Jim Carrey at his best.never thought it could happen. Jim Carrey (star of Ace Ventura: PetDetective) upstaged -- and not once, but twice! While it's true thatThe Mask is another vehicle for the rubber-featured modern-dayamalgamation of Jerry Lewis and the Three Stooges, this time aroundCarrey has some competition, and there are a number of scenes where heends up playing second fiddle. The special effects are, for the most part, rather impressive, butthey're as frequently guilty of overwhelming the star's performance ascomplimenting it. Nevertheless, if you think Carrey has an expressiveface, wait 'til you see him with the mask on. Eyes pop out and jawsdrop -- literally. ILM goes to work with their own version oflive-action animation whenever anyone dons the mask. Good costumes andmake-up serve only to enhance the computer-generated visuals. And, even as the audience's attention is arrested by the work of theeffects wizards, there's still room for a canine scene-stealer. Milo(whose real name is Max) is the perfect foil for Carrey's goofiness and-- yes -- there are occasions where his animal antics divert thespotlight away from his two-legged co-star.Carrey, meanwhile, is playing a split role: mild-mannered StanleyIpkiss and his superhuman alter-ego, the Mask. Stanley is a shy, unassuming man who works in a bank and lives with Milo in a smallapartment. One day, following a terrible bout with Murphy's Law,Stanley finds a curious-looking mask floating amidst some debris in ariver. Later, at home, when he finally gets around to trying the maskon, Stanley learns that this isn't some archaeological curiosity. Ithas power - the power to transform. From the moment the mask clings tohis skin and his face turns green, Stanley's personality undergoes aradical shift. Insecurity is replaced by flamboyance. Physically, thereseems to be little that he can't do, from twisting his body into apretzel to taking a bullet in the chest or forming a tommy gun out of aballoon. While wearing the mask, Stanley makes a comment about becoming asuperhero, but he's really interested in one thing: Tina Carlyle(Cameron Diaz), a voluptuous nightclub singer who works for a localgangster (Peter Greene). Following a bank robbery (to finance hiswooing), the Mask discovers that a cop, Lt. Mitch Kellaway (PeterRiegert), is hot on his trail. And it's not that difficult a trail tofollow. After all, how many lime-faced bandits are there who move likethe Warner Brothers cartoon Tasmanian Devil? Carrey plays Stanley withsurprising restraint, giving his zaniness free reign only when the maskis on. In some ways, it's a Clark Kent/Superman thing. Stanley and theMask might share the same body, but they're very different. One is atypical nice guy who finishes last. The other is Robin Williams' geniefrom Aladdin come to life (Carrey provides dozens of whirlwindimpersonations). As a comedy, The Mask is genial, but its recycled plot is far too thinfor the film to succeed as either an adventure or a spoof. "Comic book"and "cartoon" are two terms that come to mind for describing thismovie. Neither is intended to be pejorative, but each conjures certainapt images.Carrey is only in The Mask for 25-30 mins. I wanted to see more. Butit's good to see his serious stuff as well. For me, Ace Ventura was too much concentrated Jim Carrey. In The Mask, the forceful personality is diluted. The star is mostly-subdued exceptduring those off-the-wall bursts of energy that accompany theappearance of the Mask. The film is entertaining enough -- in a light, undemanding sort of way -- but more than the combined efforts ofCarrey, ILM, and Max are demanded to camouflage the seams and holesstill apparent in this production. No one else could have played thepart better. |

