where I don't regretrenting..Both actors did incredibly well..No over acting..under acting..Justplain funny as h*ll..There were a few gross parts..which is why I give it an 8...As apreference..I'm not fond of gross humor..But..At the end of theday..It's still a great movie..I've watched it 3 times so far in the last week..and lmao each time..My fav parts..*********Spoiler************The way Jason talks to the little girl in the car** **RyanRenolds..when he mixes his thumb in the drink..*how mad he is*..and many more...Just an all around great movie...If you're light of heart..cursing..rated R..then perhaps this won't befor you.. I wasn't sure I would like it..Being as I've seen these typesof movies.. At the end of the day though..Money was well spent..Lovedit.:D |

The Change-Up - everything's just not all that it's cracked up to beThis movie is about two friends who don't appreciate their lives andsecretly want to experience what the other has. One night they bothurinate in a fountain that seemingly has mystical powers. To theirconsternation the next morning they wake up in each other's bodies. This movie is reminiscent of such movies as 2003 Freaky Friday with asimilar theme except with a mother/daughter team. This movie allowedboth characters to appreciate what they had in their individual livesas well as what the other had. They realize that everything is not thatperfect in the other's life after all. It also helped them to provetheir worth and not take each other's life for granted. Together theyhelped each other work through the difficulty in their lives whiletaking a break from their own. It was fun, carefree and deep all at thesame time.I give this movie 5 stars |

Defiantly not a cliché and unique for it's styleThis movie certainly is the full works, Ryan Reynolds, Jason Bateman,Leslie Mann and Olivia Wilde. All did phenomenon on their characters;being funny, loving, touching the crowds hearts, amusing them in everyway possible. Many movies had the same same idea, 2 people switchingbodies and they go through each others daily tasks and life. We havethe same idea here but much more on detail on the daily life part, thatis because it's not just daily life we are shown here we also see lifeturning or changing events a normal person must go through as well. What was also great about this movie was not just the amount of detailsshown on the daily life part but also how Ryan Reynolds did greatplaying Jason Bateman's character and Bateman doing the very same forReynolds' character, the writer really did write the story and scriptfor this indeed carefully. This is my favorite comedy of this year forsure. Usually when you enter a great movie, you feel like it passed bysoo fast but this actually feels like a long 2 hours movie, which isenjoyable. |

child defecates in stars mouth!!!Well, the exclamation marks were mostly to build the mood in an effortto keep you awake, just like in the movie. Really, said scene takesplace about 1 minute into the movie, and is just overthetop and tediousat the same time. That rings pretty true to 'humourous' tone and levelof the rest of the flick. If said scene manages to bring an appreciative grimace to your face, for the amazing grossness of it, or because you find it original ortrue to what parenthood is all about, or whatever, my guess is you willappreciate this movie as a whole, too.If not, well... Time to do something else I guess. At least, don't sayI didn't warn you. The 4 stars are for decent cinematography and theactors making a fair effort. Not their fault this movie is a waste of time. |

Should be unlawfulI can not believe that there are children nude in this movie. With allthe sexual predators and pedophiles out there this is just wrong on somany levels. Children being exposed in movies makes me sick. Producersshould have charges filed against them. Parents of these children needcharges filed against them too. SHAME ON YOU!!!! This movie shows justhow low we can get for entertainment purposes. Have we truly sunk solow in our morals that we now think adding nude children to a movie isacceptable. It looks as if we will do ANYTHING for entertainment. Ihope these children are protected. There are laws against childpornography, this should not be any different. Children should never beput in movies nude for the entertainment of anyone for any reason. I amMAD AS HELL! The movie portrays men and women as if they have nointelligence and are have respect for decency. The language is sooffensive. The entire movie is offensive. |

