smurftasticSix smurfs (Papa, Gutsy, Smurfette, Brainy, grouchy and clumsy)head outon an adventure that they will never forget.I wasn't expecting this movie to be good after the reviews I have seenfor it. But afterwards, I came out of the cinema and was thinking tomyself that I was really glad that I went to go and see it.It really did make me laugh; the character Gargamel (played by HankAzaria) was probably the funniest out of the lot. He was the one thatmade me want to see more. He was funny from start to finish. I alsoliked his sidekick Azrial(played by Mr Krinkle).I have not seen the actual series of the smurfs, so I can not comparethe movie to the series. But it is a great film, and I do recommendwatching this. |

A Great Smurfs Movie Comes Along Once in a Blue Moon!I just finished watching Smurfs with my kids in the movie theater and definitely recommend it to children agest 7-12. To properly rate this movie, I'll comment on it from the standpoint of "should you take your kids to see it?" The movie itself is good with an easy storyline to follow. Gargamel wants to capture the "essence" of the Smurfs so he can be the besdt magician in the world. To do that, he needs to capture one of the Smurfs and the movie goes about telling the story of how he tries to do that. I thought that a child under the age of 7 will likely not get all the innuendos and may even be scared at certain points in the movie--especiall of Gargamel. 12 year old on the other hand are about at the ceiling where they would find the movie funny and entertaining. There are definitely some good jokes that even adults would like--but not enough to recommend it solely for adults who want to see it themselves (although curiously there are always adults in this sort of movie--I kind of wonder why?) A good flick that is about the right length for kids to sit through with some good action and funny moments. |

Excellent MovieThis review is from: The Smurfs (DVD) I brought this DVD for my daughter for Christmas. We had previously rented it and she fell in love with it. Since receiving it, we have watched it so many times that I am actually kind of sick of watching it but I do it to make her happy. |

La La La La La, this film is a piece of junk. The Smurfs 1/2 StarOf all the bad movies based on cartoon series and comic strips, thishas got to be the worst I've ever seen, the story is simple, the smurfstry to get away from gargamel when all of sudden they get time traveledto what you believe New York City of all places then they meet a manplayed by an embarrassed Neil Patrick Harris who has so good in Clara'sheart and TV shows like doogie houser m.d. and how I Met you mother andsome other woman to protect the smurfs or else gargamel will turn theminto gold for what reason. Now the smurfs I Remember from the cartoonwas funny, amazing and had a good heart, this one is just absolutelynasty, truly dreadful and truly, absolutely unnecessary. The Acting is in this one is either horrible, waste of talent, (whatthe hell is katy perry doing in this piece of junk, truly terrible),the screenplay is simply a big mess, the CGI effects are horrible, the3D is trash, the musical score is full of crap and everything else istruly stupid and here are some things that I Truly hated about thismovieThat one smurf would shake his ass, one smurf would fall into thetoilet after he blew his bubble, that the smurfs would also look at aSony electronic billboard and guess who's is the owner of Sony? You guess it Columbia pictures, the makers of this film and the sameones who did two dreadfully bad films like Leonard Part 6 and Ishtaralmost 25 years ago. the makers of this piece of truly dreadful trashoaught to be ashamed of themselves, shame on them and shame on thismovie.Kids might like this, because they haven't seen the original cartoons.Peyo, Don Messick, Hanna-Barbera and others are rolling in their gravesas we speak. This is the worst movie of the year. |

LET BLUE RULE.......I loved this movie, its what good old movies are about, for kids and adults both. It has heart, and love, and the cute smurfs. If you have a heart, and love in your soul, then you will love the magic of this dvd....for all you who have let your childhood dreams and wishes behind, then there is nothing left for you. Smurfs is for those who still dream , and have the child deep in there heart, for all the haters, your one step closer to the grave....never let the love and the child within you DIE. |