Charlie's VisionThis review is from: The Mask (New Line Platinum Series) (DVD) Watching this movie with the director's comments you learn that the operating budget for the film was 18 million dollars. Also the studio almost cut the 'Cuban Pete' scene until early screenings revealed it to be the most popular scene in the movie. Jim Carrey is actually singing however Cameron Diaz, who performs earlier is not. Charlie Russel does not say Cameron Diaz isn't singing but his silence during her performance spoke volumes to me. 18 million is an incredible figure because that amount of money would currently be required to get Carrey or Diaz in any movie that wasn't pure voice over work. The Mask is entirely Charles Russel's vision minus 2 deleted scenes. The scene where Peggy is brutally slain was rightfully deleted. The scene where Leif Erickson discovers America by accident as a byproduct of the cursed masks' disposal could have stayed in but would have begged a revisitation of sorts so was cut for brevity and cohesion. Carrey is sympathetic as Ipcus and hilarious as the Mask. The talented supporting cast misses no notes. Cameron Diaz has never been more alluring on camera. Many successful movies have employed surreal period themes. The Mask uses a circa 1940's theme to good effect. This movie was under rated in it's day but has stood the test of time and still represents Carrey's most cohesive and compelling comedy performance. The movie is also a lesson to studios that over meddle in decisions that are creative. As a result 'The Mask' is a much better movie than 'Bruce Almighty' even tho the budgets for the two films were 40 million dollars apart. |

A Jim Carrey Classic.Stanley Ipkiss, a bank clerk, is a poor misunderstood average goof, that is, until he finds an ancient mask that when worn, turns an average guy like Stanley into a powerhouse of energy and animal magnetism. This also gets him into trouble as well. You will also delight in the screen stealing dog named Milo, a Jack Russel Terrier with seemingly more brains than his owner Stanley. This movie is very well done and gives Carrey the chance to do what he does best, and that's make people laugh. The visual effects are outstanding to say the least. Quite possibly the best movie of its year. Worth a watch anytime with all family members. Destined to be a classic! |

The movie that put Carrey and Diaz on everyone's radar.Who but Jim Carrey could play meek bank clerk Stanley Ipkiss, who onefateful day comes across an ancient mask. On a whim he puts it to hisface, and the mask becomes part of him, altering both his physicalappearance and his personality. He becomes a super dynamo, in strengthand quickness, but also with a destructive streak. His challenge is tochannel his energy into fighting the criminals.Way down the list of credits is Cameron Diaz as Tina Carlyle.Essentially an unknown before this movie, she plays what eventuallybecomes Ipkiss' love interest, and her performance here is largelyresponsible for the even better roles she soon was to have. The movie is not to be taken seriously, it is most fun to watch for theeye-popping special effects associated with turning Ipkiss, and attimes others, even his dog, into something completely different whenthe mask goes on. Always a fun watch. |

Carrey. Diaz. PerfectI am quite a big fan of Jim Carrey's work, as he has the ability to put on asmile on my face at the saddest of times. And The Mask shows Jim at his verybest.Carrey (Man On The Moon, Ace Ventura, Liar Liar), plays Stanley Ipkiss, acomplete loser in life who works at a bank. But one night, he finds a maskthat beholds great powers that can act out your deepestinsecurities.Enter Tina Carlyle (Cameron Diaz from There's Something About Mary, My BestFriend's Wedding, and more recently, Charlie's Angels), a singer for theCoco Bongo - a new hip club downtown, who's control-freak boyf is intorobbing banks etc. However, Tina starts to fall for Stanley and his wild counterpart The Mask.Next we have annoying reporter, Peggy Brandt, played by Amy Yasbeck (ProblemChild, Problem Child 2, Splash Too). Peggy is determined to get the scoop onthe town's biggest mystery - The Mask.Jim and Cameron, are obviously the stars of the show, but Amy's portrayal ofPeggy is pretty damn good, too! Another note-worthy actor is Max, who playsStanley's dog, Milo.Fast-packed from start to finish, this cartoonish comedy will leave you institches, and doin' the conga! 8/10! |

