Plot Summary:
Tuck Everlasting is the story of a girl named Winnie and a family who she meets, the Tucks. The Tucks have a secret, theyre immortal. They drank water from a spring that was actually a fountain of youth. Till the end of time, they will stay that way. Winnie falls inlove with one of the Tucks, Jesse, a 17 year old boy who shares the same feelings for her. Scared of death, Winnie must choose between being immortal and being with Jesse or following the circle of life and dying someday. The Tucks try to teach her how she shouldnt fear death, how they would give anything to die. It teaches the importance and understanding of life and death. It shows that you should not fear death, but to fear an unlived life.

Tried and true formula of two young people who fall in love but whose relationship was just not meant to be.Based on the award winning children's book by Natalie Babbitt, TuckEverlasting pulls on the tried and true formula of two young people whofallin love but whose relationship was just not meant to be.The Tuck family has a big secret that they have been hiding for over80years.they don't age! The family remains sequestered away in a small housein the woods until a young girl, Winnie, played by Alexis Bledel stumblesupon the Tucks and their secret. The romance between Winnie and JessieTuck(Jonathan Jackson) is the main story line as the family figures out whattodo with Winnie after she discovers the family's secret. Mr. Tuck played byWilliam has some of the more philosophical dialog about eternal life, sayingthat all beings exist on a `wheel of life' and change makes life worthliving. The cinematography was excellent, the director Jay Russell did agreatjob in capturing the idyllic beauty of the woods that Winnie and Jessiefrolic in throughout the film. The locations were very important inconveying the innocence of the two characters. Not to be ignored, theorchestral score also played a major roll in accenting the rolling hills, and fields on the screen. |

Disney corrupts. Absolute Disney corrupts absolutely.Tuck Everlasting (Jay Russell, 2002)Another watered-down Disney novel adaptation that had already been done better before (Frederick King Keller helmed the book's first movie adaptation back in 1981). Despite having a who's-who-in-Hollywood cast, Lieber and Hart's braindead screenplay renders this, at best, an ineffective shadow of Natalie Babbitt's classic young adult novel. (Perhaps this isn't surprising; Lieber was responsible for the screenplays for Jay Lowi's execrable Tangled, while one of Hart's recent screen credits was for Lara Croft, Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life.)In case you somehow never got round to reading the book, a quick synopsis: the Tucks-- father Angus (William Hurt), mother Mae (Sissy Spacek), and sons Jesse and Miles (Jonathan Jackson and Scott Bairstow, respectively)-- live in a wood owned by the Foster clan, whose daughter Winnie (Alexis Bledel) is chafing under the ministrations of her oversheltering mother (Amy Irving). After Winnie sneaks off for some alone time, she stumbles upon Jesse at a spring, and, of course, romance must bloom. Complicating things in the Man in the Yellow Suit (Ben Kingsley), who has been searching for the Tucks for quite a while. Because, you see, the Tucks are immortal, thanks to that very spring. Winnie must choose between drinking from the spring, becoming immortal herself, and staying with Jesse, or separating from him and leading a normal life.Disney being Disney, the romance between Winnie and Jesse and the action scenes featuring the Man in the Yellow Suit (I wish he'd finally get a name somewhere, to make reviews easier to write) are brought to the forefront, and the more cerebral portions of the novel-- whose central thesis is, of course, whether someone would want to live forever-- is shoved into a dark corner and brought out only when the screenwriters wanted to give a nod to the original novel. The result is one of the more boring action movies, or one of the least romantic romances, depending on how you want to look at it, I've run across this year. Do yourself a favor and rent the first version instead; or, better yet, just read the novel again. ** |

Don't forget the soundtrack! As a long-time collector of lush, beautiful soundtracks and scores of motion pictures...this particular score is outstanding! In the "music" section of Amazon, listen to the samples of this soundtrack...and rest assured...the entire score is as good...and better...than the short samples. |

Not Oscar-worthy, but enjoyable just the same. No, this isn't a FABULOUS movie, but it is enjoyable, sweet, and a goodmovie. Better than the book (which I felt was boring). You must keep in mind the audience for this movie. The dialogue issimple, the philosophy not too complex, and the love story is sweet and innocent.Ifyou want to watch a ground-breaking, Oscar-worthy movie, watch L.A.Confidential. If you want to watch a sweet, enjoyable movie, watchthis. |