The Change-Up: Excellent comedy for a frat-boyI saw the previews for the movie "The Change-Up" and it drew myinterest. From the director of "Wedding Crashers" and writers of "TheHangover" I thought how could I lose since I loved both those movies. While not a horrible film, it was not a "Wedding Crashers" or "TheHangover". To me it seemed like an extra long letter to "Penthouse"magazine - the kind of fiction a guy would dream up before gettingmarried and having a family.I like crude humor. I've been known to indulge in it myself but thegross jokes for the sake of being gross is stupid. It was great when Iwas twelve - I mean it was fun trying to out gross my friends but ifI'm paying $10 to see a film I expect a film for adults not 12 yearolds. If you base your whole film on humor heard in 6th grade then youhave some issues.F-bombs to or in front of children seems wrong no matter why it's beingdone and F-bombs just because you have an R-rated movie is stupid. Ohand I know there are filming tricks used so that they aren't reallycursing in front of the children but it wasn't funny especially whenthe one older child didn't seem to respond to the words like a normalchild would and neither did the parents. The male and female characters were flat stereotypes as if an immaturefrat-boy wrote them. The men were tough 'take-no-crap' men and thewomen were aggressive, pretty, and hardly reacted to the men beingbutt-heads. I was so disappointed that Leslie Mann and Olivia Wildewould demean themselves in this farce. My jaw dropped during the date scene between Ryan Reynolds and OliviaWilde when his character asked her why she showed up and she said sheshowed up to keep her job???!!! Really? In 2011? I'm sorry I justdidn't buy the premise. Wilde is not a bimbo and only a bimbo wouldstill keep a date rather than going to HR to complain about her boss. This isn't the 1980's.These kind of 'B' movies would usually have a couple of hotup-and-coming starlets in those roles. I expected better from Mann andWilde. Although I will say Leslie Mann did have a couple of decentscenes particularly the one where she is telling her whole life storyto the babysitter - that was funny. The movie does try to redeem itself in the second half but by then Istopped caring and I'm sure the frat-boy audience did too. What I liked about "Wedding Crashers" and "The Hangover" that ismissing from this film is more heart. Sure I can just sit back and notfocus on the issues but this film wasted my time and the CGI nuditytook away the only real reason to waste my $10. |

Could've changed more than just the character's personalitiesThe Change-Up bathes in a whole new tub or immaturity and low-browjokes. Just when you thought The Hangover Part II was the raunchiestpiece of film in 2011, casually, but awkwardly walks in this boasting atiresome eighties formula and off color jokes that twenty years agowould've got you labeled a "no-class" citizen.Despite being stamped with an R rating, it seems the humor was targetedtoward juvenile twelve year olds who laugh at excessive uses of fourletter words and sex references. Boy, this film comes with its share ofgratuitous nudity and sexual content. So bad that I'm sure the MPAA wasshaking their head when writing down everything this included. I am noprude. I have no problem with language, sex, drugs, or anything. Justas long as it's funny, it has a purpose, and it isn't every tenseconds. The Change-Up doesn't seem to get the fact that swear-humorwares thin. The eighties did away with body-and-mind-swap films, and I think TheChange-Up wants to be either nostalgic or clever at resurrecting atired concept. One body swapping movie I liked to a very stern extentwas Dream a Little Dream. It was a true eighties film, but neglected tomention on the back cover and in the trailer it was a convolutedreality-bent film. That's an inexcusable movie on the film's part. Atleast this tells us what it is blatantly. We meet Mitch (Reynolds) and Dave (Bateman) two best-friends driftingapart because of life's duties. Right off the bat, from that sentence, could've spawned a much smarter and much more interesting film.Lifelong buddies going their separate ways, struggling to hold on, yetconstantly fighting, maybe ending in a decent twist. But I don't knowif that would be the place to squeeze in so many crude jokes.Anyway, Mitch is a free-spirit man-child who loves to have random sexwith a pregnant woman, and Dave has a wife (Mann) and three children. One real girl, and two CGI-ed infants to be exact. One day, theyurinate in a fountain and wish they had each other's lives. Boom. Wishcomes true and now Mitch is Dave, and Dave is Mitch. They must get used to being in each other's bodies, but then again, both are just as crude and low as the other, the only difference is oneactually cares about his family and the only person the other caresabout is his pregnant sex-buddy.The problem with The Change-Up is not only that is resurrects a subjectthat should've remained dead, but the fact that it feels it's "on aroll" with its sick humor and deliberately childish antics. We getbabies doing their business on Bateman's face, awkward love scenes thatcould very well tie Bad Teacher for worst sex scene of the year, and wealso get enough language to sustain a George Carlin comedy special. This isn't a disaster, but it in no means shines past its roots. Theonly likable character is Dave's wife played by Leslie Mann who Iadored in Funny People. I keep hoping she goes down the path of AmyAdams, and gets herself an Oscar in a future drama role, but TheChange-Up certainly couldn't have helped manors.I've said before 2011 is the year of the women with comedies like BadTeacher, Bridesmaids, and Hall Pass showing that women can be just asfunny as men. This film only proves my point that when you have asupporting actress better than the two comedy, typecast leads youshould make a film on her rather than them.Starring: Jason Bateman, Ryan Reynolds, and Leslie Mann. Directed by:David Dobkin. |

