Overall, an enjoyable movie

"The Other Guys" is a film that perhaps works better as a whole than asa comedy or action flick. It stars Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell astwo cops with totally different styles who try to climb their way upthe police rankings. When an opportunity to make themselves noticedarrives, the two will have to set their differences aside andcollaborate in order to solve the new case. This film brings nothing new in terms of comedy, but there are surelymoments that will make you laugh. The problem is that these momentsalternate with some where the story simply stagnates, moments that arenot particularly funny. I had the impression that the directorenvisioned the film in two totally different ways and not knowing whichone was better, he decided to mix them together. "The Other Guys" isalso an action movie and the action scenes are pretty well made forthis kind of film. It is silly, but that's the way it was meant to beand from this perspective the film reaches its objective. Also, whenyou put the comedy and the action in the balance you will find that theresult is actually satisfying. Wahlberg and Ferrell make an OK couplehere, their chemistry is not great, but you can't blame them for nottrying. As for the other actors, I liked Michael Keaton's role (he issuch an underrated actor) and thought that Steve Coogan was good in hispart as well.Despite not being that funny, "The Other Guys" compensates with itsgood action scenes and above average acting. While it feels that theresult could have been better, this is a quite entertaining flick andit is still worth a look.My rating: 6/10

Stupid

This movie could have been good, but it was just really stupid. Way over the top and they tried too hard to make it funny. I think it failed big time, which is surprising because it has a good cast. Don't waste your time.

It's "spit soda out of your nose" funny

First, in full disclosure, I really can't stand Will Ferrel. Sorry, butI find him insufferable and annoying. So I wasn't expecting much fromthis film. Boy was I wrong. I could not stop laughing the entire show!Ferrel and Marky-Mark balance each other perfectly. Wahlberg is theperfect straight-man, but also offers his own humor, in a tough-guykind of way. ("They took my shoes again! What is it with takingpeoples' shoes?") Michael Keaton as the police chief is a perfectchoice. He is funny enough that this isn't really a 'Will Ferrel'comedy, it really is a total group effort. Big names like Sam Jacksonand Dwayne Johnson add big-name punch and set up the farcical nature ofthe entire film. My advice- sip your soda quickly, or else it'll becoming out your nose.

A light hearted action-comedy.

Whalberg and Ferrell are a terrific team. Whalberg hasn't really everdone comedy before, with the exception of his wonderfully amusing turnin The Departed (which earned him a nod from Oscar). But like hisperformance in Scorsese's Best Picture winning crime saga, he rarelyplays it for laughs as the highly-strung Hoitz – a couple of "peacock"moments aside – instead choosing to generate his humour as thestraight, albeit tempestuous, character. After a string of less thanimpressive movies in the previous few years – The Happening, Max Payne,We Own the Night, The Lovely Bones – hopefully this return to formmarks a comeback. In the other corner, Ferrell provides his usual big child routine, yetagain producing hilarious results. His random verbal rants – the tunafish monologue is outstanding – are delivered with an almostmonosyllabic tone and very few facial expressions, making thematter-of-fact diatribes even more entertaining. The talentedsupporting players don't contribute as much as they should have. Keatondidn't resonate as the TLC-quoting Captain, Coogan is plain unfunny asthe weaselling capitalist and the intentionally over-the-top portrayalsby Jackson and Johnson as vainglorious cop partners didn't hit thefunny bone as much as I was expecting.Director McKay keeps it simple. He allows his odd-couple stars to dothe bulk of the work and minimises the rest. Of the very fewdirectional flairs on show, a scene midway through presenting a bignight out with a roaming camera and motionless images is amazinglyeffective and eye-boggling flashy. Elsewhere you have a satiricalsoundtrack that accentuates that parody-esquire tone of the film and ahandful of cunningly written scenes that takes the Mickey out ofHollywood with a blithe glee. But this is the Whalberg-Ferrell show and their chemistry guarantees alight-hearted 107 minutes of action-comedy.3 out of 5 (1 - Rubbish, 2 - Ordinary, 3 - Good, 4 - Excellent, 5 -Classic)

