Plot Summary:
The up-and-down-and-up-again story of musician Dewey Cox, whose songs would change a nation. On his rock n roll spiral, Cox sleeps with 411 women, marries three times, has 22 kids and 14 step-kids, stars in his own 70s TV show, collects friends ranging from Elvis to the Beatles to a chimp, and gets addicted to - and then kicks - every drug known to man but despite it all, Cox grows into a national icon and eventually earns the love of a good woman - longtime backup singer Darlene.

A pretty good movie, and the music is really wonderfulI really enjoyed watching this movie, it is a very good parody of Walkthe line and I LOVE the music! I really do enjoy the jokes. But really, this is one of the best film-music I have ever heard. Thisfilm is a must if you enjoy good comedy that doesn't go over the lineand just become a mess like "Meet the sparans" or "Superhero movie".I don't really have word for how awesome the music of this movie isgood!Normally I hate musicals, because I think the music is pretty empty andshallow, but the music in this movie has very good rhythm and funnylyrics but still good written.I give this movie 10/10 because of the music, but the movie is good to.You have to see this movie! |

Really funny! This review is from: Walk Hard - The Dewey Cox Story (Two-Disc Special Edition) (DVD) This movie's a classic! It's funny, but not in the current definition of "funny" these days. It's funny like the old Leslie Neilsen / Airplane / Naked Gun movies were. With jokes that are truly humorous without relying on stupid gross-out humour like most movies these days. I rented it because I was in the mood for something ridiculous, and what I got was much more than I expected! Not only is it good for a laugh, but John C. Reilly can really sing! And kudos to the costume designer! The movie spans 60 years, and they nailed the period clothing to a "t". Very funny, ridiculously smart, well acted, and worth watching. |

A definite Top Five stinker! This review is from: Walk Hard - The Dewey Cox Story (Two-Disc Special Edition) (DVD) I don't normally write reviews. I have other things to spend my time on. But, in this instance, my commitment to save my fellow human beings from undue suffering guided me to do the right thing. The bottom line is that the script directly parallels every scene in the Walk The Line movie. Not a glimmer of original thought at all. OK, so this is suppose to be a parody. But isn't a parody suppose to be funny or at least thought-provoking? This film is neither. Unfunny script and terrible acting to boot with nothing at all of a redeeming nature. All in all a painful experience. I've watched thousands of movies in my lifetime and this makes my Top Five Worst List without reservation. |

"I've been halved pretty bad!"John C. Reilly is awesome!! I would definitely recommend watching the movie "Walk the Line," prior to viewing "Walk Hard," because you will definitely appreciate the humor a whole lot more!! Jenna Fischer is great in this too. Out-takes are hysterical!! Of course there are some corny parts, but all in all I'd recommend this movie highly!!!! |

Poor but for the musicFilm Review: Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story Starring: John C. Reillyand Jenna Fischer Spoof, nostalgia and great music The story of RockLegend Dewey Cox begins with a rather amusing line by the on-stageorganizer: "I'm looking for Cox; anybody seen Cox?" That pretty muchsums up the film, with the exception of its only saving grace – themusic. While the film itself is little more than a cheap shot at every othermusical biography, it provides viewers with many nostalgic moments ofthe industry's greatest artists. Dewey Cox - a fictional icon – is ahard rocker with a penchant for trying out different women; drugs andvarious styles of music. His peculiar relationship with Hassidic Jews brings freakish absurdityto the film, but the comedic element of The Dewey Cox story isseriously lacking. The producers of SuperBad and Knocked Up could havedone a whole lot better that this slice of mediocrity.Best left alone. |

Bring on the parodyAnd if there is a musical genre out there short of orchestral symphony,it gets sent up by this wonderful comedy. Not a movie for the kiddies by a long shot, but if you are familiarwith music artists from the 50s on, and especially if you lived throughthose periods of time, the parody of styles and stars will leave youwith sore sides from laughing.Make sure to listen closely to every lyric. They don't miss a chance tomake jokes subtle or broad, and they don't take it easy on anyone.Songs in the credits are just as funny as songs through the body of themovie, so make sure to wait around for those rather than switching offafter the story itself fades to black.A personal favorite of mine are the scenes where Dewey discovers newdrugs. Although I've never taken drugs, even smoked marijuana, thesescenes were just too funny to be offensive, especially the firstdiscussion of the weed just named.Be in the mood to watch a comedy, especially for a parody of this type.If you can't really pay attention, you won't get everything, and willjust think the movie crude. Also, if you're really stuck up aboutwhat's in your comedy, then you may not like this movie. If you're up for it, you'll die laughing. |

