Much better than expected

I am still not sure if excorcisms really need to be done, but I cannot fault Hopkins for his performance as the priest who exorcises demons in Italy and then is himself possessed and in need of help from his young protege.Apparently this story is based on two real priests, and I am going to find out more about them since this film piqued my interest.

Religious Delirium

This is a typical religious movie designed to promote illogicalsupernatural fears, unquestionable submission to the authority of thechurch and belief in imaginary entities of good and evil that havetormented the psyche of people kept in ignorance by design throughoutthe history so that a few people in power could enforce their will andrule on the uneducated masses.Religion is a form of control mechanism that presents the people withan eternal afterlife in stupid bliss and love by force for the creatorversus a severe punishment for those who prefer to think rationally andfor themselves rather than blindly follow the nebulous commands of acelestial dictator as conveniently and cunningly interpreted and re-interpreted by his representatives on Earth to suit their desires, ambitions, thirst for power and delusions of grandeur. And the key word in this is "afterlife" because no promises are madefor the real and only life we people ever have because the earthly lifeshould be devoted to the service of the celestial dictator and inparticular his earthly representatives and all other types ofartificial authority figures our society has invented to satisfypeople's pursuit of power and domination. The movie goes to incredible lengths to persuade us of the existence ofboth the benevolent and malevolent supernatural religious entities byexposing a rational person who made the wrong decision to waste hislife by becoming a priest to a wild variety of extraordinary eventsthat cannot possibly be interpreted in any other manner than thesupernatural and in particular the delusional preachings of theCatholic church. Therefore, the message of this movie is this: when coming face to facewith extraordinary events suspend your logic and rational thinkingprocesses, run to a library and read an ancient 1st century bookwritten by illiterate bronze-age people suffering from psychoticepisodes and everything will be explained for you in full detail, including the name of the supernatural entity responsible for the harm.If there is something that can be described as sacrilegious in thismovie it is not the display of upside down crosses but its greatoffense against the billions of people who lived and worked and diedfor our civilization to reach its current level of knowledge andquality of life fighting against the superstitions and irrationality ofour primitive past.

A Behind The Scenes Look At Exorcism Is The Highlight Of A Poorly Paced And Filmed Movie

Essentially I watched this for two reasons: I really like AnthonyHopkins as an actor, and exorcism movies are usually interesting, sometimes fun and often scary. Of those two reasons, I would say thatthis isn't anywhere close to being Hopkins at his finest. He was prettygood, but I've seen him offer much stronger performances. As to theexorcism itself, there was some interesting material, mostly revolvingaround the rites used by the Roman Catholic Church, there wasn't reallyvery much fun involved in this, and there was very little that wastruly frightening when compared to other movies that deal with similarsubject matter. Hopkins, of course, wasn't the lead actor. That wasColin O'Donoghue as Michael Kovac, a young man trying to find his wayin the world, attracted to the priesthood as a sort of escape, and sentto Rome to study to become an exorcist, where he's eventually assignedto assist Father Lucas (Hopkins) - a veteran exorcist.I felt this was inconsistent. It lacked flow, it seemed to jump to andfro, and it dawdled along at a slow and meandering pace and in allhonesty it didn't hold my attention that closely. It was also shot bydirector Mikael Hafstrom in a dimly lit fashion, which I guess wasintended to heighten the sense of mystery or fear, but which franklybecame - to me at least - quite tiresome after a while. It's one ofthose movies "inspired by a true story" and indeed based on a book by aman named Michael Baglio, an author who attended an exorcism trainingcourse at the Vatican (the corresponding journalist character in themovie is actually a rather attractive Italian woman played by AliceBraga - does that count as "dramatic license"?)Assuming its technical accuracy, one does learn a fair bit about theCatholic rite of exorcism. How accurate it is to actual events - whoknows. I don't deny the possibility of a spiritual force of evil thatis active and present in creation, but this movie didn't reallyconvince me to believe any more than that either. (3/10)