The Smurfs are Great!I would like to recommend the movie "The Smurfs". In this movie theactors share the screen with cartoon characters. The movie is in 3D. The movie occurs at the Smurf's village in the Middle Ages, when one ofthe smurfs called "Clumsy" is being chased by the evil sorcererGargamenl. Clumsy is running into a magic waterfall and arrives inpresent day New York. The Smurfs go after him in order to save him and get into the waterfalltoo. I liked it very much because of the plot, the 3D effects, and thefamous actors. I rate this movie a 9 out of 10 because I enjoyed it somuch and think that anyone who watches it will love it as well. |

SMURFIRIFICI took my daughter to see the new smurf movie in 3D and I have to say I was pleasently surprised after reading all of the negative reviews about it. I grew up with the cartoon and now I get to experience them with my daughter. I think it was a very cute and a well done movie. I asked my daughter if she would have liked it better if it was a cartoon and she said no. She is 6 years old and she loved it. The only thing I have to say that is negative about the movie is I can't get the song out of my head, and I can't stop talking smurf, ha-ha-ha-ha I like how they explained why there is only 1 girl smurf with having 99 male smurfs, I don't ever remember them explaining that in the cartoon. I wish they would make a 2nd one where the smurfs get to come back and visit with the new baby. |

Insulted My IntelligenceWatched this with a bunch of kids on New Years Eve, and it was just soagonizing to suffer through. The attempts at humor didn't even bring asmile to our faces. As an adult, I have low expectations, but even the8 year old said "am I supposed to be laughing?"It's smurftastically, smurfing, horrible. The jokes bludgeon yourintelligence, forcing you to try, with grimaces, to feel entertainedand amused. The concept had potential. Cute blue people. Real world. Peril. But itnever went anywhere. I want my buck back from Redbox. |

Ohhh what can I say about this movie? At my school they show different movies every Saturday at 11pm and thismovie was playing. I didn't know what to expect but I never thought itwould be THAT bad. But it was a million time WORSE than I anticipated. This was the first movie that was physically painful to watch. I washappy it was over and I wish there was a way I could hurt this moviebut I can never hurt it the way it hurt me. Bottom line NEVER see thismovie! Even Neil Patrick Harris was bad in this movie which was sosurprising and disappointing! The script was badly written and I hurtto watch. such great actor doing a horrible movie so this makes themlook bad. Its Star Wars Episodes I and II all over again. |

Why did they have to do this? This movie is crap. The plot is silly, and the acting is terrible. Why did the Smurfs have to come to Central Park, of all place? Why couldn't this have been a CGI movie that took place in the Smurf universe? Having them come here to our world was completely unnecessary, and the subplot regarding the advertising campaign was utter nonsense. It was like Hollywood took one of its cookie-cutter movie plots and added Smurfs and real people to the mix. This movie was the same as Alvin and the Chipmunks, except with Smurfs. Total, utter, intense crap. |

Such harsh reviews....but I liked it!I thought this was a great movie! So funny! Went with my mom......don'task. She was laughing at a cat who works for Gargamel (the bad guy.)Hahaha! One joke was someone thought his named was sounded like garbagesmell. XD XD XD Fun and awesome movie! So much action in it! I love allthe smurfs (even the grumpy one.) And don't tell you I warned you ifyou cry-but I cried when Papa Smurf (the wise one) risked his life forthe other smurfs! He is so gentle and wise. The clumsiness of Clumsymakes me laugh. It's so cute when he messes up even though it's bad forothers. After the movie, my mom kept talking about it! I usually likemost movies (so that doesn't really help), but take it from her! SheREALLY liked it. Not like the piece of trash the other movie we went towith my friend. (Crazy, Stupid, Love) |