TERRIBLE

Ok let me start off by stating I have loved, I mean really loved all Will Ferrell movies and all his SNL skits.. Seriously this was the worst movie I have ever seen in my 32 yrs on this earth. I kept watching only hoping it would start to get good, did not happen! I don't know how this could be so bad considering the amazing cast, please do not be fooled by the names in this movie. All writers and directors were high or really drunk when written/made. Acting was bad, nothing to do with the actors, pretty sure it was just the script. Again let me save you 2 hrs of your life you will never retrieve if you see this 'movie' ... sorry and thanks for letting me vent. .I would have given this -stars if it were possible. (and I want to add an extra 'BOOOO')

The Other Guys...When you Keep politics out of it,then it's Funny.

What Happen To McKay and Ferrell?(even funnyordie has become political and unfunny; Some of my favorite movies Anchorman,Talladega Nights(Somewhat not a lot),Stepbrothers(the kobayashi guy is in The Other Guys.)I should have known from The little star(the same communist star courtesy of Che The Criminal)at the start of the movie with the Sanchez name coming out, even at the end of the movie with the Anti-Capitalist Factoids/Rants and the Rage Against the Machine song.I mean if you enjoy Michael Moore this might appeal to your feeble mind,Even if it did not have the whole Corporate Raider/Enron/wall Street/Bear stearns is bad theme to it(Ironically the Film does Plug the Hideous Prius,Bed Bath and Beyond and the University of Phoenix so much for Those "Greedy Corporations" and Businessmen huh Hollywood?)The movie would have still fallen short, the comedy comes in small doses and at times dragging and dry, Despite a Cast with Ferrell,The Beautiful But Sadly Liberal Mendes,Mark Wahlberg who somehow is not funny but does not make the film bad,Captain Gene(Michael Keaton)and My Favorite The Rock And Samuel L Jackson "Aim For the Bushes!" "There wasn't even any Scaffolds"the kobayashi guy from Stepbrothers(The Catalina wine Mixer!)and for some Reason Damon Wayans Jr.(not too funny),the start of the movie is funny but as you get into the movie it becomes plain as day that if Ferrell and Mckay want to continue cranking out hits and making money out of the same system they abhor so much they should focus on actually being funny and stop trying to save the world or making films at the spur of the moment just for making it,A movie that had Potential becomes an Epic Fail.

Not Good. Not Good At All.

I didn't have high hopes for this Will Farrell (Megamind, Everything Must Go) movie. The trailer looked horrible and I figured this would be a typical Farrell movie. At this point in his career if you've seen one Will Farrell comedy, you've seen them all.I do like his work in more serious/drama films. The Other Guys are Farrell and Mark Wahlberg (The Fighter, Invincible); two detectives who are on the bottom rung of the police force. Farrell is a money man and Wahlberg shot Derek Jeter during a baseball game. They're the joke. But they get their chance to be heroes after some crazy circumstances. (I wasn't sure what to think after The Rock and Samuel L. Jackson plummeted to their death)I will say that Farrell knows how to do oddball comedy. Some of the things that come out of his mouth are genius in their timing and totally from left field. Most of the time, though, I wasn't laughing. The language is over-the-top but more importantly, the movie is just bad. Or maybe stupid is a better word to describe it.I'm beginning to wonder if this guy is trying to make movies that are only funny after you've been awake for 12 hours straight. As funny as he is, Will Farrell made a bad movie here.

Very Good

Wasn't as funny as "Step Brothers" or "Anchorman" but still very good. Will Ferrell was good as always but Mark Wahlberg was also very good. Michael Keaton's character was great as well. Reminded me of some of his earlier stuff.

The first 15 min were the best....