Human Drama Both Seen and Unseen

Review of "The Rite" DVDMichael Kovak (Colin O'Donoghue) has always been "a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief." (Isaiah 53:3) The only son of a Chicago funeral director, Itsvan Kovak (Rutger Haer) Michael lived literally down the hall from death his entire life. Unlike most young men who never experience death close hand, Michael is steeped in it, preparing bodies for burial with his father. As a young boy, Michael is coaxed by his father into helping prepare the corpse of his mother, by gently blowing on the red fingernail polish his father applies as he lovingly prepared her body, while whispering endearments into her ear. The image is forever seared into his memory, tainting his adulthood with a lack of faith and a sense of detachment. When time came to make a decision about his profession in life, Michael knew well that his options were limited, as he told a friend, "in my family; you either become an undertaker or a priest". Michael chose the priesthood, not out of sense of mission, but as a way out of his bleak existence and a means to pay for college. After he is ordained as a deacon, Michael's guilt over deceiving his superior about his intentions impels him to write Fr Matthew (Toby Jones) about his decision to leave the seminary. He admits he has no faith and feels he has no vocation to the priesthood. But fate intervenes before Fr Matthew can act. The two men are involved in a car accident where a young woman is fatally wounded and Fr Matthew looks on stunned silence as Michael blesses the victim reluctantly yet tenderly as she dies. He is impressed by this and convinces Michael to delay leaving the seminary until after he has taken a two month course in Rome. A course in exorcism; "you're an undertaker, so you're not squeamish" he adds with a gleam in his eye. Not at all squeamish, Michael plays the role of devil's advocate in his exorcism class in Rome, challenging his instructor over whether the possessed are suffering from psychosis, and is nonplussed over a sudden power outage when the demon Baal is mentioned. In order to help Michael overcome his doubts about the existence of Satan, his professor, Fr Xavier (Ciaran Hinds) sends him to observe veteran exorcist Fr Lucas Trevant (Anthony Hopkins). Michael is joined in his doubts by Italian journalist Angeline (Alice Braga) who wants him to share his experiences at Fr Lucas side for the purposes of an article. These two young cynics are about to engage in a life and death struggle which will evoke deep-seated fears and upend their worldviewAn eccentric Welshman, Fr Lucas lives a lonely existence in an obscure corner of Rome, occupying an ancient villa whose courtyard is overrun by cats. Fr Lucas takes Michael's cynicism in stride, and advises Michael not to engage in conversation with the demon who possesses the pregnant teen who has come with her sister for her regular exorcism session. Michael is so captivated by her predicament that he finds himself drawn into a life and death struggle with the devil whose very existence he denies.Although the movie trailer plays like a high-tech adaptation of "The Exorcist", to which exorcism films will inevitably be compared, there is more spiritual and emotional depth to director Mikael Hafstrom's work than Blatty's. "The Rite" more closely resembles the cinematic subtlety and theological accuracy of "The Exorcism of Emily Rose", according to Fr. Gary Thomas, the priest from the book on which the film is based. Michael is a sympathetic character and the film's dramatic exposition of the tragic origins of his faith crisis help the audience sympathize with him as he confronts demons both within and without his tortured soul. Even eccentric Father Lucas, played compellingly by Hopkins is more vivid than the ghostly older priest in "The Exorcist", yet the pairing of priests to defeat Satan is a familiar theme. Fr Lucas even makes a sarcastic reference to "The Exorcist" telling Michael, "You'll see no spinning heads and pea soup here!" What will enliven Catholic viewers is the authenticity of the phenomena of the exorcisms and the splendor of the priesthood when contrasted against the darkness of pure evil. Special effects enhance but do not overpower this compelling thriller and magnificent architecture of Rome augments the timelessness of the story. For the many fans of the book by AP journalist Matt Baglio, on which the film is loosely based, screenwriter Michael Petroni has respected the basic story while raising the emotional stakes to great dramatic effect when combined with excellent cinematography and the masterful presence of Anthony Hopkins. Priests who watched the film in the theatre with me had a positive reaction but pointed the following theological errors; as a deacon, Michael could not give absolution as he appears to do in the case of the dying woman, and that an inexperienced priest with emotional wounds and of questionable faith would never be chosen to become an exorcist. Too many weaknesses for Satan to exploit, they explained. The manifestations of possession (vomiting nails and frogs, unearthly voices, superhuman strength and knowledge of inner weaknesses) are absolutely accurate, according to Fr Gary Thomas, the real priest from Baglio's book, who had a less dramatic change of heart about the existence of Satan. When I asked him in an interview whether he believed that the devil was a being he responded, "I believed when I met him". For older teens and up for frightening and macabre scenes, appropriate but vivid sexual innuendo (verbal references to incest and rape) and foul language. This film is best seen with parental supervision.