Waste of $10Wow I really don't know how people found this funny. Don't get mewrong, I like stupid humor as much as the next person (Zombieland,Superbad, and The Benchwarmers are all favorites of mine) but this wasjust disgusting and really not funny at all. First off, I don't want tosee a baby's asshole especially when there's sh*t flying from it.Gross. Second, I wouldn't have minded the nudity AS much except for thefact that not once, that's right not even ONCE, did Ryan Reynoldsappear shirtless in this movie. I mean of course it's only the womenthat get naked in front of the camera, that's what makes a successfulmovie today I guess. And I know I'm going to sound like a prude when Isay this, but when Mich makes a comment about the baby looking "downsy"and "retarded" I thought it was a little over the top. I really didn'teven see how it was funny. Anyways if you really want to see this, justwait until it comes out because it's a big waste of $10 in my opinion.Oh and when the porn scene comes up just remember that I warned youabout this movie... |

FunnyThis Movie is hilarious even though this same concept has been donebefore with Freaky Friday. But with a difference it's with two guys onebeing a bachelor and the other a married man. they both are thrown intoworlds that they are not familiar with switching lives. from the veryfirst scene you are able to tell what kind of movie it is with itscrude humor they are forced to fight through the others lives untilthey are able to figure out how to switch back to their regular selves.this is a funny movie with a great comedic duo with Ryan Reynolds andJason Bateman. also an appearance from Leslie Mann and Olivia Wilde togive this movie a little sexiness. overall this movie is a great movieand will have you laughing for days. |

GoneWithTheTwins (2012-04-25 00:51:27) |
It's divertingly vulgar but doesn't have enough substance to entertain beyond a single viewing. The Change-Up jumps right into bizarre, foul humor to lure audiences inwith pure shock. CG babies are employed for uncomfortable laughs, especially as one unloads his bowels into the mouth of an unsuspectingfather or rapidly beats his head against the bars of a crib likesomething out of The Exorcist. Bathroom jokes are taken to the extreme, hoping that raunchiness will smoothly replace cleverness. So too iscomedy involving children, which practically borders on child abuse(such as teaching jailyard justice to a little girl and allowing babiesto toss around butcher knives or climb into blenders). The trick is alltoo apparent. But with a plot resembling Freaky Friday for adults, theR-rated laughs are necessary for uniqueness – clearly, the story barelypossesses any.In Atlanta, Mitch Planko (Ryan Reynolds) is something of a failure, having never grown up, living as a high-school dropout in ateen-oriented bachelor pad, fighting bums for furniture, wieldingsamurai swords for fun, smoking weed, and spouting vulgarities. He's aman-child, disrespects his father (Alan Arkin), works as an actor in"lornos" (light pornography), and has a penchant for deviant sex. Hisbest friend Dave Lockwood (Jason Bateman) lives on the opposite end ofthe spectrum. He prioritizes his work at a law firm, hoping to makepartner, and never has time for himself. Between his twin babies, youngdaughter Cara (Sydney Rouviere), and loving wife Jamie (Leslie Mann),he can't find time to just talk with his family. When Mitch and Dave catch a baseball game, the two chat over their envyof each other's lives, which leads to a drunken urination into amagical fountain. The next morning, the impossible happens – Mitch isin Dave's body and Dave is in Mitch's body. Thinking the solution is torecreate the previous night's inebriated mishaps (like Big), theyjourney back to the fountain, only to discover that it has been movedand that it may take a week or more to learn of its new whereabouts. Atfirst they panic, but then Mitch convinces Dave that they can assumetheir new roles while waiting – after all, Mitch is somewhat of anactor. What could possibly go wrong? The setup is uninspired, but stilla decent method for creating hilarious situations with disastrousconsequences. Fortunately, it never gets so serious that it can'treturn to its comedic roots, although the switched identities shtick iscarried a bit beyond the logical turning point, making the resolutionunrealistic (and tidy) even within the boundaries of pure fantasy. Rolereversals aren't new, but Jason Bateman pretending to be sexuallyuninhibited, preposterously wild and unspeakably crude is a delight towatch, similar to his costar Jennifer Aniston's part in HorribleBosses. He's cast in his usual role, but then assigned to take it inthe opposite direction. This ungentle contrast works well for Bateman, whereas Reynolds simply returns to his Van Wilder days. Coming fromGreen Lantern, it's obvious he's more cut out for coarse comedy thansuperhero tights.Responsibility, family and a career must battle freedom andrecklessness in a classic switcheroo scenario with a twist of nudityand crudity. Mitch learns to be a go-getter and to stop quitting(accomplishment issues are at a high), while Dave gets to take a breakand date smoking hot associate Sabrina McArdle (Olivia Wilde), which issomehow classified as innocent flirtation. He essentially gets avacation. Disquieting secrets are revealed and kinky sexuality explored– it's divertingly vulgar but doesn't have enough substance toentertain beyond a single viewing.- The Massie Twins (GoneWithTheTwins.com) |