Hello again, another review from Thailand, sorry for the gram andspelling mistakes :) I always try to be very open minded about movies. And not to be to black and white about how a movie is. As always youcan find things you dislike about a movie. Then you weight that out tothe good things and then come to a nice average point to give to themovie.Humor is a very hard emotion to please everybody with. Some ppl lovethe hard cussing in movies (Samuel L Jackson trademark) And some lovethe high intellect humor of say a John Cleese or a Rowan Atkison thatare able to give you a smile from ear to ear without even speech. The thing is when i started up the movie, you see Dwayne Johnson, who ireally love as a actor! Really a great asset to the cinema. And SamuelL Jackson (the man is a old granddad and still going strong) i was likeTHIS WIL BE GREAT! Samuel the great Go beep yourself personality, andThe rock as a duo perfect fit. Now i was not expecting a Danny gloverand Mel Gibson chemistry (Lethal weapon 1 to infinity) But it feltgood.Sadly but true, the die pretty early and there replaced by a WillFerrell, and a Mark wahlberg my mood degraded with the minute it isreally bad.Mark was not able to play the "angry" cop, he came over to me as aannoying person with no real convincing skills to make me laugh. Samuell Jackson that made in his 15min (CAMEO i call it) with the rock 2sentences that made me laugh like hell.1st beginning when he lands his car in the city bus "Uhh did someonecall 91 holy sh*t!" 2nd When he tells Will Ferrell to shut up "Ai aij! you shut your mouth,if i want to hear you talk, i put my hand up your *ss and work you likea puppet" I can assure you, the rest of the movie is utterly boring. There is nochemistry between Ferrell and Mark at all. The don't fit as a team upthe have a lousy sense of humor. Will is as usual LOUD very loud..I wanted to turn it off after the TUNA story (trust you even for fansits a idiotic scene that made no sense and its supposed to be funny). Istill cannot believe that the killed of the Rock and Jackson like that.Or even that the rented themselves out for such a bad movie.1 point its really awe full..

immature prejoke-youlation

i read a few of the reviews towards the beginning, chronologically... idon't know WHAT these detractors wanted... one says that the fizz ranout too quick... the other that the jokes were almost non-stopmisogynistic, etc... he-frackin-LLO?!!?! a)i laughed all the waythrough(and i don't usu go for these sorts of films...but this one isANYthing but 'mindless' teenage fart joke level...even though it b)DOESuse misogynistic, fart level jokes to get certain points across... thatthis is the sort of thing that passes for humor amongst these sort ofprofessions. not that i'm agreeing... but i've seen my share of machodialogue in various films and TV series and if this movie isn't partparody of those sorts of shows, then i guess i missed the point. alongwith these reviewers... the acting in this was superb. EVERYone hittheir mark, timingwise... which i guess means that the directordeserves vast amounts of credit, as well...i don't imagine it's evenCLOSE to easy to put something like this together... thanks for thelaughs...i needed them...

Potentially a great movie, but a flop in current state.

When I went and saw the other guys I was surrounded by males, rangingfrom fourteen to about twenty-five, and then other ranging ages fillingin, but not as populated as the ones mentioned. Going to see thismovie, there was hope for entertainment, humor so one could laugh, andyes there was that. The movie had great physical humor when it wasacted out right and a pretty well laid out attention grabbing plot. But, this movies plot was all out of "whack". The flow, the acting, itwas just in pieces. Though people find "Mark Wahlberg" to be an awesomeactor, which I have enjoyed his pieces before this, he fell short. Hismission to accomplish the personality of an uptight driven cop becamethis spastic waste of screen time. I am a fan of him but this was awaste of his talent. One could tell in the action scenes that is whathe is meant to do, that is where he excels. But when he would try andbe funny, it made me get aggravated because I felt it to be to forced. When I complained this to my company I was with, they believe that iswas made the movie so funny, but the humor has no substance if it isidiotic and choppy. The flow was totally interrupted every timeWahlberg little bits would come in and it would make all the scenesdiminish from what they could have been. Now I am not blamingWahlberg's acting on this, I am blaming the directors and all those whosaw this going down, and actually thought it was a good thing. Mostpeople want to try new things and step out of their safety zones butthis was too far out and it just did not fit.One movie that this one could have taken notes from is "Superbad". Ifeel like their characters made the movie because they were awkward, and played into their roles as awkward people. McLovin was on of themost awkward characters especially when at party and around girls, buthe pulls it off. His nerdy-ness was used for the better in that movie. That makes me believe that Wahlberg's hard ass personality should havebeen worked in better. Though it was present it was tainted by makinghim look a little psychotic. Will Ferrell has never had a problemmaking people laugh and its because he embraces how he is funny, withawkward situational, sometimes physical humor. That is something thatWahlberg did not have or did not do, or was not intended to do. Maybethat was the point for Wahlberg's acting, maybe that was what he wastold to do, but it made the movie a flop for me.