Eh... not very good when you sum it up.

Hi, I actually signed up so that I could review this movie. Thiscontains spoilers. The first two thirds of the movie are actually pretty good. It had myattention and I was at the edge of my seat waiting to see what happenednext... then, disaster struck..OK, let's not get ahead of ourselves quite yet. You all probably knowthe plot by now: a young skeptical priest (who is having secondthoughts on becoming a priest) has been assigned to go to the vaticanand participate in a new exorcism program. His 'mentor' per se isAnthony Hopkins character. The thought behind this was that Michael(the young priest) would be convinced that the devil and exorcisms arereal because Anthony Hopkins is a specialist in this area and bystudying under him he would be exposed to all of this. And, of course,he was!So, at this point in the movie things have been developing prettywell... Michael is still skeptical even though he has witnessed oneexorcism case (yes, just one), he has a potential love interest, andFather Hopkins (as I've forgotten his official character's name) hasshown the audience that he is the real-deal exorcist. We all know from the trailer that Hopkins' character becomes possessedby the end of this movie. So, about 2/3rds through the film AnthonyHopkins is out treating a young boy who is possessed. Michael is alongas well. Anthony Hopkins asks to see the boy's pillow and pulls out afrog, proceeds to mumble a prayer, and then casts it into the home'sfurnace. The two priests leave and walk back to Anthony Hopkins' home.In the courtyard of his home, Michael notices a lot of the same type offrogs that were found in the pillow. Hopkins says he isn't feeling welland then goes to bed. So begins his possession.. YES, this is it.Then there is a scene where Hopkins walks out to a small observationpoint overlooking something (the ocean, a village maybe?) and isseemingly wearing nothing but a trenchcoat. Then he proceeds to smack asmall child and walk away. OK, we get it, he's possessed and isn't hisself. When Michael comes back to Hopkins' home he realizes that he ispossessed. So, with the help of his lady friend (I forget why she'swith him) he goes ahead and exorcises the demon from Anthony Hopkins. Then the movie basically ends. Wow, OK, so just reading the plot may make it seem like a decent movie. And, it is for 2/3rds of the way through. However, the last 1/3 is SOBAD that it RUINS THE ENTIRE FILM!!! It feels like up until the pointwhere Hopkins becomes possessed lasts about 2 hours (I'm sure it's notthat long, but that's how it felt), which wasn't a problem because Ithought things were developing well. Once Hopkins becomes possesseduntil the final credits felt like 20 minutes. The climax was prettymuch non-existent for me. Couple things I have gripes with:1 - Early in the movie Anthony Hopkins tells Michael that possessionscan sometimes last months, even years, of regular exorcisms before thedemons are fully gone (obviously it's more detailed than that in thedialogue), however, he goes from being fine one day to being fullypossessed in what, to me, is depicted as overnight. A week at the most.Basically, he was fine one scene, and then out to lunch the next.Couldn't we have used the previous 2 hours of the movie to develop thisinstead of rushing it within 5 minutes?2 - I understand symbolism and all, but frogs??3 - Based on how the film depicted things, Michael had witnessedHopkins' character perform 3 exorcisms (2 on a young woman and the 1 onthe young boy). Yes, he witnessed them. The film never portrayed himhaving any practice before exorcising the demon from his mentor. Now,we're lead to believe that this demon possessing Hopkins is Ba'aal, oneof the most powerful demons around. Does it make sense that a personwho has never performed an exorcism before could pull this offsuccessfully? Not to me. Especially since earlier in the film, Hopkinshad given a more intense exorcism to the young lady and boy thatweren't as successful as Michael's. Seriously, Michael gave a very weakeffort here. Either the director didn't get enough from his actor, orit was bad casting. This is THE moment of the movie and it fell flat onits face.4 - Cheesy dialogue as the movie reaches its end AND cheesy 'HarryPotter' CGI special effects - look for it at the end, it's there. To me, this movie had potential until the finale, and it failed in jawdropping fashion. Bad dialogue, and NO development. I'm betting theediting removed a lot of character deveolopment between the secondthird and last third of the movie. The editing crew should be ashamed.Normally I'm not a movie snob or anything but there were some seriousfilm class 101 issues going on here, and I don't even know what filmclass 101 teaches.