HorribleAs a fan of Will Ferrell-style comedy (and I've loved Reilly in othermovies), as well as a fan of the Johnny Cash and Ray Charles biopics, Ithought mixing the two couldn't go wrong. I was horribly disappointed.Almost every joke was completely predictable – you could see thepunchline coming from a mile away, and when it arrived, it wasn't veryfunny. About the only thing good in this movie was Tim Meadows, who hadme howling every time he was on screen (he's the only reason I gave ittwo stars instead of one). If my daughter hadn't been in the nexttheater watching a movie with her aunt, I would have walked out andgone home. |

A Fresh and New Experiment for ApatowNormally we see Seth Rogen leading in the Apatow movies. Just recentlyhe has broke onto the screen with Knocked Up and Pineapple Express. Itis all well and good to see Rogen make a name for himself, but I foundit to be a great decision to see John C. Reilly get a change to make ahuge starring budget in this one. Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story is adifferent approach in Apatow's film career. It may include drugs andsex like all of his other movies, but the main back drop is the life ofa musician. With a different cast involved instead of the regularApatow clan. You really find yourself laughing a lot during this movie, because you see Dewey Cox experiment with music through every singletime period that a revolution of music happened. So if you are a fan ofJudd Apatow and a person who does enjoy the work of John C. Reilly Iwould check this out. |

I Love This MovieWalk Hard traces the life of Dewey Cox, an infamous musician you'venever heard of, from his boyhood in Alabama and his last days as amajor music celebrity. This is a role the vastly underrated John C. Reilly was born to play.He is absolutely hysterical in this role, and shows incredible musicalskill performing the soundtrack. Reilly is just so, so funny in this,it's my favorite role he has ever done. A role you have to see tobelieve, he embodies Dewey Cox as if he was Dewey Cox.The music is great, all original hits inspired by the different timeperiods Dewey "lived in". I'm not a fan of Judd Apatow usually, buthere his efforts are wonderfully concentrated with direction by JakeKasdan, both of which wrote the script. Kudos on their best work, wesee Dewey go through every decade, and the tribulations Dewey faceswith love, drugs, and music.Jenna Fischer shows some surprising talent that's a far stretch fromThe Office, playing Dewey's second wife. Tim Meadows and Chris Parnell,of SNL fame, play hilarious members of Dewey's group. Raymond J. Barryplays disapproving father Cox in spectacular fashion. This is one of my favorite comedies ever, and well worth the ten ratingI give it. If you haven't seen it, watch it. You'll love it. |

The Third LayerI know of only three periods in Americam history when it can be saidthat the people as a whole, as Americans, were truly noble. Where beingwas more about ideas, ideals and intents than tribal exclusionism. One of these was the late sixties. If you were there in the midst ofit, you would have experienced something that simply cannot bedescribed today — a sort of group mind that was so shared and sharedwith better futures that is was often mistaken for spiritual. Much of that reflected and was fed by the music of the time. Folk.Rock, and that quantum edge between that often seemed perfect. So you, dear reader, may have to simply accept on trust that the music of thetimes, and times themselves, mattered. That's even though the artifactshave been since re-incarnated as ordinary things.Much of that ordinariness has been because of how we have reinventedthe story to allow ourselves to handle the disappointment of thefutures we ended up with. And a large part of that reinvention has beenthrough movies that retell and reshape.Much of that can be laid at the feet of the slick marketeers behindwhat has become known as "country" music, where the story is in thesurrounding wrapper of a metastory: honesty, forthrightness, god andcountry, guns. (This package comes with the standard negatives:anti-gay, woman, minority, etc.)The unwitting patron saint of this particular reinvention was JohnnyCash, a poor soul swept up in his and our addictions until even afterdeath. That's when we got a particularly revolting biography. We seemedto want it. It has true love, a successful struggle with demons, performances of music to fill in for the thin story. Grimaces and joy.It also trivialized what the music of the era was. It turned a wholesocial movement into a mere plot device, no different than say a DenzelWashington-coached football championship. The music didn't matter atall. It was the fame that turned lives. (Something similar happened with "A Beautiful Mind" where themathematics was incidental instead of what made the man mad, and alongthe way changes imagination in and of us all. But few people believe inmath, and nearly everyone considers power in music as heavy.)Oddly, our reaction to this trivialization is not to look deeper at thereal thing, but to add a third layer of abstraction that furthertrivializes. I must admit to laughing here and there, especially at theDylan spoof. But I left the theater wondering if this is all we end upwith from this era. Is it merely a joke now? Is this yearning and workalready the same level as the fodder for "Austin Powers?"Kids used to play with toy cars. They weren't real cars, but the playwas generally along the lines of what real cars do, sometimes flying, but not as planes — only cars on air-roads. Then at some point, thecars could transform into robots and the robots themselves conveyed asimple cosmology of good and evil. Play became disembodied, and theconnection with reality was lost. This is a transformer movie: three layers removed, transforming whatcelebrated complexity, subtlety and ambiguity into somethingmanufactured by promoters as a battle of good and evil, and thentransformed into a joke.Tom Paine dies again. I'm sure Apatow thinks it is just simple fun, like goofing on Nascar. It seems important that it is not.Ted's Evaluation -- 1 of 3: You can find something better to do withthis part of your life. |