This movie is a scream!!!If you ask me, 'The Mask' is Jim Carrey's best work ever. It's his bestmovie and the only one of him I find really great. It's not a moviewithout its faults, but it's original, imaginative, creative and hasvery good comical gags. It's a classic. Or, to use only one word todescribe it: "Smokin!"Jim Carrey can be two things: either a really funny comedian either acomedian who does his job well but overacts, although no one can denythat there is a genius inside this man. In 'The Mask' he is awesome. Iconsider this one of his best actings of all time, if not his verybest. In 'The Mask' Jim Carrey portrays Stanley Ipkiss, a clerk in a niceEdge City bank. He is a very nice and easy-going guy with great senseof humor (which matches his funny name). He is «the nicest guy», yetshy and somewhat depressed and he does not have much success in his joband personal life. He doesn't have much friends, except for hisco-worker Charlie and his loyal dog Milo (a Jack Russell Terrier).Stanley likes to watch cartoons (particularly a Tex Avery one with awhistling wolf), decorates his apartment with items from these cartoonsand he has the most unusual pajama :)Jim Carrey also portrays the title character (The Mask), which is theother side of Stanley Ipkiss... or at least what he wants to be butcan't be without the mask. The mask gives him superpowers and courageto do things he wouldn't be able to do without it. For example, he candance like Fred Astaire, Gumby and Barishnikov (all together) - and hecan flirt with the gorgeous Tina Carlyle. The Mask is a cartoonishfigure that can do incredible things. This film is a crazy comedy, a film that surpasses the limits ofimagination. Yet, despite its cartoonish humor, it also works well as athriller and has a dark atmosphere. At the same time, this movie isclearly inspired (in many ways) on several cartoons, such as the LooneyTunes, Tex Avery's 'Red Hot Riding Hood' and even the liveaction/animation movie 'Who Framed Roger Rabbit'. The movie also hasgreat sceneries and backgrounds, as well as great lines, nice specialeffects and its magic.Cameron Diaz in this movie... my goodness! Is there any guy whowouldn't fall in love with her in this film? She was really a stunningbeauty in this film. She was absolutely at her hottest and most sensualhere: she was more curvy, sexier, so beautiful and her smile was evenmore enchanting. Her role as the gorgeous and loving Tina Carlyle was agreat acting debut for her. Plus, she was great in this role. In fact, she was a better actress in her early acting years than in more recentyears. And she got slimmer with time.Cameron Diaz also sings very well in this film, with a husky, jazz-likevoice. What a difference comparing to 'My Best Friend's Wedding', whereshe sings terribly. She was 21 years old in 'The Mask' but she surelylooked older than that. She is really like a live-action version ofJessica Rabbit in this film.Other funny characters (along with Stanley Ipkiss) are CharlieSchumacher, Milo, Detective Doyle and the impatient Lt. Mitch Kellaway. Most of the soundtrack is great: the opening theme and otherinstrumental themes during the movie and even the cheerful songs "HeyPachuco" and "Cuban Pete" - this last one is sung by Jim Carrey himselfin a hilarious part where he (as The Mask) dances and makes thepolicemen dance either. It really makes one wanna dance. Most actors are pretty good in their roles: Jim Carrey, Cameron Diaz,Peter Riegert, Peter Greene, Ben Stein, Amy Yasbeck, Richard Jeni,Nancy Fish, Jim Doughan and Max.Max is the name of the dog that portrays Milo. The intelligence of thatdog deserves to be mentioned. This breed of dog is known for itsintelligence and loyalty, but also for being lovable, playful andstubborn dogs. Milo is all of that. Plus, Milo seems to understandeverything they tell him. When his master is giving him orders, hemoves his head as if he is understanding every word that is said. Plus,he climbs a considerably tall wall to rescue Stanley and we can see inhis eyes when he is feeling fear, joy and sadness, for example. What afabulous dog actor! The loaner... what a piece of junk! That car makes its own sceneshilarious! Why? Simply because of what it is: a charger in a junkyard.Jim Carrey makes this movie as good as it is. I believe that this moviecouldn't possibly be this good without the great Jim Carrey. This rolewas made for him and couldn't be played by other than him. This should definitely be on Top 250. |

Fun story, and Jim Carey is hilarious!!!And don't forget about Cameron Diaz! She is HOT in this, her screen debut! Basically this is comic book stuff with special effects playing a prominent role. There's some implied violence, but it's more-than-offset by Carey's tremendous comedic talents. Overall, a highly enjoyable movie experience! |