Objects near, are sadder, and more devastating than they appearNot only does Hollywood succeed in making a boat-load of money off ofthese mangy CGI/live-action films, but they continue to destroy thewarmth, the special qualities, and the simplistic feeling all of thesecartoons had. Alvin and the Chipmunks, Garfield, Scooby-Doo, and YogiBear have all been victims to this new tampering of family films andnow The Smurfs just got smurfed with.I judge family films by two simple things; will the kids enjoy it andwill the parents enjoy it? Very few films take this small rule intoconsideration, because it's a very hard thing to do. When parents taketheir children to films, they usually think "two hours ofday-dreaming." But it doesn't have to be that way. Some films, likeShrek and Spy Kids will charm adults as well as children. But CGI-edfeatures like this easily get bogged down by immaturity, lack ofimagination, and big name stars doing the roles of animated creatures. The story is The Smurfs get sucked into New York City and are beingchased by some creepy magician/wizard, hunchback named Gargamel(Azaria) who wants to kidnap The Smurfs so he can create gold.Meanwhile, The Smurfs get sucked into the real world and land in theclichéd city of New York. This insults the viewer seeing as every filmhas to include Chicago, Los Angeles, or New York to be relevant. So, they get sucked in and go to an advertiser's house where him andhis wife (Harris and Mays) live. It doesn't take much before the coupleto basically briefly adopt these creatures without asking anyquestions. If five inch tall blue people wandered in your house wouldyou ask a minute and a half to two minutes worth of questions beforewelcoming them into your home? Most illogical. This is the rare case where this family film will please neither theadults or the children. It may bring a brief smile to the children'sface, but their smiles will quickly diminish when they discover thefilm packs a plot amusing for only a few minutes, characters that growannoying quickly and don't act out of their names (think of a worldwhere people are called by their stereotypes. IE: nerd, geek, Jew, etcand each one acted like they are said to act). Most likely childrenaged three to five will find some enjoyment in this, but will notlikely be able to sit through this ninety-two minute plot. One character that bothered me was the main villain, Gargamel. Hisappearance is odd, his actions even odder, and his overall presence isawkward and out of place. He has a sidekick cat who he treats like apiece of meat, and that's one thing I can't and will never be able tocondone or go unsaid; I hate animal abuse with a passion. I'm wellaware the cat is a CGI creation, but the thought of someone doing thisto a cat is inexcusable. This cat is beat to hell throughout this film.It is not funny. It is not clever. It is unnecessary.Director Raja Gosnell doesn't necessarily have the best filmography outthere. He has worked on Home Alone 3, Scooby-Doo and its sequel, Yours,Mine, & Ours, and Beverly Hills Chihuahua. Let those films set the barfor this one. There are perks. Neil Patrick Harris does the best he can do under thegiven circumstances. He seems to resent the idea of playing secondhandman to a bunch of non-existing blue people, but does it with a cheery, yet likable persona. Though he can be good, there are parts, like thebig climatic point where he begins to hate The Smurfs, that isn'tbelievable. His anger isn't acted out properly, and the whole sceneruins any sympathy or believability for the characters.Every film can be good, it just needs to be in the right hands, in theright directions, and done with the right cast. The Smurfs could'vebeen good if it wasn't CGI mixed with live-action. It is such an out ofplace, awkwardly made mix that I believe the only two films that did itand did it well were The Spongebob Squarepants Movie and Who FramedRoger Rabbit? If you're going to make a movie about The Smurfs make itone of two ways (1) entirely CGI or (2) classically animated(recommended by me and the audience of America). If you think it can't be done, a new-age animated film done in itsclassic style of animation, watch Winnie the Pooh and tell me I'mwrong.Starring: Neil Patrick Harris, Jayma Mays, Sofia Vergara, and HankAzaria. Voiced by: Jonathan Winters, Katy Perry, Anton Yelchin, FrankWelker, Fred Armisen, Alan Cumming, and George Lopez. Directed by: RajaGosnell. |

They Butched Up Vanity Smurf! :0You don't see Vanity Smurf much in this new movie. However, his voice isn't as stereotypical now. They even got rid of his pink flower and replaced it with a yellow one. I wonder if in the 1980s audiences wouldn't put two and two together the way they would now, especially online. Instead of Tim Gunn playing a human character, why didn't they have him voicing Vanity!? He would have nailed it! I don't have a problem with PC, but maybe the Old Vanity wouldn't be deemed politically correct nowadays. Vanity was around before the rainbow flag was a symbol, but the Old Vanity sure would have looooved to drape himself in one. What if they change Snagglepuss or Peppermint Patty next!? |