No point in humour if it's bad humourThis is quite an edgy film, and all the "adult" humour went overboardat times. There is no point in any kind of humour if it's bad humour.Scriptwriters need to know there is a limit, therefore I won't blameany other part of the cast for now.Whatever their reasons were for accepting those roles, in an overusedconcept, the stars pulled it off well enough. Acting was not bad, butit didn't seem like a challenge either.I take it, it isn't a film for kids, but an adult cannot always keep upwith this much stupidity... It had its funny parts, but I personallyleft the cinema annoyed. I heard most people calling it "average" whilethinking to myself the reasons why... So first of all, why would I wantto see this kind of concept AGAIN, and pay for it, when it was nothingspecial or innovative? Why so much nudity - why is it a TOTAL boobshow? Why is it telling us that all men want -even the most seriousmen- is sex and money? Someone amongst the writers probably has issueswith women. So conclusion: Badly written, with little aesthetic value, too vulgar, too unbalanced, too shallow, too much plastic surgery... I give it a 5because we did laugh... but I wouldn't watch it again. |

A hard-R rating because of language and nudity, but still rather funny most times.I don't particularly like movies that use pervasive filthy languagebecause I find most of them juvenile and just dirty for the sake ofbeing dirty. Some viewers might find "The Change-Up" to be this way,but I didn't. I found that the language and nudity generally fit thecharacters and helped move the story forward, because of the differentnatures of the two men who switch lives in this story.Having said that, we were very glad that we were not watching it withour children, or even other adults, because much of the humor getspersonal.Ryan Reynolds is a smart slacker, who we find out through his fatherand friends "never follows through, never finishes anything." He livesalone and does very little except romance women while waiting for anacting job. He is Mitch Planko. His very best friend since they were small is Jason Bateman as DaveLockwood. Dave is sort of the opposite. He was class valedictorian, went to a great university, went to a great law school, clerked for aUS Supreme Court justice, and now after 9 years as a brilliant lawyerwith a big Atlanta firm is in line to be voted as a partner. He ishappily married and the father of three.(As an aside when I see relationships like this in fictional movies Iwonder if I could do that, stay friends with a slacker who has a habitof using the wrong language in public and generally screws things up. Idon't think I could. I believe we gravitate towards those who sharesimilar outlooks. Anyway...)So one night out after some drinking the two buddies decide to take aleak in a fountain on public land and, as they say in unison that theywished they had each-others' lives, the lights dim everywhere (tosignify something magical is happening) and the next morning they wakeup "different." Mitch is in Dave's body, in bed with Dave's wife, whothinks he is still the Dave she is married to. This creates animmediate funny moment as he sees her breast-feeding one of the youngtwins.Meanwhile Dave wakes up in Mitch's body and realizes that Mitch (inDave's body) has to go to an important meeting months in preparationfor a merger that is critical to his company. All he can do it tellMitch not to screw things up and that creates additional funny moments.Naturally the two eventually find a way to switch back, but only afterlots of anxiety finding the fountain that had been moved the day aftertheir incident. That it ends up relocated to a central area inside ashopping mall just multiplies the comic opportunities. No, this is not a great movie, but I found it more funny and moreenjoyable than most of the recent years "adult" hard-R rated comedies.I suppose much of that is due to the actors, Bateman and Reynolds, andtheir supporting cast members. And, there is a message embedded underthe several feet of sludge, about finding our own personal versions ofhappiness while learning that the grass isn't necessarily greener inthe lives of others. As always Leslie Mann is super, here she is Dave's wife, JamieLockwood. The "wilde card" for me is Olivia Wilde, a really gorgeousactress playing Sabrina McArdle, a junior lawyer working for Dave. Sheends up becoming the love interest of Mitch's after he accepts hisslacker attitude and begins to turn over new leaves in his life.Always dependable Alan Arkin is Mitch's Dad . |