Other Guys - Comedic Bliss........

The Other Guys is another benchmark in the successful pairings between writer/director Adam Mckay and Will Ferrell. These guys have consistently cranked out a solid product for the better part of 7 years now (starting with Anchorman), and Other Guys is no exception. Ferrell and Wahlberg pair up for the first time (although I must admit I would have preferred John C Reilly in this role), in a action/comedy/buddy film that feels fresh even though the story has been told a number of times throughout the years. Excellent cameo's throughout and the action is infectious and realistic. Overall, a hysterical romp with Ferrell and Wahlberg, a buddy cop duo to end all duo's.

TLC has never been this funny!

I have not laughed this hard since "The Hangover". This has to be the best comedy I have seen this summer, hands down. I only wish I could think of a TLC lyric to bring it all home. Does anyone remember "Waterfalls"? From the wooden gun to the non-stop one liners, I was rolling in the floor. Will Ferrell has not been this good since "Old School" and Mark Wahlberg was ever bit his comedic equal in this fantastic film. From Samuel L. Jackson and Dwayne Johnson all the way to Michael Keaton, everyone was amazing. Whoever did the casting for this movie took a second seat to only one person, the writers. The script was drop dead hilarious. Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg play two down and out cops? Mr. Ferrell seems to be stuck in his rut by his own choice and since I don't want to give anything away, let's just say that Mark Wahlberg made a colossal mistake to have found his way down to the lower levels of hell. Luckily the two of them are partners. Samuel L. Jackson and Dwayne Johnson are the heroes of New York City but do to some unforeseen circumstances, they quickly relinquish their title. Wanting to seize the opportunity of the new opening for a hero, our two bumbling cops attempt to solve a very big case.Apparently some guy has been constructing some buildings without getting a scaffolding permit. Are you kidding me? The two losers meander down to arrest him and fall into a very large case of fraud and an attempted robbery, of a very large nature. I am trying very hard not to give away any of the punch lines in this film but admittedly it is difficult to write this review without doing so, since I was laughing the entire movie. From driving the Prius into a bucket full of cocaine, all the way to being disgusted about the four homeless guys using it as a sex toy, I was laughing continually.Have I said yet it was too damn funny, and this is coming from the guy who only a few months ago said Will Ferrell was washed up. Talk about eating your words. Even Eva Mendes was fabulous as the homely housewife of Will Ferrell that Mark Wahlberg couldn't seem to stop ogling. With some movies you see all the laughs crammed into the two minute commercial and when you see the full length feature there is nothing left. With this movie the commercial is only the tip of the iceberg. The explosion scene was funny but trust me, if you liked the commercials, you will flat out love the movie. Everyone in the theater was holding their stomachs from beginning to end. This is a must see movie. It was absolutely incredible.

Great Will Ferrel Movie

This review is from: The Other Guys (The Unrated Other Edition) [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray) This movie is an all around favorite with both guy's and girl's humor. I just love Will Ferrel movies he is one funny guy.

(2012-03-26 15:09:29)

Absolutely gut busting hilarious!

