Story Line

Plot Summary:

Simba and Nala have a daughter, Kiara. Timon and Pumbaa are assigned to be her babysitters, but she easily escapes their care and ventures into the forbidden lands. There she meets a lion cub named Kovu and they become friends. What she and her parents do not know is that Kovu is the son of Zira - a banished follower of the now-dead Scar. She plans to raise Kovu to overthrow Simba and become the king of the Pride Lands. This tests not only Kiara and Kovus relationship as they mature, but Simbas relationship with his daughter.

me and my friends love this movie!

as the title of my review might suggest, my friends and I all love this movie. On our friday nights, we all sit on the floor of my friend's living room and watch this movie while we sing along. My favorite characters are Kiara and Nuka...lolMy friends and I are all 15 and still are obsessed with it.

A worthy successor...

I wanted to see this for ages but was put off by the fact that it wentstraight to video. Then I noticed that all Disney sequels (bar RescuersDownUnder) went straight to video, so I bought it. From the opening song thisfilm captures the spirit of the original. The first time I saw it Ithoughtonly two of the songs were good (Upendi and One of Us) but after seeing itafew times I realised that the songs are extremely well written and catchy.Ifeel there are a few points not accounted for in the film notably theoriginof the Outland lions (I can only conclude that only a few followed Scarandothers joined them in the time period between Kiara as a cub and as anadult) but I prefer these things left to the imagination. Overall I amveryimpressed by this film. It has very high quality animation for a straighttovideo sequel and introduces some interesting new characters. I wouldreallylike the Lion King to be a trilogy (I am a great fan of trilogies) so comeon, Disney, Make a third film, preferably detailing the young Scar andMufasa. A definite 5-stars.

OK for a straight-to-video movie

Most direct-to-video animated movies are pretty bad, but this movie ispretty good! The songs were pretty good, but I gotta admit that Upendi ISpretty bad. And I hate One Of Us, too! Whoever thought that would be agoodsong?! Love Will Find A Wayand We Are One are the best ones. (My Lullaby sucks, too.) Kiara and Kovuare about the only good characters in it. Zira, Nuka and Vitani wereenoughto make me laugh! THESE are the villains? HA! The only one that I reallyliked at all was Vitani, because at the end she'd learned from hermistakesand was willing to make peace. But Zira? No! She was too caught up inherself to learn from her mistakes! Well, I guess you see my point. All inall, an OK movie except for those things. Thanks for reading.

This was a fairly impressive attempt by Disney

The story was fun and playful, and with these qualities were interesting themes --- the appreciation of effort (Nuka's death and Zeera's reaction); the glorification of reconciliation, forgiveness, and unity; the profound portrayal of true justice; and the use of obvious, but fitting, symbolism. The downside of this movie was that it was a disappointment to the original, whose musical score and characterization transcended those of the sequel. True, rarely do sequels measure up, but the songs and characterization were not too impressive. I enjoyed watching Simba grow up more than I did Kovu or Kiara. I enjoyed Zazu's humor more the first time. I also think Timone and Pumbaa weren't as funny. The introduction of new characters neither enhanced nor downgraded the quality of the plot. I think Rafiki deserved more attention too, though In Upendi was fantastic. Its weaknesses taken into account, I still recommend this film to anyone. Disney's "magical charm" still persists.

Very good, for a movie released on video.

The animation is not quite up to the standards of the first movie, probably because they didn't study lions while drawing it but had to settle for housecats. This doesn't really hurt the movie though. There are a LOT of shots/scenes and a few lines of dialogue that are VERY reminiscent of things from the first movie, though I won't go into detail for fear of giving away part of the plotline. But there are tons of them. I personally think the music in the first one was more impressive. If you really liked Timon and Pumbaa in the first movie, you will probably like them here. The heart shapes in the song about Upendi I thought were rather unnatural; they clash with the rest of everything because they look artificial, kind of like neon lighting, which is not something one generally finds in this type of setting. All the Outlanders somehow look like Scar, being built the same way, with the same shape head and all, which is suspicious--you can tell the good guys from the bad guys by physical traits?--but could be explained by their being a family group; maybe Scar had lots of sisters and cousins--and the way it ends, it doesn't matter, the message in the end is positive. I hear that Nuka, the scraggly one, has the voice of Andy Dick, who was also the EMH-Mark 2 in Star Trek: Voyager. Cool!