The Really Old Time Religion

The Rite reminded me of "The Exorcist" from maybe 40 years ago. Compelling, well acted, beautifully filmed story about psychology and faith. Thankfully The Rite is more subtle than the The Exorcist. But the message is the same; namely, there are spirits among us, both good and evil, or at least evil spirits. And evil spirits can have quite an impact. Film was shot in Hungry. I'm turning into a fan of Hungarian films. Much more old fashioned, not nearly as teenager driven as Hollywood. I like my films more adult, less youth focused. And more subtle. This is a horror film with a literary feel to it, like it was made with intelligent people in mind. Sure there are the special effects. But special effects are a very minor ingredient in this enterprise.I'm Catholic, so watching a film that shows no disrespect for Catholicism was a plus for me. But don't be afraid. This is not a religious film. It's a good old fashioned spook film about evil spirits. Plenty of suspense. Very well made, I would think this film would not be objectionable to anyone. Five stars.

Intense!

Saw this movie last night. My husband and I really enjoyed it. We were both moved and brought to tears more than once. I think anyone that didn't enjoy the movie doesn't understand it. We as believers know the movie is about the spiritual battle between God and the Devil and no we are NOT catholic. It is not about the religion it is about faith. I would endorse this movie for anyone who enjoys thought provoking films. Look beyond the "Hollywood" theatrics and realize the meaning behind it. I am telling all my friends and family to see this film.

Roman Chtholic propaganda.

This review is from: The Rite (Amazon Instant Video) This is a movie to keep your mind off of our Lord Jesus the Christ and on the fact that the Devil exists. It shows nothing more... and I feel sorry that Anthony Hopkins opted to play a role in it.Christianity is all "Spiritual" that why Jesus built His Church in the hearts and minds of all the worlds people who will willingly open up their hearts to Jesus and let Jesus be their personal guide back to our heavenly Father who is patently waiting for us to get His most loved Son's valuable message. The rest of the earthly religious institutions do nothing more than promote "Simony" of one type or another... the Church that our Lord Jesus built cannot be duplicated by mankind.