Good, but have reasonable expectationsI really enjoyed this movie...lots of sexual innuendo (more than I carefor) but that is what Apatow is known for in his movies. It's too badbecause it (along with the terrible Beatles impersonations) cheapen thespot on parody of musician biopics. Reilly is great although he doesn'tmake for a convincing 14 year old but that is probably the point! He'sa great singer and while I don't think I'll be buying the soundtrack, they had a very talented group of songwriters crafting the tunes thatpropel Dewey Cox to the top of pop stardom. The film is unevenly pacedwith an emphasis on his early years and then little attention given tohis actual music career once he becomes popular. A little too much ofthe focus on his drug addiction but maybe that is part of the parodyfactor as well. This is one of those movies that is good but could havebeen SO much better with some additional scenes to illustrate how hiscareer developed instead of solely on his personal life.I recommend this film but it's important not to have inflatedexpectations. It's got some really hilarious bits but don't expect itto be over-the-top funny. |

Raunchy, funny, musical comedy biopic of the year.If you are looking for a heart warming story about a musician, you'rewatching the wrong musical biopic!Dewey Cox (John C. Reilly) is a young boy (15 years old when he getsthe crowd at Springberry High all riled up), who uses the pain ofsawing his brother in half and the disapproval of his father, to launchhim to super stardom.Dewey Cox is a raunchy movie about the most amazing musician that neverlived. With songs like "Walk Hard" and "Guilty as Charged", Dewey Coxchanged the world forever. You'll be singing some of the songs afteryou exit the movie theater.John C. Reilly has done a great job at portraying all of the elementsof recent music biopics. Kristen Wiig is funny as Dewey's wife whothinks he's not going to make it, even after he has had all of hissuccess. Jenna Fischer is also hilarious.John does all of his own singing which is good to see. My only gripe isthat other characters that do sing (mainly Jenna Fischer's character)aren't using their real voices. My favorite thing about the movie was all of the hilarious cameos.Frankie Muniz as Buddy Holly, Harold Ramis as a Rabbi in the musicindustry, Jane Lynch as a news reporter, and Jonah Hill shows up aswell. There is a hilarious running joke in the movie with Tim Meadows, JohnC. Reilly, and drugs in the bathroom. Easily, my favorite thing in themovie.I was a little disappointed that some of my favorite things in thetrailer, weren't in the movie. But trailers are always deceiving. If you have seen other Judd Apatow comedies, you'll enjoy this one. Youdon't need to know about Ray Charles or Johnny Cash's life to enjoythis movie. |

Funny tribute shows love of music, and the talents of John C. ReilyWhile Walk Hard was something of a commercial failure, the film was proof that Judd Apatow and co. can do no wrong. Like Apatow's previous productions, it mixes raunchy humor with a bit of sentiment. That the film does this while spoofing the music biopic genre is a feat unto itself. The film comes alive through the performance of John C. Reily. Let's get this out of the way: someone take notice and give this guy an award - he is talented. The film is more or less a parody of Walk the Line and Ray, both garnered with Oscar Nods and awards. To parody honest work filled with a lot of sadness seems at first seems like it might be in bad taste. But rest assured, this is a tribute to those musicians. The movie is filled with some zany moments, including Dewey's initial discovering of the blues, his brother getting cut in half, and a ridiculous confrontation with his father. The film makes intentional references to music biopics with the cheating, drugs and the so called "dark period" of so many musicians. These moments are funny and acted well, but what really drives the film is the music. The approach to the music seems mostly inspired by Johnny Cash. But the filmakers don't stop there. There's Bob Dylan, disco, and even rap. The songs are really good, moving the story along while often being quite humorous. To me, the most humorous has to be "Let's Duet." They're all top notch and John C. Reily gives his all. While Daniel Day Lewis picked up an oscar for his work in 2007, maybe someone should give Reily an award for his hard work in this film. I've loved seeing Reily in many of his supporting roles and admired his work. He shines here. This 2 disc DVD, like prevoius Apatow productions, is chock full of goodies. The main draw to fans of the film will be the inclusion of 16 (count 'em) full performances of music from the movie. There's the obligatory commentary and a very interesting documentary on the music production. There's a lot of hard work that went into this film and I hope it gets a bit more notice on video. |