Sssmokinnn'...But Not Really On FireThere was some buzz around the time of THE MASK'S release in 1994 that Jim Carrey had finally found a cinematic vehicle worthy of his talents. Well, yes and no. Carrey, like his predecessor in manic comedy, Robin Williams, was too big a talent for the small screen, but, in both their cases, the question always lingered: was their talent big enough for the big screen? Actually, that's too glib a question. The talent was obviously there. It really was a matter of finding the right vehicle to express it. After ACE VENTURA, THE MASK couldn't help but appear to be a step up.But, of course, Carrey's taken several steps since then and has gotten himself real screen cred with more recent critical successes like THE TRUMAN SHOW and last year's ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND. More than ten years on, howver, it looks likely that the film will be better remembered as a landmark in computer generated action than as a comic vehicle for its star. You have to give Carrey his props, however, he is one of the few comic actors who can hold his own against all that CGA. You could almost say that the animation is, in fact, an extension of his own wiry physicality. If not quite seamless, it comes pretty close. Carrey was probably the kind of kid who did flawless imitations of cartoon characters. That he should become one in this movie seems fitting. As a live-action cartoon, THE MASK is right up there with ROGER RABBIT. (And just who is hotter anyway? Cameron or Jessica?). Its quotes of old Tex Avery cartoons (as well as others) should tickle pop culture aficianados everywhere. Heck, even the dog named Milo is a cartoon quote. It's all very clever, and you can almost forgive the movie for not using its human actors nearly as well. (Peter Riegert, a fine actor, has virtually nothing to do here, while Amy Yasbeck is asked to do almost too much in her brief screentime.)For what it is, THE MASK works pretty well. It's silly fun, and something of a landmark in CGA. Of course, there are landmarks and there are landmarks. In terms of plot or character development, it offers little new. The nerdy good guy tapping into the hero within is as hackneyed a plot device as you'll ever get. Maybe if the movie had stuck more to its darker graphic novel origins, something a little bolder might have come of it. But if it's not avant-garde, it's still pretty entertaining. Still all this advanced technology rendering service to a hoary plotline makes for something of a missed opportunity. |

A movie for everyoneI disagree with the other reviewer, when I first saw this movie I was16 and I thought it was brilliant. I am 22 now and I still like it. Theonly reason you should avoid this movie is if you dislike Jim Carrey'sstyle of overacting and being silly (I know some do). Otherwise he isgreat in this and without him I don't think the concept would work atall. There is a balance of story with all the comedy and while it isn'ta life changing movie it is fun and well made, the effects are greatfor a film of it's age and stand up OK even 10 years later. Thecharacters are ideal, the two detectives are the perfect double act andCameron Diaz is both incredibly beautiful and talented in her first bigrole. In summary, I think adults can enjoy the silliness and the comedyas much the kids and the plot, acting and effects knit the whole lottogether really well. |

FUN HAS NEVER BEEN SO GREENDid you know that this excellent comedy was planed to be a horror?! Based on popular comic, THE MASK would be a storu about green killer who tells sarcastic remarks, while he's tearing a part his victims with an axe. But, when director Chuck Russell got Jim Carrey for this role he decided to do a comedy. And lucky for him and us he did a great job. I remember when I saw THE MASK for the first time. Fantastic story, interesting characters, and of course, Jim Carrey in role which made him famous. Story is about unsuccessful, shy banker who comes in possesion of an ancient wooden mask which turnes him into a wild, green, party creature who now has everything: powers, money and love. It influented on me so much that I find the same dog like Milo (that is one damn smart dog!). Carry gave the best of himself: he danced, sang and made jokes all the time. Cameron Diaz left me breathless, and two caps..., well, see it for yourself. This film guaranties fun whole 90 minutes it lasts and trust me, you will love it. |

Jim Carrey doing what he's best atAnother movie which showcases Jim Carrey's ability to elicit laughs withcomic antics and bodily contortions. Whether special effects were needed isquestionable, given Carrey's apparent ability to twist and turn his bodyandface into all kinds of positions. Even disregarding Carrey's comicaltalent, this movie stands on its own. The special effects and dialogue, thoughcrassand cheesy sometimes, are a big hit in this kind of movie. Add in Carrey'sperformance, and the whole show is a riot. |