Nothing extraordinary, it can be quite stupid and boringLet me start by saying that i didn't hate the film, but i'm gettingtired of this type of movie, it's not worth watching but you may laughonce in a while, but its not a laugh out loud comedy and it does nothave any brilliant joke, its not a complete waste of time but thatdepends on what kinds of movies you watch, if you came from MontyPython, Dr. strange-love, you might be disappointed. its Something thatis done every year, it is full of boobs and baby crapping on daddy typeof comedy. I'll rated 3 out 10. If you want and easy and light comedy,go ahead, but if you want a new concept, great characters, and gooddialogues don't waste you'r time. Old concept 6, cliché characters 5,dialogue 4, cliché jokes 3. i guess it is 3/10 |

Overworked, but Always Funny StorylineIn Atlanta, Dave Lockwood (Jason Bateman) is an efficient and dedicatedlawyer that expects to be promoted to partner of the law firm where hehas been working for ten years after a merging operation and a familyman, married with the gorgeous Jamie Lockwood (Leslie Mann) and fatherof three children. His best friend is the aspirant actor Mitch Planko(Ryan Reynolds), who is single, reckless and unemployed, and a quitterthat never concludes what he is doing. One night, Dave and Mitch drink a lot and they go to a fountain to peeand they both simultaneously wish to have the life of the other. On thenext morning, they wake up and discover that they had switched bodies. They return to the square and find that the fountain has moved to anunknown place. Therefore, Mitch needs to become responsible to save thejob and the promotion of his friend, while Dave feels how complicatedis for him to date with his sexy and gorgeous colleague Sabrina McArdle(Olivia Wilde). Sooner they learn more about themselves and also thatthe life of the other is not as good and they believe it could be."The Change-Up" is an entertaining film with an overworked, but alwaysfunny storyline. I do not recall how many comedies I have seen with twopersons switching bodies, but I always laugh a lot. "The Change-up" isno exception, especially with the hilarious Ryan Reynolds, JasonBateman and Leslie Mann and the gorgeous Olivia Wilde, one of the mostbeautiful actresses that I have recently seen. There are particularly two (gross) scenes that I repeated many timessince I could not stop laughing: when Dave is cleaning his baby andtrying to reach the diaper and when Mitch is in Dave's body and seesthe half-naked Jamie going to the bathroom. My vote is seven.Title (Brazil): "Eu Queria Ter a Sua Vida" ("I Wish I Had Your Life") |