Dewey Cox:The Story On "His" Story....Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story (2 Disc Unrated Widescreen Edition) (8.0/10) Because of my limited income, it's rare these days for me to buy a new release over $15, but for some reason spending it on a blind-buy of this flix seemed right at time. I mean, I'm a huge fan of musical biopics as well as it's parodies of them like with the classic This Is Spinal Tap...how could this go wrong? Well, in ways it did & in ways it didn't. John C. Reilly (mostly of Boogie Nights & Talladega Nights fame) stars as Dewey Cox, a country/rock singer who starts in the 50's and metamorphoses with each changing decade. In his travels, he runs into many classic performers of this time, most notably Elvis, The Beatles, even Buddy Holly. Even makes you think Johnny Cash shoulda been around, but he's not and with good reason. This movie basically parodies him. Think Walk The Line meets Airplane....just not nearly as good in either department. So why the decent rating? Because this film hits levels of such eye-rolling, flat humor it actually as a whole turns out funny. Just don't expect to laugh out loud on either version (the R version is 96 minutes long and the Unrated is a whopping 120), because this movie's humor is so low-key, that it seems it's supposed to be a joke for only the people who made it rather than it's audience. But when you hear a barrage of lame jokes in a row like this film provides, it makes you laugh due to the consistency of all the attempts. It's strange, but true. Surprisingly, this film wrangled in alot of actors, from current musicals stars to about every comedic actor who's worked on television in the past five years. There's very few faces you won't recognize in this one. Well shot & audio great, it definitely looks/sound of the quality of say Ray or A Mighty Wind, but unlike Wind, the jokes are more in your face and twice as less clever. While crude humor fans might flock to this, they might find the jokes too weak or plain just not funny. But combined with the songs they might be more forgiving, because it's the music, be it not that great either on it's own, that saves this film from a complete crash. Reilly sings and plays guitar on every song, no vocal replacement singer here, and if you found songs from Spinal Tap like "Tonight I'm Gonna Rock You Tonight" clever and amusing, Dewey's tracks like "(Mama) You Got To Love Your.....Man" equally entertaining. It's the music that carries the film into wanting you to see more, helping narrate as it goes from decade to decade. Sure, it's almost as corny as the script itself, but with Reilly's great vocal delivery (almost like Cash himself), it gives the movie that little extra clout. If DVD extras though are a plus to you, this version of the disc/movie has them in spades. Deleted scenes, full musical performances, commentaries, documentaries, biographies, as well as two complete versions of the movie itself, this one definitely earns it's price in that department. But don't get me wrong, overall this movie is still stupid. It's just stupid. The jokes are painfully lame, the acting is completely over-the-top, and the impersonations are just terrible, but put all together by Reilly and Superbad/40 Year Old Virgin writer/ producer Judd Apatow, it just seems to work, and at times work well. Almost like seeing a movie that could be described as "it's so bad, it's good!". A must for any fan of musical bio-pics (especially the ones that aired originally as TV Movies), this should be seen at least once and in it's quote "Unbearably Long Self- Indulgent 120 Minute Director's Cut", which actually makes the film more bearable. But be warned, you might want to turn it off ten minutes into the film when a wigged 43 year old Reilly yells into the camera "But Mama, I'm only fourteen!", but expecting that set-up further, you too might be saying the long-running joke of the film, "I Love Cox!". Yeah, expect ALOT of that. |

Great Music and funnyThis review is from: Walk Hard - The Dewey Cox Story (Widescreen Edition) (DVD) I rate this movie highly as it is funny and satirical and the original music is well done. This movie has a glaring fault though... a hotel room scene with male nudity that obviously was put in to shock, but is just tasteless and unfortunately limits who I could recommend this movie to.Make a version available without that scene and associated clip in the credits so families can laugh and enjoy this well done parody. Just my suggestion. |