WOW!I just saw the mask 2(son)and i realized how good the first one was.I liked this movie when i saw when i was 3(1995.)I immediatley wrote reviews for these. This is a real classic.I really reccommend this film.Even if it is rated PG-13 and parents may not want their child to see this,it is really cartoonyand a film you will turn the tv off saying"I am glad I did not hold my child from seeing this."I was ay hollywood video one day and i saw this kid who was about,14,he picked a PG movie and his mom said quote"Nothing that is not G."I felt VERY HUMOUNGOUSLY sorry for that kid.14 and not allowed to see a PG movie.I felt that mom should be arrested. That was way too wrong.anyway, this has very advanced special effects for a 1994 movie.Alot of movies do but if you like action comedies or just action or comedy, you will like this movie. |

Plays Well By CarreyTHE MASK (1994) **** 'The Mask' plays well by the then-rising star JimCarrey, cast as a happy-go-lucky bank clerk who discovers a mysticalmask that turns him into a maniac superhero with eye-popping powers. Hehas a blast circling the dark, shady town in which he lives playing amasquerade of sorts. But he gets into friction when he clashes with alocal gangster and a police detective. Knockout newcomer Cameron Diazsparkles as the night club singer who serves as the love interest toCarrey.Rating System***** Excellent **** Good *** Fair ** Poor * Bad |

"With these powers, I could be a superhero, fight crime, work for world peace. But first..."Me, a devout comic book fan, must admit that, in this instance, it's the movie which made me seek its comic book source from Dark Horse. THE MASK - and, before it, ACE VENTURA: PET DETECTIVE - catapulted Jim Carrey to superstardom in the early '90s. And, of the two, THE MASK is easily the more widely appealing, more audience friendly picture. It takes a certain taste to really appreciate the macabre, really odd bird that is ACE VENTURA. The plot to THE MASK is sketchy at best but damn if it isn't festooned with several moments which I call sheer movie magic. In Edge City, bank clerk Stanley Ipkiss is one of them meek pushovers you and I often tend to step on. Every day Stanley takes in all the abuse and lets it fester, and then one evening, after getting tossed out of a club he never even got into, he ends up on an empty bridge, finds a curious wooden mask floating in the river. Later we'll learn that the mask is possibly of Scandinavian origin and possibly belonged to Loki, the Norse god of mischief. We learn even sooner that the mask harbors very peculiar properties. That it bends reality, that it manifests the wearer's inner desires, relaxes inhibitions. Stanley Ipkiss has tons of suppressed inner desires. When he dons the mask, the movie really takes off. This movie, in its design, fosters elements of 1940s film noir and those wacky classic Warner Brothers cartoons. And if that combination doesn't intrigue you, then how about this mention of Cameron Diaz's sexy debut? One of the interesting twists in this film is that while Stanley Ipkiss meets two lovely ladies - a feisty girl reporter (Amy Yasbeck) and a slinky blonde chanteuse who's also a gangster's moll (Diaz) - the femme fatale turns out not to be the obvious one. Diaz and Carrey surprisingly drum up some good chemistry. Surprisingly, because when you think of Jim Carrey, you don't instantly assume, hey, romantic leading guy... Peter Reigert, by the way, does his best to ground the story with his irascible and deadpan police detective, but it's always a lost cause when Carrey is on the set running wild and mugging for all he's worth. Even that awesome Jack Russell terrier dog gets upstaged. You just have to endure the moments when Stanley Ipkiss is being Stanley Ipkiss, good-hearted and polite and excruciatingly dull. But I didn't come to this film to watch a doormat at work. The real meat of the story is whenever Ipkiss puts on the mask and we then see that loony character with the green face and tombstone teeth and those garish zoot suits. This is the personification of Stanley's deepest, most pent-up urges, and it's a good thing for the citizens of Edge City that this id is predominantly playful and works off Tex Avery cartoons. As the Mask, Stanley strikes a pose and declares: "With these powers, I could be a superhero, fight crime, work for world peace. But first..." Even a nice guy like Stanley is prone to petty little acts of get-back. Oh, I pray for those two poor auto mechanics... but they deserved it.ILM steps in to handle the Mask's eyes googling off the sockets and his heart throbbing out and that inner wolf cavorting, but I wouldn't have been surprised if Carrey had managed all that by himself - that's how uber-malleable his face is, how rubbery his frame is. Jim Carrey himself is a walking, talking Tex Avery cartoon and that's even before he puts on his makeup. This film is perfectly suited to his manic improvisational talents. There are gangsters here, of course, but the Mask treats them more like props in his routines. The Mask's powers are so insidious that you never get the sense that he's really in any sort of danger. You're just left waiting for the next burst of crazy or the next musical number. There are two absolutely magical moments in this film for me, and they're both musical numbers. Carrey and Diaz exuberantly dancing in the Coco Bongo club to "Hey Pachuco!" Then Carrey turns the tables on an army of hardened cops and leads them in a conga line while singing "Cuban Pete." It's neat that the Mask demonstrates a knack for sucking everyone in vicinity into his world of playful anarchy. It's too bad that the film makes it a point that not everyone's inner persona is so playful. Someone else puts on the mask, and you instantly note the difference.By the way, unlike most of the scuzzy guys implied in this film, not for one moment did I ever think monogamy was some kind of wood. |