GO SEE IT!!!!Go see this movie. The previews for it are horrible and don't do themoviejustice. This movie is absolutely wonderful. It is beautifully done.TuckEverlasting leaves you thinking. The acting is wonderful!! Parts of thebook were changed to make the movie more appealing to movie goers and itdoesn't hurt the story at all, just addes to it. Scott Bairstow, who ishardly advertised about being in the movie, gives a wonderful performanceasMiles Tuck. Jonathan Jackson and Alexis Bledil (sp?) also give wonderfulperformances. GO SEE IT!! A Fun Movie For Adults and Kids! This review is from: Tuck Everlasting (DVD) "Tuck Everlasting" was originally produced in 1980, but this later Disney version is its equal, if not better. Several cast members have quite extensive resume's, including Sissy Spacek, William Hurt and Ben Kingsley. This is a magical mystery movie, and is also thought-inspiring, romantic ... and fun, too! |

my all-time favThis is a great luv story. u could watch it a million times and not get tired of it. i loved the actors and actresses, esp. jonathan jackson as jesse is so cute(hot). and alexis bledel is very pretty. she is in gilmore girls too as rory. they both go together. the story was awesum too. natalie is a great author. but ofcourse i didn't like the ending. infact i would have drank the water and live forever with jesse. but what winnie decided was her choice. even though she did luv jesse, she found out that living forever has its ups and downs. i mean even if the tucks had wanted to die they couldn't, it was sort of like a punishment. i wouldn't want that either. for a disney movie, it is the best. i hope you buy or rent it. because it is the best, love story, mysterius all the same. library is the fastest way to get it. i got mine from there. and keep this question in your mind: would u like to live forver. u might. but also think of the consequences........ |

Great Family Movie with a ConscienceThe plot of this movie is intriguing. Yes, you will have questions. Butalmost all of the questions will be answered by the ending. The bigquestion it asks, and answers, is What is life all about? Most of us think at first that if we could live forever, it would begreat. This film shows you the joy of life and how you might use it,share it-- or what it will cost you if you can't share it or live itwith loved ones. It also causes you to re-consider the idea of beingforever young--particularly if that were to happen, but not by choice. The advice the dad gives in the boat scene with Winnie is thought-provoking (William Hurt, in one of his best roles). Cissy Spacek isalso excellent as mother Tuck. By the end of the film, Winnie has seena lot and gets to make an amazing and mature choice that obviouslyguides the rest of her life. In a sense, she is way ahead of Jesse Tucknow. The performances are all good, particularly those who play the Tucks. All of the characters are more or less interesting or amusing, but theromance and the wisdom that come of Winnie's meeting with the Tuckfamily are inspiring and life-changing. The performances of the entirecast--and the life-story demonstrated by each character--contribute toWinnie's dramatic acceptance of the natural decision she must make. All the characters in the film--all but the eerie Man in Yellowbrilliantly played by Ben Kingsley--agree that life is about family.Winnie learns it is also about being able to experience differentperiods in your own development, and changes in your own perspective. An interesting "What if," Tuck Everlasting is a great movie that helpsus think about what we want in life and about who we are. This is thekind of movie you will want to watch once a year. |

Sweet And Touching Disney Love Story For Teens.i've always thought this was a sweet Disney film. sure it's basicappeal is for teen age girls to watch with their boyfriends, but still,it was a teen love story that i would watch with more interest thansay, a 'Twilight' film. unlike the whole babyish 'Twilight' franchise,'Tuck Everlasting' has some appeal for adults. it does feature SissySpacek, William Hurt and Ben Kingsley after all. all of them actorsthat appeal to a older crowd.that still doesn't change the fact that the two main protagonist hereare two teenagers. but the whole thing is done with some sophisticationand a lot of good taste, unlike a lot of nasty, raunchy teen fare thatis usually offered up to that age group.this is a really nice Disney film and perfectly acceptable for familiesand all ages despite a silly PG rating. this is basically a G ratedfilm. there is no swearing or sex, and really no violence to speak of.a real stand out for a time period where even family entertainment cansuggest a lot of un-wholesome content.this is true Disney wholesomeness in the classic Disney tradition, andlike most Disney classics and like the protagonist Jesse, this film hasa true timeless quality to it. a must as a coming of age filmexperience for kids. |

Wonderful movie; wonderful acting; loved the chemistry between Jackson and Bledel is amazing!I loved the movie! I loved the chemistry between Jonathan Jackson andAlexisBledel. It made the movie seem more real, the love story between WinnieandJesse more real, almost like it really happened. The acting in general wasamazing. Sissy Spaceck did a wonderful job of portraying Mae, as didWilliamHurt (Angus) and Scott Bairstow (Miles). This movie was beautifully done. The music was wonderful. I believe this movie will make it's way intoeverybody's hearts, young and old. |