Not as good as the first, but deserves better

I remember seeing this movie at a young age and was greatly impressedby it! After watching the first Lion King, I could't wait for thisfilm. Now after hearing all the negativity on this movie I wasconfused, I mean of course it wasn't near as good as the first film butmost sequels can't surpass there original because they already used allthe good ideas in the first film. In my mind this film should havereceived better responses, the story was good, the characters were fun, they added different songs, sure there were silly moments but that'swhat makes the film good. And there was more of a love story then thefirst one but I enjoyed it. All in all I'd just like to say this filmwasn't as good as the first "The Lion King" but it still deservedbetter. I give it a 7.5 out of 10

Not very good

I remember being very exited when this first came up, but I was letdown. We are supposed to become gullible and believe that there is awhole nother pride of lionesses and lions that are heirs of Scar thatwere not in the first movie. Nor were they hinted to exist in the firstmovie. The plot is basically Romeo and Juliet instead of Hamlet (thefirst movie). This movie is now coming out as a Special Edition, butwhy? It's not a very good movie. The characters aren't like themselvesand do thiings they would never do in the first movie. The hues of thefur are way off, and the art cheap and shoddy. I don't recommend thismovie if you loved the first one, because you'll be very disappointed!

This review is from: The Lion King II: Simba's Pride [VHS] (VHS Tape) This product was garbled in the beginning and in the end, I wouldn't call it good condition, I would have called it fair.

Very touching and funny Disney sequel about a special friendship for all ages that will warm your heart

THE LION KING II: SIMBA'S PRIDE, in my opinion, is a very touching andfunny Disney sequel about a special friendship for all ages that willwarm your heart. I really loved the music. I really didn't like Kiara's(voice of Neve Campbell) attitude toward Simba (voice of MatthewBroderick) for the most part. All in all, the music was good, theanimation was perfect, everyone was cast perfectly, and the directionwas flawless. In conclusion, I highly recommend this very touching andfunny Disney sequel about a special friendship for all ages to anyonewho hasn't seen it. You're in for a real treat and a good time, so goto the video store, rent it or buy it, kick back with someone close toyou, and watch it. I guarantee you you'll thoroughly enjoy it.

Good, but could be better

Overall the film flowed well, but unfortunately, like many sequels, it doesn't live up to the original. Buy it from duty free - it's only £11.90 and it's worth it. I don't think it's worth £15.00 however.

Simba's pride became mine...

It's not a surprise that Disney made a sequel to it's most successfulmovie of all times and at least they waited four years after the firstfilms release. But why had this sequel to be directly tovideo-production?"Lion King II: Simba's Pride" isn't bad, but not great either. Orsaying, I liked this movie more first time I saw it, but notthereafter. Of course you can't always expect a sequel to surpassingthe first film and I'm not disappointed over "Simba's Pride". But thismovie has some flaws.SPOILER: The script is very thin, even the plot had potential. Timonand Pumbaa were great characters in the first movie, but now they'repretty annoying. I also miss more of Zazu in this film. While Zira is a interesting villain, cause she wants to get revenge ofSimba because of reasons that makes sense, if you comparing her toother Disney villains and although she's evil, you actually feel sorryfor her at last (I did). And why did the script-writers add unnecessarycharacters like Zira's other kids, Nuka and Vitani, who has nothing todo with the story? SPOILERS OVEROK, enough complaining. This movie has some enjoyable scenes and thesongs works, even they're not like the songs of the first movie (andthe song "Love Will Find a Way" is full of cliché's). The score is goodtoo. SPOILER: This movie has many cliché's and it contains references to"Pocahontas" (love between different races). Even "Simba's Pride" hassome highlights, watch rather "Lion King 1/2" - a much more funniermovie.