For the cartoon lover in us allJim Carrey lets it all out in `The Mask', and he hasn't stopped. The roleseems to be perfect for Carrey, who is famous for being the `rubber-faced'comedian of Hollywood. In his true breakout role, Carrey plays bank tellerStanley Ipkiss. We all know people like this: so friendly and nice thatthey become nothing but doormats… and then are too nice to even ask us tostop. However, after being tossed out of a nightclub one night (and beinghumiliated in front of his dream girl, played by Cameron Diaz), he finds amysterious mask floating in the river. It may seem like an ordinary maskfor now, but when Ipkiss puts it on, his inner-self is released. Finally,he's able to be as free-spirited and cartoon-like as he's always dreamed (welearn early on he's a huge cartoon fan). He now has the power to dowhatever he wanted… but not before taking some revenge on those who make himmiserable. I watch this movie for two main characters: Ipkiss and his faithful dogMilo. When the Mask is on the screen, the audience cheers. When Milo is onthe screen, they cheer even louder. When Milo puts on the Mask… well, youget the idea. As usual, Carrey is an utter delight, letting loose in this role and bendingit to his will. It's this type of comedy that die-hard fans fell in lovewith, not to mention creating future roles including `Liar Liar', `Me,Myself and Irene', and `Bruce Almighty'. I still laugh like crazy whenIpkiss puts on the mask. For the record, if a person is not a fan ofcartoons, then they are not going to like this movie. It includes plenty ofreferences to classic cartoon characters (not to mention a fitting tributeto Tex Avery's Wolf). I'm an avid cartoon fanatic, so this was a movie thatwas right up my alley. If you're an fan of the old animated slapstick, thenI recommend this movie with 5 neon stars! If not… well, best try your lucksomewhere else. |

The Mask... with cameron diazSo the other night I said to my sister, hey, remember 'The Mask'?So, well, she like flipped out. So we rented it right away. We went to the video store and there were all these people there, and we had to pay late fees.So then we watched it and we hadn't seen it in years. And we were kinda upset because when we were little our mom made this edited version where she taped over all the nasty parts... like... a crest commercial would suddenly come on. It's because our brother might become a womanizer if he saw a girl flipping her hair around. like the part where the guy tries to lick the girl, and the part where the dog pees on the guy and you see his weener. Nolla kept saying "I never saw this part, I never saw this part" I think the worst part was that we had no idea that cameron diaz was even IN it until we watched it the other night. Anyway, it was kinda good. I liked that it made sense. Actually... i don't know why we even watched it at all when we were kids. It was mostly mouthwash and juice commercials anyway. Maybe we were all just stupid. |