Quick review for a highly underrated film

The Rite is the story of a young man destined by his family to go downone of two paths, he can choose to be a mortician or a priest. In arebellion to his fathers wishes he trains to become a priest with theintention to quit half way through. He is however convinced (andblackmailed by a priest!!!) to travel to Italy and start training as anexorcist. He is sceptical and unconvinced as to whether god or thedevil even exist and as such is introduced to a highly experiencedexorcist (Hopkins) to see things he struggles to explain. The build upthroughout the film is excellently done and the final confrontation isfantastic. Hopkins is back to his absolute best and makes the film hisown. Since The Exorcist there have been very few films about exorcismsthat are scary or suspenseful but this is. I feel it was highlyunderrated and is well worth watching. It would have been glorious toto see Hopkins and Hauer share a scene as they are tow of my all timefavourite actors but unfortunately they don't. The small amount of CGIaffects is used well and not over done in any way. Instead the demonicpresence is better sold to the viewer by some terrific acting. Givethis film a chance as it is better than many which have come before it.

The Rite

The Rite with Anthony Hopkins. "When I saw the previews of this movie, I knew with Anthony Hopkins as the main character it would be one hell of a movie literally." I was not disappointed by any means. If you want to witness a truly terrifieing movie on possession, this is the one hands down. As usual Anthony Hopkins did a incredible job, his performance in this was absolutely amazing and down right terrifieing as well. Colin O' Donoghue and Mikael Hafstrom's performances were outstanding as well. "You won't want to watch this one in the dark, as if you do you may find that your not alone." You'll be wanting to be rebaptised after watching this one, and having your home blessed, just to be on the safe side. Hell just so you'll be able to sleep at night. The real shocker was in the end when you find this was actually based on true events. Trust me, your not going to want to miss out on this one. If you have found yourself sort of distant from your faith lately, this movie will make you a confirmed believer damn fast. Pick up your copy today. And don't forget your Holy Water for Gods Sakes! The Rite The Rite (Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy)

Strong performance by Anthony Hopkins.

After watching this movie, one can leave the theater feeling assuredknowing that there are clergy specially trained to perform exorcisms. The question is: how is one to know if there is a need for exorcism? This movie answers that question too. A trembling hand, popping veins, rolled up eyes, troubling dreams, they are sure signs that it may betime to call the priest, but if you do call one, he better know whathe's doing. A botched up exorcism is worse then no exorcism at all. And, as this movie shows, things can only get worse if the exorcisthimself becomes possessed. Anthony Hopkins gives an over-the-topperformance as the exorcist. Far from being campy, his character isvulnerable and fallible, but also driven by faith which gives thecharacter credibility and dignity. Thus the movie avoids becoming acaricature of other demonic possession movies and offers a story thatis engaging and plausible. After all, we do live in a world where allkinds of behavior go unexplained, so why should a spiritual explanationnot be considered?

Flawed with Clichés and "been there done that", Yet Very Entertaining

This review is from: The Rite [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray) Flawed with Clichés and "been there done that", Yet Very Entertaining. As a fan of horror and Exorcist like films, I blind bought The Rite with hopes that it will creep me out and bring back that wild side of Anthony Hopkins, which has been dormant for years and years. Well, for the most part my hopes were met. The movie is very well directed and put together in such a way that it just flows and it is quite entertaining to the viewer. Anthony Hopkins is actually kind of a funny character. Though the movie is quite serious, there were many parts, more in the beginning, which had my friends and I chuckling. Anthony Hopkins plays a great character, which is very devout, however doesn't seem to care anymore. He has a quite different approach to the whole exorcism thing than others do and this is why a Michael, a young student who is teetering on dropping out of seminary, is sent to visit Father Lucas. Michael doubts Father Lucas's motives and abilities. Michael is searching for a more scientific or medical evidence approach and less leaning towards religion. The movie is very entertaining and fun to watch. A few parts will make you jump and squirm in your seat, but in the end it is nothing out of the ordinary for an exorcist like film and uses too many clichés. The acting is great and everyone works quite well together. Anthony Hopkins eventually starts to play a very creepy role and will freak you out. Picture quality is perfect. There are some light scenes and many dark scenes and all look great. The audio is amazing. There are many little creaks and moans from the surrounds and the sounds and dialogue is crystal clear. The extras were decent with the deleted scenes, however the Alternate Ending was the best part. The Alternate Ending should have been left in the film, as well as some of the deleted scenes, which greatly would have helped with character development and over-all interest in the film. Over-all I should have Netflix'd The Rite and waited until it dropped to the $10 bin, however I blind bought it and I am sticking with it. It was very entertaining and I will watch it again. The over simplified clichés started to get annoying and almost took the scariness away from the whole exorcist thing. It almost makes it seem like it is not as big a deal as it really is. I hated that aspect of the film. If you rent or buy this make sure you watch the Alternate Ending and the deleted scenes. I wish they were in the film however they made me appreciate the film a little more. Based on the deleted scenes it seems as though someone (director, producers, writer) wanted this film to go a little deeper and in a different direction than the movie actually turn out. However all in all it is a good film and a good purchase. It is re-watchable so I am glad I own it.

