Amazing directorial artThe acting and the dialog aren't the best, but the cinematography isthe real star of this movie. The shots are all framed to feel gritty, dark, garish. The gangs are outrageous but fitting in this dreamlikeinterpretation of reality. The rain washed streets streaked with light, the music, the magnificent Lynne Thigpen as the DJ, the reports to theWarlord of the Riffs done in silhouette. The movie is more art thanfilm. It is violent and it's initial message is more frightening todaythan it was in 1979. As a woman I also have to note that the men inthis movie are very easy on the eye, to say the least. I also like themessage that we are given at the end, that you can make your world abetter place. Yes it's trite, but sometimes we do forget that. Irecommend this movie highly. |

Atmosphere in SpadesWalter hill's most colorful and energetic film, It's decent transfer with a few overly dark and grainy scenes towards the end, but it didn't really matter to me. An essential DVD |

F-ing AThe warriors was is and forever shall be one of the best movies of the70's it had everything from beginning to end, it had wicked memorablelines awesome costumes unforgettable characters. the movie was anon-stop thriller from when Cyrus was shot to when Luthur was broughtdown by Swan's knife. Some of the actors in that movie will be missedlike the guy who played Rembrandt who died from aids in the earlyeighties. But none the less the warriors is and will forever be atimeless classic i mean how many other movies from the seventies had avideo game made based on them and a remake on the way (aproximaterelease date 2008) P.s. Sorry about it dying near the end the review imean it was hard writing 10 lines. Rest in peace Cleon, Fox, And letsall hope Ajax gets out soon i mean its been 27 years |

"Warriors...WARRIORS! Come out and play-ee-AYYY!" A really fun, cheesy suspense flick"The Warriors" is a film that takes place in New York City during thehellish hours after dark, when the gangs emerge to roam the streets andsearch for their prey. One of these gangs, named The Warriors, agree to attend a gang meetingorchestrated by the enigmatic Cyrus (Roger Hill). Each gang sends nineunarmed delegates to attend the huge meeting; however, Cyrus ismurdered by a thug, who blames the crime on the Warriors. They flee fortheir lives into the night, and soon every gang in New York City islooking for them.First things first: this movie is cheesy. The beginning is prettylaughable. The musical score is very much late '70s/early '80selectronica.But that is part of the movie's charm. Its polished big budget remakeis coming out next year (2006), and I personally feel it will failbecause part of the success of this original film is that it IS lowbudget, poorly edited at times and simply a lot of fun to watch. It is very reminiscent of John Carpenter's 1976 low budget classic"Assault on Precinct 13." It achieves its thrills through heavysuspense; as the Warriors prowl the streets heading back to their hometurf we never know when a rival gang will appear out of nowhere andattack. The movie is now a video game by Rockstar Entertainment, andit's one of the few movies for which a video game actually seems tomake sense - it feels very much like a level progression where bad guysattack the good guys, who have to use their brawn and brains toovercome them.Is "The Warriors" a great film? No. From a technical standpoint, it'sterrible. In terms of entertainment, it is extremely gripping. I wasreally enthralled. In recent years, Walter Hill has provided us withsome really awful films, but "The Warriors" is a strong reminder thathe once had a solid vision...it's too bad he's lost that now. |

urban fantasySo many "reviewers" here miss the point of this film - when we all saw itfirst released in the theaters, we knew it was a popcorn movie. All style,no substance. Just an urban fantasy, and it was great fun. The Warriorsdeserves its cult status for that reason alone, nothing more orless. |

BELIEVE THE HYPEI was 15 when this unique movie erupted on the scene I was totally hooked; though there are many social commentries dont look for them, just get on the train & enjoy the ride as reviewers here have said never before and never again will a film so raw yet bright and absorbing be made. The black humour shines through ...Ajaxs' delight that they can't run anymore from the 'furies brings a chuckle every time.............I have owned this on Video for many years(incidently my copy has the opening scene before the titles missing?????????)now i'm content. If u don't enjoy this film you proberly spent your youth worrying about the food chain instead of accepting it..BUY IT |

Dark atmosphere is cool, but it needed more!THE WARRIORS should've been the yardstick of "urban gang warfare" moviesthat are measured for a long time, and we've reached twenty years now.Gritty urban-style action and a typically dark Bronx-Coney Island settingcome together very well. I expected more than just a movie with street thugshanging around. It needed a much better plot to begin with. At first, you'llsee one of the Warriors shoot an opposite gang member setting the stage forthings to come, but the rest is so slow going that it's almost boring.Credit this one for its seedy portrayal of NYC gang violence that neverdies. Not a bad production from Paramount, yet it could have focused more onkey action thrills that makes this more exciting. |

Why couldnt they put the original film to blu ray? This review is from: The Warriors (Ultimate Director's Cut) [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray) The original Warriors is a great movie. Unfortunately this blue ray version has been ruined with comic book segues between many of the scenes. The stupidity of the comic book drawings is exceeded only be the lameness of the captions hinting at what will happen in the next scene. What a horrible hack of a great film. The only reason it gets 3 stars is for technical merit of those parts not butchered. The sound track and video quality are much better than the DVD version. |