Sweet and enchantingHonestly, I wasn't expecting a lot from this movie. It looked beautifullyenchanting from the trailers, but appearances can be deceiving, I expectedit to be little more than a silly children's flick. But I was pleasantlysurprised when I saw the film. The acting was wonderful, an excellentfilmdebut for young Alexis Bledel, and wonderful performances from WilliamHurtand Jonathan Jackson. This was a sweet film that people of all ages couldenjoy. Teens, kids, and adults. I liked the story because it saidsomething important about life. Nothing terribly insightful or original, mind you, but it really made the story something special. William Hurt'scharacter tells Winnie "Don't be afraid of death Winnie, be afraid of theunlived life." Despite Winnie's love interest in Jessie Tuck, when itcomesdown to it, she chooses to live her life, not live forever. The moral, though fairly obvious, is important nonetheless. The point of the film isto show us the importance of everyday life. Of taking advantage of eachandevery day, and living life to it's fullest. Though in reality, we do nothave the choice of immortality, we can, however, choose to really live ortosimply exist. This was a beautiful, sweet, and enchanting film with alesson behind it. I highly recommend it. |

A Thinking Person's Family FilmNicely filmed and intelligently conceived (based on Natalie Babbitt's novel), Disney's "Tuck Everlasting" works on enough levels to make it an entertaining film for the whole family. Unfortunately it gets bogged down in sentimentality and spends less time dealing with the many issues it raises, making it less substantial than Bobbitt's original. The classic Disney feel is there, with sweet emotions, pleasant vistas, and good-natured simple characters; the sweet Mrs. Tuck (Sissy Spacek) and the reserved but good-hearted Mr. Tuck (William Hurt). The Tucks and their two sons hold the secret of immortality, which they have found to be both a blessing and a curse. "Tuck Everlasting" is set mostly in early 20th century America and is told through the point of view of Winifred Foster (Alexis Bledel), a 15 year-old girl who stumbles upon Jesse Tuck (Jonathan Jackson) deep in the woods her family owns. She is introduced to the Tuck family and their secret, along with an entirely new way of living. The Tucks take their time with life, appreciating everything around them. Since they themselves don't change physically they are focused on monitoring the world as it changes around them.Coming from a wealthy and very proper family, Winnie finds the Tuck lifestyle very refreshing and stays with the Tucks rather than returning home. This is symbolically represented by her switch from a wardrobe dominated by a tight corset to one of loose comfortable dresses.Suspense is introduced by a mysterious man in a yellow suit (Ben Kingsley) who is getting increasingly close to learning the Tuck's secret. Romance is introduced by the growing love between Winnie and Jesse. Although Jesse looks 17, he is actually 107. Apparently after 107 years of living, he still has a thing for teenage girls. You'd think that mentally he'd be trying to move up but this is just one of a host of problematic questions that arise if you try to take the story literally. The "Tuck Everlasting" novel is an expressionistic story and the Tuck family themselves a surreal device much like the repeating day in "Groundhog Day". Using this device the film is able to raise questions (many of which cannot be adequately answered but are fun to contemplate) about a number of issues. Should Winnie follow tradition and do what the world expects of her or should she seek adventure and set her own expectations of herself? What does it mean to get older? Are there times when secrets are necessary? At one point Mr. Tuck tells Winnie that she should not fear death but should fear the unlived life, she doesn't have to live forever-she just has to live.Another expressionistic theme of the book/film is the isolation of the Tucks from the rest of society because of their immortality. They do not share the one thing common to all living creatures, the limitations imposed by time. To best appreciate this story it is important to remember that it is about Winnie's life and not about the Tucks. They are just there to prompt her to consider the many issues that are facing her as she transitions from being a child to being an adult. The DVD is full of additional material. There are two commentary tracks, the more substantial one by director Jay Russell and screenwriter James Hart and a second one by Russell and cast members Jonathan Jackson, Alex Bledel and Scott Bairstow. Russell doesn't describe what's happening in the scenes so much as discuss the film-making process. It is here that he attempts to justify turning Babbit's 10 year-old heroine into a teenager. Although claiming that an older actress could better convey the thematic content, it seems more likely that it was done to expand the target audience demographic by inserting something of interest to teenage boys. There's also a "Lessons of Tuck" viewing mode, in which the film is interrupted a few times and discussion takes place about the various themes that have been introduced in the preceding segment. Finally, there's a featurette on the life and inspirations of author Natalie Babbitt. Then again, what do I know? I'm only a child. |

Do not be afraid of death...This movie was an enjoyment from the start. This is a story of a younggirlwho wants to escape her parents rules and expectations. She goes willfullyinto the woods to seek out something new. What she found changed her life.Alexis Bledel did an amazing job as Winnie although in the book Winnie isaten year old girl, rather than fifteen. Jonathan Jackson was also verygood. He was a very believable character and he made you feel as though youmightalso want to live forever. He found the best in everything unlike hisolderbrother Miles. Some may not like it, but it is a heart-warming tale thatwill last for ages. |