Best exorcist movie of all times!

Anthony Hopkins is the most believeable exorcist ever. This movie is incredible. The acting is some of the best I have seen in any movie in many years. The plot is interesting and makes many twists and curves along the way. The director really knew what to do with this movie and the photography of the film is breathtaking. I would go as far to say that this is Anthony Hopkin's best role ever and he even surpasses Silence in this one. Great, great movie.

Possession play

Good sex can open chakras, good film too. It concentrates the mind. Soa relationship with a bad film is like bad sex; the mind wanders, thechemistry is all wrong, and just trying to make it work takes out allthe fun. It cannot be work, you got to be swept in. Sometimes yourpartner is inept, sometimes you are.So, I was keeping an eye on this filmmaker. He had made before asupernatural film with some competent visions of internal mind rooms, eventually ruined by the Stephen King pulp he was working from - or soI'd like to think. Inbetween these two, he also made a noir set inwar-time Shangai, again with John Cusack and next to him Gong Li, whichI want to see very much; if only for the titular Welles connection. This, it just isn't good sex. It isn't spectacularly bad either, thekind you can epically recall to your friends when you're over theembarrassment. It's awkward, dull; so yes, largely a shadow of TheExorcist, with a homage of famous shadow silhouettes to acknowledge thedebt, but also a jab at it - 'what did you expect, green pea soup?',the young priest is castigated at the scene of exorcism. So, I'm notsure if they were laboring under the impression while filming that itwas going to be a subtler film, ambivalent towards the demons of themind and eventually perhaps force us to confront our own.I am inclined to think that this what the filmmaker wanted to do;picture, as in 1408, the internal world in disarray. Perhaps the powersthat be wanted a straight-forward film; where the Devil firmly existsand all our efforts to rationalize to the contrary are the Legionblindfolds that prevent us from doing battle. Or perhaps none of thiswas ever supposed to matter. The nightmare meant to challenge perception, whether or not the Devilis an old charlatan's charade or if it bubbles up from the agitatedmind and rises outside, are not really ground deep. Anthony Hopkinsmust have had a helluva time though playing possessed.

Could be better

Anthony Hopkins is a good actor, but he has remained the same for quite a few movies, including this one. Story-line was weak. The supporting actor was actually good; I expect to see him in more movies. In general, you won't miss much if you pass this one.

don't fall for Sir Anthony Hopkins's name, it's not worth a dime. Boring as Hell!!!

THE RITE – TRASH IT ( F ) The Rite is boring as hell, I don't rememberwhat I saw because most of the time I had to forward the movie. I evencannot imagine Sir Anthony Hopkins can ever do a movie so dull as TheRite. The scary sequences were loud, pregnant woman with exorcism was agood thing to see overall. Sir Anthony Hopkins were good but seemedlike trying too hard to have the Spanish accent language etc. ColinO'Donoghue should go back to Ireland, he was decent but bring nothingto the table. His personality was completely boring and tiring. AliceBraga is okay as always. Overall, Trash this one, don't fall for SirAnthony Hopkins's name, it's not worth a dime.