This is one of the funniest movies to come out in a very long time. Here's why:1. The movie was filled with belly laughing funny bits that were surprising and not the typical cliche kind of stuff. I haven't laughed this hard in ages. 2. There was also a lot of subtle humor, also making this movie very entertaining. 3. Will Ferrell was absolutely hilarious. That's to be expected. What was so surprising was Mark Wahlberg. He was different from his normal hard as nails tough guy roles, and he played off of Ferrell just perfectly. He was so hilarious. 4. Samuel L. Jackson and Dwayne Johnson were perfect in their roles. They weren't on for long, but they were part of some very funny bits. Michael Keaton also contributed some fun to the movie. Eva Mendes was perfectly cast. All in all, a superb cast that made for an uproariously funny comedy. While there were periods that moved a bit slowly, that shouldn't stop anyone from seeing this movie. The laughs more than made up for any slower times. Also, those slower periods set up some of the funniest bits later on, and they set up the story. It was really relaxing to laugh so hard. I felt like I had a mini-vacation. I'd absolutely recommend this movie.

The Other Guys

I which I say "The Other Movie", I had feelings that this movie wasn't going to be good and I hoped it was going to be, but it was just flat out stupid. I even liked Ferrell's stupidest movie (that he says that is his worst), Land of the Lost. I loved Land of the Lost, which was in fact dumb, but actually enjoyable. The Other Guys was just painful to watch, I was consistently waiting for the movie to end. I usually LOVE Will Ferrell's movies, but he hasn't made any outstanding movies recently. I believe this has to be one of the worst movies he's made to date. It was just as bad as Grown Ups.

(2012-03-25 11:42:36)

Comedy but should have been rated R

We rented this PG13 movie and I was shocked that it wasn't rated R.It has funny lines and situations, but the crass and crude remarks and scenes made it uncomfortable for me to watch with a teenager. I haven't followed these actors except Will Ferrell briefly in Elf and on SNL a long time ago, so this may not have been over-the-top for other viewers, but it was for me. It seems like a movie that would be watched at a bachelor party, not by a 13 year old. At first I thought it was more like Airplane, but the excessive crudeness took away from the humor. I did not watch the entire movie because it just seemed a waste of time.

(2012-03-24 16:13:35)

Amazing and Fun if you are over 30

You have to be over 30 to get this kind of humor. Or at least be smart. If you understand the film you will love it.

I guess just THE Guys were too dumb for the job... Damn right!

So you got THE Guys who without sense jump from a god damn roof aimingfor the bushes and you got the OTHER Guys who are similar in actions tothe dumbest cops in the world (but if the other guys are the dumbestcops in the world well what makes THE guys be?). Sounds fun? Maybe, maybe not... But here's the deal: one of them, career wise, is acomplete failure wanna-be and the other guy is a sore loser which getslaid every night thanks to the most gorgeous woman on the planet I mayadd. Sounds hilarious enough? Oh wait! Not at all... the story of thesetwo "dudes" characters it's the same as each story about two otherwanna-be detectives who are trying to become the best cops: they dostupid things, they fail in almost each move they make but still, atthe end, they get the girl and the fame... now ain't that sweet?Honestly, this movie is full of clichés but it had, I must admit, somereal funny moments... At least it was to a certain pointentertaining...The casting was so and so. You have Dwayne Johnson aka "The Rock" andSamuel L Jackson thrown in the movie just to sell some tickets but infact you only get one of the "not-so-good" (let's not call it "theworst") actors of the moment, Mark Wahlberg and you got a classiccomedian, Will Ferrel, which was the only good male choice. He acted sowell as a nerdie loser type of cop I almost enjoyed pretty much eachscene with him. The best female part goes easily to Eva Mendes, notonly that she looked hot but she is a better actress than most of these"Hollywood Models".The film was shot pretty good, you got a stop-motion scene which wasreally cool till I realize you have Black Eyed Peas as soundtrack...Then again, the soundtrack was in the same tone with the movie...Hilarious... Overall, the movie is watchable, enjoyable, fun, ridiculous at points... It's entertaining if you look for a movie thatdoes exactly that... I mean as a comedy it makes you deliver somelaughs but otherwise it's just average...