Cliché cliché clichéWe've all seen it. Hollywood frequently come back to the paradigm ofchanging bodies(or places). Background changed up a little bit in Thechange up but its still a cliché. Humour is very low and first fewseconds of the movie explains it very vividly but if you ll manage tolook pass it ll get better. I personally liked scenes with Olivia Wildshe has really strong screen presence (or maybe its just because she sodamn HOT). Anyway there will be few laughs and few WTF. Although filmis predictable and starts off awfully I must say its one of few that Iliked among 'OMG we changed our bodies' clichés.The story is about 2best friends Dave Lockwood(Jason Bateman) and MitchPlanko (Ryan Reynolds) which after drunken night change up theirbodies. That of course lead to awkward situations, gags andrediscovering your own I. Dave is a lawyer with 3 kids and lovingwife.Mitch is completely different person without career, living like amen-child and chasing skirt all the time (he also had daddy issues).Jason Bateman as an actor (and probably as a person) completely lackscharisma so he s tailor made for role of Dave. (btw he always play thesame guy). The thing is that after the "change" it just doesn't workany more. As douche he cant convey anything beside few facialexpressions. Same goes for Reynolds although he doesn't act he justlooks pretty. But who da hell cares about acting while watching lightand for most parts brain-dead comedy.I recommend it to all those who have not much experience with cinema. If want to have some fun and leave cinema rather with a smile thenwithout this is for you. For the rest of us it will work only whenwe're sad at the moment with out anything better to do. Oh and whatsimportant we get to see Olivia almost naked +1 for da movie thanks toher :P |

When the frowned on catches some smilesOn a drunken night two polar opposite buds--after saying they want eachothers' lives--switch bodies but not minds when accidentally swearingan oath in front of a statue while crossing urine streams into itsfountain. Mitch (Ryan Reynolds) lives the complete bachelor life withno responsibilities beyond making a paycheck as a part time actor, andDave (Jason Bateman) has his hands full as a lawyer with three kids anda wife. The fountain is moved and in the meantime they have to live oneanothers' lives till it can be found. Easy said, easy done. Yeah, right. The premise sounds awfully familiar, though this is a movie that skipsout on the cleverness and goes more towards the profane by playing ontaboos and shock value for a share of the way. Some of the jokes feellike they are too in your face to the point of stepping over theirpunch and the replay value is somewhat diminished in that they can onlybe looked at head-on and from a point-blank angle. Though one thing youcan count on is it literally doesn't let up with what it shows or says, with kids included, which makes the experience extremely over-the-topin a titillating, one-off kind of way. Babies are more misused thanfemales born in China, and then adults don't hold back in what they saywith yougins in presence, cursing and urination included. Thatunabashed outlook is gonna cause a share of gasping and head-shakes,not to mention I-can't-believe-they-did-that laughter all at the sametime. It's a movie that you gotta forget all social stigmas and justlet loose to the ludicrousness, otherwise this is gonna be a toughwatch and not recommended. The main culprit is the Mitch role, and thenthe raunchiness is continued when that persona has to be maintainedwhen Bateman switches to Reynolds. He tries to keep up with thebachelor's extracurricular activities, including meeting his sex-crazedpartners and showing up to the set of his "acting" job, which turns outto be something a little more risqué than the reserved dad andbusinessman agreed to.The whole ride isn't a roller coaster of do-whatever-it-wants as iteventually turns into a safer formula that takes a lighter stroll forthe latter portion where there is room for character learning andgrowth and things are more content. The original Dave character wantsto make partner in the law firm he's worked so hard to get to, but atthe same time doesn't have time for his wife. Jamie (Leslie Mann) hassome funny and also serious scenes from uncertainty setting in with her"new" husband but that's not to say there weren't issues beforehand. The original Mitch character is always running away from finishinganything that he starts and uses the opportunity to hopefully rectifyhimself if that's even possible. Olivia Wilde shows with interest onboth fronts as Sabrina: a pretty face that works in the law firm. Davewanted her before the switch, and Mitch being Dave, being his sneakyperverted self, says they should go out and she turns out to be muchdifferent than the conservative lady she appears in the office."The Change-Up" plays on the absurd while others around them play itstraight and act confused. Reynolds and Bateman definitely have theirmoments but don't always transition their reverse rolls back and forthsmoothly as it feels like they can't always shake their stage names. This plays out the fantasy of how it would be if you did thingsdifferently in your earlier years and shows that it might not be toolate to do so from a changed perspective. Yeah, the message wasdelivered a little fluffy and easily but, then again, this is simpleentertainment that uses taboos to get its audience loosened up from theday-to-day of rules and what we're supposed to do. The movie rides afine line between potentially getting someone on the completedefensive, or on the other side letting loose and going with the insaneflow. It can be nice to see them--not yourself, mind you--break therules for basic escapism even if that diversion wasn't without itsover-daring snags that make it more closer to a minor comedy than aninstant classic. |