An Edge-Of-Your-Seat Demonic Thriller

I was really excited to see "The Rite," due to the creepiness of thetrailer and my enjoyment of exorcism movies. However, after readingsome reviews I was skeptical about seeing the movie. Some people saidit was boring and did not meet their expectations. However, somethingalmost everyone could agree on was Anthony Hopkins' performance. Manyreviews praised his performance as an old, creepy exorcist whichreflected his behavior and amazing performance as Hannibal Lecter. Hewas, indeed, great in the movie and his acting got better as the movieprogressed as so did the rest of the movie. The story is not the mostoriginal but, it does relate to the skepticism and doubt that comeswith Faith and Religion. The main character was alright and seemed tojust go with the flow. He didn't want to go forth and become a Priestnor leave his false ambition to become a Priest behind. His performancealso grew as the movie went on. The atmosphere of the movie isextremely freaky and dark. It feels lifeless, which is compatible withthe feeling of a demonic presence draining one's soul. Their are only afew exorcist patients however they all have their own personality andwickedness within themselves. The movie starts strong and ends evenstronger as the characters begin to experience even worse feats withthe Devil. The middle dragged a little but did in fact pick up towardsthe end. This movie may be scary to some to almost but will feel darkand freaky to almost everyone. I really recommend body this movie toanybody who loves Horrors/Thrillers and is not afraid to explore theskepticism of The Devil!

Human Weakness Denial

Denial. For woman, I want to buy it before you, looks better thanyours, my man, my idea, and "let's do something, why cuz I'm bored".For guy's, it's the "Nice huh", she's mine, the journey to getsomething, making others feel lower so I feel taller, "I went fishing""I went sky diving" "My house got hit by a meteor". Inspired by trueevents. Michael Kovak is a priest in training attending a exorcismschool in Rome. While in Rome he furthers his training meeting up withFather Lucas Trevant. Michael doesn't believe in the devil or that thedevil is alone and he thinks people make evil to be more than what itis. Watch this edge of your seat heart pounding thriller as Lucas andMichael both get an idea of what non believers could end up on a badday. 4 stars out of 5

It was pretty good.

I dont want to call it intense. I hate to say it, but the guy down the way did fall asleep and start snoring, but it was a pretty decent movie. I wish I had not seen the clips (specifically the one "Follow Me") on here before I went to see it because it kinda tainted my perspective of the whole movie knowing what was going to happen 2/3 the way through it. Otherwise, it was a decent movie. I love Anthony Hopkins and feel he did an excellent job. Although I did leave the film thinking there were questions that were left unanswered. Not the kind of questions that would leave it open for a sequel though.

It's not great, but its worth seeing.

Anthony Hopkins stars in a rare movie called The Rite. I say its rarebecause it is rare when a scary movie is good nowadays ( I mean, we'vegot a Single white female ripoff called The Roommate out right now). The Rite obviously isn't a great horror/thriller, but its a good one.Especially with the year beginning.Newcomer Colin O'Donoghue, stars as a man who needs an awakening fromhis mortician life. So, he goes to become a priest. After a while, herealizes that he doesn't actually want it. So, his teacher (Toby Jones)suggests that he goes to Rome to study exorcisms.Hopkins plays a priest who is "the best-of-the-best" when it comes toexorcisms. Hopkins gives a good performance, as he always does. Makingeven a horror movie look stylish. The Rite isn't a great movie. It says"Inspired by true events", but I mean, you don't know what to believehere. With something as magnificent as Black swan out right now, The Ritedoesn't stand a chance. But it's a decent movie. I enjoy stories aboutexorcisms, and The Rite goes into a lot of detail. Evben though you'renot sure if its all true. The performances are surprising also. Both Hopkins and the newcomer aredecent. Overall, I don't know what to believe about the film. But Ithink you should go along with it. I think its worth seeing, so, I saysee it.B