Director's Cut......the good and the bad.As a big fan of this movie, I was stoked about it being re-released, along with the game, in a new Director's Cut version. First, the good. The Warriors is simply a great movie with a 70's New York vibe like no other. The performances are solid, the action is fast paced, and during the run back to Coney Island you really get a sense of fight AND flight. Now, the bad. Although for the most part, I liked the idea of the comic book angle. After all, some of the gangs in The Warriors are straight out of the comic book genre. However, in one particular scene, they took it too far and edited one of the most powerful scenes in the movie. As four members of The Warriors escape the police from a subway station and race to the streets, they are confronted by The Baseball Furies. In the original version, they get to the streets, Ajax shouts "Where are they?!" in reference to the other members of The Warriors they were just with, and immediately after he says this, his eyes turn stone cold as he and the others spot The Baseball Furies, standing in the distance, waiting for The Warriors, wielding their weapon of choice, the baseball bat. So it goes from intense, to a fierce intense scene of a never ending battle. In the Director's Cut, this scene is chopped up and all the intensity of this pivotal scene goes down the toilet when Ajax says "Where are they?!", he dissolved into a comic book sketching, and they cut to another scene. This was one of, if not the, best scenes in the movie and they butchered it. The movie itself is still great, but I'll never, ever understand why they did that with that particular scene. |

Summarizes New York in the Seventies like no other filmThis film is a classic for all of those who spew out movie lines that only a select few will pick up. It is in the same class as Fast Times, Spinal Tap, and The Fish that Saved Pittsburgh. It has characters that remarkably are well played out by unknowns. If I could see a sequel of any movie, this would be it.This should be a rental for anyone in their 30's-50's who remember the seventies for what they were.D. Dow Tampa, Florida |

Noooooo! It was the Waaarriors! The Warriors are a mixed-race street gang from Coney Island. They travel 'far' to the Bronx to attend a sort of gang 'conference' arranged by one group that wants to consolidate gang power in New York and run the city. (Yeah, this was NYC in the 70s, not Guiliani-era.) But one gang member decides to just blow away the new leader and then pin the blame on the Warriors, for 'no reason'. The Warriors have to fight their way back to Coney Island all night, encountering gang after gang and avoiding the (totally inept) NYPD. Great photography, great characters, tons of style and color make this a fun movie and a cult favorite. Apparently it provoked gang violence in movie theaters in 1979, yet it comes off as being truly from another time completely. And of course, there are plans to remake it. How thoughtful. Based loosely on Sol Yurick's novel. The DVD looks pretty good, though I have a suspicion that with the impending remake (and Yurick's book back in print) we may well see a Deluxe version in the future. The Warriors deserve it, after all. The film hasn't looked better. There are some great scenes of the various gangs gearing up for the night to hunt down The Warriors. Lots of subway action, and the film takes place almost entirely at night, with dark blacks, and rich colors for the motley gangs. David Patrick Kelly is brilliant as Luther, the crazed Rogue gang member who looks frighteningly like Geddy Lee of Rush on a bender. He has the famous 'Waaarriors...come out to plaaay-ay!' sequence where he clinks bottles together on his fingers over and over.' That's acting. The film also features another enduring quote, namely 'Can you diiiiiiiig it?!' The Warriors is a lot of fun. It's colorful theater, and most of the extras were dancers and were able to pull off the fluid fight scenes. Also, the gangs are fun. The Baseball Furies look like a cross between KISS and the NY Yankees. And what's with the bee-colored gang with the roller-skating leader? You know you're in 1979... Highly recommended. Make sure to have three empty beer bottles ready for the ending... |

the bestIf you're looking for an energy filled movie than this is definitely foryou. The movie has great performances, great settings and of course great fightscenes. The best performances are given by Michael Beck and James Remar.Remar probably stands out more than Beck just because of his tough guyattitude. Another good thing about the movie is the directing. Walter Hillis probably one of the most under rated directors in the business but herehe shows that he is very capable at delivering a remarkable masterpiece. This movie has it all. I recommend buying it immediately |

One of my top ten favorite filmsI wanted to see this film since I was a kid, 1979 I was still in gradeschool, My best friend and I would buy a ticket to see Bambi or someother Disney flick and sneak into the R films. But we couldn't get into"The Warriors". A security guard had been hired to keep locale gangsfrom starting trouble. So when we finally got to see it on VHS in about1988 we ate it up! It quickly became a cult film for people my age.Plot is simple but fun, it's your basic story of a gauntlet that has tobe run. Acting for this film was not a challenge, but for one exception- Deborah Van Valkenburgh plays "Mercy" tough role, and risky role, mayhave hurt her career even, hard to look at her in any other role andnot remember this one. What makes this film is the action often veryreal, street fighters, bats, knives, anything at hand is used as aweapon. Also the sound track specifically Barry De Vorizon's moodsetting music. You really get on the knifes edge watching this film. Iown this on DVD and the sound track CD. It's worth it. |

Great movie. Not so the extrasThis review is from: The Warriors (The Ultimate Director's Cut) (DVD) "The Warriors" is a great movie and this DVD captures that, however my complaint is about the extras. Besides the featurettes in a "Director's Cut" you expect more: deleted scenes, commentaries, but this DVD fall short, besides giving a brief explanation at the beginning, Walter Hill the director of this cult classic doesn't give much info. Buy it for the movie which is great. |

The Biggest movie Influence of my teensWhen I was a teen in the late seventies and early eighties I saw thismovieover 20 times in the movie theater . The look and feel of this movie thewhole story and all the characters they encounter was special to me atthattime. This movie was a huge influence and is forever embedded in mymemoriesof my teen years in the Bronx. The story was the closest movie to the waymyfriends and I, felt, and thought at that time. A realistic comic bookworldthat we felt very attached to and embraced. |