they don't know how to color in Australia

My apologies for such a racist remark but this would be true back in1998. The character animation was sloppy despite giving the sequel ahigh class glaze. the colors of the African savannah are dull and darknot as bright and bold as the original. And how big do those dark marksabove the lions' noses have to be? According to these people, reallybig...really big to the point that it gets pretty annoying. As for myother animation quirks, Simba's mane lacked detail, Nala's eyes are nowblue instead of green and poor Timon is very very dark (someone's beenout in the African sun to long!) How do I know this? I'm that big a Lion King fan folks! And now...Well, it seems that the people who made this movie think that we'restupid but we're not. We know that Simba and Nala had a son at the endof the original not a daughter. The cub is mentioned as a he in theread along and if you own the "Six New Adventures" book series you knowthat the cub grows up to be a Simba look alike named Kopa.Oh well cant blame people I guess for starting one of what would bemany of "son/daughter of Disney films". It's a good thing Lion King IIwas one of the early sequels or otherwise I wouldve been disgusted withthe plot. Kiara is Simba's opposite while Simba becomes over protected."And stay away from the Outlands," he says. Huh? If the outlands ouroutside of the Pridelands and if Kiara isn't allowed to go past thePridelands what's the point? You know that half of the rules that Simbamakes for Kiara contradict the other half (especially in restriction towhere she can go) So confusing. But what I like about Lion King II isthat it is actually one of the darker sequels despite all of theconfusion of the story.Believe me folks, I hear children asking "Why didn't they just makeKovu Scar's son. it would make much more sense." Unbelievable but true.Kids actually think regardless of the lions being blood related thatKovu being Scar's son would've made much more sense. I don't think Nukawas necessary, so now we got "Well he's older so why isn't he beingprepped up to be king?"There were other unnecessary things as well (since when did beingexiled become a ceremonial thing?). Also I know how big and popular acharacter Mufasa is but his fan in the sun, messed up! And the winddeally was a Pocahontas copy off. The songs were good (better than the other pop crap in other Disneysequels) but they really needed a bit of what I call the musical 4touch. the musical 4 consists of Elton John, Tim Rice, Hans Zimmer, andLebo M. and no "He Lives in You" does not count because it's obviousthat it was taken off from the Rythm of the Pridelands album to savemoney. A better opening song wouldve been good. I wonder if "WaltDisney Home Video presents" will be on the Special Edition DVD in thefall. Unlike most of you, I did like "Upendi", the music wouldve beeneven cooler if Lebo M really was connected to the full project (did thedirectors even bother to consider him?)Last cuz I know I'm making this long. We have the original characters.the ones being pushed out of the spotlight for a new generation. Thisis the sad part. Without Rowan Atkinson, Zazu's character was patheticto the point where they could've just wiped him out without explanation(like Sarabi) to save time and money) and of course we have the Simbaissue. Very overprotective of Kiara to the point where he had gottenmean and annoying. Are we talking about the same Simba the big hero ofthe Lion King? Sadly yes. And there are reviewers defending his casesaying that "well considering what Simba went through, i understand whyhe was so protective of Kiara". I agree but that needed to show in themovie! The "nightmare" scene only showed his fear of Kovu but notexplaining why Simba was scarred with the overprotectivism of hisdaughter. Simba was not an important character as I hoped for him tobe, after all it is called "Simba's Pride" so we needed to see moreSimba.I don't think these script writers/directors/animators are not big fansof the Lion King. Otherwise the sequel wouldve been much better butthis is still cream of the crop in the video sequel frenzy. An absolutetreat for real hardcore Lion King fans.
